I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the third meeting of the 2025 flat racing season at the Curragh. We are delighted to be back racing and are looking forward to a great season.

Last year we had 70 different winning trainers at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing.

This year we will race 24 times between March and November with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 29th. We have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed and Group 3 races and our better class handicaps. We are grateful for the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our race sponsors who are critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.

Today’s race sponsors are the Irish European Breeders Fund, Tote Ireland, Racecourse Media Group, Sports Information Services and Lodge Park Stud who sponsor our feature race the Park Express Stakes. Your support is greatly appreciated, and I hope you have a great day.

I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We have made some changes to our offering for owners this year with the Tattersalls Owners Club located on Level 2 of the racecourse. We hope you will relax and enjoy your day here and thank you for running your horse at the Curragh. We are always interested in hearing customer feedback.

Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.

We race here again at the Curragh in three weeks’ time on Monday May 5th for the Newbridge Parishes Community Race Day when our feature races will be the Coolmore Stud City of Troy Mooresbridge, Coolmore Stud Henry Longfellow Tetrarch and Coolmore Stud Auguste Rodin Athasi Stakes

We look forward to welcoming you back here that day and regularly during the 2025 flat season.

Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Slight preference is for Joseph O’Brien’s filly GREEN SENSE, with the stable having landed this contest last year A daughter of freshman sire Starman, she shouldn’t lack for pace on debut and that may be enough to see off Extravagant, who is a half-brother to Arc de Triomphe second Cloth Of Stars. CURRAGH COMMENT

Having scoped dirty after finishing last in the Listed Bosra Sham at Newmarket in November last season, it could be worth chancing COLD HEARTED in these calmer waters. The daughter of Blue Point had previously finished a close-up second at Naas and a reproduction of that performance may prove sufficient. Spodo Komodo offered plenty to work with on his opening fourth at Dundalk 22 days ago and improvement is forecast, especially dropping in trip, while No Return and newcomer No Alibi are also noted.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

BETSEN found only a progressive sort too good when runner-up over course and distance a fortnight ago This is less competitive and the unexposed son of Invincible Spirit looks to have plenty more to offer off his current mark. A 6f winner at Kempton, Gutsy Girl made a promising debut for Joseph O’Brien’s yard when fourth in a Listed sprint at Cork. She makes more appeal than last week’s Bellewstown winner Emerald Harmony, who is upped in class.

CURRAGH COMMENT

There is plenty of depth to this race and several should make headlines this year WHIRL is suggested as the most appealing option at this stage as she lays here Guineas and Oaks credentials on the line A Group 3 winner here on her final start as a juvenile, the daughter of Wootton Bassett certainly seems to be heading in the right direction. One Look, Azada and Bright Thunder are others to bear in mind.

NEO SMART was far from disgraced when fourth over a mile at Leopardstown last month and was kindly dropped 1lb The four-year-old’s sole victory came over this distance and she could return to winning ways. Touch The Sound made a pleasing handicap debut when a respectable fourth at Dundalk in December and is an interesting contender back on turf Imperial Dream is the pick of the remainder WIN: NEO SMART DANGER: Touch The Sound

THANK YOU

The Curragh would like to thank Moyglare Stud for their support of the Stable Staff Canteen for their 2025 racing season.

The staff and management of the Curragh were saddened to learn of the passing last week of David (Davy) Glennon. A popular figure around the Curragh, Davy worked for over twenty years with the Dermot Weld stable and regularly graced the winner’s enclosure here at the Curragh, most notably when Tahiyra won the Moyglare Stakes and the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas in 2022 and 2023 respectively. We extend our deepest sympathies to Davy’s family, wide circle of friends and his work colleagues in Rosewell House

CURRAGH COMMENT

GAZELLE D’OR won a competitive nursery at Navan at the end of last season. There looks to be plenty more to come from the daughter of Equiano as a three-year-old and she can defy a 3lb rise on her return to action. Sakakawea ran well for a long way at Naas last month and she’s entitled to be sharper. She can feature in the finish, while La La Lucrative will appreciate this return to sprinting having won over 6f last year

WIN: GAZELLE D’OR

RACE SPONSOR

DANGER: Sakakawea

A representative of The Tote will present a trophy to the winning owner and a gift to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out.
