A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - THURSDAY 6 MAY 2021 WELCOME TO DAY TWO OF THE 2021 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – LADIES DAY It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the second day of the Boodles May Festival at Chester Racecourse. We enjoyed an excellent opening to the 2021 season yesterday, witnessing some thrilling action on the track and we are back on-course for more of the same today. It was a pleasure to welcome back Owners and Trainers to Chester Racecourse yesterday for the first time this year. We are indebted to the support that we receive from professionals within the racing industry and the Owners and Trainers who choose to run their horses at Chester. There was a special atmosphere at the racecourse, created by Owners cheering on their horses on The Roodee turf for the opening fixture of the 2021 season. The Boodles May Festival is an incredibly important and popular date in the racing calendar and would traditionally attract crowds of around 20,000 on each of the three days. It is of course unfortunate that we are not yet in a position where we can welcome back full crowds, but we are all counting down the days to when spectators can once again be welcomed. Today we look forward to the running of another seven races, including The Tote+ biggest dividends at tote.co.uk Dee Stakes and The Tote+ pays you more Ormonde Stakes. With a roll call of honourable winners in recent years such as Cliffs of Moher, Dartmouth and Circus Maximus, the stakes both on and off the track are high. With some excellent horses in contention, this afternoon’s card offers up some riveting competition. The total prize fund for the Boodles May Festival is £755,000, highlighting Chester Racecourse’s commitment to supporting the Horsemen’s Group. May I thank today’s sponsors; Nicholas Wainwright and the team at Boodles, continuing their title sponsorship of the festival for an eight term. Additional thanks to our race sponsors: Satchell Moran Solicitors, Tote, Deepbridge Estate Planning Service, Destination 2, British Stallion Studs EBF and Boodles – your support is greatly appreciated. As ever, we have been working hard to bring new developments to the racecourse and today we unveil a new enclosure, the Champagne Garden. Brand new for the 2021 season, the Champagne Garden is the perfect spot to get close to the action with prime views over the Paddock and Parade Ring. May I remind you that we are still operating under strict COVID-19 guidance and ask that you read the Owners Code of Conduct on pages 4 & 5 to ensure a safe day for all at Chester Racecourse. I wish you all an enjoyable and memorable day’s racing and a safe journey home.
Ian O’Doherty Chairman 1

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – LADIES DAY HISTORY WHILE RACEDAY FASHIONS ARE A BIG PART OF THE SECOND DAY OF THE BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL, THE ORMONDE AND DEE STAKES ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS ON THE TRACK AND THE CLASS 1 RACES HAVE DEVELOPED A HIGH-CLASS ROLL OF HONOUR OVER THE YEARS. Following on from Wednesday’s Chester Vase, the Dee Stakes is also a recognised trial for the Derby although it is run over the shorter distance of one mile, two furlongs and seventy yards. Named after the river which runs alongside the racecourse, the race was established in 1813 and was originally open to both colts and fillies. The most recent winners who went on to be successful in the Derby are the Sir Henry Cecil-trained Oath who competed the double in 1999, followed by Kris Kin for Sir Michael Stoute in 2003. The leading trainer in the Dee Stakes is Barry Hills who recorded a fantastic eleven winners of the race, while Aidan O’Brien has dominated things of late. The master Irish-trainer has won the Listed contest eight times since 2005, including the last three runnings. His most recent winner of the Dee Stakes actually fits an unusual profile as Circus Maximus was subsequently dropped back in distance to become a top-class miler, going on to win three times at the highest level over the shorter distance.
CIRCUS MAXIMUS, 2019 DEE STAKES
The Ormonde Stakes is one for the staying horses as it is run over a distance of one mile and five and a half furlongs. The naming of the Group 3 race can be traced back to 1886, which was when the Chester race crowd witnessed the unbeaten Ormonde, a colt bred in Cheshire, gaining success on the Roodee. He went on to win the Triple Crown of Classic races at Newmarket, Epsom and Doncaster during his three-year-old season and he would remain unbeaten through his 16-race career. Two other famous horses on the Ormonde roll of honour include two Derby winners, Blakeney and Teenoso, who were successful at Chester as four-year-olds in 1970 and 1984. The latter, trained by Geoff Wragg and ridden by Pat Eddery on the Roodee, would go on to success in the King George at Ascot later that year. Only three horses have won the race twice – Sovrango won back-to-back renewals in 1962 and 1963 before Clive Brittain’s Shambo repeated the feat some forty years later. The last dualwinner of the race was the Geoff Wragg-trained St Expedit who landed the race in 2001 and 2002. In more recent times, the Ormonde has been won by a number of high-class horses in the last ten renewals. Sir Michael Stoute is renowned for his patient approach with his older horses and he has landed the race a record six times, including with Harbinger in 2010 and a success for Her Majesty The Queen with Dartmouth in 2016, while other winners to note include the Aidan O’Brien-trained St Nicholas Abbey in 2011 and the popular success of Brown Panther for local trainer Tom Dascombe in 2014.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Provided the ground doesn’t become too soft, JABBAROCKIE looks to have cracking claims from stall 1. He made all in a good time in a strong handicap at Musselburgh on his return and certainly isn’t weighted out of things after a 3lb rise. Mondammej is a big player if backing up his impressive Pontefract win, while a revival from Copper Knight, second in this in 2019, wouldn’t surprise.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

He looks ready for this step up in trip and can provide Aidan O’Brien with a ninth win in this. Yibir was a good third in a Group 3 at Sandown in his comeback and is likely to get the run of things, so rates the obvious threat.

(Penalty Value £10308) Weights raised 4lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

(Penalty Value £45368) RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile, five furlongs about 84 yards race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

PLAY SMARTER
MORANDO ran well in defeat last season and looks set for a big run having won this on testing ground on his reappearance in 2019. The race clearly revolves around Japan, who could potentially have too much for these if back to his best, but he could be worth taking on under these conditions first-time out. Further rain would make the progressive Trueshan a big threat despite a 5lb penalty.

(Penalty Value £6184.80) Weights raised 1lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. 2 Eliminated Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race.

Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

ZOLTAN STAR was prominent in the betting and showed plenty to work on when runner-up on debut at Windsor 24 days ago, noted running on late. He’s likely to have derived plenty from that and earns the vote to come out on top operating from the plum draw in stall 1. Russellinthebushes looked sharp when just touched off at Redcar and is feared most, ahead of Mercurial.

THE BOODLES HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)
1m 4f 63y
For three yrs old Total race value £12000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £4876, 2nd £2438, 3rd £1219, 4th £610, 5th £305, 6th £152. (Penalty Value £6184.80) Weights raised 1lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
