Good Afternoon and welcome to the Curragh for our opening meeting of the year, Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire Day. We are delighted to be back opening the flat season again and what better way to do than with a really exciting card with plenty of quality on show. The feature race, the Paddy Power Lincolnshire Handicap promises to be a real cracker. We would like to thank Paddy Power for their continued support of the Curragh which means so much to us. I would also like to thank Gary Duffy of Irish Emerald Stud and Brian Purcell of Big Picture Communications for their generous sponsorship. Sponsors makes an invaluable contribution to racing through the prize fund which is so important to the owners. It is so disappointing that we can’t welcome you back in person to the Curragh. The facility is looking great, and we look forward to having you back to enjoy it at some stage during the season. In the meantime, we look forward to engaging with you through the various channels. In addition to Racing TV, you can follow today’s action on TG4. You can also follow it through our various social media channels. Following the success last year, we have upgraded our digital card for this season, and I hope that you enjoy it. We are very fortunate to host so much good racing in the Curragh. This is only possible through the support of the owners. It is a big disappointment that we can’t welcome you here today, but we would like to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. The grooms play a very import role in racing as they care for the horses that our sport is all about. I would like to thank Moyglare Stud who sponsor the catering for stable staff at every meeting at the Curragh. TRM also sponsor prizes for grooms in charge of horses judged to be best turned out in all our races this season together with supporting the Best Turned Out Winners Draw which is always an important feature of the Curragh. These are two very important partnerships for us, and we are very grateful to them both for their support. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

SANTIAGO TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier SIRE: Authorized (IRE) DAM: Wadyhatta (GB) BREEDER: Lynch Bages Ltd
Aidan O’Brien has more top-class horses in Ballydoyle than most trainers could dream of. Santiago, particularly, is interesting as connections plot which big races he’ll be targeted at this season. An Irish Derby winner, it’s likely his trip will remain a mile and a half, but his good runs in both the Goodwood Cup and the English St Leger would suggest a longer trip isn’t out of the question. Ballydoyle wouldn’t have many sons of Authorized in training, so Santiago is a precious commodity in the bloodstock world as they seek a Galileo-outcross.

CURRAGH COMMENT With no form to go on at all the market will be a key guide but the marginal preference is for FREEDOM OF SPEECH, who is out of a mare that won over 6f on her debut as a two-year-old. That makes this filly a half-sister to the useful 5f juvenile winner Moments Linger and she has to be given plenty of respect. The £130,000 purchase Cadamosto is an obvious threat given that her dam also scored over 6f as a two-year-old, while Silver Surfer and Turn On The Jets are others who merit consideration.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

WEMBLEY TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: Derrick Smith SIRE: Galileo (IRE) DAM: Inca Princess (IRE) BREEDER: Coolmore
A Coolmore homebred, Wembley is a typically hardy type of Ballydoyle horse that excels from the step up from two to three. Although it took him four goes to get off the mark, which he eventually did at Roscommon, that experience was but to good use when he finished second in both the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. He’s well-related, with all of his racing siblings gaining black type of some sort, and the step up in trip that should be forthcoming this season will bring out the very best in him. He holds an entry in all the Classics, Irish and English, and it’s likely that he’s a big player in all of those races. Aidan O’Brien tends to give his best chances in the Classics a run before their big engagements, so don’t be surprised to see him out sooner rather than later, trodding the familiar Derby Trials path as so many of his stable predecessors.

CURRAGH COMMENT A few of these are on retrieval missions, namely Indigo Balance, Gobi Desert and Summer Sands, with the latter yet to justify his lofty price tag. There is still time for all of them, while Grammata has to be of interest on her handicap debut after keeping good company as a juvenile. PRETTY BOY FLOYD burst back into life when returned to Sarah Dawson last autumn and he seems to excel at this venue, and in testing conditions, so he gets the nod.

KEY CURRAGH CONTESTS MOYGLARE STUD STAKES One of the premier races for two-year-old fillies, last year’s race saw a clash of two great fillies. Donnacha O’Brien’s Shale and Joseph O’Brien’s Pretty Gorgeous clashed over the seven furlong trip, with the former coming out on top by nearly a length. Shale turned the tables on her rival from their run in the Debutante Stakes, but was laboured when the pair clashed again at Newmarket. The two are likely to take eachother on again in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and possibly even the Irish Oaks, although Shale looks the liklier of the two to enjoy the trip. ALAN SMURFIT MEMORIAL BERESFORD STAKES This mile contest for two-year-olds is always one to watch with keen interest. Given the record of Ballydoyle in the race, it was no surprise to see High Definition justify favourtism and win well under Seamie Heffernan. A full-brother to the talented Innisfree, who we haven’t seen since his two-year-old days, High Definition came with a powerful late run on the outside to run down the field and defy his poor starting position to win nicely, a result which has sees him a short price for the Derby. Mile and a half races look sure to be on his agenda this season, so watch out if he turns up in an Irish Derby. He looks to have everything going for him.
20
COOLMORE MAGNA GRECIA IRISH EBF MOORESBRIDGE STAKES An early season Group 2, this race gives the perfect stepping stone for those middle-distance horses who are looking to take the step up in class and compete at a higher level later in the year. Leo De Fury took the race last year for Jessica Harrington from the smart filly Fleeting, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some of the big guns make their seasonal debuts in this race, as it falls well in the racing calendar. The race was upgraded to Group 2 status recently, and that faith has been rewarded by the likes of Minding, Cliffs Of Moher and Magical winning the race since it’s promotion to Group 2 level.
GAIN RAILWAY STAKES Mid-July sees the Railway Stakes, a six furlong Group 2 for some of the more precocious two-year-olds in training. 2019 winner Siskin stands out as one of the stars to come from the race, but last year’s winner Laws Of Indices could be one to follow. He belied odds of 66/1 to fend off the smart Lucky Vega, and although he reversed the form in the Phoenix Stakes, Laws Of Indicies is still one to keep on side in his three-year-old season. Ken Condon has a smart group of horses for the season, with this one of the bigger chances in some of the top races at the Curragh.

CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Dermot Weld Dermot Weld is one of Ireland’s most successful racehorse trainers. A qualified vet, he was the country’s leading Amateur rider on three occasions. He has been based on the Curragh at Rosewell House for over forty years. He has trained over four-thousand winners worldwide on The Curragh Training Grounds. Vintage Crop’s historic win, in the 1993 Melbourne Cup, meant Dermot became the first European trainer to win the “race that stops a nation”. He is still the only European trainer to have won a leg of the American Triple Crown after Go And Go’s win in the Belmont Stakes. Dermot has had multiple winners at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival including Rite Of Passage winning the Ascot Gold Cup in 2010. In 2016, Harzand won the Epsom Derby and completed the Derby double at the Curragh three weeks later. 22

CURRAGH COMMENT JOAN OF ARC, who is a full-sister to Classic winners Gleneagles and Marvellous, is hard to oppose following her very promising debut performance at Dundalk in November. With that experience now under her belt, the daughter of Galileo should be very hard to beat. Giuliana made the frame in the Anglesey Stakes here in October, but it is a slight concern than she was beaten back in maiden company the following month. Emilie Gray is out of a dual Group 3 winner and is the pick of the newcomers, while Soilse completes the shortlist.

VAN GOGH TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: M Tabor & D Smith & Mrs John Magnier SIRE: American Pharoah (USA) DAM: Imagine (IRE) BREEDER: Barronstown Stud
Very few horses win a Group 1 in heavy ground by four lengths, but Van Gogh did exactly that at Saint-Cloud. Another Ballydoyle horse who ran well in pattern races as a maiden, he finally got off the mark at the Curragh and backed up that run with a fine second in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket. Held at a mile for the Criterium International in October 2020, he saw off his five rivals in imperious style under Pierre-Charles Boudot, travelling perfectly and winning easily. That heavy ground performance convinced anyone who thought he had stamina doubts, and he has a smart pedigree. By American Pharoah, he’s out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, so with that pedigree it’s not hard to see him reaching the very top level of racing. Races over a mile and a half are on his agenda this year.

CURRAGH COMMENT DUKE OF MANTUA won on his final start of 2020 when successful at Gowran Park in September and that form has since been franked by the runner-up. Aidan O’Brien has won two of the last eight renewals and it is interesting that Ryan Moore comes over for the ride. Erzindjan was deemed good enough for Group 3 company at Leopardstown when last seen and may well appreciate these calmer waters, while Rave N Contagion is another who can’t be dismissed.
WIN: DUKE OF MANTUA
DANGER: ERZINDJAN
THE MADRID HANDICAP The Madrid Handicap was first run in 1813 when Luxima landed one of the most historic races in the Irish racing calendar. Previous winners include subsequent Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Star Appeal in 1973 and Awtaad who landed the race for Curragh-based trainer Kevin Prendergast in 2016.

Few horses win one Irish St Leger, let alone two. Dermot Weld has trained the Irish St Leger superstar duo of Vinnie Roe and Vintage Crop, and now he can add Search For A Song to that list. A well-bred filly, she demonstrated class that few horses have when bouncing back from three below par runs to win her second Irish St Leger in fine style on day two of Irish Champions Weekend 2020. Her victory have Oisin Orr his first Classic and Group 1 winner and she has all the attributes in her favour as she goes for a third win in the Classic in 2021. She’ll face tough opposition this time around though, but she’s trained by the right man to make it three wins on the bounce in the Irish St Leger.

CURRAGH COMMENT HOROSCOPE ran with promise on both his starts as a juvenile, most notably when runner-up at Leopardstown in October, and the son of No Nay Never has been found an excellent opportunity to go one better. Salvucci may not have benefited from the quick turnaround when sixth at Leopardstown over a mile last time out and he has to be respected dropping back in trip, while Probe, whose dam won twice at Group 3 level for connections, appeals most of the newcomers.

THE PADDY POWER IRISH LINCOLNSHIRE 2020 When racing returned to the Curragh following the restart of racing, it did so without the pictured crowds, hustle and bustle of the day or the original racing schedule. With the season starting later in the year on Friday 12th June, racing fans were treated to a day of superb racing. A maiden over a mile and two furlongs saw subsequent St Leger winner Galileo Chrome put his name in many notebooks as one to follow. Subsequent Matron Stakes winner Champers Elysees took the Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital Handicap under Danny Sheehy and Crossfirehurricane took a competitive renewal of the Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Gallinule Stakes. Racing fans enjoyed a treat, albeit from home, with the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, the first Classic of the season, won by Siskin and the Coolmore Magna Grecia Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes won by Leo De Fury. Today’s feature race, the Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire, was ran at this extra-ordinary June meeting last year. The race had a typically competitive look to it, with plenty of talk abot the hot favourite Tauran Shaman. The colt was taking a step

down in class since contesting the Group 2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp back in October 2019, and many though he was well-treated off a mark of 96. However, it was the Adrian McGuinness-trained Bowerman who came out on top under Ronan Whelan. An improving type, Bowerman came to the Curragh following a close second in a Listed race at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and was able to race off a mark of 97. He was given plenty of room throughout the race, and Whelan delivered his mount to perfection and win going away by two and a half lengths. Since, Bowerman has gone on to win a prestigious local Group 2 in Qatar (pictured), proving that the Curragh is the breeding ground of champions! Colfer Me finished second on what was a good day for Ken Condon, with Luke Comer’s Broad Street taking third place on the line from Bowerman’s stablemate Saltonstall. Refresh your memory of the race and view the replay below.

Without question Johnny Murtagh’s stable star, Champers Elysees is a familiar horse to Curragh fans. On day two of Irish Champions Weekend 2019 she was a fine sixth in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale Stakes, and she followed that up with a win in an auction race two weeks later She made her 2020 seasonal debut at the Curragh, landing a competitive three-year-old handicap over seven furlongs, which she back up with a win in Listed company at Galway. The wins kept coming, culminating in a win in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on day one of Irish Champions Weekend. She is set to make her seasonal debut at the Curragh in either the Athasi Stakes (seven furlongs) or the Lanwades Stud Stakes ( a mile). 46

CURRAGH COMMENT The ultra-consistent LAYFAYETTE has rattled the crossbar twice since scoring over 10 furlongs at Naas last summer and Noel Meade’s four-year-old could be the answer dropping back in trip here in first-time cheekpieces. Last year’s winning handler Adrian McGuinness saddles two interesting recruits from John Gosden in Casanova and Godhead, while Ger Lyons also has a solid record in this, which brings Maker Of Kings into calculations. Teed Up is yet to finish out of the top two and is very much heading in the right direction. He is of real interest, with Laughifuwant, Lobo Rojo, Mirann and Gee Rex others to consider in a typically competitive renewal.

SANTA BARBARA TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: Mrs John Magnier/Michael Tabor/Derrick Smith/Westerberg SIRE: Camelot (GB) DAM: Senta’s Dream (GB) BREEDER: Whisperview Trading Ltd
Camelot has enjoyed a fine first few seasons standing at Coolmore Stud, and Santa Barbara could be a three-year-old filly to really put him on the map as a sire. A winner of her only start over a mile, she won that easily under Seamie Heffernan, giving the impression much more improvement would be forthcoming as a three-year-old. She looks a big hope for both the English and Irish Oaks, given her pedigree, and she can list Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Order Of Australia and Fillies Mile, Pretty Polly and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Iridessa in her pedigree. Up and coming breeders Westerberg recently bought into her in association with the Coolmore partners, and that is just another sign of confidence behind this potentially star filly.

CURRAGH COMMENT DUNDORY boasts winning course form over 1m2f on heavy ground from November and performed creditably on the all-weather at Dundalk during the winter. Colin Keane is booked and he should be keeping on strongly in the closing stages now dropped in trip. MAKE A CHALLENGE TRAINER: Denis Hogan OWNER: M G Hogan, Walter O’Connor & James Joseph Reilly SIRE: Invincible Spirit (IRE) DAM: Crinoline (USA) BREEDER: Godolphin
Denis Hogan’s stable star has been one of the feel-good stories of Irish racing in the last few years. Purchased as a Godolphin cast-off for just £6,500, Make A Challenge improved drastically over the past few seasons. His first win came at Fairyhouse off a mark of just 68 in May 2019, and in the 2019 season he racked up a series of impressive wins, improving to round off his season with a win in the Listed Waterford Testimonial Stakes at the Curragh. His 2020 season kicked off in Doha, and he landed a series of Listed races over the course of the season, culiminating in a close fifth in the Flying Five on day two of Irish Champions Weekend. Top sprints remain on his agenda, and connections will have a fun season wth this improving type.

CURRAGH COMMENT THE LAST KNIGHT was making his handicap debut when a decent fourth at Dundalk in November and the handicapper seems to have taken a real chance in dropping him 4lb for his return to action. Ger Lyons’ charge looks the one to side with, though Sunset Nova has race fitness on his side and cannot be left out of calculations. Caesar’s Comet had a number of today’s rivals behind when running a good second at Dundalk last time and he merits respect. Jim Bolger’s Naas winner Breaking News would be a big player if getting a run.
