School essay competition winners in parade ring
THECURRAGH EDUCATIONDAY
The Curragh Racecourse was delighted to welcome school children to the racecourse this week to take part in a special education day in association with HRI Racing Juniors
Schools represented were Scoil Mhuire, St Patrick’s National School, Newbridge Educate Together National School, Scoil Na Naomh Uilig and Gaelscoil Chill Dara, all in Newbridge along with Allen National School, St Catherine of Siena on the Curragh and Scoil Bhríde, Athgarvan.
Over 500 school children got to go behind the scenes to meet racehorse trainer Richard Brabazon and his retired racehorse Korbous.
Master Farrier Donal Bennett was joined by students from the Farriery School in Kildare to give the children a shoeing demonstration, explaining the role of the farrier and the special skills and equipment required to treat racehorses’ hooves.
Riding Coach Niall Byrne from the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE), gave the children an opportunity to ride the racehorse simulator.
Members of the Curragh racecourse team brought the children on a tour of the racecourse and explained how the team prepare the track for a race meeting and all the equipment required to maintain the racing surface.
Children were invited to write a story about their Curragh experience and we are delighted to welcome the finalists as follows who will receive prizes courtesy of the racecourse

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

He was turned over at a short price at Tipperary but the front two pulled well clear and he can step forward now to open his account. The Weld Park Stakes has been generously sponsored by Dermot Weld since 1983. The race is run in memory of his parents, Charlie and Marguerite. Initially run at the Phoenix Park, it was transferred to the Curragh in 1991.
The race has a rich history of being won by future Classic and Group One winners and producers. Previous winners include; Ballet De France, Trusted Partner, Isle Of Glass, Ridgewood Pearl, Last Second, Token Gesture, Alborada, Imagine, Chintz, Qualify and Hermosa.
In 2016, the race was won by Eziyra whose daughter, Ezeliya, triumphed in the Epsom Oaks in 2024.

HEAVENS GATE should appreciate going another furlong here and can gain her black-type success. When she landed the valuable Ballyhane Stakes at Naas, it was interesting to hear Aidan O’Brien say that she wanted to go seven furlongs. She performed with credit when fourth in the Lowther Stakes at York last month and looks capable of landing this. Barnavara sets the standard off a mark of 104 and is the obvious danger She has been third behind Bedtime Story on her last couple of outings and is entitled to be a big player English raider Alla Stella could be suited by dropping back a furlong and is place material.

The rain looks like it will come in time for SPYCATCHER. Karl Burke’s charge failed to make much impression in the Haydock Sprint Cup last time on good ground. He had taken a Deauville Group 3 contest in testing conditions previously and should be a big player back at this level. HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

Stamina was always his strong suit and this turned into a real war of attrition in testing conditions. Galway Hurdle winner NURBURGRING can land another valuable handicap for trainer Joseph O’Brien. The four-year-old, who went up to a mark of 150 after winning that summer feature, looks nicely treated back on the level. Having caught the eye staying on late over a shorter trip at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend, he should be primed for this assignment. The Gavin Cromwell-trained Sixandahalf is well handicapped under a 7lb penalty following her win at Newmarket last month. A former bumper winner, the filly should appreciate stepping up beyond two miles for the first time on the Flat. CURRAGH COMMENT
Although somewhat disappointing at Dundalk last time, BARD OF AVON is worth another chance on the basis of his reappearance fourth over C&D on his previous start. The winner of that latter race easily landed a premier handicap on Irish Champions Weekend, while the runner-up won her maiden next time On the assumption that he is better suited to turf, the Joseph O’Brien-trained colt gets the vote Navan runner-up Dahab, who boasts an identical official rating to the selection, has to be respected. The Denis Hogan-trained gelding was well supported when finding just one too strong on that occasion. Newcomer John Steinbeck also has to be considered in a contest where the majority of those to have previously raced appear vulnerable
