WELCOME TO
Hello and a very warm welcome to Cheltenham Racecourse for our first fixture of the 2024/25 season – The Showcase!
The long summer wait is finally over, and we’re thrilled to welcome you back to Cheltenham Racecourse. For fans and participants alike, returning here feels like coming home, with excitement and anticipation off the scale as we kick off another thrilling season of Jump Racing
As many of you may have noticed, as part of our ongoing commitment to delivering the best racing experience, we’ve made several key updates to Cheltenham and the Cheltenham Festival over the summer These changes focus on ensuring the racing over the four days is as competitive as ever and our customers have the best experience possible while on our racecourse. Our team have worked hard to ensure that our racegoers have value throughout the day from freezing ticket prices to meal deals on course To learn more about these updates, please visit our website
Today’s card features seven fiercely competitive races, headlined by the Sky Bet Novices’ Hurdle, one of the most exciting early-season contests. Last year, this race was won by the Neil King-trained Lookaway, setting the stage for a fantastic season ahead. Gavin Cromwell also found success at The Showcase, with My Mate Mozzie triumphing in the squareintheair.com Novices’ Steeple Chase, and Encanto Bruno in the TrustATrader Novices’ Hurdle—both key victories that launched a successful 2023/24 campaign for the Irish trainer at the Home of Jump Racing.
In addition to the racing, Cheltenham will pay tribute to award-winning writer and festival regular Alastair Down today when the press room is officially renamed in his honour on the opening day of the Showcase meeting. Down is a Cheltenham devotee, having attended every festival since the age of 19, including while working for The Sporting Life and subsequently with the Racing Post
We also have plenty of live entertainment to enjoy, so don’t miss the buzz of the beginning—it’s where the journey starts for the season We’re also excited to welcome GBR’s Jockey Gym in the Plaza. Ever wondered if you’ve got what it takes to be a jockey? Come along and put your skills to the test.
We’re delighted to have you with us as we mark the start of what promises to be an unforgettable season at the Home of Jump Racing.
Ian Renton Martin St Quinton Managing Director Chairman
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Saturday 26th October
THE SHOWCASE SATURDAY
The fantastic seven race card whets the appetite for the season ahead as equine and human stars start their campaign with the hopes and dreams of returning to the Home of Jump Racing’s scared winners’ enclosure throughout the season.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

PLAY SMARTER
A disappointing turnout from British-trained runners but PATH D’OROUX held his form well back in the spring so, provided he’s ready to roll, this looks a good opening for Gavin Cromwell’s 7-y-o to open his account over the larger obstacles. The main danger may emerge from San Salvador, who is progressive and arrives chasing a quick-fire hat-trick, while Shecouldbeanything, who is declared to run at Clonmel on Thursday, would be a leading player if lining up, too.

CALICO has dipped to 1lb lower than when second over C&D on last year’s reappearance and might prove the answer to this useful handicap Last year’s winner Dancing On My Own should give it another good shot, while Matata looks feasibly treated on the pick of last season’s novice form.

A fascinating Grade 2 event. GALE MAHLER has carried all before her thus far and is impossible to side against in her bid to go 5-5 over hurdles on the back of an impressive Galway listed victory Both Valgrand (second choice) and Brave Knight are with top yards and also unbeaten in this sphere so should ensure Adrian Keatley’s likeable mare doesn’t have things all her own way.
Pioneering equine vision research showed the clarity of jumps could be improved by changing markers from orange to white. So that’s what we did. horsepwr.co.uk

CEANNDANA arrives on a steep upward curve and probably has even more to offer, so he takes marginal preference over Jacks Parrot, who is also on the up but doesn’t have the benefit of a recent run. Are U Wise To That is better than a mark of 127 on his day and merits respect coming back fresh.

PLAY SMARTER
An ultra-competitive finale. FIRECELY PROUD did well as a novice hurdler last season and ran creditably in a big-field handicap at Sandown on his final outing, especially considering he was left with a bittoo muchto do, so he’s an appealing candidate onthis returnto actionwith his riderable to claim 10lb against his rivals. Jilaijone has been shown some leniency bythe assessor and can go on well on his reappearance, with hat-trick seeker Here Comes Georgie also of firm interest.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
