The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

WELCOME TO

Welcome to Carlisle Racecourse for the Colin Parker Premier Raceday.

I am delighted to see so many of you joining us today for the biggest Jump raceday of our season, with a fantastic prize fund of £200,000 on offer for winning connections today, headlined by the £40,000 Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase

Run over two and a half miles and carrying Listed status, the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase commemorates the late Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer Colin Parker, who was based at Lockerbie, and is restricted to first and second season chasers. Its impressive roll of honour features the likes of future Grade One winners Lostintranslation, Waiting Patiently, Cyrname and Monet’s Garden, plus Grand National hero Many Clouds

Also on the card today is the £40,000 Listed Houghton Mares Chase which has been won by Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Zambella in each of the last three years.

We wish connections of those with runners today the very best of luck

The Border Hound Trail will begin on the Hurdle Track at 12.05 with the Retraining of Racehorses Parade taking place shortly after at 12.10 in the Parade Ring

A huge thank you to all of our generous sponsors today for their valued support.

Looking ahead at Carlisle we still have lots to look forward to including the Weatherbys Graduation Chase on our Remembrance Raceday, Monday 11th November plus the Pertemps Network Hurdle on Sunday 15th December which is our annual Christmas Jumper Raceday.

If you are still looking for a venue for your Christmas Party we have availability on both December racedays (1st & 15th) as well as tables at our Après Ski Christmas Party Nights so please do get in touch with a member of the team for more information

Thank you for supporting us today and I hope to see you again very soon!

With best wishes,

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETINGMONDAY 11TH NOVEMBER

REMEMBRANCE RACEDAY

Falling close to Remembrance Day, our Afternoon Racing on Monday 11 November gives us a chance to pay our respects with an excellent day of Jumps action Thanks to a great card, it’s a raceday that is well worth attending, and a brilliant way to wipe away those Monday blues.

Antonia Reid

Today sees the running of the Antonia Reid Memorial Novices’ Hurdle, a race remembering a familiar and popular local figure.

Antonia, the daughter of former Carlisle clerk of the course Major Tim Riley, was just 62 when she passed away in August.

She started riding out for the late Gordon Richards when she was 13 and began her first secretarial role with Peter Calver in 1981.

A spell followed in France before she worked in Newmarket for Geoff Lewis and William Haggas and then returned to Greystoke to the Richards stable where Nicky is now the trainer Antonia loved her trips to Carlisle particularly when organising the Ennerdale Club, a private box containing like-minded, fun-loving ladies including her mother Tarn.

And today isn’t the first time Antonia has had a race bearing her name at Carlisle.

A contest was staged in her honour in 2021 to mark her being presented with a Lifetime In Racing Award, an accolade that was so well deserved.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

Colin Parker

In September 2000, racing lost one ofthe great gentleman ofthe sport when Colin Parker lost his brave battle against cancer.

Parker was a stalwart of the Northern jumping scene from his days as a rider through to his death at the age of 55.

As a local Cumbrian, Parker rode 50 winners under rules before joining the Gordon Richards yard as Head Lad. Parker took out his own license and trained his first winner, Brandy Hambro owned by Ray Green, in 1987 here at Carlisle and a flood of winners followed including the brilliant Novice Chaser Sparky Gayle who was unbeaten in six starts during 1996/97 when partnered with local jockey Brian Storey.

The last winner, Trump, was sent out by Parker at Kelso in May 2000

This historic race was first ran as the Colin Parker Memorial in 2006 when Northern Racing Legend Monet’s Garden was first past the post for Nicky Richards under jockey Tony Dobbin. The Listed Contest has gone from strength to strength over the years and is often noted as an early destination for some of the best chasers around.

Raymond Green has very generously sponsored this race over the years, for which the Parker family are eternally grateful.

GALIA DES LITEAUX made a winning return in a similar event at Market Rasen last season before going on to have a solid campaign, and she looks the one to beat again on her comeback this time around. El Elefante and Smiling Getaway both made a bright start to their chasing careers when winning on return and are obvious threats.
