ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •
Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1
TODAY’S TOP TIPS ZLATAN triumphed with Sophie Smith on board at Sandown and, as a result, has a 4lb penalty to contend with. That extra burden shouldn’t be too much of a worry and the eight-year-old gets the vote to land successive wins from the inside stall. Praxeology hit the line with conviction when getting up close home at this venue last month and merits consideration off 1lb higher. Completing the shortlist is Garden Oasis, who performed with credit in the Carlisle Bell.
RACE 2
WIN: ZLATAN
DAIRERIN emphatically dismissed his rivals at Salisbury 16 days ago and it would be something of a surprise if a penalty stopped Michael Bell’s colt in his tracks. The Tom Dascombe-trained Roman Dragon shed the maiden tag over C&D last month and should be able to build on that win. River Pride failed to stay 7f at Newbury last time out and the front-running filly completes the shortlist.
RACE 3
WIN: DAIRERIN
RACE 4 RACE 5
EACH WAY: SKY DEFENDER
Radio Caroline was outclassed in the Chesham at Royal Ascot when only beating one rival home, but the ease in grade warrants her a fair amount of respect on her nursery debut. I’m A Gambler is sure to benefit from the step up to 7f based on his most recent effort at Haydock, but the vote goes to SIR MIN. He shaped well on his introduction at the course in May and is likely to improve at this distance after his 6f fourth at Carlisle. WIN: SIR MIN
EACH WAY: RADIO CAROLINE
CONFRONTATIONAL arrives having won his last couple of starts on the all-weather at Newcastle and he makes plenty of appeal with the booking of Franny Norton in his favour. Rattling Rosie didn’t appear to get home over 1m2f at Haydock last time so the drop back in trip will aid her cause, while Ugo Gregory and Legal Reform can both enter the reckoning on their recent performances. WIN: CONFRONTATIONAL
RACE 6
EACH WAY: ROMAN DRAGON
Although Sky Defender has been given a chance by the handicapper, he could be vulnerable to an improving candidate. With that in mind, the Andrew Balding-trained GROUP ONE POWER gets the nod, with William Carver taking off a handy 5lb. The Lope De Vega gelding has been knocking on the door this year, finishing in the first three on all four appearances, and could still be well handicapped. Sam Cooke has been supported on his two outings this campaign and should be thereabouts too. WIN: GROUP ONE POWER
EACH WAY: RATTLING ROSIE
LINCOLN PARK looks difficult to oppose after his nose second to Mr Wagyu at Haydock and as he goes up 2lb in the handicap in future, now is his best chance of a fifth career success. Afandem will love the ground, is well handicapped on his better form, and he can feature. Centurion Song transferred his winter all-weather form to the turf when scoring at Bath on Wednesday and would be entitled to respect if turned out again. WIN: LINCOLN PARK
RACE 7
EACH WAY: PRAXEOLOGY
EACH WAY: AFANDEM
Nikolayeva won over two miles-plus at Wolverhampton last September and if she can repeat that here on turf off 3lb higher, she will be a player. Pax Britannica was a good third at Yarmouth over shorter and should also get involved, but a chance is taken on MILITARY TWO STEP. Lightly raced and stepping up from an extended mile and a half, Mark Johnston knows a stayer when he sees one and his Jukebox Jury filly has more to offer over this trip. WIN: MILITARY TWO STEP
EACH WAY: NIKOLAYEVA

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

PLAY SMARTER
Gelded ahead of his improved handicap debut fourth at Bath on Wednesday, CABLE GUY could be the answer to this weak race if turned out again quickly. Bellevarde also performed with credit a couple of days ago, finishing third at Lingfield, and a repeat of that would put her firmly in the picture. Aquadabra can usually be relied upon to run her race and she also enters calculations.

An open novice event in which ROMAN DRAGON’s course experience could count for a lot. A winner over C&D last month, he should have more to offer providing he handles the likely softer ground. Dairerin is proven on soft ground and impressed last time so will be a danger but he is penalised for two wins. River Pride is far from out of it either.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, three furlongs and 75 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

for two yrs old Total race value £8100 Owners Prize Money. 1st £2944, 2nd £1472, 3rd £736, 4th £368, 5th £240, 6th £240. (Penalty Value £3726) Weights raised 2lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85.

A tricky nursery but EVER GIVEN is proven on soft ground and could be forgiven his Pontefract disappointment. He’s had plenty of time to recover from two quick runs and should go close if repeating his Ripon form. Radio Caroline was thrown in the deep end at Royal Ascot and she should find this easier. Mahagoni should appreciate the step up in trip.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

A trappy handicap and it may be worth chancing BANKROLLED. Her debut run at York looked very good and she hasn’t gone on from that but she did take a step back in the right direction at Haydock last time. She is still lightly raced and may spring a surprise. Ugo Gregory is solid and has to be taken seriously from his low draw. Spartan Fighter is on a workable mark if he finds his form.
