Ascot Racecard - Saturday 2nd November

C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E

Welcome to our first Jumps meeting of the 2024/25 season, the Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday.

This raceday ushers in the Jumps season at Ascot in thrilling fashion, with a competitive seven-race card featuring over £325,000 in prize money followed by one of the region’s largest fireworks displays, hosted in association with the Ascot Round Table.

This is the first of eight Jumps fixtures at Ascot in the 2024/25 season and we are delighted to offer more than £2.5 million in prize money. This year will see the inaugural running of the 1st Class Logistics Berkshire National, a three-mile six-furlong handicap, at the CopyBet November Racing Weekend later this month. We are also excited to be working with our colleagues at Royal Windsor on the launch of the Berkshire Winter Million which will take place from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th January, headlined by the Grade 1 BetMGM Clarence House Chase here at Ascot.

Today’s feature race is the Sodexo Live! Gold Cup, won in 2019 by Kim Bailey who saddles Cheltenham Festival winner Chianti Classico and course specialist Two For Gold this year. That’s the second of two £100,000 handicap chases on the card with the first being the Byrne Group Handicap Chase, won last year by Boothill, while this card in 2023 also saw Jango Baie win the GL events Novices’ Hurdle en route to Grade 1 success in the Formby Novices’ Hurdle.

Our grateful thanks go to all today’s sponsors for their support including Lavazza, Grundon Waste Management, GL events, Ascot Underwriting, Byrne Group and Sodexo Live!

We are pleased to once again promote our Bet With Ascot donation boxes across site for the 2024/25 Jumps season. Each box has two charities from which racegoers can choose to support by placing their losing betting slip, with their telephone number noted, into one of the boxes for a chance of winning a hospitality prize. At the end of the season, the charity box with the most slips receives £1,000 with £500 donated to the other charity. Today before racing we are presenting Sport In Mind with a cheque after they received the most ‘votes’ in our 2024 Flat season.

Our next meeting will be the CopyBet November Racing Weekend in just under three weeks. We hope to welcome you back to Ascot then.

Yours sincerely,

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

The Grundon Waste Management Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race

Our opener is a handicap hurdle for novice three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 Today’s trip is just over two miles and three furlongs In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170

PAGES 22-23

2nd Race 1.30pm

The Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase

This is a two mile and three furlong handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make these handicaps very competitive races

PAGES 28-30

3rd Race 2.05pm

The Byrne Group Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

The first of our premier handicap steeple chases, this specific race is for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles Like our previous races, this race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part.

PAGES 32-33

4th Race 2.35pm

The GL events Novices’ Hurdle Race Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular two-mile novices’ hurdle is for horses aged four and upwards.

PAGES 38-40

5th Race 3.15pm

The Lavazza Handicap Hurdle Race

This is a two mile handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards. This contest is similar to our previous race however it is for seasoned handicappers as opposed to novices’. Horses are allocated weights depending on their ratings

PAGES 44-46

6th Race 3.45pm

The Sodexo Live! Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)

The second of our premier handicap steeple chases, this specific race is for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over a distance of just under three miles Our feature race of the day also has no rating restrictions

PAGES 48-50

7th Race 4.20pm

The Ascot Round Table Open National Hunt Flat Race

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred to, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are unable to enter. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four & five and will be run over two miles

Official BHA Rating 162

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY

Easter Icon accounted for his nearest rival by two and a half lengths over an extended 2m5f at Fontwell last time and should remain competitive off a 7lb higher rating. However, the vote goes to NACHTGEIST, who finished well clear of the third when filling the runner-up spot at Huntingdon and is only 1lb higher. The four-year-old might be able to record his first success in this sphere, while Gentleman’s Relish is another to consider.

RACE SUMMARY

Samarrive hasn’t been seen since hitting the crossbar over track and trip just under a year ago and it would be no surprise to see him go close off 2lb lower on his return to action. However, he might come out second best to BHALOO, who occupied the runner-up berth on his handicap debut over hurdles at Warwick in May and now makes his first chase start. Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old might prove a different proposition over fences and gets the nod. What Path completes the shortlist.

Today, we are pleased to announce the Flat season winners of our Bet With Ascot (BWA) donation box scheme. This initiative enables customers to deposit their losing betting slips into one of our charity boxes, supporting our nominated equine or local charity in return for the chance of winning a hospitality prize.

Sport in Mind were the winners for the 2024 Flat season and today will be presented with a cheque for £1,000 Our equine charity, Windsor & Ascot Carriage Driving for the Disabled Group, will receive a £500 donation as the worthy runner-up The nominated charities for our 2024/5 Jumps season are equine charity Riding a Dream Academy and local charity, Busy Buttons.

Riding a Dream Academy

Inspired by Khadijah Mellah, the first British Muslim women to ride in and win a British horse race, the academy aims to help young people from diverse communities, disadvantaged backgrounds and urban equestrian centres get involved in horse racing.

Supported by the British Racing School, the Academy offers a scholarship programme for aspiring riders aged 14-16, residential weeks which provide a fun introduction to horse racing, riding and horse care, and taster weeks where students can experience riding for the first time.

In September 2024, Ascot Racecourse were delighted to team up with the Academy to host taster days for 50 students from Slough. Five secondary schools were invited to take part in the pilot scheme and bring 10 students aged 14-16 to experience a hands-on introduction to the sport. Hosted at our stables, five specially chosen horses and ponies were brought from the British Racing School to allow the students to participate in a range of activities during their day.

Busy Buttons CORE Charity

Busy Buttons is a local volunteer led registered charity committed to inclusively helping children find their unique potential using creativity and imagination. It offers a range of arts & craft programmes, courses and creative wellbeing camps for young people. It engages with many children who face barriers or who have special educational needs (or “superpowers”), providing opportunities to take part in practical art and design projects that they cannot get elsewhere. The charity takes time to understand each participant’s individual needs and promotes art for mental wellbeing.

As a directly licensed Duke of Edinburgh Award centre, a Trinity College accredited Arts Award centre and Ofsted registered, the charity also supports young people unable to attend school due to anxiety or special needs at their alternative provision.

Ascot Racecourse sponsor the charity, in conjunction with the Royal Windsor Flower Show, to run an all-inclusive workshop which sees approximately 300 children from 10 local schools create a display for the children’s marquee at the show in June.

RACE SUMMARY

Saint Segal returned from a wind operation to finish a well-beaten fourth at Chepstow last month, but he might improve on that effort and isn’t dismissed off a 2lb lower mark. However, MARTATOR looks the way to go Venetia Williams’ seven-year-old completed a hat-trick in fine style at Sandown on his latest outing and a 7lb rise might prove to be lenient. Frere d’Armes was denied by a length into second at Kempton recently and can fight it out for the minor honours.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.

More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty

generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

BRAVEMANSGAME took this event in 2022 and although he didn’t hit the same heights last term he has a good record fresh and looks the one to beat on the back of a wind operation. Irish challenger Conflated is on a lengthy losing sequence but also has the form to have a say, while The Real Whacker could be the each-way angle

RACE SUMMARY

Having been withdrawn at Cheltenham last week after unseating his jockey and getting loose, Fiercely Proud must keep his temperament in check. Ben Pauling’s gelding should have more to offer in this second season over hurdles and he isn’t taken lightly, but SECRET SQUIRREL finished two places ahead in fifth when they clashed in the Novices’ Championship Final at Sandown in April and shades the verdict. Hat-trick seeking duo Break My Soul and Stream Of Stars may fare best of the remainder

HIGHSTAKESPLAYER reappeared from a long absence to score at Kempton in February and after possibly bouncing in the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury 22 days later, he then registered another Kempton victory. Having gone well fresh on a right-handed track previously, this unexposed staying chaser gets the vote to score off 5lb higher. Cheltenham Festival winner Chianti Classico wasn’t disgraced when fourth in an Aintree Grade 1 and enters calculations, with Amirite and Neon Moon just two more to consider

F O R T H E C O M M U N I T Y

What an incredible year it’s been for the Ascot Round Table. The 2023 Ascot Fireworks display was our biggest yet and that was all down to you and everyone else who attended. So, a big thank you from us.

As you may know Ascot Round Table is a community organisation of loyal, committed and connected volunteers who generously give their time and energy throughout the year to ensure the Fireworks display goes off without a hitch.

If you can believe it, we’ve been running the Fireworks in Ascot for nearly 42 years! From the first show for just a few hundred people in the field next to Ascot train station to 2008 when we partnered with Ascot Racecourse to deliver what we think you will all agree is a truly magical experience.

What’s even better is that all the money generated goes right back into communities and charities in Ascot and the surrounding areas. Charities such as Daisy’s Dream that supports and comforts families across Berkshire who have tragically lost a parent or carer, and Sebastian’s Action Trust that brings an endless stream of kindness, care and compassion to the local community by offering respite holidays to families with very sick children, enabling precious time to be spent together.

Caring for families and children is a passion of ours and this year we had the chance to support many exciting projects around mental health for students. At Charters School and Cranbourne Primary School we helped with the creation of wellness gardens that provide a much-needed calm space for children who need it, while at St Michaels CofE Primary School our donations enabled the building of key fencing to ensure the grassed areas could be safely enjoyed by all the students.

All in all we were able to donate over £70,000 to community projects and charities. So once again, a huge thank you for supporting us.

Of course, there is no work without play and Ascot Round Table members regularly get together to socialise. Round Table nights can vary with activities such as white-water rafting, hiking, zorbing, crazy golf, learning how to make the perfect sushi or taking a tour of the local brewery The shared camaraderie brings members together and life-long friendships are formed.

If being a key part of a like-minded group supporting the community excites you or you know something that deserves our support visit Ascotroundtable.com to get in touch.

Thank you so much for being a part of this incredible event.

RACE SUMMARY

MISS IRELAND belied obvious inexperience to make a winning start under Rules in a Fontwell bumper and that looked a smart effort, despite her eccentricities throughout the race Sporting first-time cheekpieces, she gets the vote to go in again and confirm herself a promising individual. There is plenty to like about Eternal Angel’s chances on paper and he must enter calculations on his introduction for a top stable. Kajikia and Oakley’s Way are also noteworthy.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
