RACEDAY

MONDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2025

Official race programme £3.00

WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton’s BetGoodwin Raceday featuring the BetGoodwin Sussex National

Welcome to the BetGoodwin Raceday and today we have a tremendous 7-race card which includes the rescheduled BetGoodwin Sussex National and this race will still carry the same exciting prize fund of £35,000. This illustrates that Plumpton are committed to ensuring that this premier race retains its prestige, and we look forward to an exciting and memorable day of racing.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin and Southern Cranes and Access Ltd for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, BetGoodwin, Chris Simpson and Howden. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a cracking 7 race card today, with 52 runners declared worth over 92k of prize money. Our main race today is the 5th race, The BetGoodwin Sussex National (Class 3) worth £35,000 with 11 going to post. The rescheduled renewal this year looks very competitive with the winner of the 2024 Sussex National, Dom Of Mary, going in search of a win in the race for the second time, something that has never been done before.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable was very well received last season and today we are lucky to have Who Dares Win who has run 60 times and has amassed over £360k earnings across both codes (flat and jumps). Who Dares Wins ran at Plumpton in January 2020 finishing second, being denied by a neck. Pop over and give him a polo and a pat.

Our next two fixtures will be Monday 24th February and Monday 10th March so if you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for either day make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team now.

Looking ahead, make sure you plan for our Easter Festival (Premier raceday) which will be held on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st April. By booking now you will secure our best ticket prices as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

A 6lb rise was enough to thwart Malago Rose in her bid to record a double at Fakenham 22 days ago, although she could feature if brushing up her jumping. Regardless, the stoutly-bred LUMI PLUGIN looks just the type to improve for this marked step up in distance and the Kayf Tara gelding is fancied to build on his latest second at Leicester. The lightly-raced Vendant arrives on the back of a runner-up effort at Fontwell and is feared most.

SELECTION - LUMI PLUGIN

Neil Mulholland’s four-year-old NARRAGANSETT must have a good chance judged on his performances in juvenile hurdles at Market Rasen and Wetherby. A winner on the Flat in a Curragh handicap, it’s just a matter of time before he breaks through in this sphere. Hurdles debutant Under The Sun also warrants consideration for a top yard, likewise Ludlow bumper winner Gregorians Star.

SELECTION - NARRAGANSETT

Danger - Under The Sun

Theonlywayiswessex supplemented some decent efforts in defeat when landing the spoils over C&D in December. Although Alan King’s charge scored with something in hand that day, a 10lb hike could prove his downfall and a chance is taken on chase debutant KORUS. The five-yearold arrives on the back of a good third at Ffos Las and he looks just the type to excel in this discipline. Ede’iffs Rock can also figure.

SELECTION - KORUS

Danger - Theonlywayiswessex

CONFINENTIC showed major improvement from first to second start over hurdles when scoring over 2m here last time out, and the rise in distance could eke out further progress on his handicap debut. Telhimlisten can give him the most to think about following a taking success at Sedgefield, while the consistent Godot is likely to be thereabouts as well after finishing second at Lingfield last time out.

SELECTION - CONFINENTIC

Danger - Telhimlisten

A tentative vote goes to SIBERIAN STAR, who was value for more than the winning margin when hampered and eventually got up late to score over 3m1f at Catterick last time out. A further rise in distance looks like a good move, and he may have enough to see off recent course winner Invincible Nao, and Supervisor, who wasn’t beaten far at Catterick on his most recent outing.

SELECTION - SIBERIAN STAR

Danger - Invincible Nao

Alto Alto faced just three rivals when he won this race off 3lb higher last year and although dangerous to underestimate with a visor added, recent form suggests the more progressive JOLYJUMP could be a safer option. Unexposed in this discipline, the son of Kapgarde is highly appealing on just his fourth start over the larger obstacles. C&D winner Non Stop is the pick of the remainder.

SELECTION - Jolyjump

Danger - Alto Alto

Running off just 3lb higher than when she won at Stratford last summer, GETMETOTHEMOON is an attractive proposition bidding to double her career tally with Chad Bament, who knows her well, claiming a very handy 10lb. Little Soiree runs for a yard that has turned a corner of late and also commands respect having been cut some slack by the handicapper. Sawpit Sienna completes the shortlist.

HORSE CARE AT PLUMPTON

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
