8 Form guide
9 Age
10 Weight
Included in the form guide below each horse is a form rating, calculated from the horse’s previous performances, taking into account a number of variables such as finishing position, distance won/beaten by, horses beaten/beaten by weight carried, race time (compared with the standard time) going allowance, number of days since that performance, etc.
Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.
HOW TO BET
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet by naming the horse. The bookmaker will repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. If your horse wins, give your Betting Ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, ie. for a win or a place.
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise you as to your rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes.e.g. £1, £5, £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
EACH WAY BETTING
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only

The vote goes to BALLYFORT, who posted a much improved effort to fill the runner-up spot over 2m here last month, having struggled in a couple of chase starts previously. Nick Alexander’s gelding is able to compete from an unchanged mark and, now upped in trip, it would come as no surprise were he to find the necessary improvement. Millyupdahilly goes handicapping from a potentially workable mark and must enter calculations, while Wearelongterm appeals most of the remainder. totewin: Ballyfort
TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - IAN DUNCAN
The local trainer doesn’t have to send his horses very far from the village of Coylton just 5 miles east of the racecourse here and Duncan has had a successful season so far with his small team of jumpers. The Northern Irishman has had big race success in the past with a winner at the Cheltenhham Festival in 2005 thanks to Another Rum and the same horse filled third place in the same year’s Scottish Grand National here at Ayr behind Joe’s Edge. Duncan took his name off the notorious “cold list” when he saddled 3 winners in 2 days back in October last year with the first of those successes coming at Kelso on the Saturday and 2 more following here at Ayr on the Monday with stable stalwarts, Adveram and Celestial Fashion. Duncan has also trained the winner of next Saturday’s Eider Chase at Newcastle with Milborough in 2015 and the in-form handler will be hoping for more success with 4 runners on today’s 8-race card.

TODAY’S JOCKEY TO WATCH - DANNY MCMENAMIN
Danny was champion conditional jockey in season 2020/21 and the rider has continued to show he’s one of the top jockeys around with plenty of winners for various trainers around the country Most of McMenamin’s winners tend to be trained by his main employer Nicky Richards but the rider has tasted success this season with Dianne Sayer’s Charlie Uberalles and Ann Hamilton’s Pay The Piper as well as winners for Chris Grant, Nick Alexander, Henry Hogarth and Adrian Keatley The highlight of the jockey’s season so far may well be the emergence of the Nicky Richards’ trained The Kalooki Kid as one of the brightest young chasing talents around and the jockey has 3 rides for Richards today before moving on to some other familiar beats at Newcastle and Kelso later this week. 15% SUCCESS RATE AT AYR

Picked up for 100,000 pounds after finishing second to the now 120-rated Rosscahill in an Irish point-to-point in December 2023, MALFOY MANOR has been somewhat indifferent over hurdles so far. However, an opening mark of 103 could be a real gift and sent up in trip on this handicap bow, the Blue Bresil gelding is taken to get off the mark. Powers Dilemma enters handicaps for the first time, too, and he must be of interest while Blame Rose, who won twice on testing ground last year before unseating on her return last month, is also noted.

CORAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL FESTIVAL PREVIEW
CPMS Novices’ Handicap Chase
This £50,000 race over 3 miles has become an increasingly important part of the Festival since being upgraded in 2018 and Willie Mullins sent joint top-weight Sharjah to win last year after the one-time top class hurdler had finished 4-3-4-0 in his previous 4 starts in Grade One chases over shorter trips.
The 6-times Grade 1 winning hurdler was ridden by Paul Townend after Dan Skelton had saddled the previous year’s winner Sail Away, ridden by his sister-in law Bridget Andrews, a family victory which followed Dan and Harry Skelton’s victory in the same race with Molly The Dolly back in 2019.
The last Scottish-trained winner of the race was the Alistair Whillans trained Samstown in 2014 (ridden by son and current licence holder Ewan) and the now-retired but still very much hands-on Alistair celebrated his 70th birthday just last month.
Sail Away and Bridget Andrews winning The CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase last year.

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 2, 7.
Stewards Note:
ARTIC ROW: Following its run on 30/11/2024 it was reported that the horse had a cut on its right foreleg.
Probable S.P’s: 13-8 Walk On Quest (IRE), 11-2 Artic Row (GB), 6-1 Grand Voyage (FR), 7-1 As Tears Go By (GB), 17-2 Step Above (IRE), 11-1 Brayhill (IRE), 28-1 Overcourt (GB), 40-1 Duty Calls (IRE)
Now two from two over fences having won at Carlisle in November, WALK ON QUEST is expected to continue on an upward curve. Lucinda Russell’s charge is 5lb higher on the back of a short absence, but a step up in trip can elicit further improvement and this looks to be a winnable opportunity. Grand Voyage bumped into a progressive rival at Hexham in December and he could be a real threat. Artic Row should not be underestimated either.

SUNNYVILLA returned from a break to rout the opposition on his debut for Nicky Richards in a class 3 handicap at Haydock in December. A 7lb higher looks fair after that comfortable success and, with the attributes of this course likely to play to his strengths, the still-enthusiastic nine-year-old could be tough to overhaul. Rock On Jet won over hurdles here last month and is notable on his first try over regulation fences. Lively Citizen, a C&D winner off 3lb lower latest, and Dance Thief complete the shortlist. totewin:

Don Brocco won over the larger obstacles for the first time at Carlisle last Monday and has to be respected under a 7lb penalty. That said, the nine-year-old was able to dominate on that occasion and it remains to be seen whether he’ll get a similar lead here. Le Grand Vert is likely to appreciate stepping back up in trip, but a chance is taken on MONTYS SOLDIER Runner-up on his chasing bow at Ffos Las in November, the seven-year-old should have more to come.
