PROGRAMME £5.00 Friday 20th December 2024 H O W D E N C H R I S T M A S F R I DAY R AC E DAY
Welcome to the first day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend.
As we reflect on 2024, we do so with great pride having seen some truly memorable performances at Ascot once again. From Rosallion, Auguste Rodin and Kyprios at Royal Ascot through to Goliath in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Charyn in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, we have been fortunate to welcome some of the world’s very best racehorses throughout the year.
Off the track, it is particularly fulfilling to look back on the work that Ascot Racecourse Supports has achieved, some of which is highlighted in these pages. Today you will be able to see a sample of the work we do in the community through our Christmas Schools Photography Competition with some of the entries on display in the Grandstand. Tomorrow, our guest judge, Millie Pilkington, will present prizes to the worthy winners for the second year You may be aware that Millie is the photographer who took the photograph being used in Their Majesties’ Christmas card this year.
Today’s feature race is the Grade 2 Howden Noel Novices’ Steeple Chase, often a high-class contest with form worth following. Gary Moore won the race in 2017 with Benatar and, now training in partnership with son Josh, they saddle Mark Of Gold today.
Our thanks, as ever, go to Howden for their continued support of racing at Ascot as an Official Partner as well as title sponsor of this weekend. Across the two days they are hosting and entertaining many staff members and their families and we offer them a warm welcome.
Tomorrow is our final race meeting of 2024, headlined by the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. We hope to see you then.
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt.
His
Majesty’s Representative
& Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Howden Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race
Today’s opener is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170
PAGES 20-22
2nd Race 1.20pm
The Howden Maiden Hurdle Race
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, five and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.
PAGES 24-25
3rd Race 1.55pm
The Howden Novices’
Limited Handicap Steeple Chase Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. Although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season, they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and one furlong novices’ handicap steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases
PAGES 30-33
4th Race 2.30pm
The RaceTech Handicap Hurdle Race
Our fourth race is a two miles handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115
PAGES 34-35
5th Race 3.05pm
The Howden Noel Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2)
Today’s feature, a two mile, two-and-a-half-furlong steeplechase, is a Grade 2 race for novices It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards and initially, the weights are set according to sex with fillies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals. Penalties are then awarded dependant on previous steeplechase victories
PAGES 40-42
6th Race 3.40pm
The King Edward VII Ascot Membership Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race)
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five, and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs As this is a Listed Race, expect some smart types to line up here and be useful hurdles/chasers in the future.

Official BHA Rating 162
21. Official BHA Rating
The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

The very warmest of welcomes to our third Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. They say all good things come in threes and this year we’ve got three wonderful things to celebrate.
First and foremost, we’ll be cheering on some fantastic sport with six races on the card each day. As ever the highlight will be Saturday’s Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. I can’t wait to see the winning horse cross the finish line and cheer their connections as they lift their trophies.
Second, we’re celebrating an incredible year of racing. We only need to think back to a golden summer at Royal Ascot. We witnessed incredible performances, surprises galore and some shockingly good weather!
And, while this is the fifth year of our supremely successful partnership with Ascot, one of the crown jewels of British horse racing, our commitment to the sport is now truly global. I’m hugely proud that we now sponsor some of the world’s most iconic race meetings including the VRC in Australia and the Bahrain Turf Club, among others.
But there’s a third reason we’re celebrating today. We’re also anticipating all the exciting events coming down the track. Big things are happening, and it starts today with the launch of our Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP). Instead of putting ex-racehorses out to pasture, we’re going to ensure owners have the information and skills they need to make sure those horses enjoy a second life – retraining them and giving them other opportunities. Who knows? Perhaps they’ll even make it as world class event horses I certainly hope so I’m as passionate about eventing as I am about racing which is why I have the great privilege of hosting the Cornbury House Horse Trials in Oxfordshire at my home.
Of course, I’ve barely “tapped” the surface of what’s to come. 2025 will truly be a bumper year of sport for Howden. Not least because we’re proud principal partners of the legendary British & Irish Lions who tour Australia for the first time in more than a decade. As the players run onto the pitch and the great “sea of red” rises to applaud them, it will be the Howden name on those iconic red jerseys. And we’re also backing the first ever Women’s Lions Tour to follow in New Zealand in 2027.
So let’s toast the end of a magnificent year Enjoy the weekend. Have fun cheering on the winners with your family. Pop a few champagne corks and celebrate the end of 2024 in style. Meanwhile, I’ll look forward to seeing you back in 2025 Rested, ready and raring to make it another year to remember.

RACE SUMMARY
IRISH HILL filled the runner-up spot in this grade at Wincanton last month and competes off the same rating. Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old is a previous course winner and it would be no surprise to see him make it two wins from his last three starts. Don Rafael returned to winning ways at Hereford on his most recent start, but this looks like a much tougher assignment off 5lb higher. Of the remainder, Stoner’s Choice makes the most appeal

RACE SUMMARY
Point-to-point winner Tommy The Tank showed lots of ability to take the silver medal home on his first outing over hurdles at Fontwell in October and, with normal progression, he could have a say. However, it’s hard to ignore the claims of BELLIANO The son of Black Sam Bellamy only found a subsequent winner too good on his debut under Rules at Chepstow and should have plenty more to offer Country Park is another to note

TOGETHER AS ONE, SLOUGH : BOOST
Boost is an innovative mental health project led by Together As One and CAMHS This initiative is designed to assist young people who are struggling while waiting for mental health support.
Year 1 outcomes: At the project’s start, young people faced an 11-month wait for specialist community intervention, which deeply impacted their well-being and family stability. To address this, the project trained “near-peer” Boost workers to provide one-on-one psychoeducational support to those on the waiting list, focusing on mental health and practical challenges like education or housing.
In its first year, 95% of referred participants engaged, with 80% achieving personalised goals through tailored approaches such as casual conversations during activities or home visits for those with social anxiety
SPORT IN MIND, READING : EXPANSION OF SERVICES
Sport in Mind (SIM) is the UK’s leading mental health sports charity, delivering physical activity sessions in partnership with the NHS in order to aid recovery, promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.
Year 1 outcomes: SIM organised 194 multisport and football sessions across Maidenhead, Bracknell and Reading, creating safe, inclusive spaces for young people to improve their mental health through physical activity These sessions fostered friendships, community support networks and catered to diverse needs, including those with anxiety, low self-esteem or anger issues. By welcoming participants of all abilities and supporting non-native English speakers, the program reduced isolation and enhanced communication skills.

RACE SUMMARY
Here Comes Georgie made his second chase start a successful one when scoring at Wetherby last month and he should mount a bold bid off only a 3lb higher rating. However, IBERICO LORD gets the nod. Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old struck in good style on his chasing debut at Kempton and holds an entry in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival. He could put these to the sword before moving up the class ladder, while Ryan’s Rocket can beat Western Zephyr home for third.

A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.
For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.
More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty
generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

RACE SUMMARY
GOLDEN MOVE had his handicap debut over hurdles won some way out at Wincanton 15 days ago and there is likely more to come. An 8lb hike in the ratings shouldn’t be the ceiling of the four-yearold’s ability and he’s fancied to follow up. The biggest threat may emerge from We’re Red And Blue, who made all in a maiden hurdle at Carlisle last month. Fasol, a stablemate of the selection, must also enter calculations. RACE

RACE SUMMARY
Although JOHNNYWHO was a little underwhelming when finishing third in the Grade 2 John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury three weeks ago, that looked a deeper contest and he might be able to get back on track. Chase debutant Mark Of Gold arrives on the back of a solid second at Plumpton and he may give the selection most to think about, ahead of Rare Edition, who should put the experience of last month’s C&D second to good use.

RACE SUMMARY
There are plenty of smart prospects on show in what should prove to be a strong bumper Dan Skelton landed last year’s contest with Let It Rain, and another victory could be on the cards courtesy of MONEYGARROW. The son of Shantou followed up his ready victory between the flags when scoring in good fashion on his Rules bow at Chepstow in October Fresh Perspective boasts a similar profile after last month’s triumph at Uttoxeter and he merits consideration along with Doctor Blue, while market support for Rules newcomer No Drama This End would also be interesting.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
