CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the first day of the September Racing Weekend at Ascot. As we head into the final two months of the 2021 Flat season it is worth reflecting on some of the great racing that we have witnessed at Ascot where there have been many outstanding performances by horses and jockeys. It is particularly interesting to see that the two leading jockeys at Ascot this summer – William Buick with eight winners and Oisin Murphy with seven winners – are both fighting it out again to be Champion Flat Jockey. Murphy was the leading rider at Royal Ascot this year and is bidding for a third straight title while Buick delivered a superb ride on Adayar to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. Murphy will be at Haydock today and Buick at Kempton this evening but we look forward to celebrating whoever prevails on QIPCO British Champions Day in October when the Jockeys Championship title is awarded. Another member of the weighing room enjoying a superb season, Ray Dawson, is the subject of our Ascot Enquiry feature in these pages this weekend. Dawson has hit the headlines this year by riding out his claim and gaining a first Group victory aboard Zain Claudette in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes at Ascot in July before the pair followed up in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York’s Ebor meeting. Today’s card contains seven competitive and interesting contests. The opening two races feature several potentially exciting two-year-olds who should all be worth following in the future. 1st Race 1.20pm The Hoof It For PRD British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

This six furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful. PAGES 22-23

2nd Race 1.55pm The Charbonnel et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes

This race is a seven furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the ﬁrst time of asking. PAGES 28-30

3rd Race 2.30pm The Dash Charity Classiﬁed Stakes

This race is a one mile classiﬁed stakes for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 90. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s rating reﬂects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex. This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rivals. PAGES 32-33

4th Race 3.05pm The Victoria Racing Club Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more CONTENTS

weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. the country. PAGES 38-39

5th Race 3.40pm The National Racehorse Week Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90. PAGES 44-46

6th Race 4.10pm The Bateaux London Handicap Stakes

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualiﬁed for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. 7th Race 4.45pm The War Horse Memorial Handicap Stakes

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are preﬁxed by the letter h. 23. A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The ﬁrst permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost ﬁfty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who ﬁrst saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The ﬁrst race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that ﬁrst Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the ﬁrst four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magniﬁcent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. ASCOT SUPPORTS – WHERE ARE THEY NOW Minella Rebellion repels all-comers to be crowned Supreme Champion at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships The sixth running of the largest event exclusively for retrained racehorses concluded on Sunday. Over the course of four days, over 250 former racehorses competed in classes for showing, dressage and jumping at the Aintree International Equestrian Centre as part of The Jockey Club RoR National Championships. Proceedings got underway on Thursday with the RoR Northern Dressage Championships. By Saturday, showing had taken centre stage culminating in the evening’s gala performance where all roads led to the final at which the title of The Jockey Club Supreme Champion was awarded.

Despite it being only their first season of competitive showing, the combination of Minella Rebellion and Katie Dashwood won over the judges and they were crowned The Jockey Club Supreme Champion 2021. Having qualified by winning the Tattersalls Novice Championship class, the nine-year-old gelding and Katie Dashwood came out on top against more experienced horses in a stellar line-up for the final that included this season’s champions from Hickstead and the Royal Highland Showground, as well as the cream of the crop from the showing classes held on Saturday evening. Purchased for £90,000 at a Tattersalls Ireland sale at Cheltenham in May 2016, hopes were no doubt high for Minella Rebellion when he started his racing career in Britain in the care of trainer Nicky Henderson. A full brother to Cheltenham Festival winner and Grand National runner-up, Balthazar King, Minella Rebellion was sent off an odds-on favourite on his hurdling debut, but could finish only third, a finishing position not bettered in four subsequent runs before his final racecourse appearance, still aged just five, at Hexham in 2017. Those disappointments are now distant memories for the striking son of King’s Theatre following a meteoric rise through the showing ranks in the hands of Katie Dashwood, who had previously tasted success in the novice series final at the championships with the former Emma Lavelle trained Barlow in 2019. 10 WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Katie Dashwood acquired Minella Rebellion last year during lockdown following a recommendation from her friend, former Gold Cup winning trainer, Henrietta Knight. The horse has also benefitted from the tutelage of showing producer Jo Bates. Speaking afterwards, Katie Dashwood said: “I can’t believe it, I simply cannot believe it. He is a true showman, he loves it. I didn’t think we had a chance in the final and because I was so thrilled to have won the novice class I just went in and really enjoyed it. Our thanks to The Jockey Club and RoR – what a night!” Reserve Champion was the eight-year-old Rich Man Poor Man, ridden by Kirstine Douglas, who added success in a class at the RoR National Championships to the title of Tattersalls RoR Scottish Champion won in July. While third place went to First Fandango and Hannah Chisman, winners of the amateur ridden championship. The remaining finalists were the 2019 Supreme Champion, Mumford, plus the popular duo Hero Worship and Monkerty Tunkerty, with the two 18-year-olds showing they still had what it takes to compete at elite level in RoR classes. Described by his devoted rider, Abi Sole, as “like a fine wine” Hero Worship repeated his success of 2019 in the veteran’s class. Placed behind Hero Worship in the veteran’s class, Monkerty Tunkerty and Jess Westwood had earlier taken the Tattersalls Challenge Series final, the class combining jumping and showing. Afterwards, a visibly moved Jess thanked her horse, saying “RoR has allowed a career after racing for us both.” For over a decade Jess has ridden and trained Monkerty Tunkerty, from success in point to points to victories under rules and on into a post racing career of showing, dressage and jumping. Jess went on to reveal that ‘Monkey’ would retire from competitive action after the upcoming Horse Of The Year Show. The climax of the Northern Dressage Championships was the final for the RoR Elite Performance Award won by Crewezando and Patricia Haskins. The 15-year-old retired from racing in 2008 without a win from six starts but together with Patricia the pair have enjoyed success in a different sphere. Afterwards, an emotional Patricia was in awe of both the result and her horse: “It’s amazing, we never expected to win. It’s just amazing what these horses can do.”

The War Horse Memorial CIC works to pay tribute to the millions of horses, donkeys and mules who dedicated their lives to serving our soldiers during the Great War of 1914-18. ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS CHARITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT THE DASH CHARITY Today we are focusing on The Dash Charity (Domestic Abuse Stops Here) - a local charity supporting people experiencing domestic abuse - who are celebrating their 45th birthday this year. They support anyone no matter what their age or background through a range of free and confidential specialist services that offer safety, practical help and emotional support. During lockdown with the help of local support, the charity were able to keep all of their services running –helpline, outreach support and therapeutic sessions for children and young people. They received more families into their refuges during lockdown and even had a baby born shortly after their arrival! Local community groups supplied their families with food and essentials enabling care packages to be delivered to local families. Amongst other things, they delivered donations of weighted blankets to help children struggling with anxiety and video doorbells to clients who needed to feel safer in their home.

They supported over 1,000 people from the local area in 2020 with calls to their helpline and website enquiries doubling and referrals for children and young people tripling. The charity is investing in its children’s team to ensure nobody has to wait for the support they need. The demand for specialist support for children and young people is great and so they are also focusing on the bigger goal of building or finding a suitable space to create a bespoke children’s hub.

This will be a safe place where children and young people can receive one-to-one help, a place where it feels calm and fun and has all the resources they need to help their most vulnerable young survivors to recover. THE WAR HORSE MEMORIAL CIC National War Animal Day - Commemoration On Monday 23rd August 2021, a service was held to commemorate National War Animal Day, which recognises all animals who have given service and sacrifice. The service was arranged by the War Horse Memorial CIC (Community Interest Company) and took place besides “Poppy”, the magnificent war horse statue, which graces Heatherwood Roundabout and is a permanent memorial to the horses, mules and donkeys who lost their lives in the First World War. The symbol for the day was the purple poppy and, despite coronavirus restrictions, thousands of pin badges and knitted poppies for people and animals to wear have been sold by supporters. A reception followed at Ascot Racecourse which was attended by guests and celebrities including the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, representatives from the Household Cavalry Foundation and Britain’s Got Talent winner Colin Thackery who delighted everyone with his singing. Other distinguished guests included representatives of the Donkey Breed Society, The Horse Trust, Blue Acre Horse Rescue and Mane Chance founding Director Jenny Seagrove, the stage and screen actress. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Ray Dawson Ray Dawson had his best Ascot raceday to date when winning the “Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes” on Zain Claudette in July of this year. The popular Irishman is taking nothing for granted and following a spell on the side-lines through injury last year he is making the most of every opportunity that comes his way. Taking heed of the advice he was given when starting out, Ray can be found riding for some of the leading trainers and the 2021 season will no doubt go down as his best yet. In the Ascot Enquiry Ray shares his favourite Ascot moment so far, his racing heroes and the star-studded line-up of guests he would like to invite to Ascot to enjoy the racing. 1. Your favourite Ascot moment so far? Winning the “Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes” on Zain Claudette in July. 2. Did you always want to be a jockey? No, I wanted to be a rugby player until I was 15 years old and then decided to become a jockey. 3. Did you grow up riding ponies? Yes, I had a pony growing up and did plenty of showjumping and hunting so I was lucky in that respect. 4. Your racing hero? I would have to say both Ruby Walsh and Mick Kinane, I couldn’t choose between them! 5. Best advice ever given to you? Work as hard as you possibly can and don’t give up on your dreams. 6. The one horse from racing history you would have liked to ride? Frankel – doesn’t everyone say him? 7. The one Ascot race you would like to win? The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot would be fantastic. 8. If you were not a jockey which job would you be doing? Absolutely no idea. It would be a bit late to become a rugby player and I am absolutely useless at everything else! 9. Advice you would give to a wannabe jockey? The same advice that was given to me, work hard and don’t give up. 10. Five famous people (dead or alive) you would invite to a box at Ascot to enjoy a day’s racing?
