This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-old and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a filly rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

CAPTAIN J C STEWART
Captain John C Stewart was a farmer and landowner in Lanarkshire. He was born at Murdostown in 1888 and died there in 1978. He had a considerable record in public life in Scotland. He was Lord Lieutenant of the County for many years, County Councillor, Grand Master Mason for Scotland, and one-time Director of the Red Cross. He had a lifelong interest in Lanark Racecourse, being Chairman at one time, and as a result of this interest, his nephew Robert Stewart initiated a Trust in his memory.
