CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday. Our opening Jumps meeting of the 2021/22 season is always an exciting time of year as the winter code begins to get underway in earnest. We saw some thrilling Jumps action at Ascot last season and we are delighted to have racegoers back to witness it all this time around. One of our winter highlights is the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle which could see Paisley Park, who reappears this afternoon at Wetherby, bidding to join the likes of Reve De Sivola, Big Buck’s and Baracouda as a three times winner of our Christmas highlight. Today, the Grade 3 Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Steeple Chase is the feature race on the card and it is worth £100,00 this year. It was won last year by the seemingly ageless Regal Encore, who became the first 12-year-old to win the race since its inception in 2006. His overall record from 12 starts at Ascot is now four victories and five top-three finishes and he bids to improve that further still when lining up again this afternoon. We also have Listed handicap hurdle and chase action with the Bateaux London Handicap Hurdle over two miles and the Byrne Group Handicap Steeple Chase over an extended two miles. Both those races have a tendency to provide strong form which will be worth following throughout the season. Our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors including Ascot Underwriting, Bateaux London, Byrne Group and Stella Artois. We are delighted to dedicate our final race today to our local Ascot Round Table charity. They are integral to staging today’s Family Raceday, which offers an array of fairground rides and other activities for children of all ages as well as one of the region’s largest fireworks displays after racing. Within this racecard, you will find a feature on leading jockey, Harry Skelton whilst Olympic medallist, Laura Collett, is our “Ascot Meets” personality. She provides some fascinating insights into how she uses her eventing expertise to improve the jumping of racehorses. We hope you enjoy the day and look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot in the near future.

PAGES 52-54

1st Race 1.35pm The Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

5th Race 3.55pm The Stella Artois Novices’ Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make these handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 28-30

2nd Race 2.10pm The Bateaux London Handicap Hurdle Race (Listed Race) (GBB Race)

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level and many of the four-year-olds and upwards in this two miles hurdle race will be using this race as a springboard to possibly even better things. Despite its Listed status, it is still a handicap meaning that the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official rating. PAGES 36-38

3rd Race 2.45pm The Byrne Group Handicap Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race)

Just like the previous race, this is also a Listed contest. However, this specific race is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards over two miles and one furlong. In this instance the race is restricted to horses officially rated from 0 to 150 and any horse to have won a steeple chase after October 23rd 2021 will recieve a 6lb penalty. PAGES 44-46

4th Race 3.20pm The Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race)

This Grade 3 contest is a three-mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races.

CONTENTS

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular two-mile novices’ hurdle is for horses aged four and upwards. PAGES 58-60

6th Race 4.30pm The Ascot Racecourse Supports Safer Gambling Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

This handicap hurdle for novice three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 is run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 66-68

7th Race 5.05pm The Ascot Round Table Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred to, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six, and will be run over two miles.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY HARRY SKELTON Harry Skelton dreamt of becoming Champion Jockey one day and his dreams came true in the 2020/21 season after riding 151 winners. Along with his wife Bridget, brother Dan and his father Nick, Harry is invaluable to the success of Team Skelton. Initially thinking he would follow his father into the world of showjumping it wasn’t until he rode a racehorse at the at of 15 that he ignited his passion for racing and his career path was set. 1. What is your favourite Ascot memory so far? My favourite Ascot memory would have to be winning on Willow’s Saviour in the Ladbroke Hurdle. It was our first year training and that was my first big success. 2. Did you always want to be a jockey? Yeah, to be honest I’m not much good at a lot else! 3. Did you grow up riding ponies? Yes, my first pony was my dad’s (Nick Skelton) first pony and my brother’s (Dan Skelton) first pony – Oxo. He died when he was in his late thirties, early forties – he was a pony that will always be remembered in the family. 4. Who is your racing hero? My racing hero is definitely AP McCoy. 5. What is the best piece of advice ever given to you? When you get up, wake up. 6. Who is the one horse from racing history you would have loved to ride? One horse from history that I would have liked to have ridden is Kauto Star. 7. If you were not a jockey, which job would you be doing? I did a lot of show jumping as a kid, and obviously with dad having that background I wasn’t sure whether it was show jumping or racing (I wanted to pursue), but as soon as I sat on a racehorse – from about 15, I knew it was going to be racing. I haven’t looked back since! 8. What advice would you give to a young person who would like to follow in your footsteps and become a jockey? Work hard and keep your mouth closed! 9. Who are five famous people (dead or alive) you would invite to a box at Ascot to enjoy a day’s racing? Sir Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola, Lester Piggott, Aidan O’Brien and Cristiano Ronaldo. 2021-22 JUMPS SEASON PREVIEW: JUMPING RETURNS AT ASCOT

FIRST FLOW WAS A DEVASTATING WINNER 0F THE GRADE 1 CLARENCE HOUSE CHASE

As the clocks go back and the weather turns distinctly autumnal, thoughts at Ascot begin to turn towards the Jumps season with some thrilling action in store across the eight fixtures during the winter months. The Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday on 30th October starts things off with a bang and the £100,000 Sodexo Gold Cup is the highlight. This valuable race is a popular early season target for staying chasers who might have the Grand National in their sights as a long-term plan. The November Racing Weekend on 19th and 20th November kicks things up a notch, headlined by a brace of Grade 2 contests over mid-range trips – the 1965 Chase for chasers and the Coral Hurdle over the smaller obstacles. Both races have a rich history of attracting some of the biggest names in the sport, none more so than the 1965 Chase which saw that epic duel between Altior and Cyrname in 2019. It’s an ideal race over the mid-range trip for those potentially heading to the King George at Kempton so it might attract the likes of Chantry House this year, so impressive at both Cheltenham and Aintree in the spring. Festive cheer at Ascot comes in the shape of the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle which headlines the Howden Christmas Weekend running across 17th and 18th December. Last year’s renewal provided one of the races of the season as Paisley Park defeated Thyme Hill in thrilling style. Both of those remain leading lights in the staying hurdle division and Paisley Park could bid to join the likes of Baracouda and Big Buck’s as a three-time winner of the race. After Christmas the focus turns to two high-class days in January and February. The Grade 1 Clarence House Chase is the feature on 22nd January where the best

18

2021-22 JUMPS SEASON PREVIEW

two-mile chasers routinely arrive at Ascot to do battle. This year Shishkin is expected to be the leading-light in the division having cantered to victory in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival. His trainer Nicky Henderson will be hoping he can fill the void left by stable-star Altior who won the Clarence House in 2019. Greaneteen, Nube Negra, Allmankind, Sky Pirate and last year’s winner First Flow should all be extremely competitive over CHANTRY HOUSE WINNING ON HIS CHASING DEBUT this trip though while the Irish challenge is led by Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi for Willie Mullins who won the race three times with Un De Sceaux. The highlight on 19th February is the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase over the intermediate trip of two-and-a-half-miles. It could be an ideal target for the aforementioned Chantry House while Henderson also has Fusil Raffles as a promising second-season chaser. Dan Skelton’s Protektorat won a Grade 1 novice chase at the Grand National meeting and might be another to be aimed at this prestigious race. Dashel Drasher won the race last year on an emotional day for Jeremy Scott and Matt Griffiths and you would expect him to attempt to defend his crown along with the 2019 winner Cyrname for champion trainer Paul Nicholls. Concluding the Jumps season at Ascot is the Spring Family Raceday on 27th March where lots of fun, engaging activities will be on offer for all ages around the racecourse combined with competitive action on the track to bring the curtain down on the season. ASCOT SUPPORTS – WHERE ARE THEY NOW Hannah Bishop would never have imagined the adventures that herself and Annacotty would have together, 9 years on from Hannah attending the sales to choose and purchase a horse for Liz Prowting to race. In training with Alan King, Annacotty went on to win 5 of his 22 starts and whilst he may never have frequented the winners’ enclosure at Ascot he put up a couple of valiant performances against the likes of Regal Encore. “I have worked for Annacotty’s owner Liz Prowting for the last 15 years. He was the first horse I was allowed to go and choose for her at the sales back in ror.org.uk 2012, so I have looked after and known the horse all his racing life. It’s been a special journey and he is without a doubt my horse of a lifetime. I consider myself very lucky to be allowed to ride and compete him now in his life after racing.” With an active and intelligent brain Annacotty gets bored very easily and so has thrived during his retraining with Hannah having to be mindful that they didn’t go faster than his body would allow. “Annacotty prefers human company to other horses. He is happiest when he is the only horse in the yard” shares Hannah. “He loves to rush off as soon as he’s let out in the field for a roll. He has special rolling patches that he digs around his field. He also doesn’t enjoy having too much time left out

at grass, and hates being out overnight, which was something that took me by surprise.” Hannah has been struck by the versatility Annacotty has shown. “I have taken part in the RoR show classes with some success, and learnt to ride side saddle on him, but mostly we love to show jump. Never did I imagine he could be as careful and clever as he is over coloured poles having been a 3 mile chaser - he is a huge amount of fun to take out jumping. Winning at this year’s Hickstead championship jumping show is something I’m extremely proud of. Competing amongst pros and in large classes, it really hit home that he is more show jumper than racehorse these days.” Annacotty is not the first RoR Hannah has retrained but he seems to have captured her heart. “I have been lucky enough to retrain quite a few of Liz’s retired racehorses before Annacotty, but he’s the first one I’ve been allowed to keep at home to compete myself - usually I get them going and place them with other riders.” Whilst Annacotty would rather the company of humans then horses he does have one equine friend that he plays with daily, Button’s the Shetland. “Annacotty is a shining example of how committed Liz is to all her racehorses” says Hannah. They all have a home for life here, all are given the opportunity for a life after racing doing what they show us they like doing best. Some hunt, some event and some do showing whilst others just get ridden for fun. They all come back to us here at home when they can no longer be ridden. Something I’m proud to be a part of.” It is clear to see why Hannah has dedicated her working life to care for this wonderful breed. “Thoroughbred racehorses are so powerful and strong, yet gentle and kind, it would be impossible not to love them. I liken it to driving a high speed performance car - they are the best.”

Jo Stone, Travelling Head Groom for Michael Blake Racing, is one of our Careersinracing content creators. In her spare time, Jo enjoys talking to people about their careers and how they got into racing. She recently spent some time with Phil Perryman who is a Farrier. This is one of the most vital jobs in racing. You can find out more about him and his job below. Please tell us who you are and what your job title is? My name is Philip Perryman and I am a Farrier. My full title is AWCF BSC Hons Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. How long have you been in the job? A very long time, since 1978! What made you want to be a Farrier? I’ve always had horses and from a young age I knew I wanted to be a farrier, it was just something I wanted to do. How did you get into the industry? As soon as I was old enough, I completed a 4 year apprenticeship working with an approved Farrier. I then had to sit the recognised exam at the end of it and that’s what got me started in my career. There are only a few colleges in the UK that offer Farriery apprenticeships, Warwickshire College being one of them. What’s the best part of your job? There are many different parts of my job that make me happy. I enjoy working outdoors and being my own boss with my own business. If I had to pick a certain part, it would be working on horses that have “problem” feet and getting it right and comfortable. How many horses do you work on in a week? About 25, some weeks slightly more, especially if there are several horses at the same yard I could spend the whole day there. I try and keep all the racehorses booked in together, so I don’t have to drive to far between yards. What’s been a career highlight for you? I worked at he Olympics and shoed Mark Todd’s horse - that was pretty special. What’s your favourite racehorse you’ve worked on? That has to be a horse called Freedom and Wheat, he is such a superstar on and off the track, he is a pleasure to work on. How do you deal with high pressure situations? When working with horses, it can be high pressure and potentially dangerous situations can occur at any moment. To avoid them and to have a relaxed atmosphere, I always try to be quiet, relaxed and calm around the horses, with a cool head about me. When a situation does arise, I’m always alert and ready for it and again staying calm is key. What advice would you give someone looking to do this job? Gain hands on work experience whenever you can, not just with a farrier but at yards learning how to handle and deal with the horses. This will help when applying for an apprenticeship! ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS FRIMLEY & CAMBERLEY CADET CORPS Today we welcome the Frimley & Camberley Cadet Corps (F&CCC) who are our official bucket collectors. Founded originally as a Bible Class in 1903 and a Cadet Corps in 1908, the Corps are now a community organisation that teaches children and young adults military-style subjects and discipline. Assisted on Sundays by “Gentlemen Officer Cadets” from Sandhurst Military Academy, the Corps are now in their 118th year. The Corps have been a fully financially autonomous organisation for over 110 years accepting girls and boys between the ages of 7-18 yrs. The Corps are divided into four Companies and meet in a military environment in which to develop children’s morale, mental and physical state as well as improving self-confidence whilst having fun. Their philosophy has always been, as quoted by Field Marshall Lord Roberts, one of their original Trustees: We turn the Cadets into young adults with moral strength, good manners, self-control, self-respect and hence a good happy successful citizen in whatever life they choose. Cadets enjoy and respect being in uniform and are trained properly to carry out shooting, map reading, first aid, tactical drills, parades (locally & nationally), camping (tents & buildings), long distance walking, trips to the continent, 3 2 A S C OT R AC E C O U R S E S U P P O RT S

riding in helicopters and army vehicles, and even joining if they choose, their own Corps of Drums. The Corps is a registered charity and relies solely on subscriptions and thus is always looking to increase its Cadet membership. If you have children from the age of 6 1/2 upwards, they are most welcome to visit the Corps and experience what it does for a four week trial period before committing to join. ASCOT MEETS: LAURA COLLETT From the Tokyo Olympics to winning her first 5* event last October at Pau in France, Laura Collett has had 12 months to remember but, between her busy schedule of eventing there is another job that Laura relishes, that of schooling National Hunt horses to improve their jumping. Ascot finds out a little more about this young lady who has overcome many hurdles to achieve the success she has gained, the racehorse she would like to have a spin on and how she combines her event training with teaching racehorses how to improve their jumping. How did your connection with racing begin? I used to ride out racehorses for Mary Hambro in return for helping pay rent on the yard when I was 16 years old, ever since then I’ve been a big fan. I started jump schooling racehorses through Yogi Breisner about 10 years ago How do you apply your eventing skills to teaching a racehorse to jump? A big part of Eventing is understanding each horse as an individual which helps with the racehorses too. We have a lot of different ideas on how to help horses improve their technique which can be translated to the racehorses. Do you think schooling racehorses has benefited your xc riding? It definitely has improved my reactions and taught me to leave them to it and stay in a balance! Do you have a favourite racehorse you have helped so far? Definitely has to be Simply the Betts … I loved jumping him, we had such fun and I got such a buzz cheering him up the Cheltenham hill to win at the festival!

40 A SCOT M E E T S

Would you ever be tempted to ride in a race? I’ve always wanted to but never got round to it. Have you had any racehorses in to school that you would like to steal to event? Not really … I don’t usually have the good jumpers in so wouldn’t fancy jumping solid fences on the ones I get. Simply the Betts would be the only one that had a very good jump. Are there any jump jockeys out there that you think would make good event riders? I’m sure there’s plenty … I think Nico De Boinville is one of the best at being accurate to a fence. Yogi Breisner has been a big influence in your career - what makes him so good? We have always just understood each other, he doesn’t try to over complicate things. He’s a master at reading horses and figuring them out. Is there a top jumps horse you would like to have a sit on that you haven’t already? Frodon looks like he’s the best jumper so would love a spin on him. You will be heading out on cross country at Pau as our first jumps meet of the season gets under way - tell us a bit about your ride and your hopes for this week? Dacapo is tackling his first 5* which is exciting … he’s been in great form and comes here off the back of 2nd at Aachen 4*S so fingers crossed for a good run.

ASCOT PERFORMANCES LEAD TO BIG WINS FOR BREEDERS

© Nigel Kirby

Each year the TBA celebrates the best of British bloodstock at its NH Breeders’ Awards Evening, sponsored by Goffs UK. Amongst the winners at the ceremony in August were Jeremy and Camilla Scott, trainer and breeder of Dashel Drasher, who made Ascot his own last winter. The Exmoor-based husband and wife team took home the Batsford Stud-sponsored Leading Chaser trophy. “He is the sixth generation of breeding,” said Camilla on the evening. “My stepfather bought the original mare [Cash Award] and the family had lost their way a little until So Long came along.” So Long did not have it easy. Having suffered an injury when fancied in a novice hurdle at Exeter, she proved how tough she was, coming back to win five point-to-points in a row. This tenacity is evident in Dashel Drasher. Three times he raced at Ascot last year and was victorious each time, and on all three occasions had to show plenty of heart in the finish. A point and shoot run style makes any horse vulnerable. However, the son of Passing Glance kept on finding more when challenged up the home straight. His teak tough nature perfectly distilled into the closing stages of his win in the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase in February. Another winner on the evening with strong links to Ascot is Henry Cole, who was suitably surprised to win in the Queen Mother’s Silver Salver, the highest accolade that the TBA presents to the National Hunt community. When asked for his most pleasing moment, Cole nominated Dubacilla’s half-length defeat of Rough Quest in the Ascot-staged 1994 Comet Handicap Chase as his proudest moment, saying: “Giving him 18lb was a great day - she beat a future Grand National winner giving away that much weight.” That day she was trained by Cole, her breeder, owner and trainer. In her final season of racing, she was handled by the late David Nicholson. Runner-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and fourth in the Grand National, that season she filled the runner-up spot in the 4 8 T H O R O U G H B R E D B R E E D E R S ’ A S S O C I AT I O N

Betterware Cup. Now known as the Listed Silver Cup Handicap Chase, last season it was won by her grandson Mister Malarky. Superstar mare Honeysuckle’s performances over the course of last season, which included victories in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham and in the Irish equivalent at Leopardstown, rewarded her breeder Dr Geoffrey Guy (Glanvilles Stud) with both the Highflyer Bloodstock Trophy (Leading Hurdler) and Mickley Stud Trophy (Leading Hurdling Mare). Another dual winner on the evening was Overbury Stud. Simon Sweeting was on hand to receive the Dudgeon Cup (NH Broodmare of the Year) which was awarded to Rosita Bay, dam of Thyme Hill, who was headed near the line when attempting to win the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot last season. Sweeting also picked up the Horse & Hound Cup for the achievements of Schiaparelli. The award is presented to the leading active British-based stallion based upon individual chase winners over the NH season. Richard and Lizzie Kelvin-Hughes received the Shade Oak Stud Trophy (Leading Novice Hurdler) for My Drogo, whose wins included the Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle at Ascot last December. The leading chasing mare award (Peel Bloodstock Trophy) went to Richard and Sally Aston, breeders of two-time Listed winner Chilli Filli, while the leading novice chaser award (Midnight Legend Trophy) was won by Cedric Brookes, breeder of Sky Pirate, winner of the Grand Annual Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. A half-sister to Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John, Anythingforlove, bred by Dr Bryan Mayoh, upheld family honour with a Grade 2 win at Sandown last February and she was crowned leading novice hurdling mare (Overbury Stud Trophy). Robert Robinson’s Distillery Stud sponsored the award for the leading NHF horse and it was awarded to John and Alice Dawson, breeders of I Like To Move It. The mare’s equivalent, which was sponsored by Yorton Stud, was awarded to Rita Vaughan, breeder of Elle Est Belle, a Listed winner at Cheltenham last November, who went on to finish third in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. Kept a secret until the evening, the Eric Gillie Special Award was presented to Fiona Evans, breeder of fan favourite Seeyouatmidnight. Nathaniel, sire of Enable, was crowned the leading active British-based stallion by earnings during the 2019-20 season. Julian Dollar was on hand to receive the Whitbread Silver Salver from sponsor Warwick Beswick. JUMP INTO THE AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON AT ASCOT RACECOURSE Hetty Lintell, Luxury Editor at Country Life, gives us her advice on how to have a stylishly successful day at the races. I’ll let you in on a secret: I often prefer winter racedays to those in summer. There, I’ve said it. Summer means pretty dresses and fancy hats, of course, but when dressing for winter meetings, you can always invest in some classic pieces to wear again and again—probably for a lifetime if you get it right. The key to dressing for the Jumps Season is comfort. If you are comfortable, then you will have more fun because you feel better—this goes for every event you might attend, for gentlemen and ladies alike. The general vibe of Jumps racing is different, and certainly more relaxed, and although there is no strict Dress Code for the Queen Anne Enclosure and some minor guidance for the King Edward VII Enclosure, there are a few simple rules which will help when it comes to deciding what to wear. Layering is essential. You can always remove things if you’re too warm, but racecourses can be notoriously windy, and I’ve seen many lips turn blue on winter days when their owners are unprepared. Always opt for a classic look, certainly nothing too ostentatious, if you want to fit in with the regulars and industry types. Ladies Comfort and style can be a hard balance to achieve, and I strongly recommend that you steer away from the occasion-wear look and opt for something a little more practical. This is a day to be enjoyed, not grimaced through, and if you make a few sensible choices—much of which you might have in your wardrobe already—you’ll be onto a winner in the style stakes, if nothing else. Stilettos or very high-heeled shoes? Avoid them if you’re planning to explore the lawns or watch the racing from the railings. A chunkier heel is going to mean you can be on your feet comfortably all day, and, trust me, it can be a long day. Flat boots are totally acceptable and, with a smart enough outfit, can look really very chic. I have fallen for Valentino’s Chelsea boots, which have a bit of an edge, or try some black suede beauties from Royal Ascot Womenswear Licensee LKBennett for a classic look. A small block heel might make you feel more dressed for the occasion, and these knee high boots from Fairfax & Favor are a safe option, working beautifully with wool and tweed outfits in earthier tones. If the weather forecast is looking Baltic, I wear tights underneath smart trousers, but, if possible, I aim for a smart skirt and lightweight jumper, with a warm layer underneath and an overcoat. I think skirts work particularly well with longer boots, and this will lend some welcome warmth. Really Wild stock some beautiful skirts, and I love their tweed jackets, too. Their belted jacket is a great androgynous look which, topped with an overcoat, a hat and perhaps a faux-fur stole, would be fabulous. If you love the idea of a suit, The Deck is a bespoke Savile Row tailor specifically for women, and their suits have graced some very chic TV presenters on racedays. I love their deep green velvet option, which, when layered over some fine knitwear, looks spot on.

5 6 J U M P I N TO FA S H I O N

I always, always wear a hat, mainly to keep my hair under control, but also for obvious warmth. I have a gorgeous felt fedora from Camilla Rose which I am endlessly complimented on—Camilla gave me the tip of steaming the ribbon with a kettle to keep it smart. Hicks and Brown make excellent and affordable headgear for women, with designs in a variety of coloured felts, many with pretty feather trims which add that special touch for the Jumps season. I was given an excellent tip by a dressmaker a few years ago, for how to deal with long days on your feet. Spray them with Deep Freeze before you put your shoes on, which takes away some of the pressure from your shoes. I now carry some in my handbag at all events so that I can enjoy every moment in comfort. Gentlemen Chaps are lucky in that their footwear is (pretty much) always flat. Trainers are a no-no, of course, and I would suggest a decent pair of lace-up Oxfords from Crockett & Jones which will see you through life if looked after (Crockett & Jones will take them back and revamp them for you). If this look seems too formal, you could get away with smart, suede Chelsea boots or loafers (be sure to wear these in—blisters will certainly defeat the object), and Fairfax and Favor make some very comfortable examples which you’ll wear long beyond the racecourse. I’m never a huge fan of Wellington boots at the races, so, if the weather is set to be dire, take a huge umbrella which can double as a walking stick when you’re tired at the end of the day (and don’t wear those suede shoes). Layering up starts with a decent shirt. If you want the best, head to Emma Willis on Jermyn Street, whose brushed cotton is exquisite. Or, for affordable quality, The Oxford Shirt Company makes a decent country, check shirt in jolly colours to add a bit of flair. Knitwear should be fine so that you can wear it over a shirt and under a jacket or coat, depending on the temperature. I recently discovered Tom Lane, whose jumpers look just the ticket, and in elegantly muted colours, too. I implore you to wear a tie. It’s not a rule in all enclosures, but it certainly makes for a better general ambiance if everyone does, and you’ll feel so dapper. Favourbrook is known for their exciting summer season designs and patterns, and they have been the Official Menswear Licensee for the Royal Enclosure since 2020 so know exactly how to get things right, including exquisite ties. Their latest collection takes traditional silhouettes and reimagines them for a sophisticated modern wardrobe. From a velvet cotton artist jacket in navy and a racing green Penton cord suit to tartan wool trousers and spotted woollen scarves. Tweed will always have a place in a gentleman’s wardrobe, and now it can come into its own. Head to Oliver Brown in Chelsea SW3 where they can advise you top to toe. As the Official Top Hat of Royal Ascot, they definitely know their stuff. Here you can have something made bespoke or purchase ready-to-wear separates that will be top quality and hard-wearing, like their Eaton jacket. You can pick up a covert coat too, which is practical and warm for racedays. For a jacket with character, try country experts Cordings on Piccadilly, whose Nevis double-breasted alpaca coat will keep you warm, with a big slug of attitude thrown in. For the Queen Anne Enclosure, something slightly more casual could be worn, like a smart Barbour or field coat. Accessories wise, the felt fedora hat is a practical and modish choice— Tom Parker Bowles wears it well. Christys’ London make fine felt fedoras, and have been an Official Licensee of Ascot and Royal Ascot for several years now, while Lock & Co also excel on the quality front with their beautifully crafted gent’s winter hats. I recently came across Joshua Ellis, whose beautiful cashmere scarves come in a myriad of tones, sizes and styles, and layered over the lapels of a coat would look just the part. Who knows, if you dress the part, those winnings might come flooding in. J U M P I N T O FA S H I O N 5 7

ASCOT ROUND TABLE We are pleased to welcome the Ascot branch of the Round Table who are the organiser of tonight’s fireworks display by Star Fireworks. Ascot Racecourse has collaborated with Ascot Round Table (ART) on this event since 1985 and over the years £800,000 has been raised which ART have then distributed to local charities; supporting many people in need. ART are one of the strongest Round Table clubs in the country and also raise monies via their annual golf day held at The Berkshire Golf Club and their “Santa” collection which see team members travel on a slay across Sunninghill, Bracknell and Ascot to collect gifts and monetary donations. Round Table is a truly international organisation with over 30,000 members in 60 different countries. Together they all stand for fun and friendship, service in their communities, and unique and everlasting friendships that have no borders. The Round Table are just one of a family of organisations, giving back to communities. The Ladies Circle is open to women aged 18-45 and is Round Table’s sister organisation, sharing the same core values of friends, having fun, and supporting local causes. After being an active participant in the Round Table, members are also able to join the 41 Club which offer options for past members of the Round Table or Ladies Circle who have left their respective clubs at 45 years to continue to meet regularly and continue their friendships but be less “active”. In honour of their sterling work and our partnership, we have named our 5.05pm race “The Ascot Round Table Open National Hunt Flat Race”. We welcome James Thorogood on behalf of ART who will be presenting trophies to winning connections. The ART are actively seeking members and are appealing for gentlemen aged between 18-45yrs from the Ascot area to join their team. They meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday for either social activities or for charitable activity planning. To find out more email: Ascot@roundtable.org.uk, or visit Facebook @ascotRT.
