Chester Racecard - Saturday 29th May - Roman Day

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 29 MAY 2021 Good Afternoon, Welcome to our first Saturday meeting of the 2021 Chester season, and more significantly, our first fixture back with spectators at Chester Racecourse. This bank holiday weekend promises to be unlike any other with the sun shining and a tangible sense of relief and hope across the course as crowds finally return to the Roodee after more than 12 months away. Today, you are a part of Chester Racecourse history as you belong to a limited crowd who can once again enjoy the best in British horse racing. We have seven exciting races scheduled for today beginning with the Tote+ Novice Stakes at 2:05pm and the Class 2 Tote+ Pays You More at Tote.co.uk Handicap Stakes at 2.40pm. I would like to offer my thanks to Tote+ and our other sponsors for today’s races. Now more than ever, the continued support of our business from our attendees and partners is valued greatly. Today we have put our best foot forward for the coming season, and you are spoilt for choice with the food and drink options on offer. Our hospitality venues are eagerly awaiting the return of spectators to our celebrated racecourse, from the centre-course Parade to the panoramic viewing of 1539. We hope you enjoy the first-class hospitality for which Chester Racecourse is renowned. Today’s nominated charity is Mental Health UK. Their work supporting those across the UK with mental health issues has proven even more vital over the last year and their services have provided a lifeline to countless people who have been affected by the pandemic. Please donate what you can for such a noble, worthy, and crucial cause. I hope you have an outstanding day with us here at Chester Racecourse. Today is an unusual opportunity for you to attend a much-loved fixture in an intimate setting of a significantly reduced crowd. Our next meeting is Summer Saturday on the 12th June and we hope you’ll join us here again for it. After that, we look forward to the Clogau Ladies Evening on the 25th June which will hopefully mark the return of racing as normal. Find more information on our fixtures on our website at chester-races.com.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS AVETA showed that she has took giant strides forward from two to three when making a winning reappearance at Windsor 12 days ago and, with further improvement on the cards, she could take some stopping in her bid to follow up. Sky Dweller made a pleasing debut when fourth over 1m on the all-weather at Lingfield and, although likely to want further sooner rater than later, he should run well here. The betting market could prove a good guide as to what is expected from the two newcomers, with Yojaari particularly interesting.

RACE 2

WIN: AVETA

Boardman has won his last two and demands respect, while King’s Knight and Ejtilaab also arrive in decent form and shouldn’t be too far away. However, ANOTHER BATT looks to have outstanding claims for David Barron and Connor Beasley. The six-year-old brings winning C&D form to the table and a comfortable 7f victory at Thirsk two weeks ago shows him to be arriving in great nick. He should go very close off a 5lb higher mark.

RACE 3

WIN: ANOTHER BATT

RACE 4 RACE 5

EACH WAY: BAILEYS BREATHLESS

Blow Your Horn has impressively notched an all-weather double and merits close consideration on what is only his second turf appearance, but narrow preference is for CARLOS FELIX. He made a pleasing stable debut for Philip Kirby when runner-up over an extended 1m4f here earlier in the month and stepping up in trip should suit. Having top course jockey Franny Norton take over the reigns is also a big positive. Salisbury runner-up Dreamweaver is another name for the shortlist. WIN: CARLOS FELIX

EACH WAY: BLOW YOUR HORN

AL SHIBLI went to his Newbury debut with a bit of a reputation because he was sent off favourite against previous winners. He had to settle for third in the end, but the performance still offered plenty of encouragement and he can make it second-time lucky. I’m A Gambler also shaped with a good deal of promise on his introduction, going down fighting at Yarmouth, while the selection’s stablemate Magic Warrior hasn’t performed badly at Newmarket and York. Point Lynas should step forward from his own Newmarket effort. WIN: AL SHIBLI

RACE 6

EACH WAY: BOARDMAN

RUMAYTHAH showed a likeable attitude when winning over this trip at Ripon last time and there is every chance of a follow-up. The Kodiac filly must shoulder top-weight as she eases in class, but a 3lb rise for scoring latest is fair and Jack Mitchell should be able to bag a prominent early position from stall four. Baileys Breathless could well be the pacesetter and warrants plenty of respect under course specialist Franny Norton, while Credible and Cuban Breeze are just a couple of others with claims in a competitive handicap. WIN: RUMAYTHAH

EACH WAY: I’M A GAMBLER

Khezaana struck with something up her sleeve on her handicap bow at Beverley, but comes up against some interesting opponents who now take their own first steps outside of maiden/novice company. Military Mission won as he liked at Salisbury, while the form of Beating All’s Windsor fourth already looks strong. REMEDIUM let down favourite-backers at the same venue, but he previously beat all bar Derby contender Third Realm on his Nottingham comeback so a mark of 81 could be lenient. WIN: REMEDIUM

RACE 7

EACH WAY: SKY DWELLER

EACH WAY: BEATING ALL

The application of cheekpieces helped PUNTING put some terrible performances behind her at Chelmsford, although one admittedly came when she was pitched in too deep in the John Porter. If the headgear has the same effect, she can prove too good for Abel Tasman, who regained his own winning thread at Wolverhampton last time out. Soapy Stevens remains on a workable rating, while Natty Night must be better than he showed on his debut for Venetia Williams at Lingfield because he was sent off favourite. WIN: PUNTING

EACH WAY: ABEL TASMAN

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

This contest is a novice stakes, run over a distance of seven furlongs about 127 yards. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

There were possible excuses for THE GATEKEEPER’s below-par performance at Newbury last time and he’s probably worth another chance as his Ascot form prior to that is the best on offer here. Ryan’s Party is selected to turn around Hamilton form with Tipperary Sunset and provide the main threat.

THE CHESTER FC WELCOMES FANS BACK FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

6f 17y

For three yrs old fillies Total race value £9250 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3435, 2nd £1717, 3rd £859, 4th £429, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £4346.99) Weights raised 2lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-old fillies which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

PLAY SMARTER

CUBAN BREEZE shaped as if back in form when bang there for a long way in a course Class 2 earlier this month so might be worth siding with back at a lower level. Rumaythah is progressing nicely so she rates an obvious danger, while Baileys Breathless is a front-runner who has the rail draw so can also be expected to play a prominent role under Franny Norton.

As such, Broken Spear rates the main danger.

THE MENTAL HEALTH UK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

1m 5f 84y

For four yrs old and upwards Total race value £11500 Owners Prize Money. 1st £4672, 2nd £2337, 3rd £1168, 4th £584, 5th £292, 6th £146. (Penalty Value £5927.10) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, five furlongs about 84 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty which is based on the age of the horse in this race.

THE CHESTER MARATHON EBF MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)

6f 17y

For maiden two yrs old Total race value £19000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £7720, 2nd £3861, 3rd £1930, 4th £965, 5th £483, 6th £241. (Penalty Value £9792.60) RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds, which are E.B.F. eligible. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

1m 2f 70y

For three yrs old Total race value £9250 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3435, 2nd £1717, 3rd £859, 4th £429, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £4346.99) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
