WELCOME In case you were not with us on Saturday, please accept our warmest welcome and our thanks for being with us today, our final fixture for 2021. Although, over the period of the pandemic, we put on racing, first behind closed doors and later with very limited attendance, you were sorely missed by all of us at Cartmel. Welcome back! We were touched by and deeply grateful for the support we received from Owners and Trainers over the long and painful months of lockdown; A year without racing at Cartmel would have been both sad and extremely damaging. Today also marks a special partnership with The Calvert Trust, who are here onsite raising much-needed funds for their amazing centre; may I suggest you take the time, if you can, to have a look at what they do. Everyone is asking who will be victorious as top Jockey and Trainer for Cartmel this year? As I write this, it seems like Charlotte Jones and James Moffatt are un-stoppable; whatever happens, may they come home safely. I must also thank all our sponsors today – without your continued support we would not be able to continue to invest in our race programme and facilities for our racing participants. Keep an eye out for your emails throughout September and October, as we announce the 2022 Fixture List and release our early tickets on sale. WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK PADDOCK ENCLOSURE The Louis Roederer Restaurant The Louis Roederer Restaurant is located on the first floor of the Grandstand (within the Paddock Enclosure) and boasts panoramic views of the racecourse, finishing line and the parade ring. It has a private viewing balcony and access to the front steps of the Grandstand… perfect for enjoying a day’s racing in style! Racegoers can enjoy a delicious three course a la carte meal, designed by our exclusive caterers, Campbell & Rowley. Also included in the package are drinks (house wine, beer and soft drinks), afternoon tea, Paddock admission and parking. COURSE ENCLOSURE • Unsworth’s Yard and Winster Valley provide an excellent selection of locally brewed real ales, there is also a William Hill betting shop adjacent to the main Course Side Bar. Cocktails and coffee are provided all blended in with an array of traders to provide that magical Cartmel experience. • Taylor’s Funfair is located in the Course Enclosure, they have provided endless hours of thrills and fun for all ages at Cartmel for many seasons and we are delighted to welcome them back. • There is a selection of food offers to be found on the Course Side from traditional hearty racing fayre to exquisite Indian cuisine and of course there are sweets and candyﬂoss for the children.

ENJOY THE RACES IN SAFETY A day at Cartmel Racecourse should be great fun for everyone; nobody wants an injury or an incident to spoil their day. So, when push comes to shove, we need to make sure that there isn’t any pushing or shoving. The racecourse team prepares carefully for each event and we take every precaution to ensure that the site is as safe as is practical. However, we also need some help from you – to take responsibility for your own safety and to respect the safety and comfort of those around you. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief list of precautions that we’d like all visitors to consider:

Alcohol & Substance Abuse

Fortunately very few accidents occur at Cartmel Racecourse, but those that do are most likely to be relatively minor incidents involving someone who has had too much to drink. Quite simply: you’ll be safer if you drink less alcohol. On the rare occasion that we receive a customer complaint, it’s quite likely to be linked to the behaviour of someone who’s had one too many. So please drink responsibly and encourage your friends to stay within their limits. Any incident involving substance abuse will be dealt with by Cumbria Police.

Slips, Trips, Falls

The most common cause for a visit to our medical tent is sunstroke… Okay, that’s only on hot days. The most common cause, on a normal day, is a grazed knee. Many of these incidents involve children aged under ﬁve years old or adults that have had one drink too many (see previous point about alcohol). Customers are reminded that the natural parkland, that forms the racecourse, includes many uneven surfaces which may become slippery in wet conditions. Please take care of yourselves and mind where you walk. Don’t try to run faster than your legs can go, even if you think your bookmaker might be packing away for the day.

Fences, Walls & Barriers

The fences, walls and temporary barriers located on the racecourse are intended to segregate people into speciﬁc areas. This may include segregating people from horses or people from sensitive or hazardous equipment. Please do not attempt to climb over, sit on or stand on any barriers – regardless of whether they appear to be permanent or temporary features – they are not designed to take a person’s weight.

Trees

The scenery at the racecourse is enhanced by beautiful trees, including some very old oaks. However, despite clichés such as ‘strong as an oak’ it should be noted that all trees are capable of shedding branches with little warning. While we inspect all the trees on the racecourse annually, we recommend that you do not sit beneath the branches. We especially ask that neither children, nor adults, swing or climb on the branches of trees within the parkland.

Water

Children are naturally attracted by the water in the beck that meanders through the Paddock Enclosure. For reasons that should be obvious, we recommend that children are supervised at all times. We also recommend that anyone paddling in the beck wears shoes or boots to protect their feet. Animals use the beck upstream (and downstream), so please do not use the beck for washing up your picnic utensils, for drinking or for cleaning your hands.

Horses

Horses are big and run very fast; hopefully yours will run fastest of all. Please pay attention when in close proximity to the horses: stay on the public side of any barriers (close to the track or horse walk areas) and do not sit on or lean over barriers near to the horses. The running rails are designed to encourage the horses to stay on the track – but they will not withstand a horse’s weight if they hit them, nor a jockey’s if he is thrown over them – so be prepared to move if a horse is behaving erratically.

Vehicle Movement

Be aware of moving vehicles at all times. If you are driving a vehicle, please pay special attention to pedestrians.

Barbecues

Every year the first aid team will treat at least one person with burnt fingers and we will be required to extinguish at least one fire in a wheelie bin. If you intend to bring a barbecue, please ensure that you handle it safely, take care not to scorch the grass and dispose of it in a metal bin – only when it is fully extinguished. No gas barbecues or gas canisters are permitted on the racecourse. Please extinguish all BBQs 20 minutes before racing starts.

Children

There are usually lots of children at Cartmel races. Although we don’t consider them to be particularly dangerous, we do ask all children to be appropriately supervised by a responsible adult – who should be particularly mindful of all the considerations above.

A flat sharp track only 1m 1f in circumference, with six fences per circuit. The run-in is about half a mile which makes it the longest of any National Hunt courses in Britain.

RACE 1 Irish raider BARDENSTOWN LAD has displayed useful form thus far and appears the one to beat. The Black Sam Bellamy gelding, a point-to-point winner, readily landed a bumper at Tipperary in the spring before scoring on his hurdling debut at Wexford last month. Fairlawn Flyer was not disgraced on his hurdles bow at Bangor a fortnight ago but needs to improve, while Celestial Sky showed little in two starts in Ireland and has work to do now starting out for Rebecca Menzies WIN: BARDENSTOWN LAD DANGER: FAIRLAWN FLYER RACE 2 A competitive event in which the unexposed EYEOFTHESCORPION is favoured, having shown a good attitude when scoring at Bangor on his reappearance last month. The seven-year-old should prove effective at this trip and may prove too strong for Native Fighter, who looked set to benefit from a step up in distance on his latest outing, while Jelski won in good style at this track on his most recent run and is also worth noting. WIN: EYEOFTHESCORPION DANGER: NATIVE FIGHTER RACE 3 The Dan Skelton-trained HATCHER has shown progressive form over fences this year, winning three times, and the style of his latest success at Stratford suggested that he may be capable of continuing his improvement. Dino Velvet possibly found his latest run coming too soon after posting an impressive win at Uttoxeter and it would be no surprise to see him produce a much bolder showing on this occasion, while Ming Dynasty is in excellent form and can also feature.. WIN: HATCHER DANGER: DINO VELVET RACE 4 SUB LIEUTENANT performed with credit on a couple of occasion at Ascot before completing the course when tackling the Grand National on his most recent outing. The handicapper has given him a chance and he could potentially outclass his rivals. The 12-year-old does face a stiff task, though, with all three of his rivals arriving in winning form and the main threats are likely to be Fred The Foot, on his handicap debut over fences, and Get Out The Gate. WIN: SUB LIEUTENANT DANGER: FRED THE FOOT RACE 5 PINK EYED PEDRO was no match for an easy winner at Worcester on his latest outing and this appears to be the ideal opportunity for the 10-year-old to gain a deserved success after a string of consistent efforts since the spring. Solar Impulse gained compensation for his Market Rasen fall, when looking the likely winner, at Perth last month and he commands respect along with Minella Trump, who also scored at Perth in a two-runner affair. WIN: PINK EYED PEDRO DANGER: SOLAR IMPULSE RACE 6 SACRE PIERRE made a winning start to his career at Uttoxeter last month and Donald McCain’s gelding is entitled to have learnt plenty from that experience. He is capable of defying a penalty on this occasion at the expense of Forever Forward, who displayed ability on the Flat when with Clive Cox, and The Bravest, who finished fourth on his first attempt over timber at Market Rasen. WIN: SACRE PIERRE DANGER: FOREVER FORWARD RACE 7 KEEPER CHRIS has improved with each outing over hurdles and his recent second at Market Rasen suggested he would be of interest now making his handicap debut. Decoration Of War has been knocking on the door on his latest outings and the six-year-old is likely to enter calculations once again, while others for the shortlist include Permission Granted and Watching Brief. Charlotte Jones continued her sensational form at Cartmel season with a superb ride on Alqamar to win the Fitzdares Club Cartmel Cup on Saturday after a terriﬁc dual with Ingleby Hollow and the impressive Sean Quinlan. It was Charlotte’s ninth winner at Cartmel this season and captured the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge in microcosm as, for the most part, it has been a head-to-head between Charlotte and Sean Quinlan at the top of the table.

However, going into the final day, it is five-times Jockeys Challenge winner Brian Hughes who represents the last remaining threat to Charlotte becoming the first female and the first conditional to claim the prize since its inception in 2008. To deny her, Brian Hughes will have to complete a four-timer this afternoon and Charlotte have nothing more than one third place, a combination of circumstances that looks highly improbable though not impossible. Since Richie McGrath became the first winner of the Cartmel Jockeys Challenge, only Graham Lee, Jason Maguire, Brian Hughes and Richard Johnson have taken the title, so it is an exclusive club Charlotte is on the brink of joining. With all final placings up for grabs , she will be counting no chickens, but going out to grab that 10th win at the track this season will be uppermost in her mind to clinch the title in style. A personal record tenth winner at Cartmel this year, when Alqamar gave him a fifth victory in Saturday’s Fitzdares Club Cartmel Cup, means that local trainer James Moffatt has already reclaimed the Cartmel Trainers’ Challenge crown before today’s final meeting. It has been a fantastic summer for James, who has been dominant for most of the year having led the Trainers Challenge table virtually the whole season. Only after day two of the May meeting, when Jennie Candlish and Laura Morgan briefly led, has his name not been on top. And as the competition enters its final day James’s 10-point lead is impregnable as nearest challenger Dianne Sayer, who was also among the winners on Saturday with Calliope taking the Fitzdares Club Is The Best Club In London Mares Handicap Hurdle, only has one runner today. So James becomes the champion again for the first time since 2017 and takes his fourth Trainers Challenge title. Since the inception of the competition in 2010, only James Moffatt and seven times winner Donald McCain have got their hands on the Andrea Robinson Memorial Trophy. All that remains to be decided is who will finish third as Mrs Sayer, who is never far away in the race for this title is guaranteed second spot and it seems to lie between Sam England, Jennie Candlish, Donald McCain and Rebecca Menzies. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Peter Beaumont August 2nd 1934 to March 30th 2020

Sadly, just 11 days into the first lockdown of the Covid19 pandemic, Gold Cup winning trainer and supporter of Cartmel, Peter Beaumont, passed away in his sleep aged 85years. Born on August 2nd 1934, Peter was brought up in Ripley near Harrogate by Father Alfie and Mother Vera, brother of Pat and the late John Beaumont. Having grown up as a child during wartime, he remembered his father’s beloved hunters being taken away to war, and the hardships that were felt throughout the land, and of course in the farming,hunting and point to point community in which they lived. The qualities of hard work, honesty, and a certain Yorkshire stoicism were learnt then, and were to mark Peter out throughout his lifetime. Happy days in the Bramham Moor Pony Club, along with an impressive trophy haul at Ripley Show among many other shows and hunter trials were then inevitably followed by hunting and point to pointing. Horses such as Rastus and The White Horse were to provide some great wins for the father/son, trainer/jockey partnership, until a bad fall in his early twenties put an early end to Peters aspirations to be a top amateur jockey. However he had, by this time, met his sweetheart and soon to be wife, Margaret Rose Revill. They met through Knaresborough Young Farmers Club, and friends such as Willie and Frances Houseman, John and Judy Elliot, sister Pat and her late husband John, were just a few of the many friendships which lasted through their lifetimes. In 1968, another wonderful friend, Miss Joyce Hey, who had been taught to ride by Alfie at Ripley, bought Foulrice Farm at Brandsby in 1968 and asked Peter and Margaret to move in as tenants.

A small dairy farm was quickly established, with hunter liveries, point to pointers and young horses sent for Peters’ kind and sympathetic handling and expert horsemanship. Long hours and hard work by both Peter and Margaret, whilst bringing up their young family, paid off with increasing success in the Point to Point field, with Sporting Luck being the first of several star horses to put Peters name on the map. More boxes were built, and more horses arrived, until, at the behest of owners Josie Knowles and Judy Plummer, a trainers licence was taken out in 1986. Their homebred horse, JJHenry, was the first horse to make Peter’s name under NH rules winning 6 Novice ‘Chases and 11 Chases in total, including the 1991 John Hughes Memorial Trophy (now the Topham Trophy) at Aintree. He was ridden to all his victories by Peter’s daughter Anthea, the Clerk of the Course here at Cartmel. Peter soon became known for sourcing and training a wonderful stamp of staying chaser. The best of these was the 1993 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Jodami, a horse who also won three successive Irish Gold Cups. There were winners of other illustrious races such as Young Kenny who won a Scottish Grand National, and Hussard Collonges who won the RSA Chase at Cheltenham for the Bannister family, along with lovely chasers such as Island Chief, Niki Dee, Bobby Grant, to name but a few, who placed Peters name on the role of honour for such as the Midlands Grand National, Tommy Whittle ‘Chase, Peter Marsh ‘Chase, Mandarin etc. With just a handful of select horses that he purchased astutely and brought along with a special brand of patience and kindness, he established himself in the top rung of NH trainers, and remains the last Northern trainer to have trained both a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and the winner of the RSA. Peter was a farmer and trainer, stockman and horseman. He truly was the kindest of men, a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Decent, modest and mindful of others he was a wonderful father to Stuart and Anthea, and a fantastic Grandfather to Henry. He gathered friends everywhere he went, and had time for everyone. Sadly his genial smile and infectious twinkle is no longer with us, but the numerous happy tales of time spent with Peter ensures his legacy will last for many years to come.

This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery. REGULATIONS AND NOTICES GENERAL - All tickets, badges and other forms of entry to the racecourse are issued strictly subject to the Racecourse’s standard conditions of entry from time to time. Copies are available from the racecourse office. Please note the details below are only an abbreviation and are for guidance only. 1. The Company shall not be liable to the racegoer for any failure or omission or breach caused by an event or events beyond the control of the Company such as but not limited to war, civil disturbance, order of a Government Ministry or department or public authority, fire, flood, natural catastrophe, royal demise, labour dispute, lock-out, withdrawal of labour or breakdown or interruption of services or transport (public or otherwise) or death or illness of a key person. 1.1. Upon the happening of such an event the obligations of the Company and any period of time then running shall be suspended for the period of the event plus such time as may be required to resume normality. 1.2. Such an event shall not entitle the racegoer to take any steps against the Company for breach or to terminate the agreement or otherwise. 2. Any person failing to comply with instructions from a steward or police officer may be ejected from the Racecourse. 3. Please observe the designated no drinking areas. Alcoholic beverages must not be carried to or consumed in these areas. 4. Amateur photography is accepted but only without flash equipment. 5. i) No person present on the racecourse may use any device, technology or communication system to capture, record, store, broadcast, transmit, make available or otherwise disseminate any still (including photographic), audio, visual, audio-visual coverage or record of, or any data available at the racecourse relating to, any race or any fixture generally at the racecourse or any other British racecourse. ii) Flags, banners and other articles and any behaviour such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting which may constitute an annoyance to spectators or distract or frighten the horses are prohibited. 6. Transfers between enclosures may be possible on the day, subject to availability. 7. Lost or stolen badges will not be replaced. 8. Subject to the provisions of clause 1 which shall prevail over this clause, in the event of abandonment before racing, or up to the “Weighed-In” of the first race there will be a full refund of badge and car parking costs. In the event of abandonment after the “Weighed-In” of the first race up to the “Weighed In” of the third race there will be a 50% refund of badge and car parking costs. In the event of abandonment thereafter there will be no refunds. No cash refunds to be paid on the day. All refunds to be administered after the meeting by post. In order to qualify for a refund the customer must follow the procedures listed below:i) Make a note of the reference numbers of all badges and car park labels(these numbers will be found on the front of each badge or label). ii) Send the badges and/or labels along with a covering letter stating the full name and address of the sender and, if different from that of sender, the full name and address of the purchaser of the badges or labels to: Refund Office, Cartmel Racecourse, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11 6QF. To be valid, requests for refunds must be received in writing one month of the abandoned raceday. The Company shall have no responsibility or liability of any nature in respect of any refund request received after that time. 9. All persons visiting the Racecourse are admitted subject to these Regulations and to the Rules of Racing. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to/or to remove from the Racecourse, in its absolute discretion and without giving any reasons, any person failing to comply with such Rules and Regulations or whose presence is, in its absolute discretion, a source of danger or annoyance and shall have no obligatio to give any reason therefore. 10. The Company shall in no circumstances be liable for any loss, damage, cost or expense or any consequential or indirect loss or damage of any kind. Surfaces underfoot may be uneven or slippery. Please take care as the racecourse will not accept any liability for slips or trips within the park. 11. BARBECUES - The racecourse reserves the right to extinguish barbeques if they effect or potentially effect racing. 12. PARKING - For health and safety reasons, all vehicles should park as requested by the attendants. In the interest of viewing, designated areas have been reserved for camper vans and similar vehicles. 13. BETTING RING MANAGER - The Betting Ring Manager will be available in each enclosure to assist in any betting dispute. 14. UNAUTHORISED BOOKMAKING - It is a condition of entry that only individuals possessing a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets. Anyone contravening this condition will be evicted. 15. PRIZE MONEY - The Horserace Betting Levy Board General Prize Fund scheme provides for the inclusion of £217,800 at this Racecourse in 2020. 16. We shall be entitled to make reasonable changes to these terms and conditions from time to time.
