elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the fourth day of the 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

This afternoon features the fastest race of the week with the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, a race named after King George V. This five-furlong contest will see the horses charge past the grandstands in a showcase of raw speed with the Charlie Hills trained Battaash looking for a record-breaking fifth win in the contest.

In the last two year’s Battaash has consistently broken his own record as the fastest horse in the World, achieving a top speed of 45.2mph and 45.5mph in 2019 and 2020 respectively. This year all eyes will be on the speedometer once more. The King George Qatar Stakes is one of two hotly contested Group 3 races today, which includes, the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes. We are always true to our rich heritage here on the South Downs, while constantly moving forward to develop the Racecourse. The Earl’s Lawn, located at the heart of the Gordon Enclosure is a recent intervention that brings to life a fabulous day at the races. Racegoers can enjoy live music, seafood and Veuve Clicquot or simply soak up the sun and celebrate with friends after being apart for many months. We are most grateful to Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Unibet, Bonhams, and L’Ormarins for their generous support of this afternoon’s racing. I hope that you have a very enjoyable time here at Goodwood today.

Today ’s Feature t h e K i n g g e o r g e Q ata r S ta K e S

A hotly-contested five-furlong event for three-year-olds and upwards, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is Goodwood’s premier race for sprinters. A comparatively modern innovation in the context of Goodwood’s 216-year history, it was inaugurated in 1911 to mark the succession to the British throne of King George V the previous year. Sir Gordon Richards set a likely never-to-be-beaten record of riding the winner in six consecutive seasons beginning in 1947. Still, the legendary Lester Piggott is the race’s most successful jockey with an amazing nine wins, the last of which was Anita’s Prince in 1984. The brilliant mare Lochsong beat Paris House in a thrilling renewal in 1993 under Frankie Dettori. She returned twelve months later to register a second success and become one of only half a dozen horses to win the race twice. Fillies and mares have maintained a good record in the King George Qatar Stakes in recent years with Land Of Dreams (1998), Cassandra Go (2000), Agnetha (2002), La Cucaracha (2006), and Enticing (2008) among the flag bearers. The mare Ortensia became the first Australian-trained horse to win a race at Goodwood when scoring five years ago and underlined her talent with success in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York subsequently. Battaash was an incredibly impressive winner in 2017, scoring by 2 1/4 lengths before going on to take the Group 1 Prix de L’Abbaye at Chantilly. A commanding victory by Battaash in 2018, 2019, and 2020 means the late Hamdan Al Maktoum owned five-year-old looks to become the first five-time winner of the Qatar King George Stakes.

Unibet 3 Boosts A Day Goodwood Handicap

Withhold ran a promising race last time out when travelling nicely for a long time at Newbury and this extra distance might just help him here. Oisin Murphy takes the ride on this classy individual and although he has top weight and has to give some promising rivals weight, he can run a nicel race at rewarding odds for owner Tony Bloom.

r a c e 2, 2.25 p m

was pulled out of a race here on Tuesday, and with a good low draw in stall 5 can go close for Mark Johnston. But the each way selection at a value price is Hortzadar at around 20/1 at time of writing. Unibet are offering extra places for this race and given he’s got a low draw, and the ground might come right for him, this previous course winner – for last year’s winning trainer David O’Meara – is worth an each way interest.

King George Qatar Stakes

Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes This Group 3 contest should fall to the unbeaten Baaed who has been so impressive in his three runs so far, Last time out he took another step up in class into listed company and dispatched the opposition with the minimum of fuss. He takes another rise in class, but the expectation is this William Haggas three-year-old could be destined for G1 races later in the season and he should take this easily enough, if that is to be the case.

Unibet Golden Mile Handicap

Traditionally, one of the most eagerly awaited mile handicaps of the entire season and Unibet are delighted to sponsor for a third consecutive season. Maydanny

One of best sprinters we have seen in modern times, Battaash, aims to win this race for the fifth consecutive year, but it won’t be easy and is the first time at Goodwood that he looks worth taking on at the prices. We would all love him to be successful and the roof will come off the grandstand if he was to win. But from a betting perspective opposing him may be the best strategy. The 3-year-old Dragon Symbol has time on his side and showed his class when taking the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. He subsequently stepped up to take on the older horses in the July Cup finishing a close-up 2nd. He is taken to break the hearts of those who follow Battaash by landing this important prize.

l’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes

A competitive looking Group 3 with any number of horses in with a chance, but the selection is Mogul, a striking son of Galileo and two-time G1 winning horse. This previous course and distance was most disappointing on his seasonal debut, but he is much better than that and on the balance of his form he must simply be the choice at what appear generous odds at time of writing.

TDN Australia Handicap

Her Majesty’s Wink Of An Eye is taken to close the card with a royal winner. This fast improving 3-y-old son of Dubawi has rattled up a quick hat trick of victories and last time out ran his best race ever when an easy 2l winner of a Sandown handicap. He must improve yet again, but there is every chance he will.

r a c e 6, 4.45 p m

Unibet Deposit £10 Get £40 Bonus Nursery Handicap Jim Crowley and Mark Johnston have many good chances today, and they pair up here with Jadhlaan. This Dark Angel 2-y-old took a nice novice event at York in June and last time out took on some of the best young sprinting talents around in the G2 July Stakes. This represents a step down in class and providing he doesn’t take quite as strong a hold as he did then, he must be there or thereabouts.

Please note all runners and races are subject to change. 35

Race Summary ELYSIAN FLAME ran a career best when going down narrowly in the Ascot Stakes and, back on a preferred softer surface, he is expected to take the beating with Daniel Tudhope booked for the first time. Last year’s main protagonists are all expected to be on the premises again, including the winner Just Hubert, who can bounce back, guaranteed stayer The Grand Visir (fourth), and Smart Champion (third), who may be the best handicapped horse in the field. The winning machine Platform Nineteen and the consistent Rajinsky are also worthy of respect.

Race Summary There has been a couple of standout performances by the Classic generation this season but BAAEED’s electric display in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket was right up with the best of them. He looks a colt right out of the top drawer and he can confirm that impression once more here. The talented Rhythm Master, who ran a stormer in the Jersey, can follow him home, as well as the consistent Tasman Bay.

Danger: Rhythm Master

Race Summary Magical Morning accounted for MAYDANNY when scoring at Sandown earlier this month but the latter can reverse that form today. Mark Johnston’s gelding is 6lb better off at these weights and he has a better draw in stall five. Path Of Thunder is another with strong form claims that is drawn low and it would be no surprise to see him go well. At bigger odds Acquitted, Bedouin’s Story and Escobar all have the ability to make the frame if at their best.

Danger: Magical Morning

Race Summary Superstar sprinter Battaash arrives here looking for his fifth consecutive win in this race and warrants huge respect. However, a chance is taken on the young pretender DRAGON SYMBOL, who has been knocking on the door at the highest level this season. The son of Cable Bay was last seen finishing second in the Group 1 July Cup Stakes at Newmarket and looks well treated with the three-year-old allowance. Glass Slippers is interesting on her seasonal bow for Kevin Ryan after her Breeders’ Cup success. Arecibo, Art Power and Suesa also merit consideration.

2020 WINNER: PABLO ESCOBARR (IRE) 4 9 1 Tom Marquand 9-2 (William Haggas) 6 ran STEWARDS NOTED: MOGUL:Following its run on 4/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was unsuited by the good to soft going.

Race Summary Alounak looks interesting with the Andrew Balding stable in good form. His last win was in handicap company, but he has run well in Group class in the past and won’t mind the ground. Euchen Glen should go close at the age of eight and was impressive last time when winning at Sandown, but it may be worth chancing the improving PASSION AND GLORY. Saeed bin Suroor’s gelding bolted up in a decent Ascot handicap last time and could take the step up in class in his stride.

Race Summary Sterling Knight looks well weighted off a mark of 73 after failing to see out the seventh furlong at Sandown, and he is of interest with Joe Fanning in the saddle. He has been gelded and could improve. Catch Cunningham caught the eye with a battling performance to get back up at Newcastle and that attitude can only help his cause. TROPEZ POWER won the race in the stewards’ room last time but was cruising at the furlong pole and could have the class to follow up now back at six furlongs.

2020 WINNER: CEPHEUS 3 9 7 William Buick 6-1 (Brian Meehan) 9 ran STEWARDS NOTED: MICKYDEE:Following its run on 9/7/2021 it was reported that the horse would prefer a softer surface.

Race Summary Wink Of An Eye has been in terrific form and arrives here seeking the hat-trick. However, a chance is taken on handicap debutant MARCHING ARMY, who created a strong impression when winning at Leicester. That form has subsequently been boosted and the Godolphin representative looks to have been given favourable opening mark. Barn Owl has also been sneaking under the radar and he appears to be the chief danger to the selection, now stepping back up in distance. State Of Bliss and Ziggy also merit consideration and could have more improvement to come.

Danger: Barn Owl
