CRYSTAL CUP

The Crystal Cup European Cross Country Challenge brings together the finest international horses and riders to reward the most successful stable in cross country steeple chasing.

The 12 race series, with over €850,000 in prize money, is hosted by many of Europe’s premier racecourses, over unique combinations of hedges, banks, ditches and timber The Challenge began in late August at a packed Waregem Racecourse in Belgium, whilst the final race at Lion d’Angers in late May provides a fittingly thrilling result following races in France and visits to Poland, Italy, Cheltenham, Ireland and to Czechia for the Velka Pardubika.

Points are awarded from 6 down to 1 for the first six places in any race, doubled if running outside your country of origin to incentivize foreign participation, with bonuses worth €50,000 to the first and second placed owner and trainer.

The leaderboard up to this 7th leg at Cheltenham today has a suitably international feel:

Fellow Irish raiderStumptown has age on his side and is feared most in his bid for a hat-trick of cross country events, with in-form maiden chaser Mister Coffey appealing as the pick of the home challengers. PLAY SMARTER

The manner in which DOYEN QUEST overcame a significant early blunder here the previous month suggests a 10lb higher mark may not be enough to prevent him from going in again, not least as he’s totally unexposed as a stayer. Long Draw and Might I head up the opposition in a race that is likely to make for strong form.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
