Phoenix Stakes

THE CURRAGH WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE MADE

Sponsoring the prestigious Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) at the Curragh Racecourse is a great honor for the Keeneland Association of Lexington, Kentucky, especially because these two organizations share a passion for horses and racing despite our geographical distance of some 3,700 miles. We are especially proud that Lexington and County Kildare have been Sister Cities since 1984 in a nod to cultural similarities as the heart and soul of the Thoroughbred industry in our respective areas. The world’s leading Thoroughbred auction house and host of elite race meets in April and October, including the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Keeneland this October will celebrate its 85th anniversary. Albeit much younger than the Curragh, Keeneland mirrors the famous Irish racecourse as an icon in the global racing community. Together we pursue a common goal to conduct racing at the highest level and to provide fans with a memorable experience while we celebrate the Thoroughbred. Keeneland is preparing to welcome guests from Ireland and around the world to Central Kentucky for two of our premier sales, the September Yearling Sale on Sept. 13-24 and the November Breeding Stock Sale, which begins Nov. 10. Between these two events is our world-class Fall Race Meet from Oct. 8-30. We invite you to attend our Fall sales and racing and experience all that Lexington has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you. Warm regards, SHANNON ARVIN Keeneland President and CEO

Welcome to the first of our Curragh August Festival of Racing. What a meeting we have to kick off with as it features the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, the first Group 1 race for 2 Year olds of the season. The card features eight races and oozes with quality. We would like to thank Keeneland for their generous support of the Curragh. Today we welcome Tony Lacy, while he is a regular visitor to Kildare, this is his first visit in his new role as Vice President of Sales with Keeneland and we would like to congratulate him on his appointment and wish him every success. We are delighted to have Ed Prosser here this afternoon. Ed is a great friend of the Curragh and has always been a big supporter of ours and this prestigious sponsorship. Keeneland have been rewarded with a great renewal as we see three of the first four in the GAIN Railway Stakes renew rivalry this afternoon. Last year we saw Lucky Vega win before commencing his new career at stud in Australia. This year’s race looks like another true classic renewal. The other group race is the Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint Stakes, a Group 3 contest for the speedy ones. Last year’s winner, Glen Shiel went on to Group 1 glory at Champions Day in Ascot. This year’s race has plenty of class and let’s hope another champion emerges today. Our other races are generously sponsored by The Loder Family, DMG Media, TRI Equestrian, Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital and the Irish Stallion Farms EBF. Sponsors make an invaluable contribution to racing and we would like to thank you to them all and ask you to support them whenever you can. A new addition to the Curragh August Festival of Racing this year is the Jockeys and Trainers Challenge. This is run on a points system over the four meetings and is very kindly sponsored by DMG Media. We are very grateful to them for this exciting initiative, it will be fun to follow over the month. For those of you reading this through our digital race card, I hope that you will enjoy the racing, either on TV or by following it through our social media channels. Today’s racing is being cover by Racing TV and ITV so there is no reason to miss out on the action. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we look forward to welcome greater numbers back before too long, hopefully for the Longines Irish Champions Weekend on the 11th and 12th September Ticket are not on sale yet but please visit www.irishchampionsweeekend.ie to register your interest and be the first in the queue to receive ticket & event updates. Thanks again for all your support of the Curragh, we really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy the racing and once again a big thank you to all our sponsors for their continued support. Kind regards PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

Official Handicap Rating

B O F J T

Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

2020 - 1st Thunder Moon 2nd Colour Sergeant 3rd Baton Rouge (1 min. 26.6 sec.)

CURRAGH COMMENT COWBOY JUSTICE was unfortunate to bump into an exciting prospect, who has subsequently won a Group 3, when finishing second on his debut over 6f here in June. The step up in trip should suit this colt and he is entitled to improve for that experience. Bluegrass is arguably the most noteworthy newcomer, being out of the top-class sprinter Quiet Reflection, although Music Magic and Swan Bay also merit plenty of respect.

CURRAGH COMMENT CONCERT HALL is bred to be good, being by Dubawi out of Oaks winner Was, and she went some way towards proving that with a smart victory over C&D last month. She looks to have much more to come ahead of possible tilts at Group company in the near future. Corviglia made a striking impression when winning at Leopardstown and she could be anything for a trainer that does particularly well with fillies. Cairde Go Deo should enjoy the drop in trip, while of the newcomers, History and Tostal are worth noting.

CURRAGH COMMENT

LIGHT REFRAIN has looked a sprinter going places this year, winning in good style in Group 3 company at York last time, and she continues to give the impression that the best is yet to come. With the ground likely to ride on the easy side, she looks capable of progressing once again. Romantic Proposal may be suited by the return to 6f and looks a serious threat, while A Case Of You is better than he showed last time and should make a greater impact under favourable conditions.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. A half-brother to the stable’s former star Slade Power, he ran with a fair amount of encouragement when fourth over 7f at Naas on debut and the drop back in trip is unlikely to be an issue. THE HISTORY OF THE PHOENIX STAKES

– A look back at some of the legendary winners who have made this race one of the most prestigious for two-year olds in Europe The Keeneland Phoenix Stakes has long been establishedas one of the top races for two-year-olds in Europe and it is a race with a storied history. First established in 1902, it was originally run over five furlongs at Phoenix Park in Dublin under the name of the Phoenix Plate. The name of the race was changed to the Phoenix Stakes in 1956 and having earned Group 2 status in 1971, it was upgraded to a Group 1 in 1979. Having been switched to Leopardstown for one year in 1982, it returned to Phoenix Park in 1983 with a new distance of six furlongs. When the Phoenix Park closed in 1990, the race was switched to Leopardstown, but the loss of the sprint track there in 2002 resulted in it being moved to its current home at the Curragh that year. While the race has gone through many changes during its long history, one thing that has remained consistent is its ability to produce top-class winners. One of the best known early victors in the race was Trigo who prevailed in the 1928 renewal for Jack Rogers.Moved to be trained by Dick Dawson in England as a three-year-old, he won the Derby at Epsom, the St Leger at Doncaster and returned to Ireland to win the Irish St Leger. Danehill Dancer – won the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes in 1995 before forging a successful career as a stallion

There was another notable winner in 1951, with the Darkie Prendergast-trained Windy City putting up a phenomenal performance to win the race by eight lengths. He went on to win the Gimcrack Stakes at York by five lengths and then narrowly failed to give the subsequent Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Pomare 11lb in the Prix d’Arenberg at Chantilly. Those performances were Paddy ‘Darkie’ Prendergast who trained sufficient to see him crowned Windy City to success in 1951 Champion Two-Year-Old in Ireland, Great Britain and France, which was a very rare treble at the time. Indeed, the Timeform rating of 142 that he achieved as a two-year-old remains the highest Paddy ‘Darkie’ Prendergast who trained Timeform rating ever achieved by a horse trained sufficient to see him crowned Windy City to success in 1951 in Ireland.

1976 produced one of the most impressive female winners in the history of the race. Cloonlara was trained by Vincent O’Brien and despite having won her first two starts in great style, she was sent off second favourite for the Phoenix Stakes behind the impressive Norfolk Stakes winner Godswalk. However, the race proved to be no contest, with Cloonlara producing a blistering display of front-running to prevail by six lengths. While she Fasliyev - the second of Aidan O’Briens never quite recaptured that form due to her sixteen winners of the deteriorating temperament, Cloonlara did make her Keeneland Phoenix Stakes mark as a broodmare, producing Glenstal who won the National Stakes at the Curragh and went on to enjoy success as a sire. On the subject of sires, one of the most notable Phoenix Stakes winners that went on to enjoy a highly-influential second career as a stallion was the winner of the 1995 renewal Danehill Dancer. Trained by Neville Callaghan, the son of Danehill went into the Phoenix Stakes off the back of a winning debut in a maiden at Newmarket and made light of his inexperience to prevail by a neck. The colt returned to Ireland Mastercraftsman -the last winners of the to win the National Stakes at the Curragh the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes to win a classic the following season following month and that would prove to the highlight of the remainder of his racing career. However, much greater things were to come for Danehill Dancer as a stallion, with him starting from a low base and progressing into one of the leading sires in Europe. His best-known offspring include Choisir, Fast Company, Jeremy, Legatissimo and his two winners of the Phoenix Stakes, Alfred Nobel and Mastercraftsman. Since Aidan O’Brien’s rise to power in Ballydoyle, he has been a dominant force in the Phoenix Stakes. Having won it for the first time with Lavery in 1998, he has saddled the winner of 15 of the 22 subsequent renewals of the race. There have been any amount of star performers amongst those winners, with the top-class juveniles Fasliyev, Johannesburg, Air Force Blue and Caravaggio standing out, along with the subsequent Classic winners George Washington and Mastercraftsman. Sioux Nation holds off Beckford to win the 2017 renewal of the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes

Can Aidan O’Brien add another to his tally today?

CURRAGH COMMENT GO BEARS GO was electric when winning the Group 2 Railway Stakes over C&D and it is hard to see that form being overturned here. An unlucky loser at Royal Ascot, David Loughnane’s colt can hand the British raiders a second win in four years in this contest after Advertise struck in 2018. The fact Dr Zempf went off 15/8 favourite for the Railway Stakes tells you the regard in which he is held and the son of Dark Angel could well pose the biggest threat. Two-time course winner Castle Star also makes the shortlist, along with Prettiest.

CURRAGH COMMENT Despite there being 16 other rivals, BOPEDRO could take some beating here on the back of an excellent third over C&D behind emphatic Galway winner Sirjack Thomas. A winner at Cork earlier in the season, and over C&D in the past for Jim Bolger, he gets the vote ahead of the reopposing Eagle’s Flight, who never seems to run a bad race. Triple course winner Ice Cold In Alex is always respected around here, while No More Porter is one to watch out for off a light weight. Handicap debutant Turbulence completes the shortlist.

WIN: BOPEDRO

DANGER: EAGLE’S FLIGHT

RACE EIGHT

With plenty of rain forecast in the run up to this meeting, this final race on the card may end up becoming a real test for these sprinters. PRETTY BOY FLOYD seemed to find things happening too quickly in the Rockingham last time and, with these conditions looking set to be more favourable, he may be capable of bouncing back in a competitive event. Three-year-old Screen Siren has the scope to improve now moving back up in trip and is worthy of respect, while San Aer caught the eye at Galway last time and shouldn’t be ruled out now dropping in distance.
