RACE NIGHT FEATURING HUNTER CHASE RACING FRIDAY 30 APRIL 2021

Hazel Hill, winner of the 2019 Mixed Open Gold Cup Final Hunters’ Chase, ridden by Alex Edwards and trained by Philip Rowley

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to our season finale which features seven exciting Hunter Chases this evening. It is always a wonderful evening, and we are looking forward to some fantastic racing. As we all know, racing is an incredibly close community and earlier this month we lost one of our own. On April 26th it was announced that amateur jockey, Lorna Brooke had tragically passed away following a fall on the 8th April. Popular with fellow amateurs and professional jockeys alike, tonight we honour Lorna with a race in her memory - The Lorna Brooke Open Hunters’ Steeple Chase the penultimate race on our card at 7.45pm. We hope you will join us for a minutes silence ahead of this race in tribute to Lorna. A celebration of Lorna’s life will also be held on Monday 24th May at Ludlow Racecourse, by kind permission of the directors. It is hoped that COVID-19 restrictions will allow Lorna’s many friends and colleagues from within racing to attend. The thoughts of everyone at The Jockey Club and Cheltenham Racecourse are with Lorna’s family, friends and weighing room colleagues. We would like to thank you all for your support over the past 12 months. It has been a season like no other but we have been treated to unforgettable moments from Coole Cody landing the Paddy Power Gold Cup in fine style back in November, to Rachael Blackmore and Henry de Bromhead stealing the show during The Festival supporting WellChild. While the racing has put on a fantastic show, we are very much looking forward to welcoming you all back on course next season and are ready to hear that famous Cheltenham roar once more. As ever, our thanks go to today’s sponsors; Visit Cheltenham, KTDA, JRL Group and Racing TV. Your continued support this year has been greatly appreciated and we hope you enjoy all the action this evening. You can keep up with all the racing from 5pm live on Racing TV. We are looking forward to seeing you all soon, and if you wish to be back on course with us for The Festival 2022 we recommend that you buy your tickets soon to make the most of the best price. You can do so on our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/cheltenham. Take care, and we look forward to hopefully seeing you back here at The Showcase meeting on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd October. LORNA BROOKE A TRIBUTE

Jump Racing’s tight-knit community has united in grief, praise and tribute to Lorna Brooke this month, the amateur rider who tragically passed away at the age of 37. Hunter Chase Evening - the final fixture of Cheltenham’s season before the Home of Jump Racing takes a break for the summer months - traditionally takes place with something of an end of term, party-like atmosphere. Tonight we join her family, friends, fellow jockeys, trainers and owners in remembering Lorna, a dedicated, passionate and lifelong supporter of our sport. Lorna’s death, which was announced on April 26th, was a result of a spinal injury sustained at Taunton Racecourse on April 8th, having fallen from her mount Orchestrated, owned and trained by her mother Lady Susan Brooke. Jump racing’s origins lie in the hunting field and celebrate the achievements of those who ride purely for pleasure and a sense of sportsmanship. Lorna truly fitted into that category, participating not for gain but fuelled by the Corinthian spirit which lies at the heart of every Jump jockey, professional or amateur. That is not to say Lorna was not fiercely competitive on the track. In November 2015, Fairyhouse Racecourse staged the Today FM Ladies Handicap Chase – the first race ever staged in Ireland solely for female jockeys. With 12 runners set to go to post, there had been issues in finding the required number of female jockeys. Rising to the challenge, Lorna travelled over from England to take the mount on 25-1 outsider Moonlone Lane. Lining up against the likes of established and renowned female jockeys Katie Walsh, Lizzie Kelly, Nina Carberry and Rachael Blackmore, Lorna and Moonlone Lane looked to have little chance – on paper at least. Not even the legendary Sir AP McCoy and 2019-20 Champion Jockey Brian Hughes had managed to succeed on the gelding, who remained a maiden at the time. However, with Lorna in the saddle something clicked. The duo raced prominently throughout and went on to gain a decisive and deserved two and a half length victory. Proving it was no fluke, the pair teamed up again for their next outing the following month, promptly obliging by three lengths in a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh. Popular with fellow amateurs and professional jockeys alike, Lorna was a regular at our Hunter Chase Evening over the years - her best finish as runner-up on The General Lee in the 2011 Champion Hunters’ Chase. Tonight we honour Lorna with a race in her memory - The Lorna Brooke Open Hunters’ Steeple Chase (Class 4), the penultimate race on our card at 7.45pm.

PLAY SMARTER

For all that he failed to put his best foot forward at Doncaster last time, CAPTAIN CATTISTOCK looks the way to go. He is taking a step into the unknown trip-wise, but the same is true for many of these and his near miss over 27.7f at Fontwell last season suggests that stamina won’t be an issue. Kilkishen has form over marathon trips (fourth in the 2019 Eider) and is next best ahead of Ennistown.
