The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION BY CHAD YEOMANS
1
The opening contest is a maiden race for two year olds over 6f. Aidan O’Brien has won this four times since 2011 and the master trainer saddles the unraced The Acropolis here. First time sire Churchill isn’t pulling up trees with his early runners, but that is to be expected and it’s when his progeny step up in trip that we may see the best of them. It’s obviously unknown how good unraced horses may be, but he needs to be going close in this if he’s to be considered for Royal Ascot next month. Fozzy Stack saddles Thunder Eclipse with Chris Hayes aboard and the pair, who finished third on his debut over course and distance, set the standard on all known form and with that experience in the bag, the Holy Roman Emperor colt should be hard to beat. He was well-supported on his debut, suggesting he’d shown his connections something at home prior to his first start on a racecourse and market support here should be monitored.

It won’t take the best form student to work out that Glen Shiel is going to take all of the beating if he’s fit enough to do himself justice on his first start of the season. He improved no end last season, with this campaign culminating in with a Group 1 success at Ascot’s Champions Day, which clearly sets the standard. However, he does have a Group 1 penalty to carry and at his likely short price, there will be some alternative each way options that will appeal more. Make A Challenge will relish softer conditions and is a dual course and distance winner. He didn’t seem to get into the race last Sunday following a slow start, but that often happens in sprint races and granted a good start, he could play a part. Summerghand has been in the form of his life of late. He won the Betway All-Weather Sprint Final at Lingfield in early April and backed that success up with a comfortable victory in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket a couple of weeks later. He travelled best of all in a stronger race at York, where he managed to finish fourth last time out, and does have form on soft ground. He could also be doing his best work late on under Colin Keane.
4
A field of 12 have been declared for the first Irish classic of the season, with the antepost market headed by Lucky Vega, who many deemed unlucky at Newmarket in the English equivalent three weeks ago. With his best form on a quicker surface, he’s going to be vulnerable and could be worth taking on with Wembley, who has been the races biggest market mover this week. He didn’t handle the Newmarket undulations on ground that was rattling quick, but he’ll have conditions in his favour here and won’t be too far away. His two yar old form is excellent and this son of Galileo was always going to make into a better three year old. It’ll be some training performance if Jim Bolger manages saddle Poetic Flare to victory. In the space of three weeks, this is going to be his third Guineas race, after winning the English version and running well in the French running last weekend. His trainer has waxed lyrical about him and has always held him in the highest regard, so it’s no surprise to see him lining up again. At a bigger price, Agrimony, should be given a second look at. He won well last time out, albeit in a maiden, and he also has form on soft ground. His second to Wordsworth could look very smart by the end of the season and he is the type to outrun his odds.
5
There wasn’t many horses who had improved the amount that Champers Elysees did last season. Having started her season off a mark of 86, she ended it on a mark of 115, after a narrow defeat in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. She’s another horse who has good form on soft ground and following her prep run over 7f last time out, she is expected to come on for that and be very tough to beat for local trainer Johnny Murtagh. With just seven runners going to post, there are only two places on offer and that second place could go the way of Roca Roma who although has a bit to find on official ratings, has always been highly though of and is the type to improve with racing. She is still lightly raced, but she ran well on her recent comeback and looked as though she will strip fitter for that.
6
A 14 strong field have been declared for the Betway Spring Fillies Handicap; a race for three year olds run over a mile. Turning out quickly following a run last Sunday, Boyne River, who suffered multiple traffic problems at Naas, will be of huge interest under Declan McDonagh. She’s still a maiden after four starts but hasn’t been disgraced on any of her racecourse appearances and has often shaped as though a very strongly run mile would suit her well. Her connections are trying a tongue-tie on her for the first time. Create Belief was an impressive winner of a one mile maiden at Gowran Park in April on soft ground. Her connections opted to run her in the listed Salsabil Stakes at Navan on her next start, and while she wasn’t disgraced, you got the feeling that 1m2f on quicker ground, may just have been a little too much for her at this stage in her career. She drops back to a mile here and will appreciate the rain softened ground and can go well under Ben Coen.
7
Just the 27 go to post for the Betway Handicap over 6f. As ever with these big field sprint handicaps, there are plenty of horses with chances, but you need plenty of luck in running. Zephron won well over course and distance last time out but would need to improve again to win off a mark of 84, which isn’t totally inconceivable. Verhoyen was an eye-catcher at Naas on his comeback run earlier this month and on his best-known form, is looking very well handicapped off his current mark of 82. He’ll like the conditions. Geometrical was well thought of as a two year old and ran in two Group 1 races! Things clearly were amiss last season, but if he’s back in good form know, he is very well handicapped off a mark of 93 and could be too talented for his rivals. Chessman often runs well at The Curragh and will relish softer conditions. He’ll run well and could run into a place.
8
The last race on day one of the Irish Guineas festival is the Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap, a race for three year olds over 7f. Montego Bay was a winner at Naas two weeks ago and looked that day as if it was starting to come together for her. She has steadily improved with racing and will be popular under Ryan Moore. Others to note include Colfer Kay who looks ready for this step up in trip. She’s found sprinting a little too fast for her this season and could improve for her first crack at 7f. Inca Prince is another who go could very well. Having his first start for CWJ Farrell’s yard, following a switch from Henry de Bromhead’s stable. He’s lightly raced and still exposed but was smart enough to win on debut last September, which always requires a certain level of natural ability.

SANTA CLAUS TRAINER: Mick Rogers OWNER: John Ismay SIRE: Chamossaire (GB) DAM: Aunt Clara (GB) BREEDER: Dr F Smorfitt
The first of our legendary Irish 2,000 Guineas winners is certainly a special one. Santa Claus was bred in England but was trained on the Curragh by Mick Rogers, son of Darby Rogers who purchased the horse with owner John Ismay. His first run on the track came at the Curragh in the Anglesey Stakes but he never figured and it wasn’t until a storming success in the National Stakes that Santa Claus put his name into the ring for the next year’s Classics. In winning the National Stakes, he demolished Mesopotamia, a horse who had won the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and had himself been touted as a future star, by an eight length margin There were concerns over Santa Claus’ ability going into his three-year-old campaign. Not a typically flashy horse, he was described as lightly framed and disjointed in the build up to his Classic tests, but those fears were quickly put to bed. He routed the field in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at his beloved Curragh and looked to hold all the cards in the Derby at Epsom next. He delivered in front of a huge crowd, beating a subsequent St Leger winner, and returned to the Curragh to complete the Epsom-Curragh Derby double.

THE PAT SMULLEN JOCKEYS’ ROOM The Board of the Curragh Racecourse are delighted to introduce the Pat Smullen Jockeys’ Room this weekend. Pat was a true legend, and his achievements speak for themselves. He was Champion Jockey on no fewer than 9 occasions and rode almost 2,000 winners worldwide. He was stable jockey to Dermot Weld for 20 years and the Curragh was his second home. Even after all his success at The Curragh as a jockey, it was out of the saddle that he had perhaps his finest day here when he was the driving force behind the Pat Smullen Champion’s Race on Irish Champions’ Weekend 2019. That is a day that will never be forgotten by those lucky enough to be there. It is very important that there should be a lasting memory of Pat in the Curragh so that we, and future generations can be reminded of his wonderful achievements. The Pat Smullen Jockeys’ Room tribute was designed by Frances and the family with inputs from many of Pat’s friends and colleagues. It is fitting that the first day we will see it will be 22nd May, which is Pat’s birthday. There will be a formal opening of the Room when we welcome back attendees later in the summer.

BATTLEGROUND TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: M Tabor & D Smith & Mrs John Magnier SIRE: War Front (USA) DAM: Found (IRE) BREEDER: Orpendale, Chelston & Wyatt
Fewer horses on display today have the pedigree of Battleground. By top sire War Front, Battleground is out of the mare Found, herself trained by Aidan O’Brien. In her racing career, Found won Group 1’s at two, three and four, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2016, where she memorably led home an Aidan O’Brien-trained 1-2-3. Battleground has done his mother justice in his racing career so far, winning the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on only his second start and running a fine second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on his final two-year-old run. He can be forgiven for his run last time at Newmarket, which came in a hotly contested Guineas and was his first run of the season. He’s a fine looking colt who takes the eye in the parade ring, and back in Ireland for his first run at the Curragh he should put in a very different performance to the one at Newmarket a few weeks earlier.

SADLER’S WELLS TRAINER: Vincent O’Brien OWNER: Robert Sangster SIRE: Northern Dancer (CAN) DAM: Fairy Bridge (USA) BREEDER: Dr F Smorfitt
Sadler’s Wells is best known for the influence he has had on the thoroughbred as a breed, but he wasn’t a bad horse on the track. A horse which arguably started the many decades of dominance for the Sangster-O’Brien-Magnier empire, Sadler’s Wells would become a founding sire for the all conquering Coolmore operation. A winner of the Beresford Stakes as a two-year-old, Sadler’s Wells finished behind stablemate El Gran Senor on his seasonal reappearance in the Gladness Stakes. Stepped up in trip on his next start he convincingly won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial before dropping in trip to tackle the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Stable jockey Pat Eddery chose to ride stablemate Capture Him but Sadler’s Wells came out on top in a tight finish, seeing off his rivals close home to win the Classic. He then finished second behind Darshaan in a quality renewal of the French Derby where Rainbow Quest was third, and was kept to a mile and a quarter to win the Eclipse at Sandown on his next run. His battling nature saw him upped again in trip for the King George VI at Ascot, where he finished a credible second and his final racecourse win came in the Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. However, Sadler’s Wells will be best remembered for his career at stud. He sired Salsabil, Galileo, Milan, High Chaparral and Istabraq amongst many and can be credited with founding the thoroughbred line upon which we race today.

THE GAIN MARBLE HILL STAKES This race returns to the Curragh following a year where it was staged at Cork, as part of the racing calendar shift owing to the COVID pandemic. The race was first staged in 1967 and was ran over five furlongs until upped in trip to six for the 2017 renewal. The race is a recent upgrade to Group 3 status, and was ran for the first time as a Group 3 last year. For the first time this year, the race forms part of the new Champion Collection, a series of races sponsored by GAIN for the top juvenile horses. The series commenced with the First Flier Stakes, which was won by Fozzy Stack’s Castle Star, with this race as the next step and the series culminates with the Railway Stakes on Irish Derby day. The winning horse from the Railway Stakes receives free entry into the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. With this race ideal for the most precocious juvenile sprinters, it’s no surprise to see some of the top yards in Ireland with the best winning records. Aidan O’Brien has won this 11 times since 1999, with the likes of Power, Caravaggio and Fairyland particular highlights for Ballydoyle. Looking back further, Fasliyev won the race in 1999 under a fine ride from Mick Kinane, who won the race two years earlier onboard Golden Mirage for Mick Channon. Kinane would go on to ride three further winners of the race, while Fasliyev would progress to win the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix Morny, which led to him being named Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. In recent years, Power carried the Tabor silks to victory again in 2011 under Seamie Heffernan before following up in the National Stakes later in the year and then winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old.
34
Generational colt Caravaggio showed his potential when winning the race in 2016 and he would go on to have an unbeaten juvenile season where he won the Coventry Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes. An unbelievably quick horse, Caravaggio was one of the most exciting winners of the race, winning by two lengths and leaving the crowd in no doubt of his superstar potential. In 2019 Siskin took the Curragh by storm under Colin Keane. An easy winner on debut at Naas, Siskin was upped in class by Ger Lyons and ran out an impressive winner of this race over four smart rivals. With the Curragh his new stomping ground, Siskin returned to contest the GAIN Railway Stakes and was sent off an odds on favourite over the talented Monarch of Egypt, who was brushed aside by two and a half lengths. The natural progression was to the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, where he won a first Group 1, again comfortably from Monarch of Egypt. The rest is history, with his win in the Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old a first Classic win for Lyons and Keane. Take a look back on the 2019 renewal, when the race was last at the Curragh.

40 YEARS ON FROM 1981 KINGS LAKE by Sally Duckett, International Thoroughbred Forty years ago, Kings Lake won one of the most controversial renewals of the Irish 2,000 Guineas involving a stewards’ enquiry, intervention by the Turf Club as well as British and Irish rivalry between an English champion two-year-old and 2,000 Guineas winner and a well-bred colt from the dominating Vincent O’Brien stable. Kings Lake was by the great Nijinsky, the O’Brien-trained champion two-year-old of 1969 and the 1970 winner of the English Triple Crown, still the last horse to achieve that feat. Although Nijinsky was US-bred and was standing in Kentucky as he been trained in Ireland he was viewed by many in Ireland as one from home. By the early 1980s he was already the sire of two Irish St Leger winners, three US Grade 1 winners, a champion juvenile filly in France as well as the Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Green Dancer, but his commercial stallion CV was lacking a top three-year-old colt trained on his adopted Turf. Such a horse would also have significant stallion prospects in Europe. Kings Lake was bred by Lyonstown Stud, then owned by John Mulcahy, a US-Irish businessman who had emigrated to the US, made a business fortune and returned to his native Kerry in the 1960s. On returning home he put his business and Vincent O’Brien sporting acumen to the country’s good use aiming to halt the flow of human and equine talent from the Emerald Isle to the US. It was an ambition matched by O’Brien, with whom “Uncle Jack” had horses in training, and the pair set about rejuvenating Irish bloodstock by bringing exported bloodlines back from the US; it is legacy that has helped establish Irish bloodstock to the global position it enjoys today. In 1978, Mulcahy sent his mare Fish Bar, the dam of the Irish champion filly Cloonlara, to visit Nijinsky. The resulting colt was named Kings Lake, was owned by Madame J.P. Binet and sent into training with O’Brien. As a juvenile he had a light campaign running three times in the autumn winning his second and third starts. The colt wintered well but he was not initially seen as the Ballydoyle Guineas hope – at the time there was a certain champion two-year-old in the yard by Northern Dancer named Storm Bird. An unfortunate run of events ruled the Windfields Farm-bred colt out of a Classic
36
campaign; it meant that it was Kings Lake’s time to shine. After a first three-year-old start in the Ballymoss Stakes he was brought back to the mile for the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Ridden by Pat Eddery, his first Irish Classic ride retained by Ballydoyle, Kings Lake’s main challenger was the English hero To-Agori-Mou. The race at proved to be the most controversial of that British and Irish season. Through the race Eddery tracked the leaders before sending Kings Lake into the lead two furlongs out. He was almost immediately challenged on the outside by Greville Starkey aboard the English challenger. The tough colts raced together throughout the closing stages, in what has been termed a “desperate struggle”, and they went clear, but they bumped and made contact before Kings Lake crossed the line a neck in front, by then Starkey was standing up in his stirrups, no longer riding out the Guy Harwoodtrained bay. As the race commentator said: “It would not surprise me at all if the stewards called an enquiry” and the premonition proved correct. The race day stewards ruled that Kings Lake had caused interference to his opponent and, stunning the home crowd, they reversed the finish order and awarded the race to the British rival. O’Brien immediately launched a Turf Club appeal and two weeks later after a six-hour hearing (some sources say seven) the Turf Club overturned the decision and re-instated Kings Lake as the race winner. The decision created uproar with vociferous opinion voiced on both sides of the Irish Sea. “Hopping mad” was the headline in the Evening Press when reporting on Harwood’s reaction to the reversal. “It was a diabolical decision,” said Harwood. After the Curragh race the closely matched opponents met a further three times ending up with the honours split two apiece, but the on-course angst did not dissipate. When the two next met in Royal Ascot’s St James’s Palace Stakes (G1), after another “barnstorming battle” up the Ascot straight, Starkey on race winner To-Agori-Mou turned and appeared to make a certain two-fingered salute to Eddery. Kings Lake went on to win the autumn’s 1m2f Joe Guy Harwood McGrath Memorial Stakes (G1), then ran down the field in the Arc. He was retired five days later with a syndication valuation of £8 million (Irish). As an Irish 2,000 Guineas-winning son of the former Triple Crown hero, retired to stud in Ireland, he was a very attractive proposition for European breeders and investors. Sadly, the dream did not continue – Kings Lake produced just one Group 1 winner and has not left a pedigree legacy. But forty years ago the son of Nijinsky signed his name in the Irish 2,000 Guineas history book and was all the talk of the racing world.

CURRAGH COMMENT Cadamosto looked an exciting individual when running out an impressive winner of his first start at Dundalk last month but he will need to prove himself making his turf debut with ease in the surface. With that in mind, his stable companion, THE ENTERTAINER, appeals more. He is turned out quickly following his debut victory at Navan last week but his pedigree offers some hope that the ground shouldn’t prove to be much of a concern. 1991 FOURSTARS ALLSTAR TRAINER: Leo O’Brien OWNER: Richard Bomze and Philip Dileo SIRE: Compliance (USA) DAM: Broadway Joan (USA) BREEDER: Richard Bomze
In today’s world of Wesley Ward and his compatriots raiding Royal Ascot riches every year, American horses winning big races in the Northern Hemisphere has become common place. There was a time, however, not that long ago where American-trained horses ventured across the Atlantic on very rare occasions. One such occasion was in the case of Fourstars Allstar. The Irish 2,000 Guineas had been a plan in trainer Leo O’Brien’s mind for a while, and he moved the horse to Florida to train on the turf in preparation. Fourstars Allstar arrived in Ireland a few days before the Classic and was ridden by a young Mike Smith in his preparation. In a race that included the second and third from the Newmarket 2000 Guineas, American hopes rested on a relative outsider in a hot field. With his blue blinkers on, Fourstars Allstar settled well and was sent into an early lead, setting fair fractions out in front. Star of Gdansk and Christy Roche put up a strong challenge but the American horse fought back and overhauled his rival, who had overtaken him by the final furlong, to win by a head on the line. He returned to the States having conquered Europe but found life harder back in America, and it wasn’t until his four, five and six-year-old seasons that he regained the winning thread and landed a series of valuable handicaps.

The form of Monaasib’s third in the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial has been very well advertised. The winner, Poetic Flare, took the Newmarket Guineas and didn’t fire on a recent run in France, but Monaasib shaped as if he would improve for the run behind his rival and rated a big contender for the Prendergast team. Sired by Bobby’s Kitten, Monaasib hails from a fine family and has form over the mile distance, which too has been well advertised. He led for a long way in the Beresford Stakes on his last start as a juvenile and was only caught in the dying strides by High Definition, a recent third in the Dante at York and a short price for the Epsom Derby. Prendergast will surely have his mount in top form as he aims for another Classic.

In 2015 the race was upgraded to Group 2 level and restricted to horses aged four or older as part of a significant reshaping of the Irish sprinting programme. In recent years Slade Power (2014) and Merchant Navy (2018) have won this race before going to land the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. College Chapel completed the same double as the three-year-olds in 1993 while the 2000 winner Namid went on to win that year’s Prix de l’Abbaye. A sprint which has graced the Curragh for many years, the names Lester Piggott and Vincent O’Brien feature heavily on the roll of honour. O’Brien trained thirteen winners of the race between 1958 and 1994, with Piggott riding six winners, his final win also O’Brien’s with the win of College Chapel in 1994 who was winning the race for the secondyear running. The David Barron-trained Hitchens is the only other horse to win the race twice, with his victories in 2011 and 2013 gained under Fran Berry and Johnny Murtagh respectively. One of the most feelgood stories in recent years was the win of Gordon Lord Byron in 2017. Trained with dedication by Tom Hogan, the then nine-year-old was an outsider unde Chris Hayes but won smoothly, seeing off fellow veteran sprinters Suedois and Downforce further back in the field. The Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes was one of his 108 runs.

While the race was shifted back to June last year, we saw a typically competitive renewal. Rather unusually, the race was ran eight days after the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, but Speak In Colours made little of the short break and showed his class to win in a blanket finish. Pushed into a lead by Shane Crosse, who was riding the horse for only the second time, the dashing grey travelled strongly in customary style and looked to have the race sown up a furlong from home. However, out of the pack came Forever In Dreams and Buffer Zone, under Billy Lee and Colin Keane repsectively, and the race changed complexion instantly. Speak In Colours flattened and looked vulnerable, but the handy lead he’d built up paid off as he clung on by a head to the fast finishing Forever In Dreams, with Buffer Zone just getting going a little too late and finishing a further head back in third. Cast your mind back to June last year for the 2020 renewal with the replay below.

THE WEATHERBYS IRELAND GREENLANDS STAKES PREVIEW A dozen go to post for the Group 2 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, in which there is a strong British challenge. Penalised for his Group 1 success in the Qipco British Champion Sprint Stakes at Ascot last October, Glen Shiel has to concede weight to all 11 rivals, but showed a liking for this track when winning the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes last summer. In the form of his life last season, he also finished runner-up in the Sprint Cup at Haydock, and given his liking for soft ground, Hollie Doyle’s mount very much sets the standard, and is upwards of 7lbs ahead of his rivals on official ratings. Fellow seven-year-old Summerghand represents the David O’Meara stable and has shown improved form for the application of the visor, whilst the Charlie Hills-trained Royal Commando made a winning return in Listed company at Doncaster. The No Nay Never colt is lightly-raced, but wouldn’t want too much rain. Strictly on that running against Glen Shiel in the aforementioned Phoenix Stakes, Sonaiyla has to be greatly respected, on what his her first start in the colours of Moyglare Farm Stud. Purchased for 900,000 guineas, the daughter of Dark Angel goes well fresh and won first time out last season. Versatile in terms of ground, she finished only 10th at Ascot on her final start last term, but is 3lbs better off for that earlier neck defeat. Four of today’s field met in the Listed Sole Power Sprint Stakes at Naas just six days ago, with Urban Beat faring best in fourth. The Jessica Harrington-trained Indigo Breeze was sent off at the head of the market and was eased down once beaten. He had earlier started the season in fine form, winning a Tipperary handicap in impressive fashion on his second start. Twice a winner at this track as a two-year-old, the son of Invincible Spirit enjoyed a spell in Australia before returning to Moone, and it may be that he wants slightly better ground to show his best. Make A Challenge finished just in front of Indigo Breeze at Naas, and beat Urban Beat in the Abergwaun Stakes at Navan last summer. He had won a soft-ground Listed event over today’s course-and-distance just seven
50
days earlier, and if returning to that kind of form, would certainly enter calculations for Denis Hogan and Joe Doyle. The Ado McGuinness-trained Laugh A Minute had Make A Challenge back in third when causing a minor shock in a Listed event at Cork in early-April, where he came from off the pace to win by a couple of lengths. He couldn’t uphold that form when the pair clashed again at Naas, but that was over five furlongs and stepping back up in trip is sure to suit the Shamrock Thoroughbreds-owned six-year-old. He is another who wouldn’t want too much rain, however. Of the remainder, last year’s winner, and course specialist, Speak In Colours deserves a favourable mention. He broke well and travelled strongly 12 months ago, looking to have the race in safekeeping from some way out. He followed up in the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes at Fairyhouse, and although he hasn’t won since, it is likely that Joseph O’Brien has had a repeat bid in this race in mind since he returned from Meydan. He was held-up in the seven furlong Gladness Stakes last time (a race in which he finished runner-up last year) before running on, and that might well have put him spot on to defend his crown. Runner-up in this race in 2019, he is a four-time course-and-distance winner.

A rapid improver, Glen Shiel makes his seasonal reappearance after his fine win in the British Champions Sprint at Ascot’s Champions Day. This son of Pivotal started his racing career with famed French trainer Andre Fabre and has hit a rapid streak of improvement under the care of Archie Watson. Consistent on all-weather surfaces, Glen Shiel showed he handled the turf with a fine run at Deauville in July 2020 and went on to win the Group 3 Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint Stakes under Oisin Orr in August 2020. Sent to Haydock after his Curragh raid, Glen Shiel ran a fine race on his Group 1 bow under Hollie Doyle to be only beaten by the smart Dream Of Dreams. He signed off his season in fine style again under Doyle to win one of the top Group 1 sprints on British Champions Day. 52

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RACE THREE
Johannesburg (USA)
1992 RODRIGO DE TRIANO TRAINER: Peter Chapple-Hyam OWNER: Robert Sangster SIRE: El Gran Senor (USA) DAM: Hot Princess (GB) BREEDER: Swettenham Stud
Another product of the Sangster empire, the American-bred Rodrigo De Triano took the Classics by storm in 1992. A win in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket signed off an undefeated juvenile season for Rodrigo De Triano and he excelled as a three-year-old. A pipe opener at Newbury blew away the cobwebs for his win in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas and he stepped up further on that when doing the Newmarket-Curragh double under Lester Piggott. The 8-11 favourite in a six runner field, Rodrigo De Triano was held up at the back of the field and as the rest of them got to work Piggott sat and waited for the gap to appear. With Lucky Lindy and Irish Memory hard at work Rodrigo De Triano found the perfect gap between them and scooted through into the lead on the rail. He quickened smoothly and wasn’t hard pressed to win easily. He took some while to rediscover his form following defeats in the Derby and St James’ Palace Stakes but delivered in style to win the International Stakes at York. The winning continued in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket before his new Japanese owners decided the Breeders’ Cup Classic would be his next target. Partnered by Walter Swinburn in place of the injured Piggott, Rodrigo De Triano never figured on the surface and was subsequently retired. He was voted Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and took up stud duties in Japan.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS PREVIEW With five of the 12 runners in this afternoon’s Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas having locked horns at Newmarket three weeks ago, the English equivalent is the obvious place to start when attempting to unravel the puzzle. Poetic Flare came out on top for Jim Bolger, prevailing by a short-head from the fast finishing Master Of The Seas, so he clearly sets the standard. However, he took his chance in the French Guineas last weekend, so it is a big ask to expect him to back that up again just six days on. Should he manage to reproduce his early season form – and it is also worth remembering that he won the Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on reappearance in April – the Dawn Approach colt is the one to beat, and he won’t mind any forecast rain. He bids to emulate Churchill, who was the last colt to complete the Newmarket-Irish Guineas double, just four years ago. Beaten only narrowly into third at Newmarket, connections of Lucky Vega will be hopeful of reversing the form with the winner, given that he has had just the one start at three, and clearly handles this track well. Much busier as a two-year-old, Jessica Harrington’s Lope de Vega colt was an impressive winner of the Phoenix Stakes here last August (French Guineas winner St Mark’s Basilica was back in fifth that day) before suffering a troubled passage in the National Stakes. Seeing out the mile was a slight concern ahead of his reappearance, but he got the trip well, and provided conditions don’t deteriorate too much, he should put up a very bold show. Genuinely soft ground would have to be a concern, however, as it could just stretch his stamina to the maximum. On breeding, I would expect Lucky Vega to cope with testing ground – his sire, of course, won the Prix du Jockey Club on soft – and he looks to give his trainer a first win in the race. One trainer who knows what it takes to win the Guineas is Aidan O’Brien, who has saddled the winner on no fewer than 11 occasions since 1997, when Desert King struck. He won the race seven times in the space of 10 years between 2008 and 2017, but has been unsuccessful in the past three renewals. He saddles three this afternoon, all of whom have ground to make up with both Poetic Flare and Lucky Vega. 66
Van Gogh was the biggest price of the trio at Newmarket, yet finished in front of both Wembley and Battleground, who were reported to be unsuited by the undulations on the relatively quick ground. Interestingly - and something that should certainly be noted – the front three were all drawn low, so could have been favoured by their track position. All three O’Brien runners have form on an easy surface, so shouldn’t mind the ground worsening, and it would be folly (and, potentially, dangerous) to write off the prospect of a twelfth win in the race for team Ballydoyle. Wembley wasn’t given a hard time once his chance was over, and given that he was isolated on the nearside, it could be that Battleground is the one who takes the biggest step forward. La Barossa might not have contested the Guineas at Newmarket, but he had run well behind stable-mate and subsequent Guineas runner-up, Master Of The Seas, in the Craven. His two-year-old form was given a minor boost last weekend, when Derab won impressively, and he looks the pick of the English challenge. Of the remainder, Mac Swiney is likely to benefit more than most if the heavens really do open, with last year’s Futurity Stakes winner a strong stayer at the trip.

CURRAGH CONTENDERS
LUCKY VEGA TRAINER: Jessica Harrington OWNER: Zhang Yuesheng SIRE: Lope De Vega (IRE) DAM: Queen Of Carthage (USA) BREEDER: Kilcarn Stud
A smart juvenile, Lucky Vega showed he had trained on as a three-year-old when a close third in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas. A winner on Naas at debut, the smart son of Lope De Vega was a close second in the GAIN Railway Stakes on his second start before taking a further step forward and winning the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes on only his third start. He ended his juvenile career with a second in the Middle Park at Newmarket and showed an aptitude for that unique course when placing in the season’s first Classic back at the Rowley Mile last time out. This talented colt has a fine record at the Curragh too and would appreciate softer conditions as he goes in search of Classic glory at the Curragh this afternoon.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1) The Irish 2,000 Guineas was established in 1921 but it was not until not 1969 that Right Tack became the first horse to complete the English-Irish 2000 Guineas double. In all nine colts have won both races, the most recent being Churchillin 2017. There have been 29 English-trained winners of the race, with one from France (Spinning World) and one from America (Fourstars Allstar). The 1935 winner Museum remains the longest priced winner in the race’s history at 100/1 while there have been two 33/1 winners in Ballymore (1972) and Northern Treasure (1976). The James Tollertrained Bachelor Duke was a maiden when winning this race in 2004. Winners of this race often head next to Royal Ascot for the St James’ Palace Stakes, with the last horse to follow up there Gleneagles in 2015. Irish racing’s biggest names have won this feature contest, with the surname O’Brien responsible for many memorable victories. Both Vincent and Aidan have saddled historic winners of this race, with Tommy Burns and Martin Quirke tied for the winningmost rider from their victories in the early years of the race. Recent years have given wins to the likes of Kevin Prendergast and Ken Condon, with Siskin providing Ger Lyons and Colin Keane with breakthrough Classic success last year.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS
DISTANCE 1 MILE (1,609 METRES)
WHAT ARE GUINEAS? Guineas were a currency used from the 1600’s to the 1800’s. Used in Great Britain, Guineas were phased out with the introduction of the pound and was a niche currency with it’s use only common in legal fields and livestock auctions. A guinea is equivalent to £1.05. LEGENDARY HORSE

WHAT IS A CLASSIC?
ROCK OF GIRBRALTAR 2002 WINNER
The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-yearold generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse. The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger. The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

WHO ARE TATTERSALLS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest bloodstock auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From their base at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year and host the most prestigious bloodstock sales, notably the October Yearling Sale which sees millions spent on racing’s next best prospects.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien looks to have three solid chances with Wembley, Battleground and Van Gogh. None of which really fired in the 2000 Guineas but a much better performance from those three, particularly the first-named, is likely back on a more conventional track and with softer underfoot conditions. Poetic Flare won the aforementioned Newmarket event but has since had another tough race in France, and it would come as no surprise if Lucky Vega (third on the Rowley Mile) reversed form with him. However, a chance is taken on LA BARROSA, who has took giant strides forward from two to three judged on his cracking comeback effort behind Master Of The Seas, solid form which ties in nicely with all of the above.

2002 ROCK OF GIBRALTAR TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: Sue Magnier & Alex Ferguson SIRE: Danehill (USA) DAM: Offshore Boom (IRE) BREEDER: Joe Crowley & Mr & Mrs A P O’Brien
Aidan O’Brien’s fourth Irish 2,000 Guineas winner, Rock Of Gibraltar’s success on the track would have been that little sweeter for his trainer, given he bred the horse. A winner on debut at the Curragh, Rock Of Gibraltar had a stellar two-year-old career which included two Group 1 wins a Longchamp and Newmarket. His three-year-old season began with a bang in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas which he won under Johnny Murtagh, but Mick Kinane returned to the saddle for his win in the Irish equivalent on his next start. Held up behind his six rivals, Rock Of Gibraltar made smooth progress and went into a challenging position very easily under Kinane, before extending away in the final furlong to win cosily under a typically tender Kinane ride, sealing a 1-2-3 for Aidan O’Brien. His next race at Royal Ascot saw repeat tactics by Kinane and his running style made for tremendous viewing. Rock Of Gibraltar showed his versatility and class to win both a Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and then a Prix Moulin at Longchamp. His final career start came at Arlington in the Breeders’ Cup, where he went down by just under a length despite being badly hampered at a crucial stage of the race. Rock Of Gibraltar stands at Coolmore Stud and remains one of the most talented sons of Danehill.

Without question Johnny Murtagh’s stable star, Champers Elysees is a familiar horse to Curragh fans. On day two of Irish Champions Weekend 2019 she was a fine sixth in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale Stakes, and she followed that up with a win in an auction race two weeks later. She made her 2020 seasonal debut at the Curragh, landing a competitive three-year-old handicap over seven furlongs, which she back up with a win in Listed company at Galway. The wins kept coming, culminating in a win in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on day one of Irish Champions Weekend. She made her seasonal debut in the Athasi Stakes last time out but didn’t fire, and she comes to the race today seeking redemption.

THE LANWADES STUD STAKES This race was first run in 2004 when it held Group 2 status. From 2007 to 2014 it was run as a Group 3 before returning to Group 2 level in 2015. The race is registered as the Ridgewood Pearl Stakes, which remembers the brilliant John Oxx-trained filly whose stunning three-year-old season in 1995 took in victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes, the Prix du Moulin and the Breeders Cup Mile. English-trained horses have won 5 runnings to date while the only dual winner of the race is Dermot Weld’s Emulous, who was successful in 2011 and 2012. As well as being named after a fine filly, some classy horses have won this race, which falls perfectly in the calendar as a great starting point for top Irish-trained milers. Soviet Song won the race for James Fanshawe in 2004 under Johnny Murtagh, setting up a clash with Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, in which Soviet Song came out on top over the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner. Aidan O’Brien’s brilliant filly Airwave won in 2005 under Kieren Fallon, and her legacy lives on through her second career as a broodmare. She foaled Meow, a Storm Cat filly who would go on to foal Churchill, 2000 Guineas’ double winner who now stands as a promising sire for the Coolmore operation. Airwave was Aidan O’Brien’s last winner of the race until Magic Wand won the 2020 renewal.
86
Herself a horse with a fine pedigree, Magic Wand had been a model of consistency in her racing career. Placed seven times in Group 1 races, she finally added the illustrious Mackinnon Stakes to her page when winning at Flemington in November 2019, and her international reputation was further enhanced with her start in the Saudi Cup making Riyadh the 15th track she had raced at in eight different countries. The 2020 renewal of this race was a penalty kick for her as easily the least competitive race she had contested in a while. Nevertheless, she still brought her consistent best to the table and ran out an easy four and a half length winner under Seamie Heffernan. She was never hard pressed and made easy headway to take the lead two furlongs out, extending away in Group 1 style to add another pattern race to her pedigree. See Magic Wand’s easy win in the race by watching the video below.

CURRAGH COMMENT Soul Search got the better of CHAMPERS ELYSEES when they met on seasonal reappearance, however it would be a great surprise if that form isn’t reversed over a mile and the Johnny Murtagh-trained Group 1 winner gets the vote to return to winning ways. Last year, the daughter of Elzaam knew no limitations and recorded four consecutive victories before getting somewhat unlucky in the Sun Chariot Stakes and, should we see a similar level of form today, could prove too classy for her opposition. Valerina Messalina is unexposed at this trip but the testing conditions prove somewhat of a question mark, while Roca Roma appears to be Ger Lyons’ first string and will aim to build on an encouraging reappearance last week.

CURRAGH COMMENT A fiercely competitive sprint handicap, but ZEPHRON impressively won a similar course-and-distance event earlier this month and an 11lb hike in the ratings might not be enough to anchor him if arriving in the same mood. Fastar has been touched off on both outings so far this year and he is likely to be in the shake-up again, while Blairmayne also warrants respect having finished just in front of the latter two weeks ago. Midnight Fire, Silver Service and Zig Zag Zyggy are other names to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT MONTEGO BAY, who hit the crossbar over track and trip on her penultimate start, opened her account when taking a fillies’ maiden at Naas earlier this month and the daughter of No Nay Never could have plenty more to come now. Elanora ran with credit when picking up a silver medal on that occasion and is interesting on her handicap debut, while the twice-raced Ones Are Wild looks a smart prospect to keep an eye on. Liffey River, Saatty and Valhalla’s Dream are all considered on their first handicap outings, with Beagnach Sasta also noted following a near-miss at Leopardstown last week.
