I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the opening day of the 2025 Irish flat racing season. We are delighted to be back racing here at the Curragh and are looking forward to a great season.
Last year we had 70 different winning trainers at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing.
This year we will race 24 times between now and November 2nd with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 30th. We have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed and Group 3 races and better class handicaps. We are grateful for the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our race sponsors who are critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.
Today’s race sponsors are the Irish European Breeders Fund, Capital Stud, The Tote, Bermingham Cameras, and Nua Healthcare who sponsor our feature race the Irish Lincolnshire for the second time and we are very grateful to Noel Dunne and his team for their support which is greatly appreciated.
I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We have made some changes to our offering for owners this year with the Tattersalls Owners & Trainers Club located on Level 2 of the racecourse. We hope you will relax and enjoy your day here and thank you for running your horse at the Curragh. We are always interested in hearing customer feedback.
Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.
Off the track, you can enjoy a variety of free family-friendly entertainment throughout the day. The Moyglare Kids Zone will feature a range of activities for younger racegoers, including glitter tattooing and storytelling from the Talking Tree. Families will also have the chance to meet Patches the Friendly Leprechaun, who I’m told loves a good photo op! Live music from , the Naas Hospital Choir and performances from traditional Irish musicians, Ceili Cottage also adds to the atmosphere across the racecourse which I hope you will enjoy.
We race here again at the Curragh in two weeks’ time on Saturday 29th March when our feature race will be the Lester Piggott Gladness Stakes. We look forward to welcoming you back here that day and regularly during the 2025 flat season.
Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT
CLEVER AND CUTE was placed twice in maidens on testing ground last year and this is effectively her first handicap having unseated rider when hitting a rail soon after the start on her latest start at Listowel. She hails from a family that the yard has done well with in the past including Group 3 winner Clever And Cool. Tai Tam Bay got a hefty rise for an impressive win on her reappearance at Naas last spring but held her form well throughout the year, while course winner Back Down Under and New Theory are others to note

In memorIam
As this is our first race meeting of 2025, the Curragh Racecourse wishes to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of three important figures in Irish horse racing who sadly passed away in recent months. In different ways, all three had a connection with the Curragh and will be sadly missed and remembered with affection.
hIs hIghness the aga khan
His Highness the Aga Khan was an inspirational man who contributed to the Irish horse racing and breeding industries in so many ways, not least as the driving force behind the redevelopment of the Curragh Racecourse. The main grandstand, which he jointly opened with An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar in 2019, is named in his honour, while on the track he enjoyed Irish Classic success eleven times including six Irish Derby wins with great horses such as Shergar, Shahrastani, Kahyasi, Sinndar, Alamshar and Harzand.

clem murphy
A cloud has hung over Irish racing since February 16th when Michael O’Sullivan passed away from injuries suffered in a fall at Thurles ten days previously. In his short life Michael made a very positive impression on all who met him and had already established himself as a national hunt jockey of the highest quality While Michael did not ride in races here at the Curragh, he was a regular on our gallops and the schooling ground and the staff remember him as a bright, friendly and very talented young man.
em Murphy made a significant contribution to ish racing and breeding and attended all the major race meetings here at the Curragh. As a senior member of the Coolmore team and a director the Breeders Cup he helped the Curragh in

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.
This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT
WIN ME OVER is Aidan O’Brien’s sole representative from three entries at the five-day stage and the Kingman filly is bred to be smart, being a sister to top-class miler Palace Pier Saol Nios Gile and Bint Queen Kindly are other newcomers to keep an eye on in the market. Murkala made a promising debut over C&D but didn’t really progress in two subsequent starts, while Wannabe Royal was placed on both outings at Dundalk over the winter Kitty Rickets showed promise in three maidens last year, while Copacabana Sands was unlucky in running when a close third in a valuable Naas event over this trip last autumn.
WIN: WIN ME OVER

CURRAGH COMMENT
Another wide-open renewal and 2022 winner RAADOBARG may be worth a shot. He won this off a mark of 98 and is now 3lb lower. The Night Of Thunder gelding was third 12 months ago off a mark of 105 and slipped down the handicap last season, despite a few good efforts. Chris Hayes has won the race twice in the last four years and Independent Expert is an interesting runner on her first outing for Stephen Thorne She was just edged out in the Irish Cambridgeshire and handles cut in the ground. Rhythm King ended last season in fine form and is another to consider

CURRAGH COMMENT
The 90-rated FIRST WAVE sets a good standard and should prove the one to beat if stripping fit. The Wootton Bassett colt was pipped close home on his debut here in October before another solid effort to chase home stablemate Serengeti at Dundalk later that month. Former Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner A Dream To Share is a fascinating runner He has had his issues and hasn’t set the world alight in two hurdle runs this winter, but has the ability to make a nice Flat horse Admiral Churchill chased home a smart horse in Rock Of Cashel in a Galway maiden last July and is another for the shortlist.

CURRAGH COMMENT
PANDION POWER may be able to pick up the winning thread again on his return to action. The Footstepsinthesand gelding won twice in soft ground in October and ended his campaign by finishing a solid third at Galway That final run was his third in a fortnight. Off the same mark, there may be another race in him. Escape Act was a winner in soft ground in England and is one to note on his first outing for Richard O’Brien. English horses can be well handicapped coming to Ireland. Matthew Smith saddles La La Lucrative, a winner at Leicester when last seen, and he’s another to note WIN: PANDION POWER DANGER: Escape Act

CURRAGH COMMENT
CHESTER NIMITZ ran a big race on his debut at Navan last season when pushing Majestic Wave to half a length, and it was a solid effort to finish third at Dundalk three weeks later Back on turf, there looks scope for further improvement. Alfred Tennyson is rated a couple of pounds superior and had some solid form last season. He’s a leading contender on the pick of his juvenile form. Mathan ran well with cut in the ground when second to Bodhi Bear at Navan and is another who has to come into calculations. WIN: CHESTER NIMITZ
