Welcome to our first meeting of 2025, the BetMGM Clarence House Chase Raceday.
We kick off the year with an exciting seven-race card featuring £418,000 in prize money and we would like to thank BetMGM for their generous sponsorship of this raceday and six races on the card.
This is the second day of the inaugural Berkshire Winter Million – yesterday featured action from our neighbours at Royal Windsor Racecourse and the final day of the meeting will be back at Windsor tomorrow. We are very excited to be a partner in the launch of this new weekend of stellar Jumps action and look forward to it growing in popularity in the coming years.
Today’s feature is the BetMGM Clarence House Chase, the first Grade 1 race of 2025 in Great Britain. Having lost this meeting to frost in the past two years we can now look back to one of the greatest renewals in 2022 when Shishkin got up in the final strides to beat Energumene. Willie Mullins’ 11-year-old is back again today and faces another Nicky Henderson two-mile superstar in Jonbon. With fellow Grade 1 winner, Edwardstone, also set to run as well as three-time course and distance winner, Boothill, we are hopeful of another thrilling contest this afternoon.
Other highlights on the card include the Grade 2 BetMGM Mares’ Hurdle featuring one of last season’s leading juveniles, Kargese. We would like to thank bet365 for their support of the £100,000 two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase which has been won before by future Grade 1 winners Dashel Drasher and Cyrname.
Our raceday sponsors BetMGM have kindly donated their complimentary ticket allocation to the Injured Jockeys Fund and we are delighted that around 75 of the charity’s beneficiaries will be joining us at Ascot today. Our IJF Ambassador’s Programme raised a total of £23,500 for the charity last year and before racing gets underway we will be presenting a cheque for that value to Ed Chamberlin, who is the Vice Chairman of the IJF.
Our next meeting is the Betfair Ascot Chase Raceday on Saturday 15th February – we hope to welcome you back here then.

RACING PAGES
Your guide to all of today’s races
The BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
Our opener is a Juvenile hurdle which is designed solely for four-year-olds in order to allow the younger horses to gain valuable experience by racing against each other before taking on their older, more battle-hardened rivals Initially every runner in this two-mile hurdle is allotted 11st (fillies 10st 13lb), before previous winners are given a penalty
PAGES 18-19
2nd Race 1.05pm
The BetMGM Handicap Chase
This handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140 is run over three miles In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival.
PAGES 22-23
3rd Race 1.40pm
The BetMGM Mares’ Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
Grade 2 races are high class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch fillies and mares lining up, and possibly some Cheltenham Festival contenders Initially, the weights in this two miles hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age, before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Premier Handicap victory to 6lb for a Grade 2 or Grade 1 success.
PAGES 28-29
4th Race 2.15pm
The bet365 Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Our fourth race is another handicap, this time for steeple chasers aged five-years-old and upwards, run over two miles and about five furlongs To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms, a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.
PAGES 32-34
5th Race 2.50pm
The BetMGM Holloway’s
Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
The next race this afternoon is a two mile, three furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards. As all handicaps throughout the day, the weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating.
PAGES 38-39
6th Race 3.32pm
The BetMGM Clarence House Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards to be run over two miles and about one furlong. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football - quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race so the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex.
PAGES 42-43
7th Race 4.02pm
The BetMGM EBF ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle Race (GBB Race)
As the title suggests, novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. This race differs slightly from a standard novice event in that it is restricted to horses that have been specifically bred for National Hunt racing - horses that have previously run on the Flat are barred from taking part. This two mile and about five and a half furlong hurdle race is for horses aged four to seven, which are E.B.F eligible and have not won more than two hurdle races

On 12th December 2024, students from 10 local schools attended the final of the Ascot Racecourse Supports Community Challenge, a new 3-year initiative shaped to engage students in volunteering and giving back to their communities
Delivered by educational charity, Learning to Work, and supported by Ascot Racecourse Supports and Berkshire Community Foundation, each school received a seed fund of £50. Year 9 students were then tasked with selecting a team of six to represent their school, researching and linking themselves with a local charity and then developing a programme built on the concept of making a difference to the lives of others
Students from Altwood School, Charters School, Churchmead School, Eden Girls’ School, Garth Hill College, Herschel Grammar, Kings Academy Easthampstead Park, Langley Grammar School, Oakbank School and Windsor Girls’ School attended the racecourse to present their fundraising initiatives and achievements to a panel of Judges
Results:
1st Place - Garth Hill College for its work with BIBS (Babies in Buscot Support), a charity supporting babies and their families in the special care baby unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
2nd Place - Eden Girls’ School for its link with Slough Homeless Our Concern.
3rd Place - Herschel Grammar for its link with Thames Valley Adventure Playground.
In addition to the funds raised by schools, the three winning teams were also given a boost to their funds via a donation from our Ascot Racecourse Supports programme. Students were also rewarded for their hard work and commitment to the programme with an invitation to attend our Spring Family Raceday in March.
To date, the initiative has raised over £8,000 for the ten charities and fundraising is still ongoing. The efforts of all concerned have been fantastic and made a significant difference to the lives of others.
It was clear all students had worked incredibly hard which was demonstrated with their thorough presentations Their dedication to the challenge and passion for BIBS was extremely evident from their hard work, teamwork and fundraising total! Everyone at BIBS would like to thank them … for giving us the opportunity to receive a £1000 donation from Ascot Racecourse as a result from their win … The whole initiative was fantastic, and it was great to be in a room with the future generation of enthusiastic volunteers and fundraisers.”
Liz Josif, Fundraising Manager, BIBS. We have invited volunteers from BIBS to be our nominated bucket collectors today, so please donate if you are able.

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

RACE SUMMARY
There has been a fair amount of support for LULAMBA in the ante-post market for the Triumph Hurdle since the turn of the year, as he won his only start at Auteuil in October. Nicky Henderson boasts a terrific record with juveniles over the years and this may be another potential star recruit following on from Sir Gino last season. Mondo Man finished fifth in the Prix du Jockey Club and brings a strong level of Flat form to the table, while Viyanni and St Pancras complete the shortlist.

IN D’OR was a useful type over hurdles last season and looked to have improved when making a successful chasing bow at Taunton in November The seven-year-old is in the right hands to progress further and gets the vote ahead of the hat-trick seeking Rockinastorm, who went up 3lb for scoring at Wetherby last month. Unanswered Prayers didn’t quite get home over 3m5f in the London National at Sandown, but that was a commendable effort and he isn’t discounted dropping in trip.

RACE SUMMARY
KARGESE was one of the leading juveniles last season with a brace of Grade 1 successes coming either side of two fine efforts in defeat at Cheltenham and Aintree. The form has been franked by both Majborough and Sir Gino and this appears to be a nice starting point for Willie Mullins’ mare. Take No Chances ran extremely well when giving weight to a pair of progressive rivals at Cheltenham latest and she is expected to be competitive along with Casa No Mento.

INJURED JOCKEYS FUND
We are delighted to report that our Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) Ambassadors Programme, which sees ex-jockeys provide our Fine Dining guests with an informative talk and tour, raised a total of £23,500 in 2024 via on the day donations from guests. This programme was initiated in 2017 and to date has raised over £190,000 for the charity
Today, our raceday sponsor BetMGM has kindly donated its ticket allocation to the IJF and we are delighted that 75 of the charity’s beneficiaries from their Lambourn, Epsom and Newmarket hubs are joining us to enjoy racing and accept a cheque from Ascot Racecourse which will be presented to ITV’s Ed Chamberlin, Vice Chairman of the charity.
HOME-START, BRACKNELL
Our free raceday booking fees in November generated £6,700 which we have donated to Home-Start, Bracknell – a charity that forms part of a network of 180 branches offering parents with young children support in dealing with many issues such as isolation, mental health and disability.
SCATTERING OF ASHES
Many racegoers choose to have the ashes of loved ones scattered at Ascot Racecourse. Whilst we do not charge for the service, we do ask for a charitable donation. Blue Acre Horse Rescue in Windsor were the nominated beneficiary for 2024. For more information on this service, email csr@ascot.com
2025 ASCOT SHOP DONATIONS
New for 2025, we are offering racegoers the opportunity to make a charitable donation at our Ascot Shop tills when purchasing goods
This year’s nominated charity will be People to Places – a Maidenhead based charity who offer community transport to residents in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead area. This nomination forms part of wider funding by our Ascot Racecourse Supports programme for the charity which will be announced later in the year.
Thank you to all racegoers who helped contribute to these charitable donations. 2 0 2 4 E N D O F Y E A R D O N A T I O N S

RACE SUMMARY
With three previous wins over these fences, returning to this familiar venue should suit MARTATOR now he steps back up in trip after finding a couple too good in the Desert Orchid at Kempton over Christmas. Kotmask and Scarface are closely matched on recent form and also hold solid credentials. However, perhaps Hitman could be the best each-way alternative given this represents a drop in class.

CONQUEST
A T A S C O T R A C E C O U R S E
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants.
For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have proven to reduce fallers by 11% compared to the traditional birch hurdles while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance.
More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses
During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty
generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006 The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016 Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

BETTING FORECAST: Correct as of 4.00pm 17/01/25 4-6 Jonbon (FR), 2-1 Energumene (FR), 10-1 Edwardstone (GB), 18-1 Boothill (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY
The top-class Energumene returned from a 593-day absence to score easily in a Grade 2 at Cork last month and although he’s worthy of the utmost respect, this is all about JONBON. Nicky Henderson’s star chaser recorded an eighth Grade 1 triumph when bolting up in the Tingle Creek last month and with no signs of slowing down, he’s expected to do the business. It was much more like it from Edwardstone in the Desert Orchid, but he still has plenty to find in this company.

Country Park made stylish headway before coming to grief two from home over C&D recently, and he is a big player given a clean round Others to note include Laurens Bay and Jax Junior

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
