OFFICIAL RACE CARD & FORM GUIDE £3
WELCOME On behalf of all of us on Cartmel racecourse, my Family and I would like to extend to you the warmest of welcomes and heartfelt thanks for being with us today, after such a long and sad interval. To all our visitors, but especially to those of you for whom lockdown has been a hardship, we sincerely hope that your day with us will be happy and herald the start of a new and better future. We were able to race Behind Closed Doors for three fixtures last year, and then with reduced crowds for this year so far; it has taught us that Cartmel is just not what it should be without you, our loyal supporters. As we approach the end of our season now, the much-contested Cartmel Championship is well underway, with fabulous performances here from Jockey Charlotte Jones and Trainer James Moffatt. But, of course, it’s not over until it’s over, so let’s see who takes the points this weekend! I would like to thank Fitzdares for their support today, as main sponsor and it is marvellous to welcome to Cartmel Bobby Burns from Fitzdares – his first visit to Cartmel. Also many thanks to Molson Coors who also sponsor today; we are very grateful. Our Charity today is the Soldiers Charity – a longstanding partnership for the track and a timely reminder this week of how much we owe our Armed Services. Thank you to all Owners who have brought horses here today – the continuing support of Owners and Trainers who have kept faith with Cartmel over the past two years is hugely appreciated All that is left to say – enjoy the magic of our restored freedom and a race-day at Cartmel.

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving. The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:
Alcohol & Substance Abuse
Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink. Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many. So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits. Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.
Slips, Trips, Falls
The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days. The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee. Many of these incidents involve children aged under five years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.
Fences, Walls & Barriers
The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into specific areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment. Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.
Trees
The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks. However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning. While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland.
Water
Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure. For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet. Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.
Horses
Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically.
Vehicle Movement
Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.
Barbecues
Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished. No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse. Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts.
Children
There are usually lots of children at Cartmel races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask all children to be appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above.

WEIGHTWATCHER
The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 3.25 FRANCE DE REVE (won off 111 down 11lb to 100); 4.35 MY RENAISSANCE (won off 102 down 13lb to 89); TOKARAMORE (won off 102 down 13lb to 89); ARDERA CROSS (won off 125 down 23lb to 102); 5.15 GOING MOBILE (won off 95 down 3lb to 92); YOUNG TURK (won off 120 down 10lb to 110); 5.50 BEENO (won off 126 down 14lb to 112); 6.20 GOLDEN TOWN (won off 116 down 4lb to 112).
CLASSY TIPS
The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race: 4.35 ARDERA CROSS (down 2 grades); 6.20 GOLDEN TOWN (down 2 grades). NOTE: ALL STATISTICS ARE UP TO AND INCLUDING 26TH AUGUST.
RACE 1 GLADIATORIAL comes over from Ireland and could go close if repeating his Downpatrick second to Buddy Rich. He stays further and may well make his own running here but could be good enough to do so and come home alone. Ibbenburen battled on well to get up at Bangor last time and could well get involved in the finish, leaving Toutatis as the alternative to come home third with a clear round and any improvement. WIN: GLADIATORIAL DANGER: IBBENBUREN RACE 2 The Sam England/Jonathan England combination took this with Oksana when it was last run in 2019 and could go close again with Liffeydale Dreamer after her recent course efforts including a win in June and a second last month. She is up 3lb for that latest run seems likely to get close to CATCHMEIFYOUCAN, who was her conqueror here in July and meets her on 1b worse terms. Calliope may be the one to follow them home. WIN: CATCHMEIFYOUCAN DANGER: LIFFEYDALE DREAMER RACE 3 An interesting contest despite just the three runners, and one where it seems likely that ROOSTER COGBURN will take them along from the start and try to repel all challengers. He did fall at the first last time and needs to brush up on his jumping, but may well get the run of the race. Onthefrontfoot seems his biggest rival but has to give over a stone away, while Check My Pulse needs to improve, but tries cheekpieces for the first time. WIN: ROOSTER COGBURN DANGER: ONTHEFRONTFOOT RACE 4 MORE BUCK’S gave a good account over 2m7f when second at Market Rasen and, despite being raised 3lb for that effort, the 11-year-old gets the nod to land the spoils. The handicapper has continued to loosen his grip on Ardera Cross and he merits the utmost respect off 12lb below his last winning mark. Tokaramore has been dropped 2lb for his recent effort when fourth at this venue and the step back in trip could yield improvement. WIN: MORE BUCK’S DANGER: ARDERA CROSS RACE 5 BREAKING THE ICE arrives in a rich vein of form and it will take a useful performance to stop him recording a third successive victory, despite being raised a further 9lb for his latest success. Go On Chez claimed a first win under Rules at Uttoxeter last month and he merits plenty of respect off 11lb higher, while Scoop The Pot cannot be dismissed off the same mark as his most recent outing. WIN: BREAKING THE ICE
DANGER: GO ON CHEZ
RACE 6 ALQAMAR is a progressive hurdler on an upward trajectory and it may prove hard to stop him securing his four-timer despite carrying top weight. Ingleby Hollow ran a cracker at Perth last time on his first run for Rebecca Menzies and a repeat performance could see him involved, while Finisk River has improved in his last two starts and could be a player if he can take another step forward. WIN: ALQAMAR
DANGER: INGLEBY HOLLOW
RACE 7 Miraculous Getaway showed some promise on his latest run and he could be well treated as he makes his handicap debut. Golden Town ran a decent race at Perth last time and he could be more competitive at this level, but he will need to reverse the form with FRIGHTENED RABBIT, who beat him by seven lengths when the pair met at this venue in June and that rival may be the one to beat in this contest. WIN: FRIGHTENED RABBIT DANGER: MIRACULOUS GETAWAY toteplacepot suggestions: : (1) 1 & 2 (2) 1 & 2 (3) 1 & 2 (4) 2 & 6 (5) 6 & 8 (6) 1 & 2
JOCKEYS’ & TRAINERS’ CHALLENGES 2021 *STANDINGS AS OF BEFORE RACING ON MONDAY 19TH JULY
Barrow-born Charlotte Jones stands on the brink of history with just two days of the season to go at Cartmel. Since the inception of the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge in 2007, the competition has been won by two champion jockeys and one Grand National-winning jockey, but it has never been won by a female jockey or by a conditional jockey. Charlotte Jones

But going into the August Bank Holiday fixture, which will see this year’s Jockeys’ Challenge play out its final chapter for 2021, Charlotte is poised to end both those omissions in one fell swoop. After a fantastic season at the course, which has seen her ride an astonishing eight winners over the seven racing days so far, she holds a healthy nine points lead over nearest challenger Sean Quinlan, with the five-times Challenge winner Brian Hughes a further two points away in third. They are certain to provide stiff opposition for Charlotte over the next couple of days. Sean Quinlan is riding as well as he has ever done, while Brian Hughes is a growing threat as he is gaining momentum after a quiet start to his Cartmel campaign. Over the past 14 years Hughes, the 2019 champion jockey has averaged 4.5 winners a year at Cartmel and with just three so far, will expect to add to his tally over the next two days. Points are awarded on the basis of three for a winner, two for a second and one for a third.
James Moffatt, who trains just a stone’s throw from Cartmel racecourse, is poised to reclaim the Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge crown as the competition moves into its final two days.

Since the competition began a decade ago, the Andrea Robinson Memorial Trophy has been won by only two trainers. Donald McCain has won seven titles, including the first five years, with his amazing run interrupted by James Moffatt in a three year span which ended in 2017. This season, however, Moffatt has dominated from the start and going into the closing stages looks to have an unassailable 12 points lead over another popular Cartmel trainer Dianne Sayer. Twelve points is the equivalent of four winners as points are awarded on the basis of three for a winner, two for a second and one for a third. Mrs Sayer, who is nearly always in the shake-up for the title, does have a strong hand to play this weekend, but it does look a big ask to pull back such a deficit over two days. Sam England is currently third, two points behind Dianne Sayer. Perennial winner Donald McCain has had a disappointing Cartmel campaign by his usual high standards and has just 11 points, leaving him a massive 21 behind the leader which is surely too big a gap for even him to pull back. As well as the Andrea Robinson Memorial Trophy, the winner also gets a break for two to visit the cellars of Cartmel’s champagne partner Louis Roederer in France.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place. 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights. 6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

BLESSING OF THE HORSE
Do join us on Sunday 29th August at 10.30am in The Priory for Steeplechase Sunday. This is a short service that celebrates jump racing and the beauty of the landscape that is the back drop to Cartmel Races. The exercising of horses dates back to when The Priory was a monastery and we celebrate that continuing today. We also welcome our local trainer Jimmy Moffat who will bring one of his race horses to the driveway as we conclude our service outside. It is a truly blessed spectacle. You are most welcome. 29

IN MEMORY OF HARRY THE HAT HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE We, as a whole team were privileged to share our race days with Harry. Harry had been present with his hats at Cartmel for many years, along with many other tracks. It was always great to see him pull up in his van and come in to the office for a catch-up, usually with a big hug for everyone! He became synonymous with race days and we all got a great deal on a hat – it wasn’t unusual for the whole team to end up with a very similar hat! When I first arrived at Carlisle racecourse many moons ago, Harry’s charm and care were very welcome and it was lovely to see him again here in Cartmel. He will be sorely missed by the whole team and we are humbled to dedicate a race in his memory today. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends. Geraldine

CENGIZ SADIK 22.2.70 – 25.6.06
Cengiz Sadik Memorial Race 28th August 2021 This year is the 15th anniversary of my son Cengiz’s passing. Cengiz was the king pin of my small family racing operation. During 26 years of training in Ireland and England we had our share of winners. Cengiz loved Cartmel and rarely missed a meeting, usually coming over from our base in Worcestershire and staying overnight with our horses at the racecourse. Our most famous horse to win there was Green Go, which he purchased for me from the Czech Republic in 2002. I was dubious whether the horse being a maiden sprinter would stay 2 miles over hurdles, he assured me he would stay. He brought Green Go to Cartmel for the bank holiday meeting in 2003 and won the 2 mile 5 Beginners Chase on Saturday by 25 lengths. Against my wishes, he twisted my arm to run him again on Monday in the 3 mile 2 Handicap Chase. I said to him “you are pushing your luck running him over a marathon distance” he said “not only will he stay the distance Dad, he will win!” So he stayed over and run Green Go on Monday. After a night out on Sunday night, Cengiz was found in Green Go’s stable feeding him by hand at 1am. He told his mystified friends that Green Go was off his food and he would not win unless he ate his food. As history will show Green Go won again on Monday by 25 lengths. I sponsored the race in his memory the year he died in 2006. I have had a runner in the race for the last 14 years and won it myself in 2008 with Desert Tommy, by 25 lengths amid floods of tears from myself and my wife. I hope to have a runner this year, all being well. Cartmel has become a place of pilgrimage for me with so many memories of the past and present. I feel always welcomed here and thank Cartmel for keeping my son’s race going for so many years. The enclosed picture of Cengiz with a horse called My True Romance was taken at Cartmel Racecourse stables on 27th May 2006 the day the horse won. This was Cengiz’s very last photo, his very last runner and his very last winner. Sadly, he took his own life the following month due to the breakdown of his marriage and inability to see his 2 young sons who are now aged 20 and 21.

VETERINARY CARE FOR HORSES Racegoers should be aware that the Cartmel Veterinary Team will arrange for the erection of screens on any occasion where they believe it to be in the interest of a horses’ welfare. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.
MEETING POINTS Meeting Points are located at the Information booths both within the Paddock and Course enclosures. The Meeting Points are clearly signed with large “Meeting Point” banners. If you need to meet up with friends and family, please use these areas as points of reference. 41

Of the opposition, Golden Town is one to note dropping in grade, while it’s probably worth forgiving Frightened Rabbit a poor run on the level last time. 1-2-3: 1.FIRST QUEST (USA) 2.GOLDEN TOWN (IRE) 3.FRIGHTENED RABBIT (USA) FREE form for all British and Irish meetings is available online every day at timeform.com/free
CUSTOMER NOTICES The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or expel any person from the racecourse, without assigning a reason for so doing. It does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to persons or to their property.
KEEP CARTMEL CLEAN At Cartmel Racecourse we are putting out a plea to all racegoers to HELP us maintain the grounds and keep them as litter free as possible. We are now able to recycle 100% of your waste through our contractor Wicks Waste Services. Please help us by bagging up your litter. You may place it in one of the many large bins that we have provided in each enclosure or of course take it home with you.
7 Please do not put used BBQs or BBQ embers in the plastic bins –
please ensure that they are fully extinguished and then deposited in a metal bin (which look like large-cube-shaped cages).
If in doubt, ask a steward. Thank you for your help. www.cartmel-racecourse.co.uk 46
