IPCO King George Diamond Day is the mid-summer highlight of Ascot’s Flat season, headlined by the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. The £875,000 feature race is Europe’s mid-summer middle-distance showpiece with a rich roll of honour. The race was developed by Major John Crocker Bulteel, Clerk of the Course at Ascot at the time, who wanted to create an international race over a mile and a half that would bring together horses aged three and older. In the 70 runnings of the race to date it has done exactly that and there have been 13 colts that have won the Derby at Epsom and followed up in the King George. Today Adayar will bid to become the 14th although he is just the fourth to try since the late great Galileo was the last to do the double in 2001. That day Galileo saw off Fantastic Light in an epic battle and today has the makings of another classic with Adayar set to take on superstar filly Love along with the globetrotting Mishriff and the Irish Derby runner-up Lone Eagle. Of course in recent history Taghrooda and Enable have

won the Oaks at Epsom before going on to King George glory and Almshar and Nathaniel were also three-year-olds who have won the race. In total 30 threeyear-olds have won against 40 older horses. Last year Enable made history by being the first horse to win the race three times, eclipsing Swain and Dahlia who both won it twice. Enable was also the third filly since 2012 to win the race, joining Taghrooda and Danedream. Immediately before the main race of the day is the Moet & Chandon International Stakes, one of several very valuable seven furlong Heritage Handicaps held at Ascot during the season. Worth in excess of £100,000, it always attracts a very competitive field and a devilishly difficult challenge for punters to unpick. The 2019 winner, Raising Sand, is in the field again today while in 2016 Librisa Breeze won this race before tasting Group 1 glory the following season. Elsewhere on the card is the Group 3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes over six furlongs for two-yearold fillies. The race was established in 1946 and is named after King George VI’s

youngest daughter. Lester Piggott won the race 10 times during his career while Sir Michael Stoute is the leading trainer with ﬁve winners, including Russian Rhythm in 2002 who went on to win the 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and the Nassau Stakes as a three-year-old. The concluding race is the Longines Handicap for Female Amateur Jockeys. It is one of the two really special races for female amateurs in the calendar along with the Queen Mother’s Cup at York and is always a hugely popular contest. Over the years some very famous names have ridden in the race including the 1989 renewal when HRH The Princess Royal took part alongside Clare Balding. This year Cheltenham Festival winning jockey Gina Andrews has a ride on the top weight Mustarrid. QIPCO King George Diamond Day is one of the highest-proﬁle days in the racing calendar and having taken place behind closed doors last year it is great that a thrilling day of action on the track will take place in 2021 with a large crowd in attendance again.

ut for many, Nathaniel’s Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory in 2011 will feel like an awfully long time ago, not least because in the intervening years we have welcomed, celebrated and wished a happy retirement to one of the greatest race mares of all time: his daughter, Enable. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes will forever be associated with Enable. Her hat-trick of victories in the race gave her history-making status, while her spine-tingling tussle with Crystal Ocean in the 2018 renewal of the contest was, and will doubtless continue to be, likened to the 1975 battle between Grundy and Bustino, which racing fans joyfully reminisce over annually. But lest we forget, her success in the race was also poignant given that she was following in the hoofprints of her sire, Nathaniel, winner of

Ascot’s July showpiece ten years ago now. Nathaniel had always been held in high regard by the John Gosden stable from before the evening he ran Frankel to within half a length on their Newmarket debuts in the August of their juvenile seasons. Having bypassed the Derby at Epsom, Nathaniel came off an emphatic five length win in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot to triumph in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes for the Classic generation. The visually impressive three lengths that he put between himself and the rest of the field at the line was even more notable for the fact that he relegated Workforce, the 2010 Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe champion, to the runner-up spot. Nathaniel made a successful, if belated, return to the track in 2012 when winning the Group 1 Coral

Eclipse, but two weeks later a gallant effort at a second consecutive King George was thwarted in a thrilling headbob finish by Danedream. An unusually short break between the two races might have disadvantaged Nathaniel, but that said, there was no shame in going down by just a nose to the champion filly, having given her a 3lb allowance. Roll on five years and Newsells Park Stud in Hertfordshire had already begun to reap the rewards of buying into Nathaniel as a stallion prospect over the 2011-12 winter. Their newest recruit’s first crop of threeyear-olds was spearheaded by the dual Oaks winner, Enable, who continued her relentless ascent up the ranks when emulating her sire as a three-year-old winner of the King George, pulling four and a half lengths clear of a topclass field that included no less than seven global Group 1 winners. elevated her to new heights and reinforced her status as racing’s new superstar. Enable would of course go on to make history in winning the King George on two further occasions: in that unforgettable duel with Crystal Ocean in 2018, and then for a record third time when staging a bloodless victory over the Derby winner, Serpentine, in 2019. Enable is now enjoying her second career, as a broodmare in the paddocks at her owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms’ Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, and we can look forward to seeing her ﬁrst foal by champion miler Kingman next Spring. By making the case for how much he and indeed his siblings improved from two to three-years-old – remember that he improved 37lbs from two to three – we were able to persuade some breeders to be patient, but his book of mares following his first twoyear-olds was his smallest by some margin. “However, here was Enable, a filly from his very first crop, carrying all before her, beating both sexes and all ages. She certainly put Nathaniel on the map and while he has produced another Classic winner in French Oaks winner, Channel, as well as a multitude of other Group 1, 2 & 3 winners, Nathaniel will probably always be remembered as the sire of Enable.”

You have won the King George and incredible 7 times, which win meant the most and why? The King George is one of the hardest races to win as it comes mid season with horse of all ages in great form but top of the list for obvious reasons has to be Enable but Swain was special as well. Enable must hold a special place in your heart, what made her so good? She had composure combined with class and aggression on the big days when it mattered. Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Montjeu, Galileo and Daylami are all entered in the King George – which horse would you pick to ride? Daylami, of course, but what a line-up that would be! Your favourite Ascot memory of all time? The seven timer in 1996 but every Gold Cup is special as well. Who was your racing idol growing up? Lester Piggott, Steve Cauthen and Pat Eddery. A younger jockey to look out for? Oisin Murphy and Tom Marquand. Best piece of advice you were ever given? Be patient and don’t be frightened to ride from the front. The one horse from history you would have liked to ride in any race. So hard as I have been on some of the greats so perhaps any of the great Derby winners. Your career has spanned over 30 years – how do you keep yourself motivated? I love to win races and I enjoy riding for John Gosden.

Mill Reef In December 1969, a horse arrived on British shores who was about to stamp his own mark on the English racing scene. Bred in the US, Mill Reef is one of the most famous racehorses of all time. This weekend at Ascot Racecourse, he will be awarded with the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award.

his award is presented every year to the winner of a vintage renewal, to mark QIPCO’s sponsorship of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which will be run on Saturday 24th July, 2021.

This year – 2021 – marks 50 years since Mill Reef triumphed in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a three-year-old in 1971, winning by six lengths from Ortis, the Italian Derby victor. By then, Mill Reef had already established himself as a stupendous middledistance horse, having won the won the Epsom Derby by two lengths, and the Eclipse at Sandown by four lengths.

Ian Balding described him as “the most perfect specimen of a small horse”, and the small horse went on to achieve more than most racehorse trainers could ever dream of. Born on 23 February 1968 at Rokeby Stables in Virginia USA – the stud farm established by his breeder and owner, philanthropist Paul Mellon – it didn’t take long for Mill Reef to make his move into the English racing. It was quickly established that his movement would make him better suited to the turf tracks of the UK rather than the dirt tracks found in the US. As a yearling he moved continents, being transferred into Ian Balding’s Park

House Stables in Kingsclere, Berkshire. Named Mill Reef after the Mill Reef Club in Antigua where Mellon owned a home, Balding knew he had something special on his hands when the compact little 15.2 thoroughbred first came into his care. “When he first saw him gallop it was like watching a ballerina float across the stage”, wrote Ian’s daughter Clare Balding in her autobiography, My Animals and Other Family. “His hooves barely touched the ground before they sprang up into the next stride. He was neat, compact – some might say small – but he was nimble, agile and fast.” He arrived at Kingsclere in December 1969, and quickly made his mark. On his debut in the Salisbury Stakes in May he beat the 2-9 favourite Fireside Chat, ridden by Lestor Piggott, by four lengths. He was partnered by Geoff Lewis, who went on to ride him in every one of his races. After Salisbury

he went to Royal Ascot for the Coventry Stakes, which he won by eight lengths, before a disappointing loss in Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte where he was beaten by a head by My Swallow after a difficult journey to France. He then won the Gimcrack at York by ten lengths in heavy going. After looking at the state of the Knavesmire after a night of rain his trainer had considered pulling him out – but his owner Paul Mellon had faith in the little horse. The decision was the right one. As a two-year old he ran twice more, finishing the season by winning the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. As a three-year-old, Mill Reef returned to the racetrack and seemed set to continue his winning ways, with a win in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury. The next race however wasn’t his best. “Ask my father what happened in 1971,” wrote Clare Balding, “and he’ll tell

you how disappointed he was when Mill Reef was beaten by Brigadier Gerard in the 2,000 Guineas”. He had tough competition; Brigadier Gerard himself has been variously described as ”the best miler in history”, and “one of the greatest horses ever to grace the turf”. My Swallow, who Mill Reef had lost to at Maisons-Laffitte the year before, came in third. The Epsom Derby was his next challenge; Balding nearly missed the race himself as he got stuck in traffic and had to run – in his morning suit – for the last two miles to ensure he was there in time to saddle up his horse. He was well rewarded for his effort; Mill Reef won by two lengths, an achievement made all the more impressive given that his jockey, Geoff Lewis, had been injured in a fall shortly after the 2000 Guineas, and had struggled to get fit enough to be able to ride in the Derby at all. But they did it – and his three year old season went from strength to

strength. Mill Reef won the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, followed of course by his triumph in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes – now sponsored by QIPCO, who we are also able to thank for the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award. In October, Mill Reef went to France. After having experienced a bad journey on his last trip abroad for the Prix Robert Papin, this time Mill Reef travelled on a US Air Force plane – one of the few Thoroughbreds ever to fly with the United States Air Force. He beat Pistol Packer, a French filly, by three lengths, becoming the first British-trained winner of the Arc since 1948. But although Mill Reef went into the winter feeling well, the next season he struggled slightly. After winning a Group 1 in France – the Prix Ganay at Longchamp – he struggled in Epsom’s Coronation Cup, winning by just a neck. He just wasn’t ‘right’ in himself, and was found to be suffering from a virus. With a quiet summer on the cards, it was hoped that Mill Reef would recover and come back better than ever. With the virus beaten, he was being aimed once again at the Arc. “If he could retain it”, wrote Clare Balding “he would be the only Britishtrained horse ever to win back-to-back Arcs.”

Any life, whether it’s that of a person or of an animal, is full of “what if”s. When it comes to Mill Reef, the question will always be: what

would have happened next if a tragic accident hadn’t occurred that morning on the gallops in August 1972? Travelling up the gallop, his rider John Hallum – who had been Mill Reef’s groom since he first touched English soil in December 1969 – heard a crack. Mill Reef had fractured his cannon bone. Even now, fixing a horse’s cannon bone is a challenge. However, it was decided that operating on him would be the best course of action. The operation – which took seven hours and consisted of inserting a plate and three screws into his leg, followed by a cast – was pioneering for its time, and took place in a former chapel at Highclere. He then needed months of box rest and once the cast was off, he had to learn to walk again. But Mill Reef survived, and once recovered, moved to the National Stud in Newmarket, where he began a new career as a stallion. He was a success there, siring two Derby winners: Shirley

Heights and Reference Point. Mill Reef wasn’t just an excellent horse in his own right; he also changed the lives of a number of people – including those of the Balding family. Ian Balding adored him, as did his owner Paul Mellon, and his groom John Hallum. After Mill Reef had moved to Newmarket, Mellon wrote to Balding informing him that he wanted to set up a trust fund for him and his children. Ian Balding decided to use this fund to pay for the education of his two children, Clare and of course Andrew, who now trains from Park House himself. Mill Reef died in 1986 at the National Stud. He will of course be remembered through his progeny, but there are numerous other mementoes of his life. There is a statue of him at the National Stud, where he is buried, as well as a life-size statue at Park House Stables, in the yard Ian Balding named the Mill Reef yard. A bronze statue of Mill Reef stands at the centre of Rokeby Stables where he was born, and the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury carry his name. The Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire is also home to The Mill Reef Pathology Building. His latest award, the QIPCO Diamonds & Pearls Award, is another jewel in the crown of this fabulous horse, who will long be remembered for his skill and courage.

mma has a demanding career in London and one of her favourite weekend pastimes is to visit her horses in Newmarket. “I like to get to Newmarket as early as I can to watch at least one lot on the gallops, but I also enjoy just spending time with them.”

One of her horses has caught the headlines over the past year, Lady Bowthorpe, and she continues to exceed connections initial expectations. This time last year she cruised to victory in the Betfair Valiant Fillies Stakes, an amazing turn of form considering she suﬀered serious injury in her 2 year old year, but that victory was just the start of what has turned out to be an incredible year for Emma and her connections. It was on a trip to the Tattersalls sales 32

There is great history at Theakston Stud in North Yorkshire, for in the 1940s it stood Dante, winner of the Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting in 1944, who then went on to win the Derby in 1945. Owned by the McIntyre family, Andrew McIntyre said the victory of Chipotle (Havana Gold) in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes was the first Royal Ascot win in his lifetime. Frankel, the superstar racehorse, who has got off to an equally speedy start as a sire, notched an opening day double. The Listed Wolferton Stakes was won in good style by Juan Elcano, bred by David and Trish Brown at their Furnace Mill Stud in Worcestershire. The double was brought up when fellow four-year-old, Amtiyaz, was given a fine ride by Hollie Doyle to win the day’s concluding Copper Horse Handicap. He is owned by Imad Al Sagar, who bred the colt in partnership with Saleh Al Homaizi. 40

Juddmonte, who own and stand Frankel at their Banstead Manor Stud, were on the scoresheet in the week – their homebred Sureﬁre scoring in the King George V Handicap. While one of the biggest mile handicaps of the season for three-yearolds fell the way of the China Horse Club-bred Perotto. There was also a handicap win for Quickthorn. The son of Nathaniel, who was bred by owner Lady Blyth’s Lemington Grange Stud in Gloucestershire, captured the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap.

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes

he King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, as Europe’s indisputable midsummer middle-distance showpiece, is one of the most prestigious prizes in racing. The Group 1 contest has been won by some of the sport’s most legendary names and to this day attracts the most elite horses in training to compete for a place among the greats.

The race was founded in 1951, when two existing races were merged to create a premier mile-and-a-half contest for threeyear-olds and upwards. Major John Crocker Bulteel, Ascot’s Clerk of the Course at the time and one of the most forward-thinking racing figures of his day, envisaged the King George as a championship race that would draw considerable international support. Sure enough, from its earliest days it attracted participants of the very highest calibre from across Europe and soon established itself as the principal mid-season weight-for-age test for middledistance horses. It is also significant in giving the Classic generation one of the very first opportunities to take on their elders in what often proves to be a thrilling clash of the generations. Three-year-olds carry 8st 10lb compared to the 9st 7lb allocated to those aged four and above, while fillies and mares receive a 3lb allowance.

The inaugural running attracted a stellar international field, and was won by Supreme Court. The following two years saw that season’s Derby winner triumph, before Her Majesty The Queen’s colt Aureole delivered a famous royal victory in 1954. The undefeated Italian champion and dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Ribot won the 1956 renewal, his one and only start on British turf. Lester Piggott was to enjoy the first three of his seven King George wins in the 1960s, the first coming aboard Irish Derby winner Meadow Court in 1965. However, his winning ride on Nijinsky in 1970 would mark the start of a particularly golden era in the race’s history across the subsequent two decades. The illustrious son of Northern Dancer won the King George at a virtual canter the same season as claiming the Triple Crown, a feat to have eluded every other colt to have attempted it in the fifty years since.

Another outstanding Derby winner landed the spoils just a year later, as Mill Reef swept to victory in 1971 en route to a decisive Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win. The 1975 renewal, often since described as ‘the race of the century’, provided one of the most thrilling race finishes of all time, as Grundy and Bustino locked horns in a titanic battle to the line, smashing the course record in the process. Following a sensational ten-length Derby victory in the hands of 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, which he followed up in the Irish equivalent, Shergar was an emphatic winner in 1981, giving trainer Sir Michael Stoute the first of his record six King George wins. Later that decade came victories from another two greats – the subsequent Arc hero Dancing Brave (1986) and the brilliant Nashwan (1989), the only horse to have won the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, Coral-Eclipse and King George in the same season. Twenty years ago, Montjeu claimed the 50th renewal in devastating style, dismissing his rivals with consummate ease under Mick Kinane. The following year, the same jockey partnered the dual Derby champion Galileo to defeat the high-class five-yearold Fantastic Light. Aidan O’Brien’s first King George winner went on to become the dominant stallion of his era before passing away earlier this year, siring a record number of Group 1 winners including the

incomparable Frankel as well as Highland Reel and Nathaniel who both won the King George. In 2010 Harbinger stunned Ascot with a breathtaking 11-length King George victory, the longest winning margin in the race’s history. He also broke the course record set by Grundy in that epic finish of 35 years previously but it was only another three years before a new record time was posted, when Novellist became the second Germantrained winner in as many years, following Danedream’s success in 2012. Most recently, the John Gosden-trained Enable, made history by winning the race for a third time in 2020. Her victory in 2019 has been billed as a ‘race for the ages’ as she narrowly prevailed in a thrilling duel with the gallant Crystal Ocean in 2019. After victory over Sovereign and Japan last year she now stands as the only horse to have won the race three times. As a six-year-old last year she is also only the second winner aged over five and provided her jockey Frankie Dettori with a seventh victory in the race, equal Lester Piggott’s tally. Whichever of today’s runners adds their name to its illustrious roll of honour, we can look forward to another exceptional renewal of this magnificent race.

“I ﬁrst started out in the industry working for Alan King after enquiring into an advert in Horse & Hound Magazine, it was quite a

shock to the system, as I was used to riding eventing horses, but eventually I adjusted to the style of riding and fell in love with the job, the sport and the industry. I then took on various short-term roles as opportunities arose to gain a broader understanding

of the sport. I took part in the British Horseracing Development Programme which gave me a work placement with Arena Racing Company shadowing the Clerk of the Course at lots of different tracks around the country. My aim was to become an Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer and so when a position became available, I applied straight away. My normal working day depends on whether my daily duty will be based at the Stables or in the Sampling Unit. I usually arrive at the racecourse 3 to 4 hours before the first race. If I am based at the Stables, I will be scanning all of the horse’s microchips as they enter the yard to ensure that the correct horses have

When racing starts, I am based in the Sampling Unit, taking post-race Urine Samples, usually from the winner of each race, but this is decided by the Stewards. Each sample must be witnessed and signed for by the trainer’s representative, usually the Racing Groom leading up on the day. At the end of the day the samples are locked into a freezer bag and sent to the lab for testing. It is important to test horses regularly to safeguard the integrity of the sport.

He showed us horses working on the gallops and then took us to some of the trainers’ yards in Newmarket. We went racing and had the huge excitement of watching Roaring Lion run in the 2000 Guineas. “Having resisted getting involved in racing for many years, when talking to David Redvers I began to think that I would like to get into the sport. We came up with a plan concentrated around mares and ﬁllies - to buy mares and breed from them, and to buy ﬁllies, race them and then breed from them.

She won the Listed Pretty Polly Fillies’ Stakes at Newmarket as soon as racing got going again after the ﬁrst lockdown last June, and then it was all too quick a turnaround for her at Royal Ascot because the calendar had changed so much because of Covid. I bought her out of the syndicate and she is now in-foal to Siyouni. 53

I have also used Zoustar, Roaring Lion and, more recently, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner Kameko on our mares, and I am so excited to see how the foals turn out. “It’s not just about buying a horse and trying to win a race; it’s the passion for the whole picture and the whole journey. It’s like Cornbury House Horse Trials - it’s a long-term venture with big hopes and aspirations born out of a real love for horses.”

David, with the help and back-up of organisers Richard Clapham, Pattie Biden, and course-designer David Evans, course-builder Adrian Ditcham, held his nerve and refused to compromise those principles.

David says: “The only good side of Covid was that David Evans was supposed to be in Japan [he and his team are the Olympic coursebuilders], and he was here all year instead! The course looked amazing.

“It has meant a huge amount of investment,” he admits.

“There was very little we could do over the winter we were washed out, and that was quite an issue,

Currently, Cornbury holds international classes at CCI3*-S and CCI2*-S level which feature the cream of Britain’s young horses - and national classes at novice and intermediate. David says: “We stepped in to host the British Youth Championships international classes for under-21 riders - last year, and they are a major part of Cornbury now. Building the futures of the best young riders and horses is really important to us; it’s the same all-round and long-term approach as with the breeding and racing programme.” David’s daughter Jemima plans to compete at Cornbury this year - both she and her younger sister Kitty are keen event riders, and Jemima has been selected for the under-18 team at the British Eventing International Youth Championships at Bishop Burton, East Yorkshire, with her horse ALS Russian Rolex.

He explains: “My sister Miranda was the horsey one when we were children - I was more into motorbikes. However, my daughters loved riding – Miranda found them their first ponies - and I took up riding when I was 50." David also owns event horses competed by the Dorset-based Australian rider Sam Griffiths. Cornbury House Horse Trials runs from 8-11 September 2021, and David is delighted to be able to open the event to spectators for the first time. His plans for the future include moving the international classes up a level to CCI4*, for which Cornbury, with its acreage and undulating old turf, is immaculately suited. David is a man who never does anything by halves, and it will be thrilling to see where his equine adventures take him.

its champagne. The story begins in 1716, when Claude Moët, an enterprising young merchant, acquired a wine brokerage charge from the Royal Treasury. He was one of the very first wine négociants, or traders, in Champagne — the fabled patch of land in northeastern France stretching along the banks of the river Marne. Within these 33,000 hectares, the chalky soil, harsh winters and often temperamental summers combine to create an exquisite alchemy. The grapes are possessed of a rare lightness and finesse, producing the flavours of a golden summer. Soon after founding the House of Moët & Chandon in 1743, the now mature Claude Moet secured his position as supplier of wines to the royal court of Louis XV. With the blessing of Louis, a patron of the arts and connoisseur of fine living, a new era of progress and celebration dawned in France. The sparkling nectars from Champagne were the perfect pairing for the Age of Enlightenment. Madame de Pompadour, the effervescent mistress of Louis XV, famously declared that ‘Champagne is the only wine that leaves a woman more beautiful after drinking it’. Undoubtedly, the Marquise de Pompadour had Moët in mind. All the eminent ﬁgures of the Enlightenment gathered at her salons; Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot and d’Alembert. Claude’s grandson, Jean-Remy Moet, paved the way for Maison Moët’s prosperous future by moving away from still wines and focusing on an exceptional champagne, such was its appeal to the elite. He acquired some 200 hectares of the most prized vineyards in the area, describing it as his ‘Eldorado’; his city of gold. Today, Moët & Chandon is the largest vineyard owner in Champagne, harvesting the Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Noir grapes, each contributing its own distinct notes, across the 1,180 hectares of its diverse domain. Through the fermentation and assemblage processes, Moët & Chandon ties three essential elements into the taste of its champagnes, namely a bright fruitiness, a seductive palate and an elegant maturity. Some 50 per cent of Moët & Chandon’s lands are the coveted Grands Crus, with another 25 per cent designated Premiers Crus. The ‘cru’ designations were bestowed in the early 20th century, when producers and winegrowers of Champagne settled on a fair pricingsystem for grapes, based on the quality of a village’s vineyards. bseil can lay claim to being the best-bred horse currently registered with RoR. Bred by Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky, his dam, Intercontinental, won a Breeders Cup race and he is closely related to the stallions Champs Elysees and Dansili. He went into training with Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket but an indicator of the injury problems he would face throughout his racing career was that he did not make his racecourse debut until he was a four-year-old. Later that season he was sent oﬀ favourite for the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot where he ﬁnished a respectable 8th of 28. In all, Abseil ran 12 times, winning twice before retiring in 2015.

Abseil then moved on to Cheveral House Racehorse Rehoming in Nottinghamshire, an operation run by Hayley Turner’s mother, Kate. It was there that Tracy Sieminski first laid eyes on Abseil when she was looking for a potential former racehorse to take on and retrain. Under Tracy’s care and enjoying his new life on the Welsh coast in the sleepy village of Trelawynd, Abseil has since embarked on a second career, competing in a variety of disciplines. He has won at dressage, taking part in the BHS finals, then in 2017 Abseil made on his debut at the RoR National Championships at Aintree where he competed in the ridden and in-hand showing classes. And in 2018 he qualified for Eland Lodge Cross Country finals. However, it is as an Endurance horse that Abseil has enjoyed the most success, winning him the prize of RoR Elite Endurance Horse at the 2019 RoR Awards. Covering a distance of 30

miles and next month the pair aim to complete their longest one yet, 40 miles in Clocaenog near Ruthin. “All my friends call me crazy but he’s a bit crazy too, so we make a decent match. If he doesn't know you and you entered his field, he chases you out! You’ve got to find out what they like and all their little quirks and he’s got more quirks than any horse I’ve come across, but I wouldn’t swap him for the world now.” “When out riding at home, he is often ridden in a hackamore and is more than happy to do his duty as a riding school pony and my grandchildren regularly ride him. He prefers to live out as he tends to get restless when kept in the box and he’ll escape if given half a chance. So now, he pretty much stays out 24/7, which suits him well.” When Tracy attended the RoR Awards at the Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket she took the opportunity to visit Sir Michael Stoute’s Freemason Stables, where Abseil had been trained. Head Lass Sarah Deniff recalls what a character Abseil was, adding: “It’s fantastic and so nice you can keep contact with the new owners. I was surprised when Tracy told me about the long distances he covers in his endurance events but it goes to show how versatile they are. It’s amazing how intelligent they are and they will try anything for you.”

t just 15 hands high, the 10-year-old thoroughbred, Our Old Fella, is not an imposing individual. He started life out as a racehorse but just one start at Wolverhampton Racecourse was enough to show that was not going to be his forte, he then tried his hand at polo before switching disciplines again to give eventing a go. And it is as an eventer, in the care of Team GB rider Piggy March, that Our Old Fella has found his niche. Before heading into quarantine ahead of ﬂying to Tokyo for the Olympics, Piggy March took Our Old Fella to Barbury International Horse Trials to compete in the NTF RoR

She said, ‘He’s a 15 hand thoroughbred that has raced and played polo and started light eventing. He’s 10 years old and small. Would I be interested in taking him on?’ “So, I thought she was crazy, but I said yes Jayne because she’s a good owner and she loves her thoroughbreds and supports racing as well. “From the moment I saw him there was just something I really liked about him, he has a super character, he’s a really fun little horse, he just makes you smile when you have anything to do with him. “So, he stayed and we’ve had a lot of fun novice eventing and this NTF RoR class was a lovely aim, a great class to have, something for these guys to aim for and for us to all enjoy the day. “We will try an intermediate with him fairly soon, but we’re in no hurry, we’ll just let him tell us what he likes doing. He’s a real little rubber ball and when he’s calm and relaxes you can really ride him, he’s got loads of scope. I think he goes eventing faster than he went racing - he feels pretty fast to me! “It’s amazing to think he’s done all that he’s done in his career already; to have raced and to have played polo. His soundness, his toughness, his

mindset, his trainability, they are all the qualities you look for in a special horse. “What a fabulous little horse to do so many different things, but that’s what I loved about his character from the off, he was a very intelligent horse, he wanted to be trained, he wanted to learn and to be honest in our job, that’s half the battle. And he’s a lot of fun.” At the end of day one, Our Old Fella and Piggy were leading the class, having not added to their dressage score of 21.30. However, the quarantine restrictions for Team GB Olympic competitors meant the pair could not return to compete in the final round of show jumping. Di Arbuthnot, Chief Executive of RoR said: “On behalf of RoR we wish Piggy and all of Team GB the best of luck in Tokyo. It is great that the likes of her, Tom McEwen and Laura Collett have all worked with thoroughbreds in the past. “Our Old Fella remains an exciting eventing prospect and yet another example of a former racehorse who has found a fulfilling new career thanks to the opportunities created by Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).”

ebastian’s Action Trust is a regional charity that works alongside families of seriously ill and life-limited children, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. They provide whole-family respite breaks and day visits at their two respite homes, The Woodlands in Crowthorne Berkshire and The Bluebells in Hampshire. hen the sad news of his passing was announced on Sunday 11th July 2021, these photos resurfaced on social media with increased significance, as evidence of an experience now impossible. The photo commentaries carried a shared vocabulary of legacy, influence, and greatness. They spoke of Galileo, an immense racehorse and breed-shaping stallion who lit up the 2001 season on the track and went on to extend the boundaries of the possible as a sire. On the 20th anniversary of Galileo’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory we reflect on this iconic success and look at his enduring impact on the

King George (and the entire thoroughbred breed) through his redoubtable progeny. Galileo was born in Ireland on 30th March 1998, the son of Sadler’s Wells and Urban Sea. Breeding aficionados will know that this places him in one of the finest racing families of all time, with half-brother Sea The Stars just one of a host of distinguished relations. Yet even the finest of origins can guarantee neither the ability nor good fortune required to make it among racing’s ultra-competitive elite. Those with a belief in nominative determinism might claim that his success was written in the stars, though expert handling by owners Coolmore, trainer Aidan O’Brien, and jockey

“Galileo is one hell of a horse. He's the best Derby horse I've ever ridden, the best threeyear-old at that trip.” He again proved himself the best three-year-old in the Irish Derby at the Curragh, before being set the daunting task of competing against both the cream of his own generation and some formidable elders in the King George.

Mick Kinane may have had more to do with it. Galileo had shown considerable raw talent when taking his sole juvenile start by 14 lengths in a late-season Curragh maiden on 28th October 2000. This talent was emphatically conﬁrmed at the beginning of his threeyear-old season as he scored Listed and Group Three wins at Leopardstown. Next came the Derby, which he claimed with seeming ease by three and a half lengths. After his Derby win Mick Kinane said,

Galileo’s chief adversary at Ascot was Godolphin’s Fantastic Light, a battlehardened five-year-old who already had four toplevel wins in four different countries to his name at this stage. The race did not disappoint. When Galileo took up the running just off the home turn Fantastic Light loomed menacingly and came upsides, but the younger horse faced down the challenge and went on to score by two lengths under the ever-cool Kinane. “To show that kind of courage and the way he went on the ground makes him exceptional. He has so much speed that Michael was able to take all the gaps he wanted,” said Aidan O’Brien after the race. Fortunes were reversed with Fantastic Light in another epic battle in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown next time and a run on dirt in the Breeders’ Cup Classic also proved unsuccessful, but Galileo had already more than proven his quality and was retired to Coolmore Stud. One wonders whether Coolmore supremo John Magnier and co had any inkling that the best was still very much to come. At stud Galileo has simply

been without equal. His total of individual Group / Grade One winners now stands at 92, making him the leading top-level sire of all time. Among these Group One scorers are Nathaniel and Highland Reel, who themselves took the King George in 2011 and 2016 respectively. His potency is again underlined in the fact that no fewer than 20 of his sons (including Nathaniel who now stands at Newsells Park Stud) have themselves sired Group One winners on the flat, including the likes of Frankel and Australia. 12-times Champion Sire in Britain and Ireland, Galileo’s predominance is only surpassed by his own progenitor Sadler’s Wells who was champion on 14 occasions. Galileo has sired a record five Derby winners and in 2020 he was champion broodmare sire in Britain and Ireland for the first time. Galileo was not just the horse of a lifetime, he is a horse that will echo through the ages. At his passing, John Magnier said that, “The effect he is having on the breed through his sons and daughters will be a lasting legacy.” This is borne out in the field for this year’s King George as he is sire or grandsire of six of this year’s nine runners. His progeny Love, Lone Eagle, Japan and Mogul are all set to take their chance, while he also is grandsire of prominent contenders Adayar and Broome. Whatever the result on Saturday it can be assured that Galileo’s King George connection will continue for many generations to come. 73
