elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the third day of the 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Racing begins today with the Magnolia Cup presented by Markel, an all-female charity race run in aid of UK charity Smart Works. Eleven inspirational women will become jockeys for the day, wearing bespoke silks created by iconic British fashion designer Bella Freud, the ladies have been training relentlessly for months, and we wish them the very best of luck in the culmination of this enormous challenge. The highlight of the afternoon’s racing is the £600,000 Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, for the world’s best fillies and mares. This race was inaugurated in 1840, and we look forward to seeing another great name added to its illustrious roll of honour. Aside from the thrilling racing action, it is well worth a visit to the Gusbourne Pavilion which sits above the parade ring. Gusbourne who are an official partner of Goodwood Racecourse, grow and produce award-winning vintage English Sparkling Wine just three miles from the racecourse. It is the perfect way to celebrate everything that is fantastic about British produce while soaking up the summer sun and celebrating alongside friends and family. We give thanks to our race sponsors Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Markel, Unibet, John Pearce Racing, and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of racing today. I hope that you have a very enjoyable time here at Goodwood this afternoon.

Today ’s Feature T h e Q aTa r N a s s a u s Ta k e s
Inaugurated in 1840, the Qatar Nassau Stakes celebrates the friendship formed between the fifth Duke of Richmond and the Dutch Royal family, the House of Orange and Nassau. A Group 1 event with a prize fund of £600,000, it is the most significant mid-summer race of the year for fillies and mares. Run over a distance just short of ten furlongs, it was originally restricted to three-year-olds but was opened up to older horses in 1975 and continues to be targeted by leading owners and trainers. The brilliance of dual Classic race winners Thebais and La Fleche helped put the Nassau Stakes on the map in the latter half of the 19th century, after which it continued to grow in popularity and importance. Supreme champion fillies, Sceptre and Pretty Polly, enhanced the race’s burgeoning reputation still further in the early 20th century. Sceptre was surprisingly beaten in the Sussex Stakes, but bounced back later in the week to claim victory in the 1902 renewal of the Nassau Stakes. However, it was legendary jockey Lester Piggott with a haul of five winners and Newmarket trainers Sir Noel Murless, Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Henry Cecil who would dominate the race’s post-war history. Sir Henry’s record eight winners include the wonderful filly Midday, who carved herself a slice of racing history by becoming the first horse to win the race three times in consecutive years from 2009. 2017 saw British and Irish Champion Trainer Aidan O’Brien take back-to-back victories in the race as Winter ran out a comfortable winner under the expert guidance of Ryan Moore, following Minding’s success in 2016. Dierdre completed a memorable win for her Japanese connections, securing a first Group winner for the East Asian country on UK soil in over a decade under an astute ride from Oisin Murphy. Last year, 22-year-old trainer Donnacha O’Brien, youngest son of Aidan O’Brien celebrated a first winner with his first-ever runner when Fancy Blue denied One Voice in a pulsating finish. Charity Ladies’ Race a b r i e F h i s T o ry A decade ago the Magnolia Cup, presented by Markel was conceived as an innovative way to push the boundaries of human capabilities within the horseracing world by creating an inclusive community, supporting women and their well-being. By harnessing the power, glamour and vivacity of Ladies’ Day at the Qatar Goodwood Festival; the Magnolia Cup presented by Markel brings together a cast of dedicated amateur jockeys who take on months of intensive training in order to ride in this unique race, most having never set foot in a racing yard before their training begins. It requires total commitment to success, a zealous pursuit of excellence and sheer hard work to win. Celebrating its tenth year in 2021, the highly-anticipated Magnolia Cup presented by Markel will honour these amazing women and their unique achievements. This year we are thrilled to be supporting Smart Works as the Magnolia Cup presented by Markel chosen charity, as we continue to uphold the tradition of working with charities dedicated to improving the lives of women. Smart Works is a UK based charity that provides high quality clothes and interview training for unemployed women in need. Each year, Goodwood selects a well-known female-led fashion brand to create a collection of bespoke silks for the jockeys to wear, and in 2021, we couldn’t be more excited that that the iconic Bella Freud has agreed to provide some of her incredible designs in her now famously recognisable style. Working to bring these stunning designs to life; Allertons, who are famous for creating jockey silks for some of the highest profile owners, trainers and jockeys in the world, and their hugely talented team of artists, designers, screen printers and seamstresses have been an integral and essential part of the Magnolia Cup presented by Markel, since 2011. The biggest and most important contribution comes from the women themselves. These brave amateur jockeys train tirelessly for months leading up to the race, undertaking everything from early morning racing sessions to intensive fitness programmes and jockey training classes. Each rider must pass the BRS assessment before being permitted to ride in today’s five and a half furlong race in front of a capacity Ladies Day crowd.

Ed Nicholson, Head of Racing at Unibet, our Official Betting Partner of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. r a c e 1, 1.50 p m
Unibet ’15 to Go’ Kincsem Handicap
If jockey Silvestre de Sousa can settle Aerion Power in the early stages, the Sir Michael Stoute three-year-old should be too classy for his rivals here. Despite pulling early last time out, Aerion Power almost landed a similar contest at Doncaster.
r a c e 2, 2.25 p m
Unibet Richmond Stakes
Gubbass continued the trainer’s (and his father’s) remarkable success in the big sales race at Newbury last time out, and this unbeaten colt is the choice of the powerful Hannon team here. He has already posted some high speed figures and is taken to extend his unbeaten run at the chief expense of Asymmetric, who was runner up in the similar class July Stakes at Newmarket recently.
r a c e 3, 3.00 p m
John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes
Frankie Dettori teams up with Aidan O’Brien to ride Sir Lucan and will be popular with racegoers, but the selection is for another O’Brien runner in Wordsworth ridden by Ryan Moore. Although Wordsworth’s sole victory came in a maiden, he has been competitive in both the G1 Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris, and this represents a drop in class. He can get back into winning ways.
r a c e 4, 3.35 p m
in her last four races and was a very close runner up at Royal Ascot last time. She also has form on both soft and faster ground conditions. She should take all the beating here.
r a c e 5, 4.10 p m
Goodwood Racecourse Patrons Nursery Handicap
Unbeaten colt Adjuvant may have been given a lenient handicap mark here and Michael Bell’s two year is expected to continue his fine start to his racing career. Richard Hannon two-yearolds are always worth a second glance at this meeting and Ardbraccan should place at the very least, but preference is for Adjuvant.
r a c e 6, 4.45 p m
Tatler EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Plenty of runners declared here at the 48-hour stage, and again both of Richard Hannon’s 2 year olds should be considered (Helene and Isemel) but preference is for Rouge Et Noir who has posted a decent speed figure already and has improvement to come.
r a c e 7, 5.20 p m
World Pool Handicap
Caroline Dale, who has form on soft and faster ground conditions, is the choice in the closing contest. She wears a hood for the first time in an attempt to return to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in over 12 months, but she ran a much better race at Windsor LTO when just failing by a head to beat an inform, course specialist.
Qatar Nassau Stakes
There will plenty willing on Lady Bowthorpe here, but her form is a little below that of favourite Audarya who has won two G1 races Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 40

Race Summary Plenty of these have claims but a chance can be taken with KING FRANKEL, who failed to fire at Newmarket last time but his previous form is much more encouraging. The return to a softer surface may suit this colt and he was fourth off this mark in the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. Aerion Power’s rider eased up too early when looking a likely winner at Doncaster last time and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to note are Alfaadhel, Mr Excellency and Taraashoq.

Race Summary Despite the small field this looks a typically competitive Richmond Stakes. Gubbass comes here after an impressive win in the Weatherbys Super Sprint and may improve for the step up to 6f, while Perfect Power may also improve for the extra distance after winning the Norfolk at Royal Ascot. They both set the standard, however, with the ground likely to be on the easy side it might be worth chancing EBRO RIVER. He has won twice on soft ground and looks a big player.

The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes John Pearce Racing is delighted to sponsor the 109th renewal of the Gordon Stakes. Born just after World War 1, John Pearce was schooled in England before returning to Hong Kong to join his family business, Hutchison International. Mr Pearce used his success in business to pursue a passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds. During almost 80 years of racehorse ownership, he had a particularly successful partnership with the trainer, Geoff Wragg. Together they won the Ascot Gold Cup with Arcadian Heights (1994), before coming a close second in the Derby with Dragon Dancer (2006). Mr Pearce was a long-time fan of, and regular visitor to, ‘Glorious Goodwood’. The sponsorship of the Gordon Stakes complements Mr Pearce’s middle-distance breeding ambitions and continues a long-standing family racing association. The trophy design mirrors that of the Pearce Memorial Cup, one of the oldest races in Hong Kong, run in memory of Mr Pearce’s father, ‘Tam’. On Mr Pearce’s passing in 2017, his legacy established John Pearce Racing to continue his breeding and racing activities. It also created the John Pearce Foundation, a UK registered charity that supports racing related charities and other good causes. For more information on both endeavours, please visit www.JohnPearce.org

2020 WINNER: MOGUL 3 9 1 Ryan Moore 9-2 (Aidan O’Brien) 6 ran
Race Summary After a string of placed efforts in good company, including a third-placed finish in the Irish Derby and second in the Grand Prix de Paris, WORDSWORTH might get the victory his consistency deserves here. Aidan O’Brien’s colt was behind stablemate Sir Lucan when they met in May, but the son of Galileo has improved markedly since. Third Realm was a good fifth in the Derby despite being too keen early and could go well, while Yibir won a Group 3 at Newmarket last time but that means he’s giving weight to a proven Group 1 performer in the selection.
Danger: Sir Lucan
Win: Wordsworth

2020 WINNER: FANCY BLUE (IRE) 3 8 12 Ryan Moore 11-4 (Donnacha Aidan O’Brien) 7 ran
Race Summary Aidan O’Brien has won two of the last five runnings of this Group 1 contest and has a couple entered here, with Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Empress Josephine proven on heavy ground. Stable companion JOAN OF ARC was only a short-head behind her that day and has since taken the Prix de Diane over this sort of trip, and she looks the stable number one. Audarya has the best form in the field, including a second to Love in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, but giving 9lb to the selection could prove too much.

RACE FIVE
A very competitive affair, but a chance is given to ARDBRACCAN for a jockey and trainer combination that provided the winner of this race last year. The son of Lawman seems to be going the right way after his latest success at Newmarket and looks to be well treated on his nursery debut. Highland Premiere could be the biggest danger seeking the hat-trick for a trainer who has a good record in this race. Mayfair Stroll carries a 6lb penalty after her success at Lingfield, while Adjuvant and Robasta also hold strong claims.

2020 WINNER: SPIRIT OF BERMUDA (IRE) 2 9 0 Tom Marquand 8-1 (William Haggas) 9 ran STEWARDS NOTED: ISEMEL:Following its run on 17/7/2021 it was reported that the horse was never travelling. QUICK SYLVA:Following its run on 15/7/2021 it was reported that the horse was slowly away.
Race Summary A case can be made for plenty of these, including Helene, who has twice run well over 6f at Newbury. Andrew Balding looks to have a couple of solid chances with Wilderness Girl and Typewriter, while Shoutout and Silverdale are other interesting players. Mark Johnston won this race in 2018 and any market support for newcomer Vintage Fashion could well be worth noting, but it’s her stablemate BRAZILIAN BEACH that shades the verdict. The Fast Company filly shaped with lots of promise on her debut over 6f at Chelmsford and will almost certainly improve for this step up in trip.

Twilight Calls has been running in the manner of a sprinter going places this term but an 8lb rise for his latest Newmarket triumph might be a shade too harsh. Whenthedealinsdone ran well enough over 6f last time and may be better judged on his victory at Windsor over this trip, where he had Isle Of Lismore (third) and Rebel At Dawn (fourth) behind, but preference is for A PINT OF BEAR. Scott Dixon’s grey has flourished since switching to turf, winning at Catterick and going close at York. He might not have finished improving yet.
