A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - WEDNESDAY 5 MAY 2021 WELCOME TO DAY ONE OF THE 2021 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – CITY DAY It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to Chester Racecourse and the Boodles May Festival for the start of racing in 2021. We are very much looking forward to welcoming back Owners and Trainers for the ﬁrst ﬁxture of the 2021 season. We are indebted to the support that we receive from professionals within the racing industry and the Owners and Trainers who choose to run their horses at Chester. The Boodles May Festival is an incredibly important and popular date in the racing calendar and would traditionally attract crowds of around 20,000 on each of the three days. It is of course unfortunate that we are not yet in a position where we can welcome back full crowds, but there is sure to be a special atmosphere at the racecourse across the three days and we are all counting down the days to when spectators can once again be welcomed to The Roodee. Today’s seven race card offers the traditional curtain raiser of The Stellar Group Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes, followed by the opportunity to witness contenders for the Epsom Oaks go head-to-head in the Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks and then contenders for the Epsom Derby in the Chester Vase, two races which have consistently produced Classics winners in recent years. The total prize fund for the Boodles May Festival is £755,000, highlighting Chester Racecourse’s commitment to supporting the Horsemen’s Group. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – CITY DAY HISTORY THE ALWAYS EAGERLY ANTICIPATED OPENING DAY OF THE BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION OF OUR CITY-CENTRE LOCATION AND HERITAGE WHICH SEES SOME HIGH-CLASS ACTION ON THE TRACK TO GET OUR RACING SEASON UNDERWAY. The traditional curtain raiser of the Boodles May Festival is the Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes for two-year-olds over the flying five-furlongs, which is run in honour of the mare who had a highly-successful career both on and off the track. In the 1870s Lily Agnes recorded twenty-one victories which included all six of her two-year-old starts before she landed a trio of major races: the Northumberland Plate, Doncaster Cup and the Ebor. In her second career she then went on to become one of the leading broodmares as she was the dam of the unbeaten Triple Crown-winner Ormonde, a colt bred in Cheshire who we also recognise with our feature race on Thursday. The two Class 1 events on Wednesday’s card then see the focus switch to the threeyear-olds and they are races to watch closely with the potential for future stars to be on show. In comparison with other historic races at Chester Racecourse, the Cheshire Oaks is a relative newcomer as it was first run in 1950 when the winner was Requete. The Listed race has been targeted by leading trainers, including Sir Henry Cecil who won it three times including with subsequent Epsom Oaks heroine Light Shift. The most successful trainer in the race is Barry Hills who landed the prize seven times, while Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden have won the last five renewals between them. The starname amongst the roll of honour is none other than Enable who was actually gaining her second-career success when she won the 2017 Cheshire Oaks for Gosden, a victory that began an exceptional twelve-race winning streak for the wondermare.

ENABLE, 2017 CHESHIRE OAKS

With the Cheshire Oaks being for ﬁllies, the Chester Vase offers the opportunity for the males to gain valuable experience with trainers using Chester as a key part of their horses’ development. First established in 1907, the Vase has an illustrious roll of honour with one of the early winners of the race being the great Hyperion, who began his threeyear-old career on the Roodee before going on to success in both the Derby and the St Leger. Moving onto the 80s and 1980 and 1981 saw back-to-back winners of the Vase follow-up in the Derby, with the AmericanSHERGAR, bred Henbit gaining Classic glory at Epsom 1981 DERBY followed by the legendary Shergar a year later. In more recent times, the master Irish-trainer Aidan O’Brien has built up an excellent record in the Chester Vase, winning the race a record nine times. In 2013, his Ruler Of The World had not run as a two-year-old and only made his debut a month prior to the May Festival. He would win the Vase by an impressive six lengths and the experience of Chester helped the son of Galileo quickly progress to become a Derby winner. 11

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five furlongs conditions stakes for two-year-olds only. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, colts and geldings are allocated an initial weight of 9st 2lb, with fillies carrying 8st 11lb. There are then penalties given for wins at Class 3 level or above: 3lb for each Class 3 race won, 5lb for each Class 2 and 7lb for each Class 1. The penalties are cumulative and the maximum penalty is 9lb.

So, could this year’s Cheshire Oaks, run at Chester on the opening day of the May meeting on Wednesday, contain another future star? The pedigrees of the seven declared runners certainly suggest there could be. For starters, two are out of Group 1 winners. Darlectable You (pictured right), trained by John and Thady Gosden for Lord Lloyd-Webber and runner-up on each of her two starts, is by Dubawi out of Dubai Sheema Classic heroine Dar Re Mi. That makes her a full-sister to dual champion Too Darn Hot, St Leger runner-up Lah Ti Dar and Musidora Stakes scorer So Mi Dar. Leopardstown maiden winner and Flame Of Tara Stakes fifth Nicest, meanwhile, is by US Triple Crown laureate American Pharoah out of the aforementioned Chicquita. The Donnacha O’Brien-trained filly is thus closely related to previous Cheshire Oaks winner Magic Wand. Another of this year’s runners is a sibling to a Classic winner. Listed-placed La Joconde, trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore-Westerberg partnership, is by Frankel out of the winning Cape Cross mare Wadyhatta, making her a half-sister to last year’s Irish Derby hero Santiago. Perennial champion sire Galileo has just the one representative in this year’s Cheshire Oaks: Fozzy Stack’s Group 3-placed filly Ahandfulofsummers, who is co-owned by Cayton Park Stud and Coolmore. She is out of Scream Blue Murder, a Group 3-winning sprinter by Oratorio. Dubai Fountain, a close second in the May Hill Stakes and fourth in the Fillies’ Mile last term, is by Galileo’s high-achieving sire son Teofilo. Trained by Mark Johnston for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, she is out of Nafura, a dual-winning Dubawi half-sister to Godolphin Group 1 winners Dubai Destination and Librettist. Quenelle D’Or, an impressive Kempton maiden winner last month for trainer Hugo Palmer and owners Lady Derby and Lady Ritblat, is a daughter of the outstanding Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn. She is out of the winning Nayef mare Quenelle and her granddam is a half-sister to Lord Derby’s wonderful racemare Ouija Board. Victory for the likely Cheshire Oaks favourite, the unbeaten Montrose Fillies’ Stakes winner Zeyaadah, would be poignant as she carries the silks of the late Hamdan Al Maktoum. The Roger Varian-trained filly is by Tamayuz out of an Act One half-sister to Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up Suez, the dam of Fillies’ Mile winner Lyric Of Light. Any one of those seven fillies would be worthy additions to this prestigious race’s roll of honour, which includes not only Enable, Diamondsandrubies and Magic Wand but also Classic winners Light Shift, Bolas, Swiftfoot, Shoot A Line, Dibidale and Lupe.

FORCE MAJEURE 1. ONCE THE RACE MEETING HAS COMMENCED 4. Entry into, and the right to remain within the Racecourse property is subject to the requirement to submit to a search or a number of searches of Racegoers, their baggage or vehicles in which they travel. 5. The climbing of fences, stands and any other buildings is forbidden. Trespassing on the racetrack, except at designated crossing points, is disallowed at all times.

1.1 Upon the happening of such an event the obligations of the Company and any period of time then running shall be suspended for the period of the event plus such time as may be required to resume normality.

6. Any person failing to comply with instructions from a steward or police officer may be ejected from the Racecourse. 7. Customers in the County Stand are required to observe a strict dress code. Gentlemen are required to wear a suit jacket, collar and tie. Ladies are required to wear smart dress. No jeans or tracksuits are allowed. These standards of dress also apply to patrons in all hospitality and restaurant facilities.

1.2 Such an event shall not entitle the Racegoer to take any steps against the Company for breach or to terminate the agreement or otherwise. PRIOR TO THE COMMENCEMENT OF RACE MEETING

8. Please observe the designated no drinking areas. Food and alcoholic beverages cannot be brought into any Racecourse enclosure except the Open Course.

2. Where badges, car park labels or hospitality packages are sold for a specified area of the Racecourse, the Company will use its best endeavours to ensure the specified area is available for use at the specified time. If however the specified area cannot be used for reasons not within the control of the Company then the Company shall be entitled to offer a reasonable alternative. If no alternative is offered by the Company the customer will be entitled to a full refund of monies received by the Company.

9. Gambling and the consumption of alcoholic beverages by Racegoers under the age of 18 are strictly prohibited. 10. All unauthorised photography and any flash photography is strictly prohibited. Racedays at Chester are attended by the media and given coverage on TV, radio, online and in print. From time-to-time, we also capture images and moving video of racegoers attending a day at Chester Racecourse. Footage and videos can often be used on social media or in promotional materials the racecourse produces. By entering the racecourse, attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage. Each Attendee will give any additional consents or waivers required for the

11. Flags, banners and other articles and any behaviour such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting which may constitute an annoyance to spectators or distract or frighten the horses are prohibited.

(ii) Send the badges/tickets and/or labels along with a covering letter stating the full name and address of the sender and if different from that of the sender, the full name and address of the purchaser of the badges/tickets or labels to: Chester Race Company Limited, The Racecourse, Chester CH1 2LY. To be valid, requests for refunds must be received in writing within one month of the abandoned Raceday. The Company shall have no responsibility or liability of any nature in respect of any refund request received after that time.

12. No dogs are allowed anywhere on the Racecourse (with the exception of aid dogs) and must not be left in vehicles. 13. Transfers between enclosures may be possible on the day, subject to availability. 14. Parking or setting down on the side is prohibited other than at official car parks. 15. Lost or stolen badges will not be replaced.

19. All persons visiting the Racecourse are admitted to these Regulations and to the Rules of Racing. The Company reserves the right to refuse admission to/or to remove from the Racecourse, in its absolute discretion and without giving any reasons, any person failing to comply with such Rules and Regulations or whose presence is, in its absolute discretion, a source of danger or annoyance and shall have no obligation to give any reason therefore.

16. Hospitality badges are sold on the understanding that no money in respect of the unused badges will be reimbursed. 17. In the event of abandonment at any time on the day of racing, there will be no refund in respect of Box, Room or Chalet hire charges. 18. In the event of abandonment before Racing, or up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the first race there will be a refund of badge/ticket and parking costs. In the event of an abandonment after the ‘Weighed-In’ of the first race up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the third race or nominated feature race whichever is later there will be a 50% refund of badge/ticket and car parking costs. In the event of abandonment thereafter there will be no refunds. No cash returns to be paid on the day. All refunds to be administered after the meeting by post. Where the customer is entitled (pursuant to this clause 19) to any refund, in order to qualify for such refund the customer must follow the procedure listed opposite.

20. The Company shall in no circumstances be liable for any loss, damage, cost or expense or any consequential or indirect loss or damage of any kind. 21. Lost children and lost luggage enquiries should be made to the police. 22. It is a condition of entry that only individuals possessing a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets. Anyone contravening this condition will be evicted.
