Saturday 23rd November 2024

C H A I R M A N ’ S W E L C O M E

Welcome to the second day of the CopyBet November Racing Weekend.

Today’s action on the track is headlined by a pair of Grade 2 contests, the CopyBet 1965 Chase and the Howden Ascot Hurdle, with both races featuring last year’s winners. The former race was won by Pic D’Orhy for trainer Paul Nicholls, jockey Harry Cobden and owners Johnny and Samantha de la Hey, who backed up that success with an impressive win in the Betfair Ascot Chase in February. The race celebrates the first year that Ascot hosted Jumps racing and time will tell whether Pic D’Orhy can become just the third dual winner of the race, joining Master Minded and Al Ferof – both of whom, incidentally, were trained by Nicholls. The same trio of connections were also responsible for Blueking D’Oroux’s win in last year’s Grade 2 Ascot Hurdle and he bids to become the ninth horse to double-up in this £100,000 race, sponsored for the first time by Howden – we thank them for their continued partnership with Ascot. It looks like being a strong renewal with Cheltenham Festival winner Golden Ace and Triumph Hurdle third Salver both scheduled to line up

Our thanks go to CopyBet for their generous sponsorship of this two-day meeting as well as three races on today’s card. We also extend our gratitude to race sponsors Restorations UK and Lay & Wheeler for their continued involvement with Ascot. In addition, today we are delighted to host the inaugural Berkshire National Handicap Chase, sponsored by 1st Class Logistics. The support of our sponsors has helped us to offer over £410,000 of prize money on today’s seven-race card.

Off the track, there is plenty to get involved with as Great British Racing host the second of their annual Racecourse Ownership Days at Ascot. Frankie Foster will be on course hosting a range of talks on shared ownership options, and around 15 syndicates and shared ownership representatives will be available to speak to

Our next meeting is the two-day Howden Christmas Racing Weekend on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st December, featuring the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle on Saturday, which is also our final Family Raceday of 2024. We hope to see you back at Ascot then.

Yours sincerely,

RACING PAGES

Your guide to all of today’s races

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two mile, five and a half furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

PAGES 20-22

2nd Race 12.55pm

The CopyBet Mares’ Handicap Hurdle

This race is restricted to fillies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130. It will be run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125

PAGES 24-25

3rd Race 1.30pm

The CopyBet 1965 Chase (Grade 2)

The first of our two Grade 2 contests today, these races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. Initially, the weights in this two mile and five furlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex, with four-year-olds in receipt of a 9lb allowance. Penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success

PAGES 30-32

4th Race 2.05pm

The 1ST Class Logistics Berkshire National Handicap Chase

This is a three mile and five furlong handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

PAGES 38-39

5th Race 2.45pm

The Howden Ascot Hurdle (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2)

Like our third race, this is another Grade 2 event, although this one is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part.

PAGES 44-46

6th Race 3.20pm

The Lay & Wheeler Hurst Park Handicap Chase

Our penultimate race is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and one furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, this has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

PAGES 48-50

7th Race 3.50pm

The CopyBet Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

Our final race is another novice hurdle, these races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season which is towards the end of April. However, for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular three mile novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than three hurdle races.

Official BHA Rating 162

21. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY

Kloth Of Utopia is a half-brother to the classy Theleme and the French raider, who won at Auteuil last month, looks an exciting prospect. Ground conditions won’t be as testing on this occasion, though, and he will need to prove himself, so the vote goes to TOUQUET. Paul Nicholls’ gelding impressed when winning decisively on his hurdling debut recently and with a step up in trip likely to suit, it would come as no surprise were he to find further progress. Excello was pulled up in the Ultima when last seen but he’s of definite interest back over hurdles.

RACE SUMMARY

BATWOMEN proved she was no joker in the pack when making a successful handicap debut at Fontwell last month. A subsequent 5lb rise shouldn’t prevent the unexposed mare from mounting another stern challenge and she gets the vote over Perth scorer Scarlet O’Tara. Midnightreflection had been in better form prior to landing this under Charlie Case 12 months ago, but given that she is now 8lb below that mark it would be unwise to rule her out.

A bloodless winner of this contest 12 months ago, he later added the Ascot Chase to his CV before being pulled up in the Melling at Aintree Wind surgery might have done him the world of good and he receives a confident vote Le Patron looks best placed to chase the pair home.

RACE SUMMARY

Art Decco commands respect on the back of registering a hat-trick over fences and may have more to give even though he has risen 19lb in the process. However, these are deeper waters and with that in mind, last season’s Midlands National winner, BEAUPORT, could be the way to go. Effective when fresh, this should be an ideal test of stamina for the consistent nine-year-old, whose chance would be enhanced if further rain hit the track. Fortescue and Inis Oirr are a couple of other doughty stayers to consider

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.

For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.

At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.

More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses

During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty

generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY

Doyen Quest impressed when forging clear in a Cheltenham handicap over 3m last weekend and, officially 5lb well-in at the weights under a penalty, he looks obvious shortlist material. That said, if the quick turnaround catches him out, it may be BACKMERSACKME who takes full advantage. The son of Getaway wasn’t disgraced when finishing fourth on his handicap debut off this mark over 2m4f at Worcester in September and, fit from a satisfactory spin on the Flat last month, he gets the vote Catch Him Derry has done nothing but improve and is overlooked at your peril

RACE SUMMARY

GOLDEN ACE, who supplemented her Ryanair Mares’ Hurdle win at the Cheltenham Festival with a comfortable Listed-race success at the same venue when she was last seen, is hard to oppose with her bid to maintain her unbeaten status over timber The terms of this event give her a solid chance of coping with her penalties gained as a novice and further progression is very possible. Last year’s winner Blueking D’oroux is an obvious threat given his record when fresh. Triumph Hurdle third Salver also adds depth to a solid renewal.

RACE SUMMARY

Grey Dawning has to be respected on his return to action following a very successful novice campaign, but he could be vulnerable in this company without a prep run. With that in mind, preference is for HEWICK, who improved on his comeback performance when narrowly denied by Envoi Allen at Down Royal earlier in the month. Last season’s King George winner went on to finish third in a top-class renewal of the Punchestown Gold Cup in May and is arguably the one to beat on that form. Royale Pagaille cannot be discounted having taken this contest 12 months ago, while Bravemansgame should not be written off in first-time blinkers.

RACE SUMMARY

MARTATOR was value for more than the winning margin when scoring over C&D on his return earlier in the month and the seven-year-old should be able to uphold form with Kotmask (third). He can land the five-timer at the main expense of Marvel De Cerisy, who has made a terrific start to the season in France with valuable wins over both hurdles and fences. Sans Bruit went well for a long way in the Haldon Gold Cup and must be considered on his return to this level.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
