Good afternoon and welcome to the Curragh for our second meeting of the year. We have a total of 21 meetings at the Curragh this year and once we get going after our winter break the action comes very quickly. Today’s card is very exciting with a lovely mix of racing. Everything from maidens for two-year-olds, three-year-old maidens, handicaps and two Group 3 races, with something for everyone. We have three great sponsors this afternoon and I would like to thank them for their continued support of the Curragh. Our principal sponsor is TRI who are great partners of ours. Their Superstore and Café is beside us and it is a great place to meet everybody from the industry. In addition to their race sponsorship, their colleagues in TRM sponsor the Best Turned Out Winners Draw at the end of season. Holdens Plant Hire are important partners of ours and we are delighted to see them sponsoring the Group 3 Alleged Stakes today. The Irish EBF sponsor the two-year-old maidens this afternoon, they are Irish racing’s biggest sponsor and we are very grateful to them. Sponsors makes an invaluable contribution to racing through the prize fund which is so important to the owners. It is so disappointing that we can’t welcome you back in person to the Curragh. The facility is looking great, and we look forward to having you back to enjoy it at some stage during the season. In the meantime, we look forward to engaging with you through the various channels. All our racing is covered on Racing TV and you can also follow it through our various social media channels. Our digital card is proving very popular, make sure to use it and I hope that you enjoy it. Racing at the Curragh is only possible with the support of the owners. It is a big disappointment that we can’t welcome you here today, but we would like to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. The grooms play a very import role in racing as they care for the horses that our sport is all about. I would like to thank Moyglare Stud who sponsor the catering for stable staff at every meeting at the Curragh. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

Michael O’Callaghan Michael O’Callaghan trains at Crotanstown Stud based on The Curragh and has enjoyed much success in the training ranks since taking out his licence in 2012. Hailing from Tralee in Co.Kerry there was no direct family background in horse racing initially. Michael has amassed great experience in the industry working for the likes of Tom Cooper, Coolmore and Castlehyde Stud. He is also an award-winning graduate of the Irish National Stud Course. He has shown a notable knack for buying relatively inexpensive yearlings and breeze-up horses that go on to excel on the racecourse. Blue De Vega, Now or Never and more recently Steel Bull some fine examples of very talented horses bought and trained by O’Callaghan all of which won Group races, the former pair also placed in the 2,000 and 1,000 Irish Guineas respectively. 8

2020 - No corresponding meeting last year.

CURRAGH COMMENT GAIRE OS ARD displayed plenty of promise when finishing second to an exciting prospect on her debut over 5f at Naas last month. With that experience now under her belt, the daughter of Teofilo should take plenty of stopping. Castle Star has a similar profile to the selection, having hit the crossbar on his first outing at Cork, and he could prove to be the main danger. Others to note are Glounthaune and Albion Square.

WIN: GAIRE OS ARD

DANGER: CASTLE STAR

WHO WERE GLADNESS AND ALLEGED? Two of today’s races are named after famous racehorses, both of which were trained by legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien. Gladness was a brown mare foaled in 1953. Sired by Sayajirao, a full brother to 1945 Epsom Derby winner Dante, she was out of the mare Bright Lady who was herself sired by a Derby winner in April The Fifth. Gladness was one of Vincent O’Brien’s earliest top perfomers on the flat, and her owner John McShain also owned Irish Derby, St Leger and Prix de l’Arc de Triomph winner Ballymoss. Gladness herself was equally as talented on the track, winning the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Ebor Handicap in the mid 1950’s, marking herself as one of the top staying horses in Europe. Alleged’s success came a few decades later at the height of O’Brien’s flat training career. His sire was Hoist The Flag, a champion sire in the United States, out of the mare Princess Pout. While originally slated to go to race in the United States, joint-owner Robert Sangster sent the colt to Vincent O’Brien at Ballydoyle in 1976. Alleged made a winning debut over seven furlongs at the Curragh, before causing an upset in the Royal Whip Stakes, beating Classic-winning stablemates in a hot race. Rested for the early English and Irish Classics, Alleged made his return to the track in the St Leger before going on to win the 1977 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He raced on at four, winning the Royal Whip again before coming back to win a prep race for a second crack at the Arc, which he easily won again in 1978.

CURRAGH COMMENT CADAMOSTO created a taking impression when a winning debutant at Dundalk last week. Aidan O’Brien’s No Nay Never colt put the race to bed with ease during that eyecatching opening effort and is fancied to enhance his reputation. Missing Matron was an impressive scorer on testing ground when debuting over C&D in March. She can keep the selection honest if proving just as effective on this sounder surface, while Benevolent and Cheerupsleepyjean may prove best of the newcomers.

RACE TWO

An Oasis Dream filly who cost £25,000 as a yearling and is a half-sister to Notre Belle Bete, who was fourth in 7f Listed race on debut. Represents a top local team and respected. Star Rating 3

THE TRI EQUESTRIAN GLADNESS STAKES First ran in 1963, the TRI Equestrian Gladness Stakes has had a few changes to the conditions down the years. The first renewal of the race was ran over a mile and a quarter, shortened to a mile in 1964 and cut further to seven furlongs in 1970 when it was won by Nijinsky (pictured), with it remaining over the specalist trip ever since. Upgraded to Group 3 level in 1987, it was ran as an open age contest for many years before being closed to three-year-olds in 2004. 10 years later it was made available to three-year-olds and above, and it’s been an open age contest ever since. Vincent O’Brien dominated this race from 1970 to 1990, winning first with Nijinksy and taking the race wih Lomond, El Gran Senor and Great Lakes his final winner in 1990. In recent years, the race has been won by a variety of trainers. Aidan O’Brien has won the race recently with Excelebration (pictured) and Lancaster House last year. Kevin Prendergast trained two time winner Mustameet to success under Declan McDonogh in 2005 and 2007, with Tommy Stack also training two winners in 2011 and 2016 with Lolly for Dolly and Onenightidreamed respectively.

20

The 2020 renewal was ran in June, following the resumption of racing after the initial shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lightly-raced Lancaster House made a winning return to the track under Seamie Heffernan, seeing off five rivals in fine style. Sent to the front early under Heffernan, Lancaster House was clear at the halfway stage and just had to be pushed along slightly to maintain his lead a furlong out. He kept up to his work well though and made use of his stamina over seven furlongs, drawing away further in the closing stages to make a smooth and winning return to action. Joseph O’Brien’s Speak In Colours was sent off favourite but could only manage second under Shane Crosse, with Jim Bolger’s Smash Williams back in third. CURRAGH COMMENT Lancaster House got the better of Speak In Colours in the 2020 running of this and both make plenty of appeal once again, with the former likely to appreciate the drop back to 7f and slightly calmer waters. The raiding Brad The Brief is foolish to leave out of calculations, as is C&D winner Know It All. However, a chance is taken on FISCAL RULES, who has been up and down the distances throughout his career, but made a pleasing reappearance when second over 6f in a Listed contest at Cork. Capable course scorer Lustown Baba was fourth there and is also noted.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

THE HOLDEN PLANT RENTAL ALLEGED STAKES A relatively new addition to the racing calendar, the Alleged Stakes was first ran in 2003, with the inaugural renewal won by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Black Sam Bellamy with Mick Kinane in the saddle. The early years of the race saw Johnny Murtagh ride back to back winnes in 2005 and 2006 with Sublimity and Arch Rebel respectively. Parish Hall (pictured) was victorious twice under Kevin Manning for Jim Bolger, winning in 2013 and 2015, with his treble denied in 2014 by Denis Hogan’s Inish Meain and John Oxx’s Tarana, who finished first and second respectively. In the 2010’s, the race has acted as the perfect starting point for Ireland’s top 10 and 12 furlong horses, with talented mare Zhukova, winner in 2016, taking the race on her seasonal debut before going on to follow up in the Group 1 Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park the following year. Air Pilot became the first, and so far only, winner of the race trained in the United Kingdom when prevailing in 2017 under Fran Berry. Irish Derby winner Capri made a winning seasonal debut when landing this in 2018, with Magical (pictured) making it back to back wins in the race for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien in 2019.

26

In 2020 we saw a clash between three in the race, with the Joseph O’Brien-trained Buckhurst coming out on top over favourite Sir Dragonet in second and stablemate Numerian back in third. While there were only three runners, the race was a fascinating contest, with Buckhurst making all under Wayne Lordan and Sir Dragonet coming from the back of the pack under Seamie Heffernan. Numerian settled in second under Declan McDonogh and was outclassed back in third, but the first two home had an interesting battle up front, with Buckhurst using his superior stamina to see off his rival and win by a length and a half, with the result never really in doubt. CURRAGH COMMENT BROOME returned to action with a victory at Naas, beating In From The Cold (fourth), Numerian (fifth), Up Helly Aa (sixth), Helvic Dream (eighth), Njord (ninth) and King Of Comedy (10th) in the process. Aidan O’Brien’s runners tend to improve with each run at this point in the season so it’s hard to see how his five-year-old can’t add another Group 3 success to his tally. Bowerman struck over a mile at Doha in February but is already a Group 3 winner over this sort of trip at Dundalk, while Thundering Nights was a rapidly improving filly last season and can make an impact on her comeback.

CURRAGH COMMENT Plenty of these have claims but preference is for WORDSWORTH, who only found the subsequent Group 2 winner and current ante-post Derby favourite High Definition too good on his debut over a mile here in August. The extra couple of furlongs today should suit this full-brother to Kew Gardens and it would be no surprise to see him play a leading role. Agrimony, Eternal Flame and Zaynudin are others with strong form claims, while Theory Of Music and Azallya are interesting newcomers.

CURRAGH COMMENT NEVER FORGOTTEN got off the mark at the third time of asking last July at Gowran Park and might have been let in lightly here on handicap debut for Joseph O’Brien. She beat the now 103-rated So Wonderful nine months ago and, off 89, must hold a good chance on reappearance wearing a first-time tongue-tie. Hightimeyouwon shaped well on his first start of the season when fifth at Naas last month, while Fastnet Crown is unexposed and might also go close.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien gives 1.8million guineas purchase Blue Planet his first run of the year here and he could build on a promising Dundalk third on debut, but NOTORIOUSLY RISKY has the advantage of a recent run here. Fozzy Stack’s filly missed out by the narrowest of margins in that Naas reappearance and could come on for that outing. Saatty ran well for second on debut over 7f here, with Valhalla’s Dream third, and shaped as though this drop in trip would suit, while Phantom Power and Shikoko look the pick of the older horses.

WIN: NOTORIOUSLY RISKY

CURRAGH COMMENT LORD DUDLEY was a career-best third at Naas last month over 5f and shaped there as though a slight step up in trip might reap some serious rewards. The Pride Of Dubai gelding is on a fair handicap mark of 58 and the booking of Colin Keane suggests that connections mean business. Misterio (fifth) shaped better than the bare result suggested at Dundalk 36 days ago, while Brave Display and Teddy Boy are also considered.
