CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day, the opening meeting of the 2021 Flat season at Ascot. It is fantastic to have owners back on track for the first time since December and we are delighted to be able to offer them outdoor hospitality in line with the current Government guidelines. Last year this meeting was lost to the pandemic but the key races on the card were saved as part of the resumption of racing programme, which was so nimbly led by the British Horseracing Authority. The 2020 Sagaro Stakes was rerouted to Newcastle and it proved an informative contest despite the close proximity to the Royal Meeting with the winner, Nayef Road, finishing second to Stradivarius in the Gold Cup two weeks later. This year we are delighted to see Stradivarius, now a three-time Gold Cup winner, in the field for a high-quality renewal of the Group 3 Longines Sagaro Stakes, the feature race on the card today. If all goes to plan he will return in June attempting to emulate the great Yeats and win a fourth Gold Cup. This would also be his fifth successive victory at the Royal Meeting as the winning streak began with the Queen’s Vase in 2017. Our thanks go to Longines for their sponsorship of the Sagaro Stakes today and their ongoing support to the racecourse as an Official Partner. Their sectional timing system is in action today as we begin our new season. The opening race today is the Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap, being run this year to promote the work of industry group Women in Racing. Classic-winning jockey Manny Mercer sadly lost his life at Ascot on 26th September 1959 and whilst we would normally be welcoming his family, we remember Manny with them from afar. Once again, the winner of the Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes will receive a free entry into any two-year-old race at Royal Ascot and on that theme, we thank Naas Racecourse in Ireland today for staging their Royal Ascot Trials meeting on 16th May, and race three is named to promote that fixture. Last week, QIPCO British Champions Series launched the first ever Hall of Fame for British Flat racing and we are marking this important initiative with a dedicated race today. The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame will celebrate the equine and human champions of British Flat racing since 1970. You can read more about the venture in these pages. This year’s Paradise Stakes is being run under the name of the Charlie Waller Trust, a Thatchambased charity whose overarching mission is to educate young people, and those with responsibility for them, about their mental health and wellbeing. Our concluding sprint handicap promotes Racing Welfare’s charity cycle race and we wish the best of luck to those undertaking the challenge of riding from Carlisle to Newton Abbot in August. 1st Race 1.00pm The Women In Racing Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 20-21

2nd Race 1.35pm The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial Conditions Stakes (GBB Race)

This race is a five furlong conditions stakes for two-year-olds. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, fillies receive a 5lb allowance from their male counterparts with penalties allocated on the basis of number of races won, 3lb for a single win or 6lb for two victories. 3rd Race 2.10pm The Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race) Like the previous race, this is another conditions stakes altough this particular contest is restricted to three-year-old ﬁllies, which are E.B.F. eligible, and which have not won a Pattern race. It is to be run over a distance of one mile. PAGES 34-35

4th Race 2.45pm The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)

This two mile race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. 4

Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 victory or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1. PAGES 40-42

5th Race 3.20pm The QIPCO British Champions Series horseracinghof.com Pavilion Stakes (Class 1) (A Commonwealth Cup Trial) (Group 3) Like the previous race, this is another high-quality Group 3 affair and we may even see some Royal Ascot contenders lining up. This particular six furlong contest is restricted to three-year-olds with ﬁllies receiving 3lb from their male rivals. Any horse that has won a Group 1 or 2 race after August 31st last year will incur a 4lb penalty. PAGES 48-50

6th Race 3.55pm The Charlie Waller Trust Paradise Stakes (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial) (Listed Race)

This one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for colts and geldings and 8st 9lb for ﬁllies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success or 7lb for a Group 2 win. 7th Race 4.30pm The Great Racing Welfare Cycle HandicapStakes

This is a ﬁve furliong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are preﬁxed by the letter h. 23. A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The ﬁrst permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost ﬁfty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who ﬁrst saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The ﬁrst race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that ﬁrst Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the ﬁrst four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magniﬁcent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate this year.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN’S ESTIMATE WAS THE WINNER OF THE 2013 SAGARO STAKES EN ROUTE TO HER FAMOUS SUCCESS IN THE GOLD CUP

The opening meeting of Ascot’s Flat season may only have been christened Royal Ascot Trials Day in 2019 but the fixture has a rich history of producing key early season contests with relevance to the Royal Meeting in June. The Longines Sagaro Stakes is the feature race on the card, a Group 3 event that is a designated Gold Cup Trial. Colour Vision and Estimate landed the spoils in 2012 and 2013 respectively before going on to Gold Cup glory while Mizzou, Torcedor, Dee Ex Bee and Nayef Road all placed in the Royal Meeting’s flagship race having won the Longines Sagaro Stakes. The Commonwealth Cup is Royal Ascot’s newest Group 1 contest, created in 2015 as a top-level race for three-year-old sprinters over six furlongs. At the same time, the Pavilion Stakes was identified as an ideal stepping-stone to that race and so was upgraded to Group 3 that season and is now run as the Merriebelle Stable Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes, recognising it’s importance on the road to Royal Ascot.

It has been won by the likes of Limato, Blue Point and Calyx since 2015 while Harry Angel and Eqtidaar both finished second before going on to Group 1 success in their careers. It might have been hard to envisage Accidental Agent troubling the judge in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot after he finished third in the Listed Paradise Stakes in 2018 but that’s exactly what he did when he returned six weeks later to win the Queen Anne Stakes under Charlie Bishop. Run as a designated Queen Anne Stakes Trial, this well-located race over the straight mile can attract high-quality contenders while also being a nice opportunity for handicappers moving up to a higher level. The winner and the placed horses are often worth following throughout the season, as Accidental Agent showed. There could be more clues in the Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial Conditions Stakes which normally attracts some talented juveniles, including recently the 2019 Norfolk Stakes runner up Ventura Rebel who won the race that year. The Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Filles’ Conditions Stakes has also featured future Royal Ascot runners in recent years, most notably the 2018 Sandringham Stakes winner Agrotera. To nearly all breeders, owners and trainers, Royal Ascot is the apex of the Flat racing season, no matter how big or small an operation is. Last June there were eleven British-bred winners that were led into the hallowed winners’ enclosure and amongst them was Nando Parrado, who was victorious in the Coventry Stakes, at 150/1. Bred by Anita Wigan, who owns ten mares, and for whom this was a first Royal Ascot success, his victory meant a great deal, saying: “It is what we all do it for, to be on the big stage. It is so hard to breed something that wins, let alone on the big stage. It doesn’t matter that he was the longest-priced winner at Royal Ascot.” Former owner of Rushbrooke Stud, Anita now keeps her mares between James Read’s Selwood Bloodstock in Somerset, the Player family’s Whatton Manor Stud, where Nando Parrado was foaled and raised, in Nottinghamshire, and at Brian O’Rourke’s Copgrove Stud in Yorkshire. The purchase of Nando Parrado’s dam Chibola, a Group 3 scorer at Palermo, was unorthodox, being sourced via photographs sent from an agent in Argentina. Anita says: “We were on holiday in Argentina and went racing in Buenos Aires. They were racing on really very firm ground and I thought if a horse can remain sound on the ground, I want one. Unfortunately she died last week following complications after foaling a colt by Magna Grecia, but she was a really remarkable mare. She never missed when covered and produced a decent horse each year – Muntadab is still running at the age of nine, and her soundness was one of the reasons for buying her. 16

“Having got her she was covered by Oasis Dream and she produced Paella, who was very fast and Richard Hannon thought she would be a Queen Mary filly, but unfortunately she had a setback and was unable to make the track. She then visited Invincible Spirit and produced Muntadab, who was a beautiful horse, Kodiac (sire of Nando Parrado) at the time was good, a half-brother to Invincible Spirit, who had gone to over €100,000, and was a more reasonable option.” While Chibola may no longer be around, her newly born colt has taken well to his adopted mother. Anita still has plenty to look forward to. A two-year-old filly by first-season sire Aclaim has been retained after failing to sell last autumn, been named Orzo and sent into training with Andrew Balding. Anita says: “She is a bit bigger than Nando, that will be the Acclamation rather than the Invincible Spirit line coming through, but they really like her.” Nando Parrado is not the first in the family to have run at Royal Ascot. The aforementioned Muntadab ran as a five-year-old, while another half-brother Dubai Horizon ran as a six-year-old last year. Getchagetchagetcha, twice raced at Royal Ascot, was bred by Anita out of Paella. Each year the executives at Ascot reward breeders of the Royal Ascot winners with a luncheon, which is very well received, as Anita says: “I was so thrilled with all the presents from Ascot, I received a framed winners photo, a silver bowl with his name on it, Champagne, the gifts kept coming – it was really appreciated. Breeders are the forgotten people, we are the producers and it is great that there is appreciation.” It was not just Nando Parrado that flew the flag in 2020 for the Dorset-based breeder, who is also a Trustee of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA). Angel Power improved from Chelmsford novice winner to ending the season with victory in the Group 3 Pride Stakes at Newmarket and a rout of the opposition in Group 2 company in Italy. “Looking back to last year, from a breeding perspective, it was the pinnacle,” said Anita. “To have two Group winners, from two mares that I chose myself and from matings that I chose, it was absolutely unbelievable. Angel stays in training and is heading to all those Group 1s. The inaugural ‘Royal Ascot Trials Day’ in 2019 was dominated by British breeders, with six of the seven winners carrying the (GB) suffix that indicates they were born on these shores. In a positive development for Ascot’s Flat season curtain raiser, the opening two contests on that day in 2019 - the five-furlong sprint for two-year-olds won by Crossfields Bloodstock homebred Ventura Rebel, and the fillies’ conditions stakes won by the Highclere Stud-bred Muchly - have this year been allocated Great British Bonus (GBB) race status. The game changing bonus prize money scheme was launched by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association in June 2020. GBB offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares, with the overall aim of increasing prize money in British racing and boosting the number of British-bred horses in racing, thereby safeguard the future of British breeding. Today, owners of GBB registered fillies in the two-year-old sprint (race 2) could win up to £10,000 in bonus prize money, while those in the fillies’ contest (race 3) will be racing for as much as £20,000. GBB recently hit the headlines for already having awarded over £2 million in prize money, despite still being in its infancy. At the time of writing, 115 horses have taken home 140 prizes to their connections. Winners range from smaller owner/breeder operations such as Pat Toye, who hand-reared her £20,000 GBB filly Sorbet, to large professional syndicates. 18

As the scheme grows, it continues to have a major impact on every level of the racing and breeding industry, with prize money distributed between owners, breeders, jockeys, trainers and stable staff. “GBB just isn’t a one-time windfall; fillies can win cumulative bonuses and they do,” GBB Operations Executive Charlotte Newton explains. “We have had a Flat filly, Blackberry, who has won three times, securing £60,000 in payments. To hit the £2 million mark in less than a year is fantastic news for everyone involved in racing and breeding. The feedback from owners, trainers and breeders when they win makes you appreciate just how important the scheme is. It’s influencing decisions on whether people continue to race horses as well as if – and how – they’re going to breed them, and emphasises the buy and race British message.” Tequila Blaze, trained by multiple-GBB prizewinning National Hunt trainer Fergal O’Brien, was the filly that pushed the scheme over the £2 million milestone in mid-April. “It’s a huge amount of money. It is a fantastic scheme. It certainly makes us look when we go to the sales. If they’ve got the sticker on their bums as they’re going round the sales ring, it does make a huge difference. You’ll definitely be more attracted to one that’s a GBB mare than one that isn’t”. Fellow National Hunt trainer Dan Skelton is also full of praise for the prize money scheme. “The GBB is a great scheme and a big help to breeders and sellers of fillies, particularly in the current climate,” he said. “The support of British breeding is paramount and the GBB scheme is a fantastic incentive for both breeders and owners. www.roa.co.uk Nick Bradley is proof that you can turn your passion into your profession, from his early involvement with Middleham Park Racing to purchasing Junior at the sales at a bargain price before he went on to win at Royal Ascot. So, how did Nick go from being a teacher to one of the leading owners in the country, we find out. How did your involvement with horse racing start and which was the first horse you owned? I was fascinated by the Grand National and used to study the race each year. I remember backing Hallo Dandy in the 1984 Grand National when I was six-years-old, so I was interested in horse racing from an early age. I had a share in a horse called Pride in the Park around twenty years ago who won twice at Southwell and I was hooked from there. What was your first Royal Ascot runner? I bought a horse called Junior at the May Sales in 2010 for £35,000 with the aim of running him on the Flat and under NH rules. Around five weeks later we ran him in the Ascot Stakes on the opening day of the 2010 Royal Meeting. Seb Sanders rode him and he led from the stalls and made all over the two miles and four furlong trip to win by six lengths. Since then we have had around twenty runners at the meeting and won three times so we have a pretty good record at the meeting. What is your favourite Ascot memory to date? Raising Sand has given us some great days at Ascot having won four times at the track. Dandalla was very enjoyable last year when winning the Albany Stakes but to be there when Commissioned won the Queen Alexandra Stakes on the final day of the meeting in 2016 was very special. We were very confident of winning, Adam Kirby gave him a great ride and Ascot had arranged for NFL superstar Wes Welker to present the trophy.

The race you would most like to win in the UK? We have over thirty two-year-old fillies in training in 2021 and plan to focus on the fillies’ races going forward. The Albany at the Royal Meeting was a target which we achieved with Dandalla in 2020, but the Fillies Mile and 1000 Guineas at Newmarket are Group 1s we aim to have runners in year on year going forward. Which of your horses are you hoping will run at Ascot this year? Fev Rover, Dandalla and Raising Sand all have Royal Ascot targets this year, but I hope to add another three or four two-year-olds to that list by the time the meeting comes around. Hopefully a few will start putting their hands up to go for either the Queen Mary or Albany in the next six weeks. Syndicates are now very popular - what is the one piece of advice you give perspective members? The most important piece of advice I would give anyone is to take things slowly. I see many outright owners come into the game and leave shortly afterwards having had an unsatisfactory experience. Do your research, follow the sales, ignore win percentages and instead look at who is doing well with the horses they are buying. A ‘Nick Bradley’ horse to look out for this year? We have some very good three-year-olds on the track this year but I bought a record number of yearlings at the sales last autumn so I will select a two-year-old filly. The Time Test progeny were extremely good-looking at the sales and the nicest I saw was a filly we bought for 45,000 guineas. We named her ‘Simply Gorgeous’ and Richard Fahey who trains her likes what he has seen to date. One horse you would love to own? We have fifty broodmares at home so I am going to have to select a colt who I would send plenty of the mares to in years to come. Minzaal’s turn of pace in the Gimcrack last year was exceptional and is a horse that I am looking forward to seeing on the racetrack in 2021. He is a son of Mehmas who looks like being a phenomenal sire in the years to come. You are a well-known face at the bloodstock sales, do you have a physical attribute that you look out for in any potential purchases? I am a big believer in watching a horse walk away from me. I like to see a horse who has a good action in its hind quarters to help drive it forward when galloping. The most important factor is the horse’s action - it has to be athletic and propel the horse. Is there a first-season sire’s offspring you are keen to acquire, or do you prefer to follow the path of proven breeding? I am a big believer that all stallion’s produce progeny at both ends of the spectrum and the stallion is just a small part of the puzzle. We had Dandalla, Fev Rover, Mystery Angel and Furlong Factor in 2020 - each filly was the highest-rated daughter of their respective stallion’s two-year-old crop (Dandy Man, Gutaifan, Kodi Bear and Adaay). On each occasion we selected the fillies at the sales based on their physical attributes. That said, I do think the 2021 crop of first season sires is the most competitive group of stallions we have had in many years.

ASCOT MEETS..... Josh Apiafi Josh Apiafi is a regular face on our screens, bringing racing to our living rooms with his positivity, drive and enthusiasm. Passionate about all things racing, Josh not only is the face of racing but also spends a great deal of his time improving opportunities for others. Here we chat to Josh and find out a little more about how he got into racing, what events he is ticking off his bucket list and his surprising break into racing TV over lunch in Korea. What is your first racing memory? Having ridden at pony club from an early age, all I ever wanted to do was go flat out. I first discovered racing on my 11th birthday when I was taken as a surprise by my dad’s friend who was an amateur jockey who took me to Ludlow races. As I walked in my eyes popped out on stalks and from that moment, there was nothing else I wanted to do in life than ride at speed over fences! Going through school did you always want to work in the racing industry, or did you have another career dream? I was too fat to be a jockey and too short to be a basketball player! But actually, gave both a good try! I played England U16 basketball and at the same age left school, moved 200 miles away from home and became an amateur jockey and pupil assistant to champion trainer Martin Pipe. How did you get into TV presenting? In a very roundabout way! I had no formal training but in 2007 I got scouted by Andrew Franklin, the Head of Channel 4 Racing, to cover the Flat season as a guest presenter. I was awful! Since then, I’ve had plenty of media training and mentoring from the likes of Dermot Cumiskey, Alex Steedman and Alex Hammond. You cannot beat getting advice from top class individuals and its something I advise to all the new faces coming through. The approach to work for Sky Sports Racing came in the most random of places; over lunch in Seoul, Korea at the Asian Racing Conference in 2018. Rob Dakin, Head of Racing at Sky Sports Racing, asked if I would consider a presenting role on the new channel and offered the training and support, I felt I needed to accept his proposal. I haven’t looked back; they are a fantastic team of people to work with. 2 8 A SCOT M E E T S . . . . .

What was the best piece of careers advice you received and from whom? ‘Screw it lets do it’ stolen from Richard Branson but the answer given to me by my dad when I asked his advice about moving to London to work for a new .com start up – this turned out to be Betfair! Does your family share your passion for racing? Growing up, no not at all! We were a totally unhorsey family. However, they supported me wholeheartedly in a completely alien world to them – I will never forget when I had my first ride, my mum tried to back me ‘every way’ with the bookies rather than each way!! My wife and kids are huge fans, we live in Lambourn so eat, sleep and breathe racing. I met my wife Abby when I was sponsoring at Uttoxeter Racecourse and she was working there for Northern Racing as Rod Street’s Head of Sales and Marketing! So she’s worked in racing almost as long as I have. Do you remember your first visit to Ascot? My first visit to Ascot was in the 90s when the early iterations of the Shergar Cup got transferred from Goodwood to Ascot. I had started my first business, Racing Link (promoting anything racing related to racegoers) and had a trade stand at the meeting. Experiencing the Shergar Cup, with its bands after racing, scoreboards and the new teams format giving a narrative for the afternoon, opened my eyes to the possibility of a whole new audience for racing if we were able to diversify a little. What has been the most surreal sporting moment in your career so far? (not necessarily racing related) I have a bucket list of sporting events around the world I want to attend and I am lucky enough to be gradually ticking them off. I try and learn something from every single one of them which I can localise and bring bring back to our sport of racing. For customer service and attention to detail it has to be the sport of golf and The Masters at Augusta. I took my dad there a few years ago, it was just incredible, not just from a sporting point of view but from the spectator’s experience as well. Literally no stone was left unturned, they had thought of everything. For pure adrenaline and all round razzmatazz it has to be the Super Bowl! Warren Greatrex and I (with a couple of other mates who were also born in 1975) went to the Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix Arizona for our 40th birthdays. Hearing the commentators explaining the plays without annoying the purists – it was a balance that they had exactly right. A SCOT M E E T S . . . . . 2 9

ASCOT MEETS..... Josh Apiafi (continued) Your favourite racing memory at Ascot? Taking my kids to Royal Ascot for the first time – the whole experience of hiring top hat and tails for my son Finn and getting my daughter Isla’s dress and hat, getting our positions paddock-side to see the Queen come past, almost close enough to touch! Singing by the Bandstand and of course the most phenomenal racing. It was an incredible day, particularly seeing their faces sponging up the whole experience. Sometimes we can fall into the trap of taking the experience of racing for granted, its days like this one that remind us how spectacular our sport really is. The advice you would give a student who wants to follow in your shoes. As a man who left school at 16 ‘follow your passion not the pay cheque’ Career highlight? I have been incredibly lucky that my career in racing has covered being a jockey, the head of the Professional Jockeys Association, a business owner, a director at Betfair, a presenter on Sky Sports Racing and a racehorse owner. My career highlight has to be winning the Midlands Grand National with our horse Big Occasion. He was trained by my old friend and our best man David Pipe who picked us up that morning in his helicopter, we had the kids there with us too. Uttoxeter holds such a special place in my heart, I had my last winner there for Martin Pipe, as I mentioned before I met my wife Abs there and then to win the Midlands Grand National was just an exceptional day at our favourite course! One person from the worldwide racing industry you would like to interview and why? Rachael Blackmore – firstly to thank her, she has done wonders for racing’s reputation. I’ve no doubt the hurdles she has jumped to get to where she has will have been enormous and difficult, no matter what that smile tells you. Secondly, to talk to her about her thoughts and ideas now she is such a fantastic role model to the future generations of kids coming into the sport. Why should people look to work within the racing industry? There is a vast variety of roles available in our sport, but they are rarely promoted enough. We currently only really engage with those kids who can ride or are the short kids in class! In reality there are hundreds of opportunities out there, from driving tractors and horseboxes to senior managerial roles, from working at a racecourse, to working in the media or bloodstock side of things. You can even work in the sport and have a job where you don’t ever see a horse! It’s a sport that offers excitement and adrenaline on a global scale.

What is a typical working day like for you? As a man with several employment hats, no two days are the same! I try to start my day riding first lot at Oliver Sherwood’s. It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to switch my phone off and focus on my passion, riding racehorses. That hour on the Lambourn gallops sets me up for the day - even when its pouring with rain! I’m the founder of Rewards4Racing.com, the sports rewards and loyalty programme. We employ around 40 staff at our offices in Burton on Trent and have over a million members to look after. Due to the pandemic and like a lot of people, my days are spent mostly on Zoom calls these days! I average a day a week presenting on Sky Sports Racing, sometimes from home where the office turns into a studio, sometimes from the studio near Heathrow and I’ve been really lucky to be able to present from places like Ascot when we’ve been racing behind closed doors. From the start of 2019, I have been working more and more on promoting diversity, inclusion and wellness in our sport. Something I am hugely passionate about and am really proud to be getting behind and pushing forward various initiatives to protect the future of racing. If you could only pick one race at Ascot to present on Sky racing, which race would you pick and why? The QIPCO Champion Stakes – since the emergence of British Champions Day at Ascot, the Ascot team (as well as Rod Street and GBR with sponsors QIPCO) have done a phenomenal job on giving the Flat season the finale it deserves. I am sure it will soon become, if not already a bucket list event! Flat or jumps racing? Jumps! I’ve always been a fan of jumps and have ridden in the UK, America and France. My dream for the future would be to have some form of global jumps series with bonuses attached.

Her Majesty The Queen has held a lifelong passion for horses, both on and off the track. A regular visitor to Royal Ascot and the owner and breeder of many successful horses both on the Flat and over jumps, Her Majesty also ensures that her horses are given the opportunity to succeed in a second career if deemed suitable. Leading showing producer Katie Jerram is currently in the early stages of retraining one of Her Majesty’s homebreds, First Receiver. The four-year-old gelding by New Approach was last seen on the racetrack at Royal Ascot last year when he came second in the Hampton Court Stakes, trained by Sir Michael Stoute. First Receiver’s dam, Touchline, appeared at Royal Ascot in 2015 when coming third in the Sandringham Stakes. “First Receiver arrived with us this February, he is a very kind and willing horse and both the Queen and her team at Sandringham are following his progress closely.” Her Majesty has entrusted Katie to retrain several of her horses, including Barbers Shop who had great success and is now enjoying his retirement at the Jerram yard. First Receiver has taken to his new routine and will initially be shown inhand to gain competitive experience before being shown under saddle. “First Receiver will be aimed at the specialised RoR showing classes as well as novice riding horse classes, he is a superb pattern of a horse and easily fell into his new working outline.” 36 WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Katie is no stranger to racing having trained point-to-pointers and held a trainer’s permit before producing show horses. “Thoroughbreds are my favourite breed. I love their brain, intelligence and outlook on life. I also love their beauty and their understanding of people.” Retraining ex-racehorses is something Katie says brings her great satisfaction and is a lovely achievement. “Whether they have succeeded on the racetrack or not I love to see these beautiful horses in their next career. For the trainers, owners, breeders and public I think it is important to see that they can have a competitive career after racing.” For those that are considering following the RoR route Katie says: “Make sure you understand your horse and the correct retraining approach for them, seek help and advice, have lessons and most of all make sure they are the right horse for you and your capabilities. I would always recommend a thoroughbred.” First Receiver is relishing his new career, with a love of carrots and time in the paddock, and we hope he brings Her Majesty many memorable moments in the future.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS SPOTLIGHT ON CHARLIE WALLER TRUST

Today we recognise Charlie Waller Trust, a charity based in Thatcham, Berkshire that in 2019 “Ascot Racecourse Supports” provided funding to help them expand their mental health training sessions to primary schools within the Berkshire area. The Trust was set up by Sir Mark and Lady Waller in 1997 after their son Charlie tragically took his own life at 28 whilst suffering from depression. The Trust provides training and resources to help people – especially the young – learn how to look after their mental health. Their expert trainers work with teachers, parents, employers, college and university staff, GPs and nurses, giving them the confidence to spot when someone might be struggling and help them get support. Responding quickly to the pandemic The Trust’s work has been more important than ever during the pandemic. Within a week of the first lockdown the Trust launched its Working from Home Wellbeing Action Plan – a free downloadable guide to help people look after their mental health and feel less isolated whilst working remotely. The Trust’s trainers quickly adapted to provide mental health training via Zoom and throughout 2020, delivered hundreds of sessions to thousands of teachers, parents, employers and health professionals, including 55 sessions focused on Berkshire. Topics included stress, healthy coping skills and self-harm. Supporting parents This has been a particularly tough time for many parents and carers. For those feeling alone and dealing with children’s anxieties, the Trust produced new online guidance, ‘Talking to children about feelings’, and through its Mental Health Book Club, sent 518 free copies of Dawn Huebner’s ‘Something bad happened: a kid’s guide to coping with events in the news’ to teachers and others supporting children, including 22 in Berkshire. In addition, 222 people attended special webinars for parents and carers, including one on autism and anxiety from Berkshire-based autism expert Jo Billington. 4 6 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S

The Trust relocated its annual summer Wellbeing Challenge from schools into homes, with a free activity pack to help children stay positive. Parents across the UK, including in Berkshire, found the Challenge useful. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Oisin Murphy Your favourite Ascot memory so far? My favourite Ascot memory was watching Frankel win the QIPCO Champion Stakes. It was his last race and the build-up was amazing. Which horse are you most looking forward to riding this season that is being aimed at Royal Ascot? Tactical. He won last year at Royal Ascot and all being well will be aimed at the Jersey Stakes. It would be very fitting to win for H.M. The Queen - it is always an honour to wear her colours. If you could ride one horse from the past in a historic race at Royal Ascot, which horse would you choose and why? Estimate in the Gold Cup. It was a very special day when Ryan Moore won on her and the joy it brought the Queen was very special. One international horse you would like to see run at Royal Ascot and get the ride on? Contrail from Japan in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes - he is a very versatile horse. The winner is usually one of the best horses in the world and he is in the top three in Japan currently. Mr Maeda, his owner, has always been a big supporter of mine. Which race would you most like to win at Royal Ascot? This is a very difficult question - it is very important to get a Group 1 winner on the board. If you weren’t a jockey what other job would you like to do? I enjoy showjumping so I think that might have been an option. My family are involved with farming and accountancy so I could have also followed those paths. You book a box at Royal Ascot and can invite five famous people not necessarily from racing – who would you invite? (Oisin could not just pick 5!) Johnny Depp, Tiger Woods, Anthony Joshua, Manny Pacquiao, James Blunt, Marcos Alonso, Alvaro Borja Morata Martin, Shane Lowry, Ronan O’Gara A young jockey to look out for.
