The Howden Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes is run in memory of Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Mercer, one of the leading riders in the 1950s. Manny tragically lost his life at Ascot following an accident at the start of the Red Deer Stakes in 1959 when his mount, Priddy Fair, reared at the start.

He rode 18 Royal Ascot winners in total and enjoyed Classic success winning the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas during his career as well as being runner-up in the 1954 Jockeys’ Championship. His brother was Joe Mercer, jockey to Queen Elizabeth II and a former champion himself.
