8 Form guide

9 Age

10 Weight

Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time), going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win

• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - SEAN QUINLAN

The 2019 Scottish Grand National winning jockey on Takingrisks for Nicky Richards is back at one of his happiest hunting grounds today after bringing up his half-century of winners for the current season at Newcastle on Monday on Luminaries for Hawick trainer Ewan Whillans. Quinlan got his second halfcentury underway quickly with another winner at Catterick on Wednesday on Hostile Hotelier for regular benefactor Jennie Candlish and his biggest win of the season so far came on Famous Bridge in Haydock’s £100,000 Grand National Trial for trainer Nicky Richards. Sean has 5 rides on today’s card with two for his wife Lizzie and one each for Richards, Nick Alexander and Paul Robson.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - BRIAN ELLISON

North Yorkshire based Ellison doesn’t send many jumpers to Ayr but the mainly Flat trainer has saddled 2 winners from just 19 runners on the level here in recent years and his runners today merit close consideration. The trainer has been campaigning his stablestar Onesmoothoperator in Dubai over the winter and last year’s Northumberland Plate winner at Newcastle has also been campaigned in Australia where he won the Geelong Cup before a midfield finish in the Melbourne Cup just along the road at Flemington. Ellison runs recent Musselburgh disappointment Freddy Robinson under Craig Nichol in today’s handicap hurdle at 3.25 and the trainer also saddles the twice-placed bumper horse Geordie Mackem under the same rider in the finale at 5.10

HEADS OR HARPS caught the eye when filling second place over 2m3f at Wetherby 10 days ago and this drop in trip could help him to go one better, despite a 4lb rise. Dance Thief scored over C&D two starts ago and hit the crossbar at this venue most recently. Those performances suggest that he may be the main threat to the selection, although Chapel Green and Tommy Combats should not be discounted.

Stewards Note:

BIG GINGE: Following its run on 7/2/2025 it was reported that the horse hung right-handed.

Probable S.P’s: 15-2 Bo Zenith (FR), 8-1 Go Dante (GB), 9-1 Lump Sum (FR), 10-1 Batman Girac (FR), 11-1 Spirits Bay (GB), 12-1 Wreckless Eric (GB), Afadil (FR), 14-1 Knickerbockerglory (IRE), Ooh Betty (IRE), To Chase A Dream (GB), 22-1 We’re Red And Blue (GB), 28-1 King William Rufus (FR), Sorceleur (FR), 40-1 Hardy du Seuil (FR), Tintintin (FR), Big Ginge (IRE), 100-1 Tapley (GB)

The answer to this pre-Cheltenham Festival puzzle could be AFADIL, who is 8lb lower compared to when finishing fifth in the County Hurdle at last season’s Festival and he arrives here on the back of a solid effort in the Scottish equivalent of that valuable handicap at Musselburgh. Go Dante is also on a good mark (now 2lb lower than when winning this 12 months ago) and he is feared most ahead of Spirits Bay, while cases can also be made for the likes of Batman Girac, Bo Zenith and Lump Sum.

DECLARED RUNNERS 11

2024: DONSO STAR 6 9 6 Ben Smith 10-1 (R Mike Smith) 7 ran Tongue Strap worn by No. 6. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 9. Stewards Note: SANTA CLARITA: Following its run on 20/1/2025 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Lavida Adiva (IRE), 5-1 Ruby Island (GB), 6-1 Fox’s Fancy (IRE), 8-1 Sunday Soldier (IRE), 11-1 Sunset Hill (IRE), 12-1 Mellificent (IRE), 14-1 Just Call Me Lucy (GB), 20-1 Dollar Collar (IRE), 22-1 Anti Bridgie (IRE), Anamanda (FR), 25-1 Santa Clarita (FR)

Cases can be made for plenty of these, but none more so than LAVIDA ADIVA The six-year-old won over 2m4f at Aintree two starts ago and was unfortunate to bump into a well-handicapped rival when second at Market Rasen most recently. Sunday Soldier out ran her odds when second in Listed company at Warwick a month ago and she has to be on the shortlist. Others to note are Just Call Me Lucy, Fox’s Fancy and Ruby Island totewin: Lavida Adiva

Bashful may have been worth more than the winning margin suggests when going in by a length at Kelso last time and he holds an obvious chance off 6lb higher. However, it may pay to side with APOLOGISE, who is unbeaten in two starts since joining the Gary McGill stable. Considering the manner of his success at Clonmel last time, he could prove tough to beat. Thereisnodoubt is another to watch out for.

totewin: Apologise

Cave Court was successful over the smaller obstacles at Naas on his most recent start and is an interesting contender back over fences. However, the vote goes to previous course winner NED TANNER, who was beaten two lengths into second in a good race at Kelso last month. MASTER BRICKLAYER finished in the money on both previous attempts over hurdles at this venue and he could be worth chancing given his potential for progress in this discipline now he steps up in trip. Ninetofive also appears to be on an upwards trajectory and is another who should appreciate the additional yardage, while Boolamore Classic and Miami Steve are just a couple of other notable contenders.

RACE RESULT

2ND

3RD 4TH TIME

There are some interesting newcomers to monitor in the betting, with the likes of Je Mr Dawson, Wanderinginthedark and point-to-point second The Hatchet all noted as potentially decent prospects. However, the experience held by GEORDIE MACKEM could prove vital and the Brian Ellison-trained five-year-old tops the shortlist after two promising placed efforts at Wetherby and Newcastle. Daly Boy was second on his only point-to-point start and could be the biggest danger.
