elcome to Goodwood Racecourse for the fifth and final day of the 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
First run in 1840, The Unibet Stewards’ Cup is the highlight of this afternoon’s racing, with a capacity field of 28 runners charging over the hill from the six-furlong start. A must-see sporting spectacle, this race is also the biggest betting contest of the week. The Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry is the highlight of the supporting card, a race which has grown in stature since its move from the Friday of this meeting to the Saturday.
There are many fabulous vantage points from which to follow the racing action. The Gordon Enclosure boasts the new Sussex Beer Garden alongside The Earl’s Lawn where delicious street food by KERB and live music will see you celebrating long into the evening. In the Richmond Enclosure, paddock side bars including the Oak Tree Lawn bar presented by Whispering Angel and the Gusbourne Pavilion are well worth a visit for a refreshing drink in the summer sun. We are extremely grateful to the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Unibet. Thames Materials and the EBF for their generous support of this afternoon’s racing. With seven races to look forward to, I hope that you have a very enjoyable time at Goodwood today and we look forward to welcoming you back for August Bank Holiday Weekend when racing returns to the South Downs.

Today ’s Feature t h e u n i b e t s t e wa r d s ’ c u p
Often referred to as a ‘Cavalry Charge’ and inaugurated in 1840, the Unibet Stewards’ Cup is one of the oldest and most competitive races at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The origin of the race dates right back to 1834 where the most senior Steward at the racecourse awarded a cup to the winner of any race of his choosing on that day. The chosen race varied each year meaning the Stewards’ Cup was run over distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile and a half. In its modern form, the race is run over six furlongs on the Saturday of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the feature race on the card, and is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards. The continued support of Unibet this year will extend the races rich heritage, with prize money of £250,000 on offer. The last horse to win back-to-back runnings of the Stewards’ Cup was Sky Diver in 1967 and 1968. Since then, it has become a nemesis of horses returning looking to win the race for a second consecutive year. Some of the most recognisable winners of this race in the past include the likes of Lochsong, Danetime, Hoof It & Magical Memory who all competed in fields of nearly 30 horses making the race a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed. Ex Jockey and now trainer, Richard Hughes boasts an impressive record in the modern era, winning the race four times between 1995 and 2014. Frankie Dettori won the race for the first time in 2015, ticking off one of the only major UK races to have evaded him so far. The second win wasn’t far behind for the charismatic jockey as he took victory in 2017 aboard Lancelot Du Lac for trainer Dean Ivory. In 2018, Brighton born Jason Watson, teamed up with top weight Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer to score en route to the 2018 champion apprentice title. Khaadem and Summerghand added their names to the roll of honour in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

The Course course characteristics Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

Ed Nicholson, Head of Racing at Unibet, our Official Betting Partner of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, shares his thoughts on today’s racing. r a c e 1, 1.50 p m
Thames Materials Handicap
Spirit of Bermuda is onto a hat trick of victories following wins at Leicester and Newmarket and having taken her maiden at this meeting last year, we know she will handle the track. She is in the form of her life and will take a great deal of beating.
r a c e 2, 2.25 p m
Unibet Stewards’ Sprint Handicap
The Unibet Stewards’ Sprint is for horses who didn’t make the cut for the Unibet Stewards’ Cup and is a particularly competitive event. First Folio was plying his trade in France last season but crossed the English Channel for the start of 2021 and has since won two of his three races for James Ferguson. Despite missing the start last time at York, he won a shade cosily and he looks an improving sort. This is just his 9th career run and he looks like he is still improving.
r a c e 3, 3.00 p m
Summer Handicap
Alan King has had a marvellous week here at Goodwood and that week can get even better here with On To Victory. The experienced 7-year-old ran a nice race on his seasonal reappearance when second at Goodwood back in May, and this trip looks perfect for him.
r a c e 4, 3.35 p m
Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes
One of the best races of the week and many will be hoping to see Wonderful Tonight continue her excellent run of form. Local trainer David Menuisier has had a good week and his horses remain in fine form. Wonderful Tonight took
the G2 Harwicke Stakes in brilliant fashion last time out and looks destined for G1 company, so should take this en route.
r a c e 5, 4.10 p m
Unibet Stewards’ Cup
One of the most iconic races of the week, if not the year, and once again an extremely competitive event with any number of possible winners. The draw may prove an important factor, with most trainers wanting to go high in the public draw on Thursday. But Fresh, in stall 16, is the selection. He comes into the race at the top of his form having finished runner-up at Royal Ascot in the Wokingham and trainer James Fanshawe won this race back in 2007.
r a c e 6, 4.45 p m
British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Stakes
Richard Hannon is having a week to remember once more at the Qatar Goodwood Festival and his Cabrakan is taken to make a winning debut from what looks a nice draw a horse making his debut.
r a c e 7, 5.20 p m
Signature Apprentice Handicap
The meeting closes with a competitive apprentice handicap where it might be as much to analyse the merits of the jockeys as much as the horses. Saffie Osborne has had a wonderful season and You’re Hired will be a popular choice for local trainer Amanda Perrett. You’re Hired has good form at the track and comes here on the back of a win at Bath last time out and must go very close here.

SEVEN BROTHERS: Following its run on 8/7/2021 it was reported that the horse was slowly away.
Race Summary A very competitive handicap, but a chance is taken on DARK SHIFT, who had excuses last time at Ascot and should appreciate any ease in conditions now stepping up in distance. Quintillus posted an outstanding third-placed effort in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and is likely to be on the premises. Spirit Of Bermuda arrives here seeking a hat-trick after wins at Leicester and Newmarket, but might find this tougher against the boys. Farasi Lane and Master Zoffany also merit consideration.

2020 WINNER: TREACHEROUS 6 9 8 Harry Bentley 7-1 (Ed de Giles) 16 ran STEWARDS NOTED: ZIM BABY: Following its run on 10/7/2021 it was reported that the horse was hampered early and hung left. OPEN WIDE: Following its run on 12/7/2021 it was reported that the horse was impeded on the run-in. ABLE KANE: Following its run on 31/5/2021 it was reported that the horse ran too freely.
Race Summary Though small in number, the three-year-olds may hold sway in this highly-competitive sprint, with the Karl Burke-trained BICKERSTAFFE making the most appeal having won with real authority at Ascot last time. First Folio, who is still unexposed for this yard, won a very competitive handicap at York in June and rates high on the list of dangers, while the highly-progressive Power Over Me, who was disqualified after passing the post first at Epsom last time, also looks capable of a bold showing.
Danger: First Folio

Race Summary A wide-open contest with almost all having strong claims. On To Victory ran well in Listed company here last time, while Win O’Clock and My Frankel were separated by a neck when second and third respectively at Haydock recently. Future Investment went close over this trip at Ascot, while Nuits St Georges had Prince Alex behind over C&D and followed up at Salisbury, but slight preference is for URBAN ARTIST. Hughie Morrison’s mare was second in a Group 3 over this trip at York two starts ago and could be better back in handicap company.

2020 WINNER: ENBIHAAR (IRE) 5 9 6 Jim Crowley 1-2 (John Gosden) 3 ran STEWARDS NOTED: ALBAFLORA: Following its run on 19/6/2021 it was reported that the horse had spread its right-fore plate.
Race Summary Dual Group 1 winner and confirmed mud-lover WONDERFUL TONIGHT looked better than ever when winning the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on her reappearance and is hard to look beyond, despite her penalty. Albaflora, who was six lengths in arrears that day, should finish closer on 3lb better terms, but Irish Oaks runner-up Divinely may prove most troublesome in receipt of weight-for-age allowances. The improving Believe In Love landed a Group 3 with something to spare last time and should also go well.
Danger: Albaflora
Win: Wonderful Tonight

Race Summary HURRICANE IVOR has had an eventful season, but this contest above all others appeals as the perfect next step in his progression as a sprinter. He is taken to relish the step up in trip and has already proven himself in a big field at Ascot three weeks ago. Fresh has a similar profile and a 3lb rise for a narrow defeat in the Wokingham may well underestimate the son of Bated Breath. Punchbowl Flyer is also entitled to major respect, especially if getting loose on the front end, as well as the in-form Ejtilaab, who makes his first start for new connections. Bielsa also makes the shortlist, along with Zarzyni, who won with plenty in hand on his most recent outing.

Race Summary Flying Secret (second) and Khanjar (fourth) are expected to step forward from their Ascot debuts and should be bang there at the business end of this maiden. Experience can win the day, though, especially at this track, and TARTAN CHIEF has performed well in defeat at both Haydock and Salisbury. William Buick takes over in the plate, which is a big positive, and his Salisbury form was franked at Newbury recently.

Race Summary You’re Hired won well at Bath last time and last year’s Cambridgeshire fourth has to be respected, while Ebury ran well for second at York last time and though unproven over further than a mile, he could be a factor in this. Rebel Territory has shaped as though a win could be in the pipeline soon when placing here and at Ascot, but TURNTABLE could put his rivals in a spin here. A good second off today’s mark over a mile at Newmarket last time, Chris Wall’s gelding shaped as though the extra furlong would suit.
