HOW TO BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER

WAYS TO BET

STRAIGHT EACH WAY

Win only A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed.

STANDARD TERMS FOR EACH WAY BETTING

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

· Fewer than 5 runners – all to win

5-7 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2

· 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3

Handicaps with 12-15 runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3

· Handicaps with 16 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

AWAY BETTING

Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE

At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

PLACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a Stewards’ Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration of Gambling on Tracks Ltd, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 60 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 4WY.

Tel: 01480 499180

In the unlikely event that no independent bookmaker turns up to service either end of the racecourse (Bangor and Overton car parks), Bangor Sport will be able to service all betting requirements. Bangor Sport will offer to either ‘take the price’ or use the SP as a means of settling any bet. We will endeavour to show all races (including all those from away courses) on screens at either end of the course. If you have any queries, please ask a member of staff for help.

15. A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

16. Jockey’s Name. If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST SELECTIONS ON THE DAY

LORD DU MESNIL shaped with promise on his seasonal return at Warwick last month and while a few of these arrive with something to prove, Richard Hobson’s 12-year-old ought to go very close. Eva’s Oskar (sixth) contested that same race and it would come as no surprise were he to better that effort. For One Night Only is another to consider

Second on her chasing debut at Fakenham before bolting up in first-time cheekpieces (retained) at Wetherby last time, MICKS JET looks set to progress further now upped to three miles. A 10lb rise will make things tougher but, even so, that might not be enough. Lagonda continues to run well in defeat and she’s unlikely to be far away, although chasing debutant Victoria Milano could be a bigger threat.

CAERULEUM has made real strides over the larger obstacles recently, winning at both Wincanton and Taunton in December This marathon trip promises to suit Robert Walford’s seven-year-old and, off a handy racing weight, he may well complete the hat-trick. Fern Hill was just touched off at Fakenham last time and must be taken seriously, while others to note include Duke Of Deception and Rouge De L’quest.

LAGANHILL did it well when scoring comfortably on debut at Haydock in December, and the runner-up from that contest has gone on to win easily since. Henry Daly’s charge can defy a penalty, with the consistent Big Ginge looking best placed to chase him home having finished second on each of his last four starts. A taking winner at Sedgefield last time out, Paddys Policy must enter calculations too.

Given wind surgery since his last start when second at Haydock in December, THE GRAFTER has been consistent since switching to hurdles and he still looks on a workable mark, despite a 2lb rise for that latest effort The six-year-old may have too much for The Grey Man, who has been raised 4lb for a determined success over shorter at Leicester recently Completing the shortlist are Bellbird, Clinton Lane and Risk

Visual Impact found only a useful novice too strong at Ayr 17 days ago and she enters handicaps off what looks a fair mark. Coastal Rock is another to bear in mind, but this can go the way of FRESH SPECULATION A beaten favourite at Uttoxeter last time, the Ffos Las winner could be worth another chance back on soft ground and the booking of Sam Twiston-Davies is a big plus.

The combination of a 236-day break and entry into handicap company proved just the trick for WRAPPEDINRUBIES when opening her account at Catterick in December. Donald McCain’s mare is entitled to build on that seasonal bow and she’s fancied to make light work of a 4lb nudge up in the ratings. The biggest threat may emerge from recent Chepstow winner Walkinthecotswolds, while market support for handicap debutant Edmond would be interesting.

JOHN HEWITT

John Hewitt had a passion for racing which gave him immense pleasure throughout his life.

He enjoyed hunting with the Flint and Denbigh and the Anglesey Drag, often accompanied by his daughter, Karen and son, Richard.

He loved riding in Point-to-Points and, in later life, supporting his horses at race meetings across the UK.

Golden Sunset Holidays are delighted to sponsor a race in his memory.

Race Summary: WALKINTHECOTSWOLDS showed the benefit of wind surgery/fitting of a tongue tie when opening her account in good style at Chepstow last week and, unpenalised for that, she makes a good deal of appeal again with underfoot conditions holding no fears Fellow last-time-out winner Wrappedinrubies rates next best for Donald McCain. Handicap debutant Edmond and Auntie Maggie are others worth a look. 1-2-3:
