AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL 2020 Saturday 19th September

RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE, ENGINEERING & TRAINING SPECIALISTS

WELCOME FROM QTS

Hello and welcome to the QTS Ayr Gold Cup! We are living in an unfamiliar time, and this has been a Gold Cup Festival like no other. However, it is with great pleasure that QTS take the lead sponsorship for the 2020 Gold Cup, further cementing our partnership with Ayr Racecourse. It’s also really positive to see so many local businesses supporting the Racecourse, and the sport, during this time. QTS has a strong reputation in the sports sponsorship arena and over the years, we’ve partnered with some terrific brands, including Kilmarnock FC and Derby County. We also have a strong team of young, up and coming sports stars that we support via our youth athlete programme. We sponsored our first race here back in 2012 and it is a great feeling to now have our name associated with a flat race as iconic as the Gold Cup. Today is a very proud day for me and all of my team at QTS. I hope you enjoy a day of racing and while there is no formal entertainment like in other years, it’s great to be back at Ayr Racecourse to celebrate the QTS Ayr Gold Cup! Best wishes Alan McLeish Managing Director, QTS Group

WELCOME TO AYR

I would normally begin this page with the words ‘Welcome to QTS Ayr Gold Cup Saturday’ but as we all know this year is far from the norm. Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck it would have been unthinkable to stage Scotland’s biggest and best day of Flat racing behind closed doors with just some trainers, jockeys, stable staff, racecourse staff and a limited number of owners present. We have to comply with guidelines and restrictions that are in place in the interests of public health and safety and hopefully we will come through this testing time and be in a position to welcome racegoers back in numbers in the not too distant future. Today more than ever we are indebted to our sponsors and I’d like to thank each and everyone of them without whose support this afternoon’s star studded card would have been even harder to stage. The QTS Group are long standing sponsors at Ayr Racecourse and I am delighted that Managing Director Alan McLeish chose to back Scotland’s biggest Flat race the QTS Ayr Gold Cup, the QTS Ayr Silver Cup and earlier in the week the QTS Ayr Bronze Cup and the QTS Handicap. The company’s famous orange and black colours have become synonymous with not only what’s best in business but also sport in recent years with their generous support of outstanding young sportsmen and women, football teams and also events like today’s iconic QTS Ayr Gold Cup Saturday. Thank you Alan and I hope you will continue to be associated with Ayr Racecourse for many years to come. The Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup this afternoon is sponsored by another company who have supported our major Festivals for many years – Jordan Electrics - while Scotland’s only Group race carries the name of another long standing sponsor – The Scotty Brand Firth Of Clyde Stakes. The Microtech Group have also been associated with the racecourse for many years and sponsor this afternoon’s opening race the Microtech Group EBF Nursery Handicap. Brandinghub Signs & Prints are another successful local company and give their backing today to the Brandinghub Signs & Print Handicap while the meeting ends with the Download The Gribbens Taxi App Now Handicap and Gribbens Taxis are a well known taxi firm who operate throughout Ayrshire and beyond. A huge thank you to them all. I should also like to thank the very many owners who continue to invest and support racing during these challenging times. Without owners there is no horse racing and we have always recognised that in the hospitality that we have provided. Owning horses is an expensive affair and we all look forward to the future when we can once again return to some sort of normality. I must also thank Shadwell Stud, the EBF and Ayrshire Cancer Support for their sponsorship earlier in the week. Finally to our many staff who make this possible I should simply wish to say thank you.

Ayr Racecourse has held the ROA Gold Standard award for a Large Racecourse for five consecutive years.

David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

David is a former jumps jockey who has become one of the leading Flat trainers in the country over the last few years. He is enjoying yet another fine season and has a fair amount of runners this afternoon. He runs the talented Lord Glitters in the Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup and has several horses lining up in the QTS Ayr Gold Cup. He will be hoping to lift at least one of our big prizes today.

This highly talented young jockey rode his first Classic winner at Doncaster a week ago today on Galileo Chrome for trainer Joseph O’Brien. He will be hoping for another super Saturday and he certainly has the ammunition throughout the afternoon including Nahaarr in the QTS Ayr Gold Cup and Mick Channon’s Ilykato in the Scotty Brand Firth Of Clyde Stakes Group 3 contest.

Richard is a man synonymous with Ayr Gold Cup Saturday and saddled Fonthill Road to win the great race back in 2006 and has a few near misses too. He has two runners in today’s race including Mr Lupton who won a valuable sprint at The Curragh only six days ago. He also has a very interesting runner in Scotland’s only Group race the Scotty Brand Firth Of Clyde Stakes when he saddles Umm Kulthum with Paul Hanagan riding.

On this day back in 2013 Oisin burst onto the scene in a big way riding Highland Colori to win the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup and then winning the last three races too. Since then he has been crowned champion jockey in 2019 and is well on his way to winning the championship again this season. He has a very strong book of rides today including Recovery Run in the Microtech Group EBF Nursery Handicap, Fox Chairman in the Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup and Stone Of Destiny in the QTS Gold Cup.

William is without doubt one of the finest trainers of his generation and the winners keep rolling in for his yard. Today he has several runners and these include Addeybb in the Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup and the fouryear-old Nahaarr in the QTS Ayr Gold Cup. This is a trainer who rarely leaves a major meeting without a winner and he should be on the scoresheet this afternoon.

Paul is a two time champion jockey and multiple Group race winning rider who has a great affinity with Ayr. He was on board Fonthill Road when that horse won the Ayr Gold Cup and he will be hoping for a big run in the race this afternoon on Gabrial The Wire. He also has a live chance on the Richard Fahey-trained Umm Kulthum in the Scotty Brand Firth Of Clyde Stakes, Scotland’s only Group race.

FIRST RACE 1.20

THE MICROTECH GROUP EBF NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION Our opener today is a nursery - a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. Each runner in the line-up has qualified for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far, which determines the weight that they will have to carry in this contest. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race doesn’t have a maximum rating specified, so some classy two-year-olds will line up.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER TELL ME ALL SP: 9/4 fav Age/Weight: 2-9-7 Runners: 10 Jockey: Colin Keane Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott Bt Summary: Tell Me All came in for a lot of support in the market beforehand and justified favouritism albeit winning by only a short head from Yoshimi. He hit the front three furlongs out and was all out in the final furlong but did just enough.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): K Dalgleish (54 wins from 501 runners, 11%) runs HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Hannon (16 wins from 108 runners, 15%) runs LONGLAI FANCY THAT: R Fahey won this race in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The stable runs PYTHAGORAS today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: RECOVERY RUN trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 375 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS PYTHAGORAS justified strong market confidence to easily score on his nursery debut at Ripon earlier this month and is fancied to continue his progress for Richard Fahey. The Zoffany colt shaped there like one who would have more to offer in the future and could have too much for Longlai, who relished the step up in distance when successful at Salisbury earlier this month. Recovery Run is yet to run a bad race in four starts and completes the shortlist. WIN: PYTHAGORAS

THIS DAY IN...

Brando (right) became the highest rated horse to win the Ayr Gold Cup in 2016

THE final day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival oozes quality racing and over the years we have witnessed some memorable races with some truly class horses winning. Here are three such horses…

2019 & 2018 - WAARIF To win the same race at the Ayr Gold Cup Festival in successive years is an amazing feat and that was what the David O’Meara trained Waarif achieved last year when landing the Class 2 mile handicap under a fine ride from Danny Tudhope who replaced Robbie Downey at the last minute after Danny’s intended mount was a non-runner. He hit the front two furlongs out and stayed on well to cross the line half a length in front of hot favourite Kynren. Waarif won the race 12 months earlier when ridden by Connor McGovern. Unfortunately injury has robbed him of going for three in a row but we hope to see him back at the track next year.

2016 – BRANDO One of the classiest Ayr Gold Cup performances in recent years saw Brando, trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Tom Eaves, storm away inside the final furlong to win by a length and a half from Growl. Running in the colours of Mrs Angie Bailey, Brando was simply in a different class from his rivals and underlined his talents when going on to win several Group races including Group 1 in France. Brando continues in raining running at the highest level.

2005 – PRESTO SHINKO

There have been many close finishes in the Ayr Gold Cup down the years but the tightest ever came in 2005 when only two short heads and a neck separated the first four horses home. For a while it looked as if the stand side had the advantage with Irish runner Majestic Times appearing to be in front only to finish third to two fast finishers on the far side – the eventual winner Presto Shinko, trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Seb Sanders and runner up Fonthill Road, the mount of Paul Hanagan. Another far side finisher Yomato came fourth. A year later Fonthill Road won the race.

SECOND RACE 1.55

THE JORDAN ELECTRICS DOONSIDE CUP (CLASS 1) (Listed Race) RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 8st 12lb for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 7lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 3lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ENCAPSULATION SP: 9/2 Age/Weight: 3-8-7 Runners: 6 Jockey: Ben Curtis Trainer: Andrew Balding Summary: It takes a good three year-old to win this famous race and that’s certainly what Encapsulation proved to be last year. The filly was always handily placed and hit the front a furlong out to hold off the fast finishing favourite What’s The Story by a length.

The stable runs FOX CHAIRMAN today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: FOX CHAIRMAN trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 375 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS Fox Chairman represents the Andrew Balding stable that won this race in 2012, 2015 and 2019 and his recent form at Listed and Group level gives him a solid chance. Lord Glitters is closely matched with him on their York Stakes clash and the likeable grey should run his usual honest race, while Old Borough Cup winner Euchen Glen deserves a mention but this trip is shorter than ideal for him. However, ADDEYBB is 8lb and upwards ahead of these rivals on official figures and the dual Group 1 scorer is hard to oppose. WIN: ADDEYBB

A TRIBUTE TO PAT SMULLEN

Pat Smullen winning the 2012 Ayr Gold Cup on board Captain Ramius

IT was with a great deal of sadness we heard of the death this week in a Dublin hospital of the nine time Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen. Pat was a true gentleman and rode at Ayr several times over the years. His greatest success here came in the 2012 Ayr Gold Cup on board the Kevin Ryan trained Captain Ramius. He gave the horse a terrific ride and endeared himself to the team at Ayr that day with his quiet and courteous manner. Our thoughts are with his wife Frances and his children Hannah, Paddy and Sarah. 16

THIRD RACE 2.30

THE QTS AYR SILVER CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly. However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 5lb penalty (8lb for a winner of 2 races). This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs - a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER GOLDEN APOLLO SP: 12/1 Age/Weight: 5-9-4 Runners: 24 Jockey: David Allan Trainer: Tim Easterby Summary: This was a particularly strong renewal of the Silver Cup and Golden Apollo proved a worthy winner. He worked his way into the race to lead inside the final furlong and see of the challenge of Gabrial The Saint by a neck.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): K Dalgleish (54 wins from 501 runners, 11%) runs ABERAMA GOLD TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Easterby (14 wins from 102 runners, 14%) runs DANZAN, GOLDEN APOLLO and HYPERFOCUS LONGEST TRAVELLER: LOUIE DE PALMA trained by C Cox, Hungerford, 424 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS KING’S LYNN was beaten at odds-on when second at Doncaster on his first outing for 11 months but the horse that beat him, Starman, went on to score in Listed company at York earlier this month and a mark of 94 appears workable for Andrew Balding’s colt. Last year’s winner Golden Apollo has been acquitting himself well this season and another bold bid isn’t out of the question, while others to note include Atalanta’s Boy, a winner at Goodwood on his latest start, and Arbalet, who wears cheekpieces for the first time and has a decent record when ridden by Josephine Gordon. FOURTH RACE 3.05

THE SCOTTY BRAND FIRTH OF CLYDE STAKES (CLASS 1) (GROUP 3) (FOR THE AYRSHIRE AGRICULTURAL CHALLENGE CUP) RACE DESCRIPTION This six-furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, all runners will carry 9st before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners and 5lb for those successful in a Group 2 or Group 1.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ROSE OF KILDARE SP: 8/1 Age/Weight: 2-9-0 Runners: 9 Jockey: Joe Fanning Trainer: Mark Johnston Summary: Rose Of Kildare came into this race – Scotland’s only Group contest – having already raced ten times in her juvenile career and showed how gutsy she is by battling all the way to the line to win by half a length from Graceful Magic. She has won two more Group 3s since.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): R Fahey (35 wins from 358 runners, 10%) runs UMM KULTHUM TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Hannon (16 wins from 108 runners, 15%) runs CONCESSIONS LONGEST TRAVELLER: SLOANE PETERSON trained by J A Stack, Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS The Group 2 Lowther Stakes looks the form to concentrate on here, where UMM KULTHUM (third) finished one place ahead of She’s So Nice. Bringing a rating of 99 to the table, Richard Fahey’s charge is the one they all have to beat as that represented an outstanding effort on just her second career start. Scarlet Bear (third) and Illykato (fourth) are closely matched having performed creditably in defeat behind the excellent Happy Romance in Group 3 Dick Poole at Salisbury, and both warrant a place on the shortlist. WIN: UMM KULTHUM

FACT FILE

THE QTS AYR GOLD CUP Distance Six furlongs Prize money £75,000

WHEN WAS THE RACE FIRST RUN? The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was son by Chancellor who also won the race the following year. The race was run over two miles in these days.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER ON THE CURRENT COURSE? In 1907 the Ayr Gold Cup was run over the new course and over a new distance of six furlongs. The reason for the change in distance was that the Duke of Montrose wanted his horse Raeberry to have a better chance of winning the race. The Duke’s plans were scuppered when Charis won the race.

LEADING JOCKEYS?

LEADING TRAINERS?

Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice – John Lowe - Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune - Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996); Daryll Holland - Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahmaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori - Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).

Kevin Ryan trained his fourth winner of the Ayr Gold Cup in 2016 when Brando triumphed before going on to Group 1 glory. Kevin’s previous winners were Advanced (2007), Our Jonathan (2011) and Captain Ramius (2012). He has three runners in today’s race - Major Jumbo with Megan Nicholls riding, Hey Jonesy, the mount of Kevin Stott and Bielsa who will be partnered by Tom Eaves.

26

DO FAVOURITES HAVE A GOOD RECORD IN THE RACE? The answer is an emphatic no. Since 1980 the only favourites to win have been Coastal Bluff in 1996 at odds of 3-1, Don’t Touch in 2015 at 6-1 and Son Of Rest who was 5-1 favourite when he dead heated with Baron Bolt in 2018.

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? The QTS Group is one of the most successful businesses in the UK with its headquarters at Drumclog, South Lanarkshire, with bases throughout the country including Perth, Penrith, Nottingham and Preston. QTS provides a vast range of engineering infrastructure and specialist services to major organisations across the rail, utilities, construction and public services. They first sponsored at Ayr in 2012 and have previously supported both Ladies Night and the Scottish Champion Hurdle.

QUALITY COUNTS The QTS Ayr Gold Cup is one of the most competitive sprint handicaps in the country and invariably features some of the highest rated handicap sprinters in the country. Today’s contest is no exception with several horses who regularly feature in Group company taking part.

REMEMBERING PAST WINNERS Chancellor won the race, in both 1804 and 1805 and there is a restaurant on the racecourse named after him as there is Roman Warrior, winner of the race in 1975. And the Be Friendly Bae is named after the horse of the same name, winner of the Gold Cup in 1967 and owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan. 27

FIFTH RACE 3.40

THE WILLIAM HILL AYR GOLD CUP (HERITAGE HANDICAP) (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION This afternoon’s feature race is an historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ANGEL ALEXANDER SP: 28/1 Age/Weight: 3-8-13 Runners: 24 Jockey: Richard Kingscote Trainer: Tom Dascombe Summary: Co-owned by footballing legend Michael Owen, Angel Alexander was drawn on the stand side and led his group of horses over a furlong out getting up to beat Growl who was leading on the far side by half a length.

TODAY’S TIPS Mr Lupton made a winning visit to The Curragh last weekend and is of interest once again, with Billy Garrity’s claim nullifying his 5lb penalty. However, STONE OF DESTINY landed a competitive renewal of the Portland with a bit to spare and can strike once again to give Andrew Balding his third Ayr Gold Cup. The consistent Arecibo was fourth in that Doncaster contest, and is part of a strong David O’Meara challenge that also includes recent winners Young Fire and Cold Stare, as well as Gulliver. Kevin Ryan has a great record in this and saddles Royal Ascot winner Hey Jonesy, Major Jumbo and Bielsa, while Kynren is interesting dropping back to 6f following wind surgery. WIN: STONE OF DESTINY

SIXTH RACE 4.15

THE LUXURY STAYCATIONS AT WESTERN HOUSE HOTEL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER WAARIF SP: 11/2 Age/Weight: 6-9-6 Runners: 11 Jockey: Danny Tudhope Trainer: David O’Meara Summary: Waarif had won this race in 2018 and was running off the same mark. This was a very impressive display as he led over two furlongs out and kept on gamely inside the last furlong to cross the line half a length in front of Kynren.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): J Goldie (45 wins from 525 runners, 9%) runs NICHOLAS T TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Easterby (14 wins from 102 runners, 14%) runs AL ERAYG LONGEST TRAVELLER: ZWAYYAN trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 375 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS David O’Meara has won the last two renewals of this contest and can add

further success to that record with recent Thirsk scorer SHELIR. The former Dermot Weld-trained gelding had previously shaped with promise when sixth in a competitive York handicap, and a 6lb rise might not be enough to prevent another victory. Brunch has won three of his four starts this season and remains unexposed, while Zwayyan caught the eye when fourth at Kempton a fortnight ago.

SEVENTH RACE 4.50

THE BRANDINGHUB SIGNS & PRINT HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION The penultimate race this afternoon is another handicap, this time for stayers and run over one mile and about five furlongs. It has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated between 76 and 95. Like all handicaps on this afternoon’s card this means that should a horse rated 95 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER SHAMAD SP: 6/1 Age/Weight: 5-8-13 Runners: 14 Jockey: Sean Davis Trainer: Peter Fahey Summary: The longest race on the card produced one of the tightest finishes with Irish raider Shamad touching off Employer and Battle Of Marathon by a short head and a neck. The winner deserved his success and showed a great attitude throughout.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (15-20): R M Smith (23 wins from 199 runners, 12%) runs GLASSES UP TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Easterby (14 wins from 102 runners, 14%) runs MULTELLIE LONGEST TRAVELLER: MAKE MY DAY trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, 415 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS All six of the declared runners look to have some sort of chance, but none appeal more than MAKE MY DAY. Ralph Beckett’s charge was impressive when winning on his handicap debut over 1m4f at York and probably didn’t stay when tackling an extended 2m round the Knavesmire subsequently. Dropping back in distance, he is fancied to see off the likes of Andrew Balding’s three-year-old Bronze River and Glasses Up, a six-time course scorer who went close in a fiercely competitive handicap at York before a fair effort over 1m2f here on Thursday. WIN: MAKE MY DAY

DANGER: BRONZE RIVER

The finale is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76-95. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. B O O K Y O U R TA X I | G E T A Q U OT E | PAY B Y C A R D
