SSAFA has supported the entire Armed Forces community – Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force, regulars and reserves, still serving and veterans, and their families during peacetime and conflict – since 1885.
As we mark our 140th anniversary, our message is clear: whatever you’re facing, we’ll never let anyone in the Armed Forces family battle alone.
Welcome to the Combined Services Point-to-Point. This is the fifteenth running of this iteration. Created in 2010, by combining two of the most prestigious Larkhill days of racing, the United Services and the Army Point-to-Points, the original meeting took place here on Saturday 25th February 1950. At that time, it was called the United Services Point-to-Point and for many years it opened the point-to-point season.
In 1953, Larkhill Racecourse was honoured by the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who watched the racing from a special stand. After the last race The Queen presented a new challenge cup – the Coronation Cup – to the winner of the Open Race. This race has been run as part of the United Services Point-to-Point ever since, with this year being the 66th Anniversary. It has over time become one of the four Classics of the Point-to-Point season with many using it as a trial for The Foxhunter Chase. In 1995, Fantus, trained by the legendary Richard Barber, won both, whilst in 1998 Cavalero, having won here, went on to win the Foxhunters’ Chase at Aintree. Last year we witnessed a very exciting dead heat between Regatta de Blanc and Grace A Vous Enki.
The Army meeting moved to Larkhill around 20 years ago having taken over the role of the first meeting in the calendar. Both meetings have supported SSAFA, the ABF (The Soldiers Charity) and other charities throughout their time and have donated in excess of £75,000 to various Saddle Clubs, Saddle Club Associations, jockey and official training and the Racecourse itself. In the Combined Services meeting the aim remains to promote steeplechase riding throughout the Forces; to train jockeys, vets and doctors and to help Larkhill Racecourse thrive and improve as the only remaining military racecourse in the country. The two Point-to-Point Committees worked to combine the best from both original meetings, hence a full card of excellent racing.
This year we have only tweaked the card following its great success two years ago. We hope to have several military jockeys competing in the other races during the day and we are delighted to be running a Ladies Conditions race.
I am delighted to welcome you to the 2025 Combined Services Point-to-Point meeting and hope that you have a very enjoyable day’s racing.

All persons attending this meeting do so at their own risk. The Ministry of Defence, the Committee of the Combined Services Point-to-Point and the Trustees of the Larkhill Point-to-Point will not accept any responsibility for injury, damage or loss involving persons, horses, vehicles or property.
Point to points are fundamentally amateur horse races over fences, which combined two traditions that came from Hunting and the military. The Combined Services today is the last military, or bona fide, meeting.
Whilst the meetings are run by volunteers, there is a formal national structure for the sport which lays downs the rules and regulations that govern the fixtures, jockeys and horses. This allows races to be framed which pit similar level horses against each other to provide competitive racing in a way very similar to normal racing under rules that you might see at Cheltenham or Ascot.
From the general public’s point of view, there is one major difference, and that is that the horses are only declared to run on the day. As a result, the actual runners are announced before each race along with any missing or amended information. You, as the spectator, need to mark your card accordingly.
Once you know who is running, you can choose who you think will win by considering the form provided – an explanation of how to read this is on the opposite page – and looking at them in the paddock. Alternatively, you can look for inspiration in their names as I often do.
Once a choice has been made you can go and put on a bet at the bookies. This is much simpler than it looks. The bookies will offer odds against each horse. Normally this will be a whole number and in effect means they will give you that number in return for one of yours. For example if you place a bet of £10 on at 6-1 (shown as a 6) you will get back £70 – ie £60 plus your original £10. If it says 6-4, it in effect means you get £60 for £40 placed – a total of £100. The really good news is that they will give you a piece of paper which states what you will get back if you win.
You can also place an ‘each way bet’, which means that half your stake is going on the horse to win and half your stake that it will place (ie in first three). The latter odds will be divided by 5 but you will get your money back as a whole. Probably only worth doing on long odds unless you know something.
However, Point-to-Points are not just about gambling. It’s the thrill of the day, the picnic, the tradestands, and above all the atmosphere. Enjoy your day.

R1. Midnight Midge was given a good ride by the promising James Shaw to win a similar race at the last meeting and a repeat may be on the cards. Drop Him In won the Hunt race at Cocklebarrow and is the main danger For Rita ought to improve on her seasonal debut and gets on well with Abigail Henry. Doctor Foley won three steeplechases for Anthony Honeyball and he may be a good recruit for these sort of races. Midnight Midge is chosen.
R2. Impakt St Georges was impressive at the last meeting for the in form Josh Newman stable. Kilfilum Woods has already won two races this season and it would not be a surprise if he triumphed in this race. Corporal Jackjones was in second place at Milborne St Andrew when unseating at the last and he has place prospects. Crawter has already won at Larkhill and he is another for the short list. Impakt St Georges is the selection.
R3. This may see the seasonal debut of the venerable Southfield Theatre who is now aged seventeen. Despite his years he is still an enthusiastic performer who likes to front run and he may be able to defy his age to record another victory. Givega holds an entry in this race and if this is chosen, he may be too speedy for his older rival. Paloma Blue appeared to be in the need of his debut at Milborne St Andrew and should now strip much fitter. Switch Hitter is another who would come into the reckoning on his best form but he has a lot to find to reverse the form with Givega who is the choice.
R4. This high-quality entry is headed by Viroflay who was third in this race last season having won both his other outings. This will be his seasonal debut, but he runs well fresh and is the selection. Amongst his potential rivals are the classy My Drogo who won easily at the last meeting and Bardenstown Lad who won at Askham Bryan but both have entries elsewhere. Due de Bourbon has been in good form this season and he may be the main danger to Viroflay. What a Glance is very consistent and should have come on from his seasonal debut at Horseheath and similar comments apply to Trevada who won a Hunter Chase at Fakenham on his final outing last season. Givega won a competitive race at the December meeting but this is a tougher race.
R5. This may be won by City Silk who was fourth to King de Palma at Wadebridge last month and with that rival winning again at Milborne St Andrew that form ought to be good enough. Of his potential rivals, Luke Price has two entries Echo of Promise and Scoro with the last named a promising third at Cocklebarrow. Blackijo Dagrostis has been placed twice this season and should be on the short list. Two in Tune was third in a better race at Milborne St Andrew whereas Punch Perfect will be making his English debut for Josh Newman’s stable and should be watched. City Silk is the choice if he does not run in the last race.
R6. Taghadoe unseated on his last outing at Charing but has already been placed twice this season and brings the best form. City Silk may opt for this race and if so the hint should be taken. Canal Court a half brother to Chantry House and this former Chris Gordon trained gelding may be a good recruit to pointing. Ballinoulart was placed at Milborne St Andrew and should give his novice rider a good ride. A chance is taken with Canal Court.
