We continue to live and work in strange and challenging times but let us all hope that things get better in the New Year. In the meantime, enjoy today’s racing, good luck, stay safe and have a Very Happy Christmas. BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Monday 30th November 2020

A wet Monday afternoon hosted our last meeting, where we staged six races.

The first race saw a turn up, with Sawpit Sienna defying big odds of 40/1 to make a winning handicap debut on her first run for Samuel Drinkwater. Formerly with Richard Bandey, the winner had showed little in her four starts under rules to date but was in receipt of a tonne of weight and made convincing work of the race, winning by three lengths. She may have been five pounds out of the handicap, but Robbie Dunne never looked troubled onboard her, and she cruised through the race, tracking the long-time leader Bertie Blake before extending over the second last and keeping on well to run out a mightily impressive and comfortable winner. Jack Quinlan rode Captain Speaking to victory in the Racing Is Everyone’s Sport Handicap Chase, winning in

fine style for trainer Nick Littmoden. The winner made all the running to make it three wins in a row off a new mark of 107. He jumped right a few times but was never in trouble really, and Jack Quinlan let him pop over the last few fences before clearing away to win by 13 lengths for the We Live In Norfolk Partnership.

Favourite backers were never worried over Pasvolsky, who made all the running in the St Andrew’s Day “National Hunt” Auction Maiden Hurdle under Tom Cannon for Chris Gordon. Despite giving away a chunky amount of weight, Pasvolsky made a winning hurdling debut in good style not long after winning a bumper at Wincanton. He was a fair horse in the pointing field, placing twice, and handicaps look the next step for him. The Testerton Handicap Chase went to Martin Smith’s Friends Don’t Ask, who continued a good run at the track for the trainer. His winner saw Jack Quinlan land a double onboard the 10/1 shot, who won cosily by five and a half lengths. Always prominent, he travelled strongly throughout and saw off the field in a good manner, in receipt of a handy amount of weight from his rivals. Chris Gordon landed a double when Can’t Stop Now won the juvenile hurdle with Joshua Moore in the saddle, another convincing winner on the day. Eight lengths was the winning

margin over Pam Sly’s Grouseman, and Can’t Stop Now was another fine winner who made all the running on the soft ground. He was never truly challenged and was able to dictate affairs from the front end, using all his staying power to extend his lead over the last and draw away. The final race of the day saw Donald McCain’s Count Jurado come out on top in a good battle with the Christian Williams-trained Goldencard, with Sam Twiston-Davies winning this battle in the saddle over Jack Tudor. Goldencard tried to make all the running but Count Jurado had too much lass and did well to defy some imbalance at the weights, courtesy of Tudor’s 3lb claim. A good jump over the last sealed the win for Count Jurado, and he won by three lengths.

PLAY SMARTER

SILKSTONE has come down 10lb in his last 3 starts and looks worth chancing for his in-form stable after shaping a bit better than the result at Market Rasen. Gorham’s Cave rates an obvious danger after going down only to a next-time-out winner over C&D last time. Gabrielle du Seuil and Chess Player are possible improvers in handicaps.
