The Ultimate Team Event I am delighted to welcome you to Ascot for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. This renewal of what has become one of the most excing days in the global racing calendar will see a talented line-up of world class jockeys in a points-based compeon by four three-rider teams back at Ascot aer last year’s cancellaon due to Covid-19 pandemic. This year, there will be a different line up of teams due to the complexies of internaonal travel and they are: Great Britain, Ireland, Rest of the World and The Ladies team. Over the years, this ulmate team event has maintained its posion as Ascot’s best aended fixture outside of the Royal meeng. The compeve spirit in which the event is played out embodies what Brish racing’s only team event is all about, and it is clear that they are up for the challenge it represents. Despite the challenges of the past year, Dubai Duty Free has connued to operate its retail business at Dubai Internaonal Airport and in June last year introduced a Home Delivery service for UAE residents, which has proven popular. In December 2020 we marked our 37th anniversary and recorded annual sales of US$697 million. I am very proud of the great efforts made by our team of staff and managers in the past year and I am very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviaon Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, for his ongoing support of our operaon. Dubai Duty Free connued to invest in sports sponsorship over the past year and, despite most events being held behind closed doors, we were glad to support our partners and to connue to promote our brand and the city of Dubai. In addion to our sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, we are looking forward to the Dubai Duty Free Internaonal Raceday taking place at the historic Newbury Racecourse from 17th – 18th September, which marks the season finale of our horseracing sponsorship this year. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish the connecons and riders of all the horses taking part today every success and thank you for choosing to come to Ascot and share in this unique racing occasion. I wish you all a pleasant day of racing and stay safe. COLM McLOUGHLIN Execuve Vice Chairman & CEO Dubai Duty Free

4th Race 2.35pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile (Handicap)
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100. PAGES 42-44
2nd Race 1.25pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers (Handicap)
This is a two miles handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 100 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95. PAGES 48-50
3rd Race 2.00pm The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge (Handicap)
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. HOW THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP WORKS
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition where four teams: Great Britain & Ireland, The Girls, Europe and the Rest of the World battle it out to win the coveted Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The six handicaps offer free entry and are limited to 10 runners, with either two or three horses racing for each team. Subject to full fields, each jockey has five rides across the afternoon. This is to ensure that in the event of an injury, there is a spare jockey on each team who can assume mounts. Points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve (two for each race) 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams. The team with the highest total after race six lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup while the jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the Alistair Haggis “Silver Saddle” trophy.
One jockey will receive the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award. If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places and then if necessary fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners. Ascot Racecourse will also distribute almost £7,000 in awards for stable staff throughout the day. Each race there will be a £200 prize for the best turned out and £200 to the staff member responsible for the winning horse, with £100 to staff members responsible for 2nd to 5th placed horses. There will also be a £2,000 bonus prize paid to the most successful stable based on total Shergar Cup points. This is the 20th edition Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot. The event was first staged at Ascot in 2000.

“I feel great pride in looking after ‘my’ horses and enjoy every minute.” Racing Grooms are vital to our industry. Here you can find out what our Careers in Racing Content Creator, JoJo does on a daily basis. She works at Jonjo O’Neill Racing. My day starts very early, 4:40am my alarm goes off. I normal hit the snooze at least once or twice but I need to be up by 5:00am! Before work, I go and care for my own ex-racehorse and I try to be at work for 5:45am. I work away from the main yard, down the “pens”, which is where horses are trained from the field. I look after nine horses there so my first duty is to give them all their breakfast. I also check their legs for any signs of injury or heat, check they’re not too hot and watch for lameness and other ailments. I then muck them out and usually try to be there when the riders come, to answer questions or tell them anything they need to know. My first lot is when everyone’s else second lot so I’m gathering my rubbers and girth sleeves in preparation whilst everyone is coming back in. I might empty the washing machines and hang the contents up to dry if I have time. I tend to ride out three to four lots before lunch, by which time I’m starving. Afternoon stables doesn’t officially start until 3:30pm but I usually start early as I’m busy down the pens. I have to fill up the feed bin and feed the field horses too. I don’t brush the horses much as they’re happy covered in mud and time doesn’t allow me to but I pick out their hooves, again checking all is OK and cream any sore heels. I make sure to refresh their water and the final task I do is feed them all. Any day is subject to change due to racing or any other driving jobs, especially vet runs or maybe some emergencies. I feel great pride in looking after ‘my’ horses and enjoy every minute. You can read more careers stories on the Case Studies pages on the Careers in Racing site. THE GREAT RACING WELFARE CYCLE
Today we are raising awareness for The Great Racing Welfare Cycle which is taking place in two weeks’ time and which will see 27 cyclists embark on an inspiring challenge - cycling the length of the country over five days, all in aid of Racing Welfare. The ride will start at Carlisle Racecourse on 17th August and finish at Newton Abbot Racecourse on 21st August, covering around 100 miles a day. Both the start and end of the ride coincide with race days so participants will get a roaring send-off and warm welcome at either end of the event. The event is being supported by “pie”, who are experts in long distance cycling events and will be on hand 24/7 to support the riders in completing their challenge. The demand for Racing Welfare’s services LAUREN BRAITHWAITE continues to rise. In 2020 more than 4,533 people received support from the charity through more than 10,000 individual support sessions. In order to provide these vital services which have never been more needed, Racing Welfare needs to raise more than £2.2 million each year. Racing Welfare are only able to operate through the generosity and support of those who, like them, care about the people who work to make our day at the races possible. All the funds raised will help Racing Welfare meet the growing demand for support for racing’s workforce, whose dedication and commitment makes the sport possible. You can support the riders by texting CYCLE followed by the donation amount* to 70560. Texts cost donation amount plus one standard rate message *Max donation per text is £20

SEAN LEVEY Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup debut. Born in Swaziland and relocated to Ireland with his family in 2001. Spent six years as an apprentice with trainer Aidan O’Brien. At 66/1, she remains the longest-priced winner in the Classic’s history. Further big race wins have followed on King Of Change in the 2019 G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and Snow Lantern in last month’s G1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
ANDREA ATZENI Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup debut. Grew up on the Italian region of Sardinia, the same island where Frankie Dettori hails from. Formerly stable jockey to Roger Varian, for whom he won the 2014 G1 St Leger on Kingston Hill, and Qatar Racing, for whom he captured the same Classic in 2015 with Simple Verse. Now retained rider for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum; rode the owner’s Postponed to win the 2015 G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes before partnering the same horse to further G1 glory in the following year’s Dubai Sheema Classic, Coronation Cup and Juddmonte International. REMEMBERING SHERGAR Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing disappearance as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his recordbreaking victory in the 1981 Derby and imperious triumph in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot the following month. Infamously kidnapped following his retirement to stud in Ireland, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty Timeform rating of 140. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Vertem Futurity Trophy. Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap (now World Thoroughbred Rankings), Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial which was followed by a 12-length demolition of the field in the Chester Vase.
elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth. That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million (a huge amount then so one can only begin to imagine what his modern day value would have been), the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland, but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2 million ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery, but he is remembered in many ways around the world, including today at Ascot, with the world’s premier jockeys’ competition honouring the greatest racehorse of the 1980s.
Shergar lined up at Epsom as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from inferior rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the race. With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to The Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths before routing his 32 REMEMBERING SHERGAR

THE ALISTAIR HAGGIS SILVER SADDLE BY CLOSE FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE, MIKE VINCE If I came down from the commentary gantry at the end of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and wanted to speak to Alistair, I knew exactly where to look - he’d be watching the Closing Ceremony in the quietest corner he could find, well away from the spotlight. That was Alistair. A man who would, and often did work morning noon and night to make sure a project was successful, and then be positively the last person to step forward and accept the acclaim that was rightly due. Alistair loved racing, loved racing people and loved Ascot Racecourse. He had some of the finest PR skills I have ever come across in anyone I have dealt with in any sport, and his tireless work with his colleagues at the International Racing Bureau with trainers and jockeys is quite simply a cornerstone of why the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has become what it is today. It became tradition for there to be a Production Meeting in the days ahead of the Shergar Cup, in “Studio 6” we used to call it (though in reality a local restaurant), where we would talk through plans for the day. The rest of us would then head home but for Alistair it was straight back to work. I still have some of the 3am emails he sent with answers to any issues. When the QIPCO British Champion Series started it came as no surprise to hear Alistair was on the team as PR Manager. Rod Street, the CEO of that organisation, knew his work was peerless and that he held the respect of the media. Quite simply the hand of Haggis was always the seal of success. Devoted to his beloved Arsenal, Ali thrilled us all when marriage to Nim led to the arrival of son Alfie, on whom he doted. That such happiness should have been followed after such a short time by the cruelty of his illness and

inevitable passing from Motor Neurone Disease in 2014 has been hard for his friends and family to bear. Being able to say you were a friend of Alistair Haggis will always be something to cherish, and I’ll admit before my days work in the commentary box is done this afternoon, my eyes will go skywards. It was an appropriate gesture by Ascot and Dubai Duty Free in 2015 to have the Silver Saddle named in Alistair’s honour, and it is wonderful we can welcome his family to the place he called ‘home’ for so many happy years to present the trophy.

Growing up near Marseille in the South of France, horse riding didn’t play a part in Mickaëlle’s life until she was 10 years old, so her rise to fame has been nothing short of miraculous. Going against her parent’s wishes, Mickaëlle knew which path she wanted to follow, “I always loved horses and had decided I wanted to work in some way with them, but my parents did not agree with me as they didn’t like or ride horses.” “I discovered the local jockey school and decided it was the perfect job for me as it combined sport, competition and horses.” Mickaëlle has grabbed every opportunity that has come her way; not only has she had huge success in her homeland, but she has travelled the world to pursue her passion. She most recently found herself breaking records in Japan, winning 30 races whilst on a short-term license, the highest number of wins ever achieved in this situation. Mickaëlle has thoroughly enjoyed her time in Japan and was set to return before the current worldwide pandemic put paid to that, but Mickaëlle is determined to return. “I love the atmosphere in Japan, there are always really large crowds, and the Japanese people love racing.” As well as the change in language between Japan and France there are also many differences with racing. “Many things are different between Japan and France. First, Japanese races go very fast, lot of rhythm and many races on the dirt. Also, the organisation is different. In Japan, the horses walk in the parade ring 30 minutes before the race, so the jockeys have to prepare 3 8 A SCOT M E E T S
their saddles very early, in France you can do it between races.” The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will be Mickaëlle’s first race riding experience in the UK, but she has prepared. “I have spoken to Christophe Soumillon who has ridden the track many times and he has shared his advice with me. I am very excited; I want to enjoy this very special day.” Mickaëlle has two goals for her day at the Ascot, she wants to enjoy the day and relish the experience. While Mickaelle awaits the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, Mickaëlle is making the most of her rare days off in quarantine. “I have lots of interviews to do and I am going to continue to study the languages I want to improve including my English and Japanese which I will do with my teacher online.” Having won in Italy, Germany, Japan and France, Mickaëlle is passionate that she is simply known as a good jockey not a female jockey. “I admire all women jockeys. It’s a hard job when you work only with men. Every woman works hard to gain respect. We just want to be a jockey, not a female jockey because we do the same job. Every winning female jockey is good publicity for all women jockeys. I am sure my colleagues and I open the doors for the future generations and we can be proud of that.” With the world at her feet, there are two races she would most like to win “I would like to win the Japan Cup because of the atmosphere, but I would also like to win the Arc de Triomphe - a famous race, why not with a Japanese horse to mark history?” With her motto “Work hard and never give up” it is no surprise that there are plenty of dreams yet to fulfil for Mickaëlle, “I would love to ride in the USA but I will consider any opportunities!”
