Welcome to the Juddmonte Irish Oaks Juddmonte is delighted to sponsor this prestigious fillies’ Classic for the first time in 2020. We have a long history of sponsoring high-class racing at The Curragh, dating back over 30 years with initial sponsorship of the Beresford Stakes. Juddmonte is committed to supporting Irish racing and breeding, and it is excellent to add a Classic to our Group 1 portfolio. The quality of fillies which have won the race in recent years highlights the importance of the Irish Oaks in the global racing calendar. Prince Khalid has won the Irish Oaks three times, with Wemyss Bight in 1993, Bolas in 1994 and most recently with Enable in 2017 who, in winning the Oaks at Epsom the month previously, had become the 25th homebred European Classic winner for Prince Khalid. We are fortunate to stand a select roster of five stallions at our European headquarters in Newmarket, including two of the most exciting young stallions in the world in Frankel and Kingman. All five are out of homebred mares and range from being second generation to fourth generation homebreds. For Prince Khalid, fillies are of huge importance, and our broodmare band underpins the whole Juddmonte operation. The Irish Oaks is a breed-shaping race, with some very notable winners going on to become outstanding broodmares – for example Dahlia, Helen Street, Colorspin and Ouija Board, as well as Juddmonte’s own Wemyss Bight. Juddmonte’s first running of the Irish Oaks comes in difficult and unprecedented times, but we commend Horse Racing Ireland and The Curragh for staging another exciting renewal. We wish good fortune to all the connections and look forward to welcoming everyone back to The Curragh for the Juddmonte Irish Oaks in 2021. Douglas Erskine Crum | CEO Juddmonte Group

WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, Welcome to the Curragh for Day 1 of the Juddmonte Irish Oaks Weekend. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. Today is a very special day for the Curragh when we welcome Juddmonte as the new sponsor of the Juddmonte Irish Oaks. These are challenging times for all of us and a new sponsor for a classic is particularly welcome this year. I would like to say a very big thank you to Prince Khalid Abdullah and everybody at Juddmonte for their generous support of the Curragh. The Juddmonte Irish Oaks is a very special race where we see the best fillies of the year contest for the crown. It has produced so many great champions over the years, including the great mare Enable who won it for our sponsors today in 2017. We have a great field today and it looks like being another very special renewal of the race. In addition to the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, we have plenty of other quality races on the card. We have three Group 2 races, the Comer Group International Curragh Cup, the GAIN Railway Stakes and the Paddy Power Minstrel Stakes. We also have the Kildare Village Ladies Derby which is an important feature in the Curragh each year. We also have the Paddy Power Scurry, a very competitive handicap. We have the IEBF Maiden to kick off the afternoon, while I would also like to thank the team from Sentinel Ireland for their sponsorship for the very first time. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last nine runnings of this contest and he appears to have another excellent chance with WEMBLEY this time around. This full-brother to Group 1 winner Johannes Vermeer had both Mac Swiney (fifth) and Snowy Owl (eighth) behind when a promising third on his debut over course and distance last month and he can confirm that form en route to landing the spoils in this event. Colour Sergeant made a pleasing introduction over 6f at Fairyhouse and will likely improve for this step up in trip, while Hms Seahorse, Cold Steel and Erzindjan are all respected newcomers.

CURRAGH COMMENT TWILIGHT PAYMENT was the winner of this 12 months ago when trained by Jim Bolger and looks the one to side with once again having opened his account for Joseph O’Brien when taking the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes over track and trip last month. Stablemate Master Of Reality was back in sixth in that aforementioned contest, but the Melbourne Cup fourth is a useful operator who gives the handler a strong hand in this. Recent Fairyhouse winner Memorabilis and Camphor could also get involved now stepping up in distance.

RACE THREE
CURRAGH COMMENT ALEXEI VRONSKY had shown very little in three starts for Michael O’Callaghan last season, but looked to be on a fair mark on his handicap debut and duly obliged to land a gamble at Roscommon last month. The step up in trip proved key, and a 9lb rise might not be enough to stop the three-yearold going in again here. Charlie Bassett was beaten a short-head at Fairyhouse a fortnight ago and could go close again, while David Garrick is consistent and also makes some appeal.
WIN: ALEXEI VRONSKY
DANGER: DAVID GARRICK
HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RACE FOUR
2019 - 1st Romanised 2nd Hey Gaman (GB) 3rd Safe Voyage (1 min. 22 sec.)
CURRAGH COMMENT Romanised took this race prior to winning the Prix Jacques le Marois last year and he ended his 2019 campaign by going down by just a nose to Circus Maximus in the Prix du Moulin. The five-year-old clearly merits the utmost respect but he could be vulnerable on his first start in 314 days. With that in mind, the votes goes to LANCASTER HOUSE, who remains unexposed and he put in a career best when impressively winning the Gladness over C&D last month. The aforementioned pair may prove to be too good for Buffer Zone but he is a consistent performer at this track and he should be in the mix for the minor money, along with Surrounding.
WIN: LANCASTER HOUSE
DANGER: ROMANISED

CURRAGH COMMENT LAUGH A MINUTE enjoyed plenty of success during his time with Roger Varian and after a small period of going a bit stale for that yard, Adrian McGuinness looks to have rejuvenated him. He was mightily impressive when winning over a similar trip to this at Limerick last month and entitled to improve for that first outing since February, another bold bid looks assured. Urban Beat has been hammering on the door over shorter distances and is likely to be in the shake-up again, while Ardhoomey also merits respect following two cracking efforts over 6f at this venue.

CURRAGH COMMENT MERCHANTS QUAY has improved between runs for Aidan O’Brien and relished the step up from 5f when landing a course-and-distance maiden last month. There is likely more improvement to come from the No Nay Never colt over this trip and he shades the vote ahead of Lucky Vega, who won on debut at Naas for Jessica Harrington, and To Glory, who kept on well when scoring first time out over an extended 6f at Limerick.

JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS We look back at some of the most memorable winners of the Juddmonte Irish Oaks in recent years.
1999 RAMRUMA Sir Henry Cecil’s filly won five of her six starts during the 1999 season, her only defeat coming in the St Leger at Doncaster. She was crowned Champion Three-Year-Old filly at the end of that season and her most impressive victory was here in the Irish Oaks, as she stretched clear in the closing stages under Kieren Fallon to beat Aidan O’Brien’s Sunspangled by seven lengths.
2000 PETRUSHKA Sir Michael Stoute’s record of six victories is yet to be bettered and his latest success came in 2000, courtesy of the brilliant Petrushka. The Highclere-owned filly could only finish fourth in the Oaks at Epsom but won by five and a half lengths here at The Curragh. She subsequently confirmed her talent with two further Group 1 successes in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Prix de l’Opera.
2004 OUIJA BOARD Ed Dunlop’s Cape Cross filly amassed no less than seven Group One victories on three different continents during her illustrious career. On the back of a wide-margin success in the Oaks at Epsom, she followed up in style here before finishing an unlucky third in the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe. She has subsequently proved a successful broodmare, the most famous of her progency being the dual Derby winner Australia.

2010 SNOW FAIRY 2006 ALEXANDROVA The first of Aidan O’Brien’s five Irish Oaks winners was Alexandrova, who completed a Group 1 hat-trick during the 2006 season. Having justified favouritism at Epsom, the Sadler’s Wells filly was expected to follow up here and she didn’t disappoint. She cruised into the lead with just over a furlong to run before quickening clear of her rivals to score by four lengths at the line.
The remarkable Snow Fairy only finished outside of the first four places on one occasion during her 21 race career and she retired with six Group 1 victories to her name. Her eight-length winning margin here at The Curragh was the biggest in the Irish Oaks since 1988 and it could be some time before we see an easier winner of the race.

2017 ENABLE Despite only having won the race two years ago, Enable has already secured her place in racing history. John Gosden’s filly became the latest to complete the Epsom-Irish Oaks double before going on to add a further six Group 1s to her tally. She is now a dual winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and she’s on track to make it a treble this season - it could be some time before we see a filly of her quality again.

JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS THIS YEAR’S KEY CONTENDERS ENNISTYMON GALILEO - LAHINCH
HHHHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN
A lightly-raced filly who has finished second in her last two starts, at Royal Ascot and Epsom. She ran a fine race in the Epsom Oaks considering she was held up and stayed on well to be best of the rest behind Love.
CAYENNE PEPPER AUSTRALIA (GB) - MUWAKABA (USA)
HHHH Trained by JESSICA HARRINGTON
Winner of a Group 3 over a mile on her penultimate start as a two-year-old, she finished four and a half lengths behind Magical in the Pretty Polly last time out on her seasonal debut. The step up in trip will suit on pedigree.
SNOW GALILEO - CHELSEA ROSE
HHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN
A full sister to Kew Gardens, this talented filly landed the Munster Oaks at Cork last time, seeing out this trip very strongly. On pedigree she should be fine at this trip and has a touch more experience than some of her rivals, although she lacks Classic experience.
EVEN SO CAMELOT (GB) - BREEZE HILL
HHH Trained by GER LYONS
This daughter of Camelot took the Oaks Trial at Naas last time, beating Laburnum, who reopposes again today. She was a fine fifth in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas and this trip should bring out the best in her.
LABURNUM GALILEO - SECRET GARDEN
HHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN
Only a neck behind Even So in the Oaks Trial last time, she’s very unexposed after only two runs and can count Roderic O’Connor amongst her relations. She needs to take a step up but fits a similar mould to recent Classic winners.
NEW YORK GIRL NEW APPROACH - ANNEE LUMIERE
HH Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN
Tried in the Irish Derby last time, she ran an eye catching race in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and it looked as if this step up in trip would suit. She was held up last time and it’s tough to know whether she got the trip, so she’s worth another go here.
PASSION GALILEO - DIALAFARA (FR)
HH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN
A decent fifth in the Epsom Oaks, she ran a good race which backed up her fair performance in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. She’s only won one of her starts but is related to smart types Capri and Cypress Creek so there could be more to come.
YAXENI (FR) MAXIOS (GB) - KITHONIA (FR)
HH Trained by GER LYONS
A winner on debut at Cork, she’s ran decent races in Group 3’s the last twice and is unexposed, but she’ll need to take a considerable step up as she takes a big rise in class. 38

STAR CATCHER Fresh from Group 2 success at Royal Ascot, Star Catcher made all to land the Classic for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Taking full advantage of all her stamina, Dettori had the daughter of Sea The Stars in the prime position to lead from start to finish and she won in fine style by half a length from Fleeting back in second. The pair were well clear of Pink Dogwood in third and subsequent Irish St Leger hero Search For A Song back in fourth. 39
THE FORM
With this race ran in it’s usual spot a number of the key races that take place before this are relevant for our form study today. Races from Royal Ascot and Epsom take centre stage but as we’ve seen very recently, Classic winners can come from anywhere.
INVESTEC OAKS Love was in a total league of her own but Ennisytmon got closest, finishing nine lengths back in second. Passion was a good way back in fifth and although it was a remote fifth, there was considerable promise. It’s tough to see the form being reversed though.
ALWASMIYAH PRETTY POLLY STAKES The class of Magical was clear to see back in June, but one of the market leaders for the Juddmonte Irish Oaks ran with considerable promise back in second. Cayenne Pepper kept on best of all to take second, four and a half lengths behind Magical, but she beat the talented Fleeting and that performance came on her seasonal debut, so there must be more to come.
THE VERDICT A tough race to work out, but on paper there are a few that appear clear of the rest. Of the outsiders, Yaxeni is unexposed enough to warrant a second look but she looks held on form, finishing behind Snow in the Munster Oaks at Cork. They were both behind One Voice in the Blue Wind at Leopardstown and need to take a big step up to figure in this Classic. Passion looks set to make the running, and Laburnum could be one to watch up in class and trip. She was beaten by Even So in the Oaks Trial at Naas two weeks ago but fillies from the yard can make big leaps of improvement from run to run and she may be overlooked in the market. Cayenne Pepper and Ennisytmon both have very strong form claims, with the former four lengths off a returning Magical in the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly last time out. Ennistymon got closest to Love in the Epsom Oaks and is more unexposed than her main market rival.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has a typically strong squad for this and it is ENNISTYMON, who has had to settle for a supporting role at Royal Ascot and then behind stablemate Love in the Oaks, who could get her moment in the spotlight. Passion did well to finish fifth at Epsom considering the pace she set in the early stages, and strengthens the Ballydoyle hand alongside Munster Oaks winner Snow. Cayenne Pepper ran the perfect trial for this when chasing home Magical for second in the Pretty Polly Stakes and is another who has to be taken seriously.

Run as a normal handicap, the riders can claim allowances dependent on the amount of winners they have ridden, and some star names on the flat and over jumps have won this race in recent years. Megan Nicholls landed the race last year aboard Perfect Papatino for Joseph O’Brien after Moonmeister’s disqualifiaction. Lisa O’Neill had won the previous two renewals, with Batts Rock in 2018 and Miles To Memphis in 2017 for trainers Gordon Elliott and Denise Foster respectively. Helen Mooney took the race in 2016 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, with Nina Carberry winning for Tommy Stack in 2015 on Tooreen Legend. Alice Mills was victorious in 2014 with Wither Hills and French jockey Jessica Marcialis won in 2013 for Adrian McGuinness aboard Beau Michael. 17 go to post this year, with Lisa O’Neill riding Dalileo for Johnny Murtagh and Aine O’Connor taking the ride on Walking On Glass for Padraig Roche.

CURRAGH COMMENT WALKING ON GLASS won with plenty in hand on his return to the Flat last month and the son of Big Bad Bob merits the utmost respect this evening, despite a 9lb rise in the ratings. Tonkinese is an obvious threat to the selection having won the Apprentice Derby over C&D recently, while Wajaaha also makes the shortlist following his easy win at Limerick 19 days ago. Others to consider are On The Balcony and Princess Zoe.
