elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the first day of the 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

We are delighted to be the first major flat race meeting to welcome back full capacity crowds following what has been a challenging 18 months for us all. First and foremost, we would like to thank you for all your patience during these challenging times. It is fantastic to have you back for a week that has it all: world-class racing, fabulous style, and thrilling entertainment for all.

Looking forward to today’s feature race, the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup looks to be as thrilling a spectacle as it did when it was first run 209 years ago. The two-mile stayers’ race, which carries a prize fund of £500,000, sees the John Gosden trained Stradivarius look to re-write the history books by winning a fifth consecutive Goodwood Cup, a feat unlikely to be surpassed. Another of the highlights on day one of the meeting is the £300,000 Group 2 Unibet Lennox Stakes, which will see some of the very best seven-furlong specialists go head-to-head. It is arguably the most prestigious race over this distance in the country. Aside from the racing, the fashion stakes will be high as Richard Quinn, the British fashion designer, showcases three gorgeous outfits which will be worn by models circulating around the racecourse throughout the afternoon. We are incredibly grateful to today’s race sponsors the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Unibet, and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of the fixture. With a total of eight races to enjoy, I hope that you have a wonderful day here at Goodwood.

In 1827, the fifth Duke of Richmond had his first classic success with Gulnare in the Oaks. The horse is seen here with his trainer John Kent and jockey in the Richmond racing colours.

The 1884 winner of the Goodwood Cup, St Simon, was an outstanding racehorse, who was later referred to as the most influential stallion of the late Victorian and Edwardian era.

Today ’s Feature The al shaqab goodwood cup

The Qatar Goodwood Cup One of the oldest events in the racing calendar, the £500,000 Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup was established in 1812 when it was run over three miles. Open to three-year-olds and upwards, although the distance was reduced to two miles in 1833, it then settled at two miles five furlongs from 1852 and is regarded as a real test of stamina. Its glittering role of honour is illuminated with the names of some of the sport’s most celebrated stayers, among them the amazing Double Trigger who carved himself a piece of racing history by becoming the first and only horse to win the Goodwood Cup three times in 1995, 1997 and 1998. Other notable winners during the 19th century were the supremely tough and talented filly Virago in 1854 and the unbeaten St Simon, widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, who left an indelible mark on the race in 1884. The race has been successfully targeted by a number of overseas-trained horses, the most charismatic of which was the Hungarian-bred mare Kincsem, who was unbeaten in 54 races and won the Goodwood Cup in 1878. There have been many outstanding performers who have won this race in recent times, including Persian Punch (2001/2003), whose ashes were scattered at Goodwood, and Yeats (2006/2008). This year, the John Gosden trained and Bjorn Nielson owned, Stradivarius looks to win the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, a feat that is unlikely to be achieved again.

Fashion Inspired By Goodwood’s Heritage

We’re thrilled to announce that today Richard Quinn will launch the new ‘Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award’ in association with the British Fashion Council. This exciting new award has been specially created to nurture rising British talent in the world of fashion. The idea was inspired by Nabil Nayal, who was commissioned to create three one-off pieces for Goodwood in 2019, and the winner of the annual award will unveil their designs during the Opening Ceremony of the Qatar Goodwood Festival each year. For 2021, the talented Richard Quinn, known for his flamboyant use of print and extravagant style, is launching the award with three fabulous couture gowns inspired by Goodwood’s heritage. Richard says, “I am thrilled to be partnering with Goodwood and excited to immerse myself in the rich history and exciting sense of occasion. It’s wonderful to be celebrating high fashion just as restrictions are being lifted and I can’t wait to see my designs on the Goodwood Racecourse.” The Qatar Goodwood Festival has always been known for its ‘England in Summer’ fashion focus, ever since King Edward VII and Lillie Langtry frequented the event, and Richard has delved into Goodwood’s past and drawn inspiration from the elegant Edwardian style that formed a significant part of the history of horseracing here. The three gowns will be revealed at the racecourse today and will provide a headturning moment during the Festival, which is known for its garden party atmosphere and quintessentially English style. The ‘Goodwood Talent in Fashion’ Award will be held every year and the winning designer selected by a panel of judges to include The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, Sian Westerman, Non-Executive Director, British Fashion Council and Lydia Slater, Editor of Harper’s Bazaar. The pieces will be kept at Goodwood House and become part of the Goodwood Fashion Collection.

The Course couRse chaRacTeRisTics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Unibet ‘You’re On’ Chesterfield Cup Handicap

Maydanny won over C&D at last year’s festival and despite now racing from a 12lb higher mark he showed he was ready to return to the winner’s enclosure with a great 2nd placing at Sandown last time out.

Back to Goodwood Handicap

Jabbarockie showed great speed to win at Chester two runs back, and LTO at Haydock he returned lame, so you can excuse that 9 ½ length defeat. Back to h’cap company he must have a decent chance on this speed track.

You need a real 7f specialist here, and Godolphin’s Space Blues can become the third dual winner of this event since its inception in 2000. He put up a devasting display 12 months ago and on official ratings is a little ahead of his rivals, his chief opponentl may be stablemate Creative Force.

Anghaam takes a step down in trip back to the one-mile trip she has won at twice already this season and with Jim Crowley in the saddle for the very first time, this Richard Hannon trained 3-y-o can get back to winning ways.

R a c e 4, 3.35 p m

Caroline Dale, who has form on soft and faster ground conditions, is the choice in the closing contest. She wears a hood for the first time in an attempt to return to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in over 12 months, but she ran a much better race at Windsor LTO when just failing by a head to beat an inform, course specialist.

R a c e 2, 2.25 p m

Unibet ambassador Richard Hannon runs two here and both have chances although Lusail looks the most likely and is the selection to win this race for the first time for Richard Hannon Jr. Richard Hannon snr won this contest for four consecutive years between 2010 & 2013. Read more about Hannon’s runners today in his Unibet blog.

Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup

This race is all about Stradivarius. Unibet have laid John Gosden’s 7-y-o from 2/1 down to 4/5, with plenty of money coming in for him once the news that Royal Ascot Gold Cup winner, Subjectivist, would not run. Stradivarius is unbeaten here, and is by far the worst result for Unibet on day one of the QGF.

Always an informative maiden, and any money for the Mark Johnston newcomer Harb would be interesting. But the form horse and selection has to be the Tom Marquand ridden Scattering. He finished a close-up 3rd on debut at Newcastle in a novice event when very green; the 2nd that day runs in the G2 Unibet Vintage stakes earlier in the card.

Race Summary Mark Johnston has a tremendous record in this contest and last year’s winner MAYDANNY can retain his crown. The son of Dubawi quickened clear to outclass his rivals 12 months ago and it would be no surprise if he was bang there at the business end again. Lucander had plenty of excuses in the John Smith’s Cup and he could mount a bold challenge sitting 1lb below his last winning mark. William Buick gets the ride on Migration and he demands the utmost respect after an encouraging reappearance.

Race Summary A race that may be dominated by those who have already proven successful in this company, with Coventry winner BERKSHIRE SHADOW tipped to edge out July Stakes scorer Lusail. Both carry a 3lb penalty but still look to hold an advantage over their rivals, while the step up in trip looks unlikely to cause any issues for either runner. Austrian Theory also looks worth noting, with his lack of experience costing him when sixth in the Superlative at Newmarket last time.

2020 WINNER: SPACE BLUES (IRE) 4 9 3 William Buick 2-1 (Charlie Appleby) 11 ran

Race Summary Space Blues returns from a break seeking to defend his crown in this race and warrants serious respect. However, a chance is taken on fellow Godolphin representative CREATIVE FORCE, who posted an eyecatching run in the July Cup at Newmarket. The three-year-old won the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and should appreciate the step back up in trip. Kinross is respected after his Group 3 success at Haydock, while Duke Of Hazzard and Toro Strike can’t be discounted, with both holding strong course form.

2020 WINNER: STRADIVARIUS (IRE) 6 9 9 Frankie Dettori 4-7 (John Gosden) 7 ran STEWARDS NOTED: STRADIVARIUS: Following its run on 17/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was impeded turning for home.

Race Summary All eyes will be on STRADIVARIUS as he aims to land a historic fifth success in this contest. The seven-year-old remains unbeaten at the course and despite finishing fourth in the Ascot Gold Cup, could prove too classy for his rivals over this trip. He gets the vote ahead of Amhran Na Bhfiann, who arrives on the back of a tremendous victory in the Curragh Cup. Nayef Road finished second in this last year and he could be the surprise package if allowed to dictate from the front.

Win: Stradivarius

Race Summary The Mark Johnston-trained DESERT SAFARI was successful when last seen over course and distance and despite failing to trouble the judge in recent starts, he may be capable of a much bolder showing now returning to the minimum distance. He gets the vote ahead of King Of Stars, who continues to get better for this stable and looks a serious danger, while Rewaayat still has the scope for further improvement and shouldn’t be ruled out.
