A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRIDAY 30 JULY 2021

Good Afternoon. Welcome to the first meeting after our summer break, our long established Ladies Day, more significantly, our first fixture back with spectators at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. We look forward to a continuation of the lifting of restrictions over the summer across the course, as crowds finally return after more than 12 months away. Thank you for your patience over this difficult time, and today, as we progress through the changes under the Welsh Government Guidance. There are eight exciting races scheduled for today beginning at 1.00pm with the feature race at 2.10pm. I would like to offer my thanks to Close Brothers and R W Hough and Sons who are longstanding sponsors at Bangor-on-Dee for their support today. Now more than ever, the continued support of our business from our attendees and partners is valued greatly. I hope you have an outstanding day with us here at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. Today is an unusual opportunity for you to attend a much-loved fixture in an intimate setting of a significantly reduced crowd. Our next meeting is Family Fun Evening on Monday 16th August, when we will provide lots of FREE entertainment for the children and we hope you will join us again. Find more information on our fixtures on our website at www.bangorondeeraces.co.uk

REVISED CODE OF CONDUCT JULY 2021 As part of our joint commitment to each other and the communities in which we operate, all racegoers should be aware of the Code of Conduct before entering a racecourse: For your safety and the safety of others, please make sure to observe the following whilst at our Racecourse: • If you’re travelling to the racecourse via public transport, please ensure you adhere to the relevant guidance. • Do not travel to the racecourse if you have any Covid-19 symptoms as entry will be denied. • For the safety of other racegoers and racecourse staff, please consider wearing a face covering in busy indoor areas or outside where social distancing cannot be maintained. This is a legal requirement in both Scotland and Wales in most indoor areas. • Regularly wash your hands, use hand sanitizer and avoid touching your face and dispose of any used tissues appropriately. • Familiarise yourself with your entry point [entry time] and location of amenities within the racecourse • Some racecourses may choose to operate a cashless event. On-course bookmakers/pool betting operators may accept cash. • Enjoy the vast amounts of space around the racecourse and avoid congregating in busy areas (for example, along the rail or by the Winning Post). • Make sure all walkways, corridors and doorways etc are clear before you walk through. • Follow all signage and the instructions of staff, officials or any emergency service personnel present at the racecourse. • Do not try to access areas of the racecourse apart the area detailed on your ticket. • Make sure other members of your group have read and understood these guidelines.

Thank you so much for your support and co-operation. We hope you have a wonderful day with us at the races.

HOW TO BET WITH A

RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT

Win only

EACH WAY

A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. · Fewer than 5 runners – all to win · 5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2 · 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3 · Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall,Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY. Tel: 01480 499180 In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

DID YOU KNOW

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Donald McCain won both divisions of the Retraining Of Racehorses Novices’ Hurdle in 2020 and the local handler is double-handed in this year’s renewal at 2.45 courtesy of Ibbenburen and October Storm. A good opportunity for bumper winner CRYSTAL GAZING - Nicky Henderson’s only runner on the card - to oblige at the seventh attempt over hurdles. The mare was reportedly struck into when underperforming after a break at Uttoxeter recently but there was enough in two earlier runner-up efforts at Ludlow to suggest this contest is winnable. Points winner Gordyny may prove most troublesome if settling better than she did at Newton Abbot on her hurdles bow, with long-standing maiden Sinndarella also respected in first-time blinkers.

RACE 2

WIN: CRYSTAL GAZING

RACE 3

WIN: EYEOFTHESCORPION

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: IBBENBUREN

Sir Tivo would have secured a hat-trick but for a late error when edged out at Stratford last time and he’s likely to go off a warm order to regain winning ways. But, his mark continues to climb and he could be vulnerable to BOAGRIUS, who has won off 11lb higher and signalled a return to form when running well for a long way in a better grade at Aintree latest. Away At Dawn floundered on soft ground at Perth recently but he’s a threat judged on earlier form. WIN: BOAGRIUS

RACE 6

DANGER: ROCK ON ROCCO

Fontana Ellissi brings the highest rating to the table here but he’s taken a couple of backward steps since winning at Ludlow in March and may be worth taking on under a penalty. Splinter and Ibbenburen, second at Southwell and Stratford respectively, are viable alternatives but MY ROCKSTAR could offer more value. Placed in an Irish point, the five-yearold couldn’t justify market support at Newton Abbot on his hurdling bow last month but it was his first start for nine months and he could be a different proposition here. WIN: MY ROCKSTAR

DANGER: SIR TIVO

INVINCIBLE WISH proved a revelation following wind surgery when ‘winning’ at Newton Abbot last time, only to later lose the race in the stewards’ room for interference. He has more to do in this much bigger field but his current mark is clearly exploitable. Pass Rusher and Two Blondes, who filled the places in the same race at Cartmel last time, are amongst the biggest dangers, particularly the former who seemed to respond to the application of cheekpieces. Genever Dragon is also respected. WIN: INVINCIBLE WISH

RACE 7

DANGER: ISTHEBAROPEN

An intriguing contest in which recent winners Rock On Rocco and Havana Hermano both did enough in defeat last time to suggest they remain feasibly treated despite their rising marks. Even so, it’s hard to look beyond Irish raider ROI DE DUBAI given John McConnell’s prolific strike-rate with his runners in Britain. A three-time winning hurdler, the nine-yearold ran a race full of promise when returning from a long absence to go close on just his second chase start at Tipperary recently and that blow-out should have brought him on. WIN: ROI DE DUBAI

DANGER: PASS RUSHER

Considering she made a mighty blunder at the first flight, CHOSEN SHANT produced a terrific effort under the circumstances to finish third over 2m4f at Worcester last time out and, providing she jumps cleaner here, this longer trip could see her off the mark. C&D winner Layerthorpe is an obvious alternative having twice gone close recently, albeit of lower marks, while blinkers and a sliding mark could unlock something better out of the frustrating Wigglesworth, who again fluffed his lines when fancied at Uttoxeter last time. WIN: CHOSEN SHANT

RACE 8

DANGER: GORDYNY

The progressive EYEOFTHESCORPION had three-time subsequent winner Hydroplane in arrears when chasing home another subsequent winner, Bushypark, at Haydock last time out in December and, with that form working out so well, it would be no surprise if Graham McPherson’s gelding was to prove ahead of his current mark after a break. Isthebaropen, who improved to open his account at Southwell last time, is an obvious danger despite a 5lb rise, while Finisk River has dropped back to a handy mark on the evidence of a recent Perth runner-up effort.

DANGER: LAYERTHORPE

A trappy finale and perhaps a chance for MARBLE MOON to return from a short break and exploit a potentially lenient hurdles mark having rediscovered his form over fences during the spring prior to blotting his copybook last time (never travelling after a bad error). Cheltenam De Vaige and Imperial Acolyte have also done most of their recent racing over fences but are not without hope, while a positive market move for the lightly-raced Norley on his first start for Ben Pauling could be significant. WIN: MARBLE MOON

DANGER: NORLEY

Remembering

Bobby McAlpine 6 May 1932 – 25 June 2021

Bobby McAlpine was an affable chairman of Bangor on Dee from 1994 to 2002 and prior to that a member of the race committee for many years. In the 70’s and 80’s Sir Alfred McAlpine , his family construction company , sponsored the most valuable day’s racing at Bangor normally a Saturday in March or April due to Bobby’s enthusiasm and support. A long-standing member of the Jockey Club, he also served as director of Aintree Racecourse, and stewarded at Wolverhampton, Bangor-On-Dee, Chester, Haydock, Aintree and Newmarket. His interest in racing had been fired as a boy when his uncle told him about winning the Grand National in 1921 with his horse Shaun Spadah. He was still in his twenties when he agreed to buy a four-year-old gelding from Ireland called Marnrack, which was enough to get him hooked. Racing success followed for McAlpine, with notable wins in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1970, beating the Derby winner Blakeney. A reputable breeder, he bred winners in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, Benson & Hedges Cup at York and, most notably, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1986 with odds of 40-1. He owned numerous winners at Bangor. Bobby was a much-loved and much-respected member of the Chester Race Company board, with him serving as Honorary President until the time of his passing. Bobby was one of the great characters in the racing community and he will be sorely missed. The thoughts of all at Bangor-On-Dee are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Race Summary: There has to be a slight concern about PATH OF THUNDER getting a clear run if ridden in the same way as Newmarket but there’s no doubt he’s well-in under a 3lb penalty and he could do better again if the blinkers continue to work. Maydanny dominated a big field over 1 1/4m here last year and should be able to get a good position from stall 5 so he’s feared most ahead of Magical Morning.

Race Summary: CHOSEN SHANT is going the right way and did well to stay on for third from a long way back at Worcester a month ago so, provided they go a true gallop, he’s capable of opening his account. In-form pair Accordini and Layerthorpe are, like the selection, partnered by relatively experienced riders, so they’re expected to be thereabouts. 1-2-3: 1.CHOSEN SHANT (IRE) 2.ACCORDINI 3.LAYERTHORPE (IRE) FREE form for all British and Irish meetings is available online every day at timeform.com/free

Don’t forget to bet on the 4:45 at GOODWOOD and 4:50 at WOLVERHAMPTON. HORSE WELFARE At all our race meetings there are three equine veterinary surgeons on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to injured horses. This may involve screens being erected around a fallen horse but does not necessarily mean that it is fatally injured.

CENTRE COURSE No Racegoers are allowed in the centre of the course from half an hour before the first race until after the last race for safety reasons. If any spectators do wish to view a fence closer to the action, they are welcome to walk up to the last fence in the home straight on the outside of the course.
