The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Darren Bunyan Darren Bunyan grew up around horses as his father Arthur was a racehorse trainer, he also rode as an amateur and later as a professional jockey. He has amassed plenty of experience in training racehorses both nationally and internationally working for the likes of Dermot Weld, John Oxx, Jonjo O’Neill and even worked in Japan. He set up training on The Curragh in 2011 and originally started with two horses and now has built up his string to where he has about thirty horses a year. Darren has trained winners in Ireland, the UK and UAE and globetrotter Hit The Bid has been a stalwart for his yard. Bought for €40,000 as a yearling by the Curragh trainer, he has won almost €400,000 in prizemoney. 13

THE STORY OF MORNY WING by Sally Duckett, International Thoroughbred THE jockey Morny Wing dominated Irish Flat racing from 1917 to 1949, and created records that still stand nearly 100 years later. He won the Irish 1,000 Guineas a record seven times, including the very first two runnings of the fillies’ Classic in 1922 and 1923 aboard Lady Violette and Glenshesk. He holds the record for Irish Classic successes on 23. Wing was not Irish by birth, but he was destined to become a jockey. Born in Doncaster in 1896, Mornington Albert Wing was the son of Walter Wing, a stable lad who became a jockey and a Post Office mail coach driver. Wing Snr named his son after his own racing hero, the then British champion jockey Herbert Mornington Cannon (also known as Morny), who was a champion Flat jockey six times in the 1890s. As was custom Wing Jnr started his racing apprenticeship early – he went to work in Newmarket as a teenager, and he rode his first winner as a 15-year-old in 1911. His first big win came in 1913 in the Autumn Cup, a competitive end-of-season handicap run at Liverpool, and he then won the following spring’s Queen’s Prize run at Kempton Park in 1914. It is a race that is still run today. Wing went on to finish third in that season’s British jockeys’ championship. His domestic riding career had to be put on hold with the outbreak of World War I, but racing continued in India and the adventuring Wing travelled overseas. His best day in India came when he steered home five winners on the same card at Calcutta races in March 1916. After his spell in India, Wing arrived in Ireland in 1917. It has been suggested that the young jockey headed to Ireland to avoid conscription, which had been introduced in Britain in 1916 but was never applied to Ireland. In fact, a UK trainer sent over two horses to run at The Curragh and Morny travelled over to ride. They both won, and Wing maintained the winning form – his first five rides in Ireland turned out to be winners. He enjoyed further riding journeys over the Irish Sea and in 1921 he decided to make Ireland his home. He went on to dominate Irish racing for three decades winning the champion jockeys’ title on nine occasions, the Flat racing championship 13 times and establishing a record number of Irish Classic victories. Most Irish jockeys of the day rode both on the Flat and over jumps, but Wing concentrated on the Flat and he reportedly he was regarded as virtually unbeatable over short distances, particularly effective on two-year-olds. His success was recorded to be due primarily to his exceptional strength, his ability to get away quickly at the start, and the speed with which he could pull his whip through. His reputation for timing and putting a horse in front on the line produced a career that yielded more than 2,000 winners and gave rise to the adage “never leave Wing out in a sprint!” In Ireland he rode a five-timer on three occasions at The Curragh, but though he could never manage the elusive six, on one occasion he rode eight consecutive winners over two days. His first Classic win came in the Irish St Leger in 1920, the following year he won the Irish Derby, one of his six wins, and then in 1922 he collected that first-ever Irish 1,000 Guineas. His seventh and last success in the fillies’ race came in 1947 some 25 years after that first victory.

16

He also won the 2,000 Guineas twice, the Irish Oaks once and the Irish St Leger seven times giving him a total of 23 Classic victories. A punter’s dream, his alliance in the 1940s with the big-time owner Joe McGrath with trainer Michael Collins was a “bookmaker’s headache”. Wing’s retainer was reputedly highest paid to a jockey in Ireland up to that time. He was a dedicated sportsman, and reportedly had an “integrity that marked him out in an era of flamboyant rivals and frequently less-than-honest dealings”. In 1949 he retired to train at his Kildare home, and in 1951 he won the Irish St Leger with Do Well. He died in May 1965 and the Morny Wing Memorial Hurdle was run annually at The Curragh for many years in his memory. Wing rode before, during and after both World Wars, and kicked home 2,000 winners through a 38-year career. To have had such a long stint riding, and to have been so successful in an era interrupted by world conflict, before the widespread use of the car and phones, is a considerable achievement. If recalling the names of talented riders who have dominated the sport in the last 70 years, for Morny Wing to still be the winning-most Irish 1,000 Guineas jockey is a testament to his abilities, horsemanship and professionalism.

A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION BY CHAD YEOMANS

1

There are some well bred horses in this race, but like plenty of maiden races, it largely comes down to who is the most streetwise and who will handle the conditions best. Aidan O’Brien has used this race for many of his good horses in the past and he saddles an unraced daughter of Zoffany called Heart To Heart. She’s very well related and looks one to keep on side of early in her career.

2

I’ve long been a fan of Taipan who was one of the most impressive maiden winners from the whole of last season. He’s just starting to get it all together this season and in two runs, has seen the backside of the current Derby favourite Bolshoi Ballet, but has shaped well on both starts. There is nothing of that calibre in this race and he should be very tough to beat under Shane Foley.

3

It looks as though the master trainer Aidan O’Brien holds all of the aces in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but I’m going against his short-pried favourite Broome with his 2020 Derby winner Serpentine. Serpentine has done little wrong in his career, who is a course and distance winner and did run very well on soft ground at Ascot last October. He looks like he could even progress into a Cup horse this season, but this could be a good starting point for him.

4

The feature race on the Irish 1000 Guineas. The first three in the market have dominated the betting in this race and although the two Irish horses Pretty Gorgeous and Joan Of Arc have outstanding claims, my preference is for the Richard Fahey trained runner Fev Rover. After watching the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket back, I was impressed with her performance and think a front-running performance of similar quality will be enough to see her claim the crown here. She handles soft ground, and ticks plenty of the trend’s boxes, too. At a bigger price, I expect Fantasy Lady to run well for Paddy Twomey.

5

Despite finishing down the field, there was a lot to like about Lobo Roho’s comeback run at the Curragh earlier this season. He started to pick up as the race had already been lost and was only beaten less than five lengths as he crossed the line. He’ll strip fitter for that run and won’t mind the conditions underfoot too. Trainer Jessie Harrington does very well at this meeting, and this may have been an early season target.

6

Trainer Ado McGuinness won this race last year and has a viable chance to win back-to-back renewals, this time with his six year old gelding, Sirjack Thomas. On his first start this season, he was a good third behind Raise You in a decent contest and then also ran well albeit getting slightly outpaced over a short trip - at Cork last time out. He’ll appreciate going back up to a mile, he likes soft ground and his young rider takes off an additional 7lb.

7

Parish Delight was clearly relatively unfancied on his debut as he went off 22/1 for a similar contest, however, he did catch the eye, as he ran on very well. He showed signs of greenness early on, but he started to get the hang of the game late on and he stayed on well to finish fourth. With that run under his belt, I expect him to go very close here. The unraced Father’s Day is beautifully bred and could be anything.

8

The final race of the weekend is handicap over 2m and there are plenty of National Hunt trainers with runners, which is common in this sphere. It’s hard to think that Coltor won’t run a huge race on the back of his good effort in the Boodles Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He’s got a very nice mark of 84 (127 rated over hurdles) on the flat and has won on testing conditions before. His trainer Dermot Weld is one of the shrewdest trainers in the ranks, and he may have found his four year old gelding a nice winning opportunity.

THE PAT SMULLEN JOCKEYS’ ROOM The Board of the Curragh Racecourse are delighted to introduce the Pat Smullen Jockeys’ Room this weekend. Pat was a true legend, and his achievements speak for themselves. He was Champion Jockey on no fewer than 9 occasions and rode almost 2,000 winners worldwide. He was stable jockey to Dermot Weld for 20 years and the Curragh was his second home. Even after all his success at The Curragh as a jockey, it was out of the saddle that he had perhaps his finest day here when he was the driving force behind the Pat Smullen Champion’s Race on Irish Champions’ Weekend 2019. That is a day that will never be forgotten by those lucky enough to be there. It is very important that there should be a lasting memory of Pat in the Curragh so that we, and future generations can be reminded of his wonderful achievements. The Pat Smullen Jockeys’ Room tribute was designed by Frances and the family with inputs from many of Pat’s friends and colleagues. It is fitting that the first day we will see it will be 22nd May, which is Pat’s birthday. There will be a formal opening of the Room when we welcome back attendees later in the summer.

RACE ONE

CURRAGH COMMENT HEART TO HEART makes plenty of appeal being a half-sister to last year’s Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde and the daughter of Zoffany boasts strong credentials on her racecourse debut for leading connections. She’s Trouble ran on to finish third at Navan when making her debut last week and the extra yardage promises to suit Jim Bolger’s filly, while others worthy of consideration are Agartha and Eternal Gold.

A tough juvenile who ran five times, this daughter of Lawman hs strong two-year-old form. A winner at Bellestown on debut, she shared strong form with the talented Shale, with the two trading places in races at Leopardstown and the Curragh, culminating in Pretty Gorgeous winning the Debutante Stakes before the form was reversed in the Moyglare. Her best performance as a juvenile came at Newmarket in the Fillies’ Mile, where she overcame significant traffic trouble to run out a smooth winner over Indigo Girl in second, with recent Newmarket 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth back in third. A horse who should be bang there in all the top races this season, Pretty Gorgeous looks to become the second Irish Classic winner for Joseph O’Brien after the Irish Derby win of Latrobe in 2018.

THE HEIDER FAMILY STABLES GALLINULE STAKES This race is named after the Irish-based sire Gallinule who became the first English champion sire to spend his entire stud career in Ireland. His progeny included the ‘mare of the century’ Pretty Polly and six Irish Derby winners in seven years. The Gallinule was restricted to three-year-olds from its first running in 1947 until 1992. From 1994 until 2004 older horses were eligible to compete in the race but since then it has been restricted to the classic generation. After being run as a Group 2 for a period, the Gallinule has held Group 3 status since 1998 and it has been held at the Curragh every year apart from the 2001 and 2002 runnings which were staged at Leopardstown. Latrobe, who finished second to Platinum Warrior in the 2018 race, became the first Irish Derby winner to contest the Gallinule since Assert all the way back in 1982. The subsequent Cox Plate winner Adelaide, the now Australian-based Group 1 winner Homesman, the English St Leger hero Leading Light are notable recent winners of the race while Brief Truce won the Gallinule before landing the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The O’Brien name has been responsible for a number of victories in this race. Vincent trained superstar Alleged to victory in 1977, one of many victories for Lester Piggott who followed up the following year onboard Inkerman, again for Vincent O’Brien. Aidan has trained 16 winners of this race, starting with Johan Cruyff in 1997 and most recently with Constantinople in 2019. O’Brien trained six consecutive winners from 2006 to 2011, with Johnny Murtagh riding three to victory, and in recent years only Dermot Weld, David Wachman and Mick Halford have stopped the O’Brien juggernaut. Joseph trained last year’s winner, Crossfirehurricane.

32

Shane Crosse had a great season in 2020 and Crossfirehurricane kicked off a series of wins on racing’s biggest stages. In the maroon and yellow chevrons of the Heider family, Crosse faced five rivals. As a son of Kitten’s Joy, Crossfirehurricane relished the fast conditions and was a breakthrough winner for the Heider family. Given a break after winning at Dundalk in the Patton Stakes, Crossfirehurricane was unbeaten in his career, having won at Limerick on debut and secured back to back wins at Dundalk. Held up in rear, Crossfirehurricane charted wide in the closing stages under Crosse and travelled smoothly into contention, challenging the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Mythical two furlongs from home. Ridden down the middle of the track, the winner stayed on well and recorded a comfortable victory over Gold Maze back in second. Refresh your memory of the race with the replay below.

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate their growing association with horse racing in Ireland. Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for five years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from the States to Ireland. “It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years including Crossfirehurricane, A New Dawn, Take A Deep Breath and our latest winner, an American Pharoah filly named Pista. Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.” The Heider’s success has been marked with victories on some of racing’s biggest days. Their flagship horse, Crossfirehurricane, won on debut at Limerick and followed that up with three successive victories, notably in the Listed Patton Stakes at Dundalk and then the Gallinule Stakes, which they sponsor today. The talented Pista has also showcased her talent, progressing rapidly under the care of Joseph O’Brien to take the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown before following

up in the Group 2 Park Hill at Doncaster. Her fine three-year-old season ended with a close second behind the smart filly Wonderful Tonight in the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp. “I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 25 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terrific times and been blessed with a number of high caliber horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”. But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with it’s incredible history. I’ve enjoyed reading everything I can get my hands on the last few years starting with several biographies about the iconic Vincent O’Brien. I have to admit I’ve developed an appreciation I thought I’d never have Cindy and Scott Heider with racing consultant Tony Lacy (on left) for horse’s over the jumps! It’s safe to say, we’re here to stay racing in Ireland.” The Heider’s affiliation with the Curragh can be found through their welcome sponsorship of the Round Tower Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes, two significant races in the Irish racing calendar.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has won this seven times since 2010 and his trio of Matchless, Arturo Toscanini and Hector De Maris are foolish to rule out, while recent winners Max Mayhem and Snapraeterea look the pick of Joseph O’Brien’s squad. There was a lot to like about Earlswood’s first attempt at this trip in the Dee Stakes, with Erzindjan also noted trying this distance for the first time. However, the answer to this competitive event could lie with the experience of FLYING VISIT, who was second to the highly-regarded Bolshoi Ballet in the Ballysax Stakes on his penultimate start and can leave his disappointing run in the Dante in the past. Taipan was a nose behind the selection in third in that Leopardstown contest and can also be thereabouts.

Broome seemed to have the world at his hooves when winning the Ballysax and the Derby Trial at Leopardstown in spring of 2019 and was only beaten half a length in a blanket finish at Epsom. Things didn’t go to plan in 2020, as he suffered with a setback and couldn’t find his form in two runs at Newmarket and Ascot. However, he has been rejuvenated by the return to Ireland and has notched up three impressive wins. An easy win in the Listed Devoy stakes at Naas was followed with back to back wins at the Curragh, firstly in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes and recently in the Group 2 Mooresbridge. Aidan O’Brien charted a similar path with Magical and other types, with the spring target always the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

SAOIRE

2005 TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS WINNER

46

Few stories of Irish Guineas winners are as good as Saoire. The Welsh-bred daughter of Pivotal was purchased for just 4,000 guineas sent into training with Frances Crowley, wife of Pat Smullen. She won her maiden at the second time of asking and progressed into a fine three-year-old, finishing sixth in the Newmarket 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish version. Ridden by Mick Kinane, Saoire was always towards the head of the field and made her challenge early. She was closely pressed by Penkenna Princess under Seb Sanders but held on in the dying strides to win for Crowley, making her the first woman to officially train the winner of an Irish Classic.

47

THE TATTERSALLS GOLD CUP The Tattersalls Gold Cup was granted Group 1 status in 1999 and since then it has become established as one of the most significant contents for older horses in the opening months of the European racing season. One of the most memorable winners in those early years as a Group 1 was undoubtedly the great Montjeu. Trained by John Hammond in France, the son of Sadler’s Wells arrived at The Curragh for the 2000 renewal of the race having already won the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the previous season. Sent off at 1/3, he didn’t disappoint under Mick Kinane, showing a fine turn of foot to escape a pocket in the closing stages and run out the comfortable winner. 2005 produced a sensational renewal of the race that saw the five-time Group 1 winner Bago come over from France to race against the pick of the Irish colts in the shape of the Dermot Weld-trained Grey Swallow and the John Oxx-trained Azamour. In what was an enthralling contest, it was the previous season’s Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow that succeeded in holding off the brave bid of Bago in a tremendous finish. Andre Fabre saddled his only winner of this race in 2006, when Hurricane Run landed the spoils in the hands of Kieren Fallon. The four-year-old had won the Irish Derby here during his Classic campaign and finished that season with victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Fallon was also in the saddle for this victory as he made all on the colt, stretching clear of the smart filly Alexander Goldrun to win by seven lengths at the finish. Since it’s elevation to Group 1 status, only two horses have succeeded in winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup on two separate occasions. The first was the Aidan O’Brien trained So You Think. The son of High Chaparral arrived to Ireland with a huge reputation having won five Group 1s in Australia for Bart Cummings and he consolidated his position as an international star by winning the 2011 and 2012 renewals of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in great style.

48

The second two-time winner of the race was the Roger Charlton-trained Al Kazeem. The son of Dubawi got the better of Camelot to win the 2013 renewal and he came back to the Curragh two years later to beat Fascinating Rock, Postponed and The Grey Gatsby in an epic renewal of the race. This performance was even more remarkable as he had been retired to stud following his five-year-old campaign and to get the horse right back to his best was some achievement for trainer Roger Charlton. The Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup was included in the top fifteen highest rated races in the world last year following the victory of Magical for the second successive year. Magical charted a unique route to the race last year, as due to rescheduling she was able to take in the Pretty Polly Stakes on her first start of the season before heading to this race. Ridden by Wayne Lordan, Magical made all the running and ran out a comfortable winner, beating stablemate Sir Dragonet into second with Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song back in third. Successive wins at the Curragh launced Magical’s season, after which she went on to win the Irish Champion Stakes and be placed in Group 1’s at Ascot, Keeneland and Sha Tin. Take a look back on the 2020 renewal with the video below.

CURRAGH COMMENT BROOME has looked impressive in three starts so far this season, winning all of them, and could continue on the upwards curve over a C&D that suits him well. The son of Australia has form on soft ground and could justify likely favouritism. Tiger Moth returns to action after finishing second in the Melbourne Cup and could run with credit for a long way now dropping in distance, while Riyadh scorer True Self is interesting on her comeback run.

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. NO SPEAK ALEXANDER TRAINER: Jessica Harrington OWNER: Charles, Noel & Paul Callaghan SIRE: Shalaa (IRE) DAM: Rapacity Alexander (IRE) BREEDER: Mountarmstrong Stud

No Speak Alexander enhanced her credentials for this race when winning the Athasi Stakes on her seasonal debut, beating some older mares in the process. She led home a 1-2 for trainer Jessica Harrington with Zaffy’s Pride back in second, and the manner of her win over the seven furlongs puts her right in the frame for this fillies Classic. A winner on her second start at Roscommon, she showed progress from her juvenile campaign and was a fine winner under Shane Foley, who kept his mount always prominent on the front end and used her confirmed stamina over the trip to commit for home early. She took the lead a furlong from the finish and had to be kept up to her work under Foley, but she responded well to her rider’s urgings and kept on strongly to run away again at the finish and win by a length and a half.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS PREVIEW A high-class juvenile last season, Pretty Gorgeous makes her belated seasonal reappearance in this afternoon’s Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas. Her three victories last year included a course success in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over seven furlongs and her campaign culminated with a half-length win in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Forced to miss the English equivalent (due to an unsatisfactory scope), her form was well advertised as Mother Earth, third in the Fillies’ Mile, was victorious, and she has since finished runner-up in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp. That Fillies’ Mile form was also franked by fourth home Dubai Fountain, who ran out a ready winner of the Cheshire Oaks, and by Snowfall (7th) who won the Musidora at York. Joseph O’Brien has had three weeks to get his Lawman filly back to her best, and it is worth remembering that her two standout performances as a two-year-old came on soft ground, so she will not be inconvenienced should the weather forecast be correct. Based on last year’s form, she is very much the one to beat. The twice that Pretty Gorgeous did lose last season came at the hands of Shale, but with Donnacha O’Brien’s Galileo filly not being declared, Messrs Smith, Magnier and Tabor will be relying on Joan Of Arc. Following her sixth in the 1,000 Guineas Trial (one place behind Shale) she made all to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial in comfortable fashion. Another daughter of Galileo, that was her first try at a mile, and being a full-sister to dual 2,000 Guineas winner Gleneagles (completed the Newmarket-Irish double in 2015) and Irish 1,000 winner Marvellous, she certainly has the pedigree for this race. She appeared to relish the extra furlong last time and had won a maiden at this track on reappearance, so has course form in the book, too. Having run just once as a juvenile, she was certainly entitled to be open to a lot more improvement than most this season. Aidan O’Brien – trainer of Joan Of Arc – is bidding for a tenth win in the race, and a fourth in the past five years. O’Brien also runs Empress Josephine and Friendly, whilst Pretty Gorgeous is joined by stable-mates Sense Of Style and Thinking Of You, so six of the 14-strong field are trained by either Aidan or son, Joseph.

62

Form of the Newmarket 1000 Guineas is represented by English-raider Fev Rover, who hails from the North Yorkshire stable of Richard Fahey. Like Pretty Gorgeous, she has a two-year-old defeat of Dubai Fountain to her name (Listed event at Sandown) and confirmed her versatility in terms of ground when winning a Group 2 at Deauville. Ridden positively throughout at Newmarket, she travelled enthusiastically in first-time cheekpieces and finished strongly having briefly looked like she might be swallowed up. Easier ground and a flatter track should help, and that is the single best piece of three-year-old form on offer. Of the remainder, Miss Amulet is another who has yet to run this season, but boasts smart form from her two-year-old season, notably when winning the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York. On a strict line through runner-up Sacred, she has a bit to find with Pretty Gorgeous and testing ground might stretch her stamina beyond breaking point.

63

CURRAGH CONTENDERS

MISS AMULET TRAINER: Ken Condon OWNER: DMrs Doreen Tabor SIRE: Sir Prancealot (IRE) DAM: Shena’s Dream (IRE) BREEDER: Ringfort Stud

A talented juvenile, Miss Amulet makes her seasonal reappearance in preparation for what could be a fine three-year-old campaign. A winner at Cork on her third start, the daughter of Sir Prancealot progressed to win a Listed race at Naas before heading over to York for the Lowther Stakes. Ridden perfectly by James Doyle, Miss Amulet did well to beat the classy Sacred and a host of good fillies in what was a good renewal of the Group 2. Purchased by Doreen Tabor, Miss Amulet was then sent to Newmarket for the Cheveley Park Stakes, where she finished a fine second under Ryan Moore, having been sent off favourite. She continued her travels with a trip to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup, where she ran well to be third behind subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth. 64

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1) This race was inaugurated a year after the Irish 2000 Guineas and the first running in 1922 was won by Lady Violette and she was ridden by Morny Wing who remains the most successful jockes in the race’s history with seven victories. Wing’s last success came a quarter of a century after his first as he teamed up with Hubert Hartigan to take the 1947 running with Sea Symphony. Only four fillies have completed the English-Irish 1,000 Guineas double. The first to do so was Attraction in 2004 and she was followed by Finsceal Beo (2007), Winter (2017) and Hermosa (2019). Finsceal Beo came within a head of completing the near inconceivable treble of the English-French-Irish Guineas hat-trick. The 20/1 success of Classic Park in 1997 is particularly noteworthy as it was the first classic success for Aidan O’Brien. There have been 28 English-trained winners of the race while the last of the four French trained successes came when Olivier Douieb’s L’Attrayante justified 4/1 favouritism in 1983. In recent years, Irish racing’s biggest names have tasted success in this race, with Aidan O’Brien winning in 2014, 2019 and 2020, Jessica Harrington winning in 2018 with Alpha Centauri and Jim Bolger landing the spoils in 2015 with Pleascach.

WHAT ARE GUINEAS? Guineas were a currency used from the 1600’s to the 1800’s. Used in Great Britain, Guineas were phased out with the introduction of the pound and was a niche currency with it’s use only common in legal fields and livestock auctions. A guinea is equivalent to £1.05. LEGENDARY HORSE

Mick Channon continued his love affair with the Curragh by saddling the 2012 winner Samitar, while further back Luca Cumani sent out 2002 winner Gossamer under a younger Jamie Spencer. The likes of Sir Michael Stoute, David Elsworth, Ian Balding, Barry Hills and John Dunlop all saddled winners of this race in the 80’s and 90’s, with Henry Cecil winning the 1973 renewal with Cloonagh under rider Greville Starkey.

WHAT IS A CLASSIC? The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-yearold generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse. The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger. The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

WHO ARE TATTERSALLS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest bloodstock auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From their base at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year and host the most prestigious bloodstock sales, notably the October Yearling Sale which sees millions spent on racing’s next best prospects.

CURRAGH COMMENT Pretty Gorgeous enjoyed a cracking juvenile campaign, signing off with victory in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket, and she must enter calculations on her reappearance, but preference is for a race-fit FEV ROVER. Richard Fahey’s charge arrives following a cracking third-placed effort in the English 1000 Guineas and today’s much softer conditions are unlikely to bother her, as she won on very soft ground at Deauville last year. Joan Of Arc looks to be on the improve, judged on her recent impressive victory at Leopardstown, and she should also handle the ground.

CURRAGH COMMENT DANCING APPROACH might have claimed a second successive win but for traffic problems at Leopardstown nine days ago, but the Camelot filly should appreciate this drop in distance and could continue on the upwards curve now under 5lb claimer Mikey Sheehy. Baby Zeus warrants a betting check on stable debut for Willie Mullins, while Alghazaal likes soft ground and did plenty to catch the eye when second at Dundalk on reappearance in March.

CURRAGH COMMENT Layfayette is a likeable, consistent gelding and produced a career-best performance when scoring on his seasonal reappearance over course and distance in March. He’s 6lb higher today but should remain competitive, while Joseph O’Brien looks to have a strong hand with Fame And Acclaim and Rocket Science. However, from further down the weights, it could pay to side with FIL THE POWER. He was staying on all the way to the line when a head second over 7f at Cork last time and should appreciate stepping back up in trip. With Colin Keane an eye-catching jockey booking, he is fancied to go close.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Joseph O’Brien won this with his St Leger winner Galileo Chrome in 2020 and could saddle the victor once again with his Killarney runner-up DRACONID holding leading claims. A running-on sixth over 7f on debut here before that, the Fastnet Rock colt could thrive for the move up in distance. Father’s Day looks the pick of the newcomers on show and the Galileo colt has to be given the utmost respect, while Parish Delight was an encouraging fourth on debut and looks the pick of Jim Bolger’s duo.
