WELCOME
TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE
WELCOME TO THE UNIBET LINCOLN DAY Good afternoon, The Flat is back, we welcome back Unibet as our sponsor for this weekends’ Lincoln meeting. Last season’s meeting saw us all at the beginning of the first lock down and the race cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the first time since 1918 that there had been no Lincolnshire Handicap held in the UK We look forward to welcoming you back on course in the summer, until we meet again. We are excited to be staging todays Unibet Lincoln, behind closed doors. Todays’ big race, the is set for the off at 3.10 today. Inaugurated as a 2m handicap in 1853, the race initially took place in August and eventually became the 1m Lincolnshire Handicap in 1860. The most famous horse to run in the Lincoln was Sceptre, who won four classics in 1902 (she was also unluckily beaten in the Derby!). In 1902, she made her reappearance in the Lincoln, having been backed by her owner (and then trainer) Bob Sievier to win a sum equivalent to today’s values of 4 million pounds! However, she was beaten in a close finish. The following season she finished fifth. This year’s renewal could include the Newmarket-trained Haqeeqy. Recently, it was announced that trainer John Gosden, who won the Lincoln with Espresso Star in 2009, will, from this Saturday, be sharing training duties with his son, Thady. What a tremendous start to their partnership a win for Haqeeqy would be! Newmarket-based William Haggas has trained the Lincoln winner 4 times, a feat matched only by Jack Robinson, who did the same between 1896 and 1910. This weekend William could be represented by Johan, currently set to carry top weight of 9.10. We hope you enjoy todays’ spectacle and look forward to seeing you in person, very soon. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

1.25pm Unibet Brocklesby Conditions Stakes The last 22 runnings has seen the race won by many different trainers, but of those still training, Richard Fahey has won it the most times with 3 successes in the last 10 runnings so his VINTAGE CLOUDS must be given extra special attention
2.00pm Unibet Brocklesby Conditions Stakes Unibet ambassador Richard Hannon saddles two interesting runners in this listed contest, BEAT LE BON won the 2019 Unibet Golden Mile at Goodwood and was subsequently placed in group company. But he failed to win last term and his handicap mark is beginning to come down, a little, as a consequence. He caught the eye on the AW recently and it may be he will go close at a big price. MONTATHAM, the 7/2 favourite, finished an excellent 2nd in last season’s Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot prior to winning at the York Ebor meeting but ended the season on a disappointing note when trailing home when well fancied for the Cambridgeshire. 2.35pm Unibet Spring Mile A maximum twenty-two runners have been declared and this looks a typically difficult race to work out. Joint top weight is the Godolphin owned DUBAI SOUQ who has only raced four times in two seasons. The fact that connections continue with such a horse at the start of his four-year-old career suggests they feel he may be capable of improving further and maybe even making up into a listed or Group class performer If that was to be the case, he should take this. 3.10pm Unibet Lincoln h’cap EASTERN WORLD is a four-year-old who looks capable of progressing into a group performer and showed improved form to land a 9f turf handicap at Meydan in Dubai on 13th February. Unibet ambassador Richard Hannon has two Unibet Lincoln runners in OUZO and MAN OF THE NIGHT who are currently both offered at 20/1 by Unibet (at time of writing). Unibet jockey ambassador Jamie Spencer also has a ride on one of the more fancied runners in BRENTFORD HOPE who at this time last year was well forward in the betting for the Epsom Derby. He is capable of better and a fast run straight mile race might be just what he requires. Other horses to note include Karl Burke’s BORN TO BE ALIVE who took Wolverhampton’s Lincoln trial on 13th March. That race has been a launching pad for several horses who have run well in the real thing in recent years. 3.45pm Unibet Cammidge Trophy Unibet Stewards Cup winner SUMMERGHAND has an obvious chance in what promises to be a fast run event. The David O’Meara trained seven-year-old has run 40 times on turf and reached an all-time high having plundered the Unibet Stewards Cup from a rating of 108, carrying top weight. He may well be worth chancing today, with fitness assured. BRANDO, at 9, continues to defy his age and is rated 116 by the BHA. Although he failed to win last term – the first time that has happened since his 2-year-old days in 2014 – he still ran some fantastic races, notably when denied by a nose to land the G1 Qipco Champion Sprint Stakes at Ascot in October. If that Brando turned up here, there would only be one winner.

The market should provide plenty of clues for the opening 2-y-o race of the season, but the speedily bred VINTAGE CLARETS is an obvious place to start given Richard Fahey’s excellent record in this. Forca Brasil’s sales price rose significantly from foal to yearling and looks another likely type, while the booking of James Doyle catches the eye on Wonderful World, whose yard won this in 2018. 1-2-3: 1.VINTAGE CLARETS 2.FORCA BRASIL (IRE) 3.WONDERFUL WORLD KEY colours

HORSE WELFARE COMES FIRST AT DONCASTER At every race meeting at Doncaster our top priority is the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. We have a dedicated team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting. Use of Screens It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. This does NOT reflect the severity of any injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse! 13

This is likely to go to one of the relatively unexposed 4-y-os, with POET’S LADY earning the vote ahead of Acquitted, Mascat, Arctic Vega and Artistic Rifles, in that order of preference. The selection was beaten 6 lengths by Freyja on her handicap debut at Hamilton in September, but that form now looks significantly stronger than it did at the time and she remains open to improvement.

Click to watch Unibet ambassador, Richard Hannon talk through both of his runners in the 2021 Unibet Lincoln Ouzo and Man Of The Night...
Unibet Lincoln H 1. The 1948 Lincoln Handicap (still run at Lincoln then) had 58 runners, a record for a British flat race. The winner was the 33/1 shot Commissar, trained by Arthur Budgett and owned by his brother Alan. 3. In 2009 Expresso Star was jockey Jimmy Fortune’s third triumph in the Lincoln Handicap. He’d been the ante-post favourite since January, but only on the morning of the race did his trainer confirm he would run. His SP was 100/30, the shortest priced winner since 1942. 5. An exciting finish to the 2013 Lincoln ended in favour of Levitate, who came out on top by a short head and a nose. Darren Egan’s three-pound claim was crucial. This was one of four wins for Levitate at Doncaster. 7. Rain-softened ground meant the 2016 Lincoln was seven seconds slower than the previous year’s race. Secret Brief, who won a £280,000 sales race as a two-year-old, had the benefit of being trained in the warmth of Dubai prior to winning the Doncaster feature. 9. In 2018 Addeybb gave William Haggas a record fourth training success in the Lincoln. He looked like a Group horse in a handicap, and so it proved. So far, he has won 11 of his 20 races, including the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day and a £674,000 Group 1 in Australia.
Handicap Stories 2. The best horse to run in the Lincoln didn’t win it; Sceptre, a three-year-old filly, was heavily backed to win in 1902 but went down by a head. She went on to win the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger, the only outright winner of four of the five classics. 4. After a short-priced Lincoln favourite hit the bookies in 2009, they suffered again the following year when Penitent spreadeagled the field to win at 3/1. Later in his career he had problems with his feet and joints, yet still managed to win eleven races in all. 6. Gabrial had a rough passage in the 2015 Lincoln, but found daylight just in time and got up in the last 50 yards to win in a photo finish. Gabrial won nine of his 93 races and is one of a host of horses containing the name of owner Dr Marwan Koukash’s son. 8. Bravery, a Ballydoyle cast-off, won the 2017 Lincoln on his first outing for his new owners. They bought him for about a tenth of the amount his previous owners had paid. He looked like a bargain. Unfortunately, after his Doncaster victory the horse failed to win any of his 21 future races. 10. Auxerre had only raced four times, winning three of them, before lining up for the most recent running of the Lincoln in 2019. The heavily backed 5/2 favourite led all the way and won easily. The sky was the limit for this four-year-old, but he died before he could run again.
Who do you fancy to land this year’s Unibet Lincoln?

Having run out the cosy winner of a hot 7f 3-y-o race at last year’s Leger meeting, HAQEEQY appeals as the type to make his mark in top-end handicaps this term so he gets the nod with a talented apprentice taking 7lb off. Charlie Appleby has a very good recent record in this so Eastern World rates a big danger after his Meydan win. River Nymph and, at bigger odds, Orbaan are also shortlisted. 1-2-3: 1.HAQEEQY (IRE) 2.EASTERN WORLD (IRE) 3.RIVER NYMPH KEY colours
