WELCOME
TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE
VIRGIN BET GRIMTHORPE CHASE DAY AT DONCASTER Thank you for joining us from the comfort of your own home for the Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Chase. Since our last race meeting, we have seen the route map from government be announced, allowing us to begin planning to welcome people back on course from May 17th 2021. We are planning for your return and can t wait to hear the buzz of having guests back on site. Today we bring you a 7-race card, with todays’ feature race taking centre stage at 3.30. The Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Steeple Chase is open to horses aged five years or older. With 19 fences to face, this race provides a good test for Grand National. Cloudy Bay won the Grimthorpe in 2008, going on to win the National in 2012. This year’s race includes Beware the Bear and Canelo who are both entered for the Grand National and this race will show how prepared they are in advance of the Grand National in April. We would like to thank our sponsors Virgin Bet for sponsoring today’s meeting. We look forward to welcoming you back on course later in the year. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted
PREVIEW 1
Lively Citizen is a horse who is improving with every run, he has gone up 2lbs in the weights but has every chance here today if the form of his last two runs at Cheltenham can be followed up. Hydroplane won a Jumpers’ bumper at Lingfield recently, he looked good in his handicap hurdle win at Market Rasen but this race is more competitive.
2
Wynn House is a consistent mare and likely to run a big race now stepping back to Listed mares’ company. She ran well when taking on some good sorts in a Cheltenham Grade 2 Novices’ Hurdle in December The lightly raced Alpha Carinae jumped right-handed in her last race at Warwick in November. The good ground should suit her and if she gets her jumping back up in order.
3
Rikoboy was an impressive 10 length winner at Market Rasen in December and was a close 2nd at Musselburgh on soft ground on his last start. He has gone up in the weights but 129 seems a feasible mark. Zoffee has had a decent chasing career so far. He tends to run prominently. He finished a length behind Getaway Trump last time they met at Warwick, but may well reverse form here.
4
Canelo who holds an entry in the Aintree Grand National looks a solid prospect in the Grimthorpe Chase. The stamina test should not be an issue here. Chidswell won this race in 2019 by an impressive 9 lengths on good ground. He may have run a little disappointingly on a few occasions since but showed that he still has plenty of ability on his most recent run.
5
Small Present won for the first time by a head last time out at Catterick. The horse is up 6lbs in the weights but this trip seems to suit and looks a consistent horse. Skandiburg switches back to hurdles for new trainer Jamie Snowden. A repeat of his run at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day would see him go close.
6
Buzz De Turcoing may have had excuses last time out at Ascot. His win at Haydock in December looked smart beating Tom And Frayed by 3.5 lengths. Kildimo went very close to winning last time out at Fakenham and the form of that race has not worked out too bad either. This could be a good opportunity for him to grab his first victory.
7
Party Business ran a good third at Newcastle and should improve for that run but the winner of that bumper Punxsutaney Phil looked smart and could very well make it 2 from 2 for trainer Brian Ellison. Datsalrightgino has finished in the places three times now from three starts but this looks like a good opportunity for trainer Jamie Snowden.

A case can be made for a few but the most persuasive one is for SKANDIBURG who reverts to hurdles on his debut for Jamie Snowden having not taken to fences and is fancied to capitalise on a good mark. Unexposed Small Present rates a big threat on the back of his breakthrough Catterick win, while Getareason shouldn’t be underestimated after two encouraging bumper runs for his new yard.

KILDIMO pulled clear with another progressive sort at Fakenham last time and, with this longer trip set to suit, he gets the nod to go one better. Glen Vine showed clear promise for David Pipe a couple of seasons ago so is certainly in the mix with a recent run under his belt, while Buzz de Turcoing looks the other key player.
