IMPERIAL CUP DAY

The Ultimate Pre-Cheltenham Party SATURDAY 8 MARCH

WELCOME to Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day

The first Royal Artillery Steeplechase meeting was held in 1862, so this year marks our 163rd Anniversary and the 140th running of the race, having lost a few opportunities through war, weather and disease!. The race was first run at Sandown Park in 1878 and we are most grateful to Sandown Park for the support it continues to provide.

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup remains a unique regimental race for military amateur jockeys, the Gunners, are proud to be the only regiment in the British Army to hold its own race under Rules at a premier racecourse. We are profoundly grateful to Team Forces, whose continued and significant funding is invaluable in providing essential training for our jockeys. This year marks a momentous occasion as we also welcome them, in association with boxxe as the co-sponsors of the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, a partnership we deeply appreciate. In addition to boxxe’s inaugural foray into the thrilling world of military racing, they are also generously sponsoring the prestigious boxxe ‘Ubique’ Handicap Steeple Chase, for which we add our sincerest thanks. Finally, we would like to thank Spectra Group (UK) Ltd for its continued support of military race days through its sponsorship of today’s Spectra Group Alanbrooke Handicap Steeple Chase.

A particular vote of thanks must go to our owners and trainers without whose support there would be no Gunner meeting. They have become close friends of military racing. They lose none of their competitiveness in this race but are generous and kind to our military jockeys in providing them with the opportunity to battle it out for the honours.

Sadly, we take this opportunity to remember Major Peter ‘Griff’ Griffith who died on 30th January after bravely fighting a long illness. Griff was a Gunner Gold Cup Committee member, with special responsibilities for looking after owners. He served as Troop Captain with The King’s Troop RHA, and with 7th Parachute Regiment RHA and 4th Regiment RA.

Gunner Gold Cup Day is the largest gathering of serving and retired Gunners of all ranks in our Regimental calendar. For some soldiers this may be their first taste of racing. I hope you will enjoy the pageantry of The King’s Troop RHA, the music of the Pipes and Drums of 19th Regiment RA and the historic equipment display of the Royal Artillery Museum. Please take the time to walk through the Surrey Hall where all our Regiments have set up focal points for their current members attending today and to greet past members and friends such as you.

We are delighted to again work with the Royal Artillery Association who will be collecting in aid of the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund, which helps so many serving and veteran Gunners and their families, as well as supporting comradeship and welfare in the serving and retired Regiment. Many of those attending today have seen active service in UK and around the world and others of the serving Regiment are not here because they are currently deployed at home and abroad. We wish them all well.

We hope you have an enjoyable day. Thank you for coming and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

BETFAIR IMPERIAL CUP DAY

If there was a perfect prelude to the Cheltenham Festival then Betfair Imperial Cup Day at Sandown Park is almost certainly it.

In years gone by winners of the two mile prize have gone on to glory at The Festival the following week, including Blowing Wind in 1998, who followed up in the County Hurdle, and 2007 winner Gaspara, who backed her win up in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown this afternoon, aGrade2conteststagedovertwoand-a-halfmiles.

Jamie Snowden has won two of the lastfourrenewalsoftherace–with his only two runners – and again looks to hold a strong hand here with Hollygrove Cha Cha The fiveyear-old won both of her bumpers last term and remained unbeaten over hurdles for her first two starts, before finishing runner-up in Listed company at Taunton last time behind the smart Jubilee Alpha. After appearing slightly outpaced as the race developed, she rallied home strongly, and this longer trip shouldsuit.

Holloway Queen has made an extremely bright start to life over hurdles.

Fergal O’Brien has also landed the spoils in this contest twice, and his That’ll Do Moss arrives here on the backofacomfortablesuccessatAyr onhurdlingdebutlasttime.Shehas displayed plenty of raw ability but willhavetolearntosettlebetterupin trip here. Neil Mulholland’s two-time bumper winner Blue Las improved

Runner-up in her sole point, Nicky Henderson’s Holloway Queen has made an extremely bright start to life over hurdles. The five-yearold kept on well despite showing inexperience to see of a 118-rated rival at Lingfield before improving to run out an impressive winner of a Listed event at Haydock. Whilst she was left out in the clear by a final flight faller, the mare was comfortably on top at the time and sets the standard on that form, for all she must carry a 5lb penalty for thesuccess.

The race is given an extra interest with Irish raider Mummy Derry making the trip over for last year’s Champion Trainer, Willie Mullins. Thefive-year-oldbyYeatsisahalfsister to the high-class Spillane’s Tower and was last seen finishing runner-up in a Listed bumper at Navan. She stayed on strongly at the finish that day, suggesting this sort of trip should suit, but she is making her hurdles debut in strong company here and should only improvefortheexperience.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £480,334 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 1st January to 28th March 2025.

HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ARTILLERY GOLD CUP

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup is one of the oldest events in the Racing Calendar. The inaugural event was held in 1862 and, following in the footsteps of the Grand Military Meeting, which was first held in 1841, the meeting immediately proved extremely popular with members of the Regiment.

The first winner was Chickahominy, ridden by Captain John Ruck-Keene He was owned by Lieutenant George Arbuthnot, who had a long and distinguished career in the Regiment and was recommended for the Victoria Cross during his service in India in the 1850s.

Sandown Park first hosted the meetingin1878whichwasnotablefor the success of Swift, who provided Lieutenant Henry Dalbiac with the second of four consecutive winning rides in the race. Dalbiac was another colourful character of the early days of the Gold Cup. He served in several of the Imperial campaigns that took place in the late 1800s and thereafter became the subject of Kipling’s famous work “The Jacket”.

In 1949 after a period of ten years without the race due to the outbreak of War in Europe, the Royal Artillery Gold Cup was run again. Times were still hard, with the majority of the Army serving overseas. The popularity of the meeting remained strong, but the availability of suitably qualified jockeys was a problem and in 1960 the decision was made to open the race to former as well as serving Gunners. More recently past and present members of the Armed Forces have qualified to ride as well as the children and grandchildren of Gunners.

In 1978 the race was privileged with the presence of former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Ten Up, given to Captain James Hodges by his godmother, the Duchess of Westminster. By then enjoying a more sedate life in hunter chases, Ten Up proved that the old class was still there by landing the Royal Artillery Cup in 1978, 1980 and 1982.

Lance Bombardier Sally Randell became the first woman to win the Royal Artillery Gold Cup in 2011 on Surenaga under the ownership of 100 Yeomanry Regiment RA(V). Sallymovedontotrainingracehorsesand, togetherwithFergalO’Brien, they are strong supporters of military racing

Sally Randell served in 47 Regiment Royal Artillery with Sergeant Mark Hampson whose daughter, Brodie Hampson, rides today, trying to win the Gunner Gold Cup for a third time. Riding Jennys Surprise Brodie took the 2016 renewal amid emotional scenes in the winners’ enclosure. The eight-year-old looked well beaten but rallied under pressure to deliver a ‘dream come true’ win for Brodie The feat was made even

more special as Brodie was riding for her father, who 2 months earlier was given just 30 days to live Sergeant Mark Hampson, who served in 47 Regiment Royal Artillery for 22 years, was ‘chuffed to bits’ to see his daughter win for the first time in his colours He sadly passed away just three months later. Brodie continued to do him proud in 2019 riding a perfect race on Carlos De Fruitier.

Captain Guy Disney and the David Pipe-trained Rathlin Rose made historyin2017and2018,becomingthefirstdualwinnersinceDePluvinel ridden by Captain Guy Prest. Guy Disney, who lost his lower right leg when his vehicle was hit by a grenade while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, was the first amputee jockey to win at a professional racecourse in Britain.

Just a few weeks ago, Captain Doug White and Fil d’Ariane fought off defending champion Farceur Du Large to take the Grand Military Gold Cup and they will line up again here today looking to complete the coveted military double Doug and Fil d’Ariane are a rare partnership in the fact that he owns, trains and rides the horse in his races.

A unique event in the racing calendar, it is credit to the Committee that the Royal Artillery Gold Cup is as popular as ever. Without their commitment and fortitude, and the wonderful support of Sandown Park, the annual gathering would surely be but a distant memory. It remains one of the Royal Artillery’s flagship days, hugely enjoyed by the Regiment and the racing public alike and long may it continue to be so.

Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
