elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the second day of the 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
We are always true to our rich heritage here on the South Downs, while constantly moving forward to develop the Racecourse. The Earl’s Lawn, located at the heart of the Gordon Enclosure, is a recent addition that brings to life a day at the races. Racegoers can enjoy live music, seafood and Veuve Clicquot, or simply sit in the sun and celebrate with friends after being apart for many months. The Qatar International Stakes gets us underway with the proceedings. The £400,000 mile contest sponsored by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club is the most valuable race in UK Arabian racing and the most valuable over that distance for Arabians in Europe. Today’s £1 million Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the day and is sure to be another thrilling clash between the three-year olds, otherwise known as the Classic generation, and their elders. The supporting card will feature the Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes. The race – which is run over five furlongs for two-year-olds – looks highly competitive, and we are sure to see a star of the future in the making. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Unibet, Château d’Esclans and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of today’s racing. As we look forward to a total of eight races this afternoon, I hope that you have a memorable time here at Goodwood.

Today ’s Feature t h e Q ata r s u s s e x s ta k e s
The Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the flagship race of the five-day Festival and has taken on even greater importance since a ground-breaking partnership with its title sponsor. One of Europe’s most valuable mile races for three-year-olds and upwards, the prize money stands at over £1million. It has become Goodwood’s race of champions, with a reputation of bringing together some of the most outstanding horses in training year-on-year. Most of the best milers in recent years feature on the race’s distinguished role of honour – Kris (1979), Chief Singer (1984), Soviet Star (1987), Warning (1988), Zilzal (1989), Aljabr (1999), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Rock of Gibraltar (2002) and Canford Cliffs (2010). Then came Frankel, who went on to create a piece of Goodwood racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race twice before eventually retiring unbeaten in 14 races. Toronado, owned by His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani, overturned the favourite Dawn Approach in a thrilling renewal of this Group 1 contest in 2013, but any chance of a similar upset occurring in 2014 never materialised with Kingman winning in untroubled fashion. In 2017 however, a surprise result did arise with seven-year-old Here Comes When fended off the challenge of hot favourite Ribchester before another seven-year-old, Lightning Spear followed up in 2018. Last year, Mohaather raised the roof when producing a devastating turn of foot for Marcus Tregoning and the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The Course course characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Read Through the Card
Ed Nicholson, Head of Racing at Unibet, our Official Betting Partner of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. r a c e 1, 1.50 p m
Unibet 15 to Go handicap
Mark Johnston’s horses are always worth a second look at this meeting, and both his horses here look to have chances, but preference is for the lightly raced Kings Prince. He’s two from three, and although his unbeaten run came to an end LTO at Hamilton in a listed event, he is expected to have improved for the experience and looks overpriced at around 10/1.
r a c e 2, 2.25 p m
Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes
This Group 3 fillies and mares event has an open feel about it. William Haggas and Tom Marquand took this event 12 months ago and I expect Sacred to go very close for that pair again. Haggas is aiming to win this contest for the third time in the last four years, and Sacred takes a significant step down in class having contested the 1,000 Guineas LTO.
r a c e 3, 3.00 p m
Markel Molecomb Stakes
Unibet Brocklesby winner, Chipotle, is out relatively quickly having had a luckless run in the big Newbury sales race LTO and granted a trouble free passage, this Royal Ascot Windsor Castle Stakes winner will go mighty close. But preference goes to Fearby who is improving and whose victory in a Sandown listed event last time on soft ground makes him the one to beat in my mind.
r a c e 4, 3.35 p m
Qatar Sussex Stakes
The feature event of the day with favourite Poetic Flare going for a fourth Group 1 victory of his short career. But Unibet ambassador
Richard Hannon takes him on with two, with preference for Snow Lantern who looked a filly on the improve last time and represents each way value against the odds-on favourite.
r a c e 5, 4.10 p m
British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes
A tricky little conditions event where the ground conditions may prove difficult for some. Not much form to go on, but on the book Canonized rates the selection. He is one of the most experienced in the line-up and has won the most races – the worry would be if the ground was soft, as all his races, and wins, have been on faster conditions.
r a c e 6, 4.45 p m
British EBF Premier Fillies Handicap
Achelois won in the style of an improving sort last time at Ascot and is taken to win his third race of the season for Andrew Balding. Prado, with Unibet ambassador Jamie Spencer aboard, is suggested as an each way alternative to the favourite as she has good form at Goodwood and has run in better company than this in the past.
r a c e 7, 5.20 p m
World Pool handicap
Trainer George Baker usually aims one at a Qatar Goodwood Festival and his La Maquina is worth an interest in the concluding event having won at Newmarket last time out. Connections had an entry for this gelding in the more competitive Unibet Golden Mile, but takes this on instead. He is worth an each way interest.

NUMBER OF DECLARED RUNNERS 18 BETTING FORECAST 11-4 Ebraz (GB), 3-1 Deryan (FR), 7-2 Tayf (FR), 5-1 Lady Princess (FR), 12-1 Farhaa (GB), 12-1 Loolwa (GB), 14-1 Abiyah Athbah (GB), 16-1 Al Kaaser (FR), 25-1 Toofaan (GB), 50-1 Storm Troupour (US), 100-1 Paramer Angel (GB)
Race Summary Another vintage renewal, featuring some of the world’s best Arabians. Deryan gained top rating for his Dubai Kahayla Classic win in March and was a good second in this last year. Lady Princess may be small, but she has an impressive turn of foot and split perennial rivals Ebraz and Tayf over further in February’s HH The Amir Sword. That pair return to go head-to-head here for an incredible fifth time, Tayf won their first meeting and has shown rejuvenated form in both Paris and Doha since finishing third here last year. It’s a tight call between the international runners, but EBRAZ’s form here of 2211 is hard to dismiss and he looked as good as ever when winning in La Teste this month. He is taken to record his eighth Group 1PA win and a hat-trick in this contest.

2020 WINNER: MAMBO NIGHTS (IRE) 3 8 12 Andrea Atzeni 9-1 (Richard Hannon) 10 ran STEWARDS NOTED: NAGANO: Following its run on 17/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was impeded in running. VINA BAY: Following its run on 14/5/2021 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.
Race Summary NAGANO would have almost certainly made the frame in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last time but for being badly hampered on a couple of occasions inside the final couple of furlongs. With a clear run, he should take plenty of stopping off the same mark. Siskany finished just in front of the selection on that occasion but, whilst he was hampered late on, he did not meet as much trouble as the selection. The progressive Kolisi faces a tough task on his handicap debut but looks to have a bright future, while Kings Prince also holds claims.

2020 WINNER: ONE MASTER 6 9 3 Tom Marquand 6-4 (William Haggas) 12 ran STEWARDS NOTED: LAST EMPIRE: Following its run on 21/5/2021 it was reported that the horse was coming into season.
Race Summary Vadream seems likely to be popular after an unlucky second at York in the Group 3 Summer Stakes, failing to get a clear run and then being hampered, and she could put in a big effort under Jamie Spencer with both the going and trip in her favour. Lullaby Moon may run a big race at a price as she bids to keep her unbeaten Goodwood record intact, but BOUNCE THE BLUES could have the edge. She should handle the going better than most, as well as the drop back from 1m, and may well mount a serious challenge.

Race Summary Chipotle has had plenty of experience this season, including a win in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, and is likely to be on the premises. However, a chance is taken on FEARBY, who arrives here bidding to complete a hat-trick for in-form trainer Edward Bethell. The son of Havana Gold created a big impression when landing the Listed Coral Dragon Stakes at Sandown earlier this month, with Mojomaker and Kaboo in behind, and he can take this class rise in his stride. Armor, Chimgan and Swayze are also respected.

Race Summary POETIC FLARE rose to the top of the pecking order for three-year-old milers when landing the St James’s Palace Stakes in devastating style at Royal Ascot last month and, on his first start against the older generation, looks capable of firmly cementing himself as the leading miler in Europe. In a race where the Classic generation may hold sway, Alcohol Free should make another bold bid, having run well despite racing too exuberantly in the Falmouth last time, while Snow Lantern quickened up well when winning that particular race and looks a serious danger.

2020 WINNER: MISS JINGLES (IRE) 2 9 0 William Buick 7-2 (Charlie Appleby) 6 ran STEWARDS NOTED: FLOTUS:Following its run on 9/7/2021 it was reported that the horse ran too freely. ILLUSTRATING:Following its run on 16/6/2021 it was reported that the horse lost a shoe.
Race Summary A very competitive renewal, but preference is for FLOTUS, who won over 6f on soft ground here on her debut in May. She has been too keen over that trip on her two subsequent starts, which suggests that this fast 5f should be perfect for her. Anadora and Vertiginous are obvious threats to the selection having both shown promise at Royal Ascot on their most recent outings. Others to consider are Canonized and Illustrating.
Danger: Anadora

Percy’s Pride is seeking a hat-trick of wins and, having been raised 5lb for her latest success at Ascot, may still be a step ahead of the assessor, while Seattle Rock looks well worth a try at this trip and can go well with Ryan Moore back in the plate.

2020 WINNER: TORO STRIKE (USA) 3 9 7 Oisin Murphy 3-1 (Richard Fahey) 17 ran STEWARDS NOTED: HIERONYMUS:Following its run on 28/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.
Race Summary Dutch Decoy looks able to reverse recent form with Magical Wish at these weights, with both the Mark Johnston horse and the Richard Hannon gelding (second last year) in with solid chances of a place with a clear run. Tintoretto can’t be ruled out, but EPIC ENDEAVOUR could surprise them all if getting an easy lead. First-time cheekpieces may keep him more focussed here and, after fading over a mile recently, this trip could see him in a better light.
Win: Epic Endeavour
Danger: Dutch Decoy
