HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER 1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager. 2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet. 3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings. 4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place. 5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.

EACH WAY BETTING The RCA and the bookmaking association have agreed the following terms for all bookmakers offering each way betting on course. NON-HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8+ runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 HANDICAPS 5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8 - 11 runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3 16+ runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3,4 All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only.

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

PLAY SMARTER

Race Summary: Alastair Ralph has been among the winners of late and WHITE TURF could be another for the yard. His recent near miss at Market Rasen was all the more agonising given that the outcome probably would’ve been different had he not made a hash of the second-last. Secret Potion made a winning handicap debut in this sphere at Warwick last week and is feared greatly, while Ranco is also of interest.

Race Summary: A case can be made for a few but the most persuasive one is for VALENTINE’S TURF who should really benefit from this stiffer test of stamina after his staying-on Taunton third and can open his account. She’s A Novelty is feared most off a slipping mark, although both Gyllen and Out By Six can have a say too in an open handicap.

Race Summary: It may be worth siding with BALLINSKER, who has yet to make an impact since switched to handicaps but it should be pointed out that the three he has contested are among the most competitive on the jump racing calendar, namely the Greatwood, Betfair Hurdle and, most recently, the Swinton. Takeit Easy is an obvious threat on the back of his C&D success and Pagero is also accorded respect.

A TRIBUTE TO LORNA BROOKE The Directors of the Ludlow Raceclub are pleased to welcome family, friends and colleagues to a celebration of the life of Lorna Brooke who tragically passed away on 26 April as a result of a spinal injury sustained at Taunton Racecourse on 8th April. Lorna was blessed with a vivacious, bubbly personality and her smile always lit up the racecourse wherever she went. Most of us are familiar with Lorna’s presence over many years, not only on the racecourse but also point-to-pointing which was her passion. Her thirst for racing was unquenchable; she embodied everything there is to love about jump racing. Over the last 20 years she enjoyed 17 winners under rules as well as some 40 point-to-point winners, carrying her mother’s orange and brown colours to victory many times. Her loss is very keenly felt in the weighing room and beyond. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sir Alistair and Lady Susan Brooke and Lorna’s many friends and colleagues. She will be much missed. Lorna was the perfect diplomat and could always be relied upon, with her sunny nature and modest disposition. In 2015 she represented GB in Arabian racing, riding in both Bahrain and in Poland as part of the Ladies World Series and enjoyed its finale in Abu Dhabi. In 2018 she also represented GB alongside Jodie Hughes in Mauritius and again in 2019 when riding as part of the GB’s lady riders team in Germany. Her unfailing smile allowed Lorna to make friends wherever she went. In 2011, following the career ending fall sustained by champion amateur Isabel Tompsett, Lorna joined forces with fellow leading amateur jockey Jane Williams to complete a 907 mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund. Incredibly the pair reached their destination in only 8 ½ days and in the process raised an amazing £25,000. The high point of Lorna’s career was when she was invited to ride in the “Today” FM Ladies Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse competing against established and renowned female jockeys Rachael Blackmore, Katie Walsh, Nina Carberry and Lizzie Kelly, riding Moonlone Lane a 25/1 outsider which had failed to win under Sir Anthony McCoy and Brian Hughes. Lorna won by 2 ½ lengths and went on to team up with the same horse to win a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh. The AJA have kindly sponsored the 4.20pm Amateur Riders’ Hurdle in Lorna’s memory after which the winning rider and the first four finishers will be presented with a memento by Sarah Oliver, Chief Executive of the AJA. Lorna’s family, many friends and colleagues are devastated by her passing and those present this afternoon are invited to join her parents Sir Alistair and Lady Susan Brooke in the Marquee in the centre of the course.
