The Stage Is Set 7 Races, 7 Trials

WELCOME TO

Welcome to Cheltenham Racecourse for Festival Trials Day.

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to Festival Trials on my first race meeting in charge, having been appointed as the new CEO of Cheltenham Racecourse on January 1st. Having been a regular racegoer to Cheltenham over many years, it will be a very different experience to be at work, as opposed to enjoying this incredible racecourse and the opportunity to watch the best jumps horses in the world socially Following a very successful New Year’s Day meeting, with 33,000 racegoers attending, today builds on the excitement as we move to towards The Festival, which is now only 45 days away All of the Jockey Club team are determined and focused on delivering the very best raceday we can for you.

The racing today is of great quality and should provide some intriguing contests and signposts to The Festival itself From a personal perspective, I am very excited to see Constitution Hill back at Cheltenham for the first time since March 2023 and I will be watching the Betfair Cotswold Chase with keen interest as L’Homme Presse looks to add another victory to his CV From a local perspective Crambo, trained by Fergal O’Brien at Ravenswell also looks one to watch in the Betfair Cleeve Hurdle All in all, it looks a great day of racing I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported today’s meeting: Betfair, JCB, Timeform, Unibet, and AIS, as sponsors are such an important part of the success of our racedays.

Inevitably, our attention is also focused on The Festival in March, the best jumps meeting in the world and one of the truly iconic sporting events staged in this country. A number of improvements and enhancements have been introduced for this year and I am very confident that these can help make The Festival this year better than ever If you have yet to book, then please come and join us

Whether today is your first time to Cheltenham or you have been a regular for years, a very warm welcome and I hope you have a really enjoyable day.

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 11th March

Cheltenham Festival Day One

The Step into the magic of Champion Day, the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival, where the roar of the crowd, the thunder of hooves, and the spirit of true racing legends sets the pace of what’s to come.

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

JAGWAR is already a much better chaser than hurdler and with his Bangor win and Uttoxeter third (when better than the result) both working out very well, he’s a handicapper to keep on the right side of Masaccio doesn’t have The Jukebox Man to contend with this time and he seems sure to give it a good go, while Billytherealbigred, a stablemate of the selection, shouldn’t be ignored in receipt of a handy weight-for-age allowance.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Iroko (FR), 9-2 Ginny’s Destiny (IRE), 7-1 Imperial Saint (FR), 8-1 Moon D’Orange (FR), 9-1 Some Scope (GB), 10-1 Soul Icon (GB), 12-1 Gemirande (FR), 14-1 Il Ridoto (FR), 25-1 Grandeur d’Ame (FR), 33-1 Torn And Frayed (FR), 66-1 Happygolucky (IRE)

Plentyto considerbut IROKO’s opening mark in this sphere looks a handy one judged on the form he showed in a Grade 1 atAintree last season and he can make amends for his luckless first-fence fall at Ascot last month. Ginny’s Destiny has had excuses on both his starts this term and is another who’s on a tempting mark based on his exploits at the top level in the spring, while Imperial Saint is worth a crack at this level after his dominant all-the-way win at Aintree.

By no means a vintage renewal ofthe Cotswold Chase and L’HOMME PRESSE looks to have been found an excellent opportunity to get back to winning ways on the back of his solid third in Kempton’s King George VI Chase. Irish-challenger Gentlemansgame appeals as the main danger to Venetia Williams’ top-class chaser with 2022 victor Chantry House no forlorn hope if building on his recent C&D handicap success.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
