WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM

My thanks go to today’s race sponsors Vertem for their generous sponsorship of today’s races, and their continued support of the racecourse. This is the inaugural running of the Vertem Eider Chase over the new extended trip of 4m1f and 56yds. This came about as a result of a review of the race to improve safety and we have moved the start back so the first fence is better positioned and wider. So this marathon test will see horses jumping a total of 26 fences. We look forward to seeing 2019 winner Crosspark back here at Gosforth Park having sadly lost last year’s renewal due to waterlogging. Today’s race will take some getting given we have been very wet in Jan and February but we are glad to be back on turf again having lost 3 fixtures to frost snow and waterlogging this year. Myself and the team hope you enjoy the action wherever you may be watching and hope that you all stay safe and well and look forward to welcoming you back to High Gosforth Park in the near future. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

SLANELOUGH is hardly one for maximum faith given his 0-14 chase record but he has been knocking on the door this season and had Discko des Plages behind him when second at Doncaster last month. Richard Hobson’s charge likely would have improved to win again at Uttoxeter last weekend had he not unseated 3 out but his jumping is a concern, so Rose Dobbin’s 9-y-o can confirm Doncaster placings.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk 15
