Good Afternoon and welcome to the Curragh for our first May meeting. We have a real feast of quality racing in store for you today with some very competitive racing. We are very fortunate to have great sponsors in the Curragh and today we welcome, Coolmore Stud, GAIN Equine Nutrition, Sentinel Ireland, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF and AES Ireland, our waste management partner who is part of the Bord Na Mona Group. I would like to thank them for their generous support of the Curragh and ask you to support them whenever you can. The feature race this afternoon is the Coolmore Stud Sottsass Mooresbridge Stakes. This Group 2 contest is always a great race and we are looking forward to another quality contest this afternoon. Coolmore also very kindly sponsor the Coolmore Stud Circus Maximus Athasi Stakes, and the Dick McCormick Tetrarch Stakes. The GAIN First Flyer Stakes is the first race in a really exciting new series, the Champions Collection culminating with the GAIN Railway Stakes on Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day. The Irish Stallion Farms EBF sponsor two races this afternoon and also support three other races. They are Irish racing’s biggest sponsor, and we are very grateful to them. It is good to see that the county is beginning to open up again and we hope that we will be able to welcome back our patrons in limited numbers during the summer. The facility is looking great, and we can’t wait to share it with you. In the meantime, we look forward to engaging with you through the various channels. All our racing is covered on Racing TV and you can also follow it through our various social media channels. Our digital card is proving very popular, make sure to use it and I hope that you enjoy it. Racing at the Curragh is only possible with the support of the owners. It is a big disappointment that we can’t welcome you here today, but we would like to thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. The grooms play a very import role in racing as they care for the horses that our sport is all about. I would like to thank Moyglare Stud who sponsor the catering for stable staff at every meeting at the Curragh. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Johnny Levins Johnny Levins is a young ambitious trainer based out of The Curragh Racing Stables here on the edge of The Curragh. An ex-jumps jockey, Johnny achieved multiple successes in the saddle. He rode for Charlie Swan and Brendan Powell to name just two and learned a great amount in all the yards he worked in which he can now bring to his own training operation. He also was assistant trainer to Shane Broderick for a number of years and in 2013 took out his own trainers’ licence and got off the mark with a winner very quickly. Johnny has done very well each season training winners on the flat with horses such as Your Pal Tal who won seven times for Johnny and placed multiple times. In recent times has started to also have a handful of jumps horses who have performed well over obstacles, proving his capability to train flat and national hunt horses here at his Curragh yard. 10

DICK MCCORMICK A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY MAN OF THE TURF Richard McCormick looks back at the illustrious career of his father Dick McCormick and his association with the legendary The Tetrarch. Richard qualified as a vet and set up a successful practice based in County Meath he was a successful trainer based on the Curragh from 1970 to 1982. Notable horses he trained included Hardboy, Folk Hero, Aristocracy, champion sprinter Willy Willy and Balidaress, who subsequently was the dam of Group 1 winner Park Appeal. In all his races, The Tetrarch was ridden by the legendary Steve Donoghue (winner of six English Derbies and 10 times Champion Jockey from 1910-1920), but in his morning work he was only ever ridden by an 18-year-old Irishman, Dick McCormick. In 1944, Dick McCormick trained initially as private trainer to A.P Reynolds in Kildalkey, Co. Meath. The partnership won 40 races in three years including the Phoenix Stakes, Beresford Stakes and the Irish Oaks. On dissolution of this arrangement, Dick moved to the Curragh where he became a public trainer at the famous Co Kildare training facility. During his Irish-based training years, 1944 until his death in 1963, Dick McCormick was iconic for training fillies, particularly two-year-olds. After all, he did win two Phoenix Stakes (otherwise known as the‘1500’), Leopardstown Produce Stakes, Beresford Stakes, three Maher nurseries, Patriotic, Irish Oaks, Madrid Free Handicap, etc., all with fillies. Dick also produced a number of high class apprentices including P.J. Corrigan, P.J. Crosby, J.T. Farrelly and the doyen of them all P.F. Conlon who according to Irish Horse Annual statistics of 1949 (at which time he in the middle of his five year apprenticeship:1946-1951 to Dick) rode 35 winners (including seven doubles) of such races as the Royal Whip, Maher Nursery, Anglesey Stakes, National Produce Stakes and the Ulster Cambridgeshire.

CURRAGH COMMENT The obvious starting point is CADAMOSTO, who quickly put the race to bed and pulled clear in the style of a smart sort on debut at Dundalk. Aidan O’Brien’s colt could have plenty more to come now switched to turf and is fancied to make it two from two. That said, giving 5lb to Cheerupsleepyjean will be no easy task, as Fozzy Stack’s filly was clearly very green early on over C&D a fortnight ago but still ran out an easy winner (Missing Matron third) and should know more about the game second time out. Elliptic is another filly getting weight from the boys and looked useful when making a winning start at Tipperary.

THE COOLMORE STUD SOTTSASS MOORESBRIDGE STAKES The Mooresbridge takes its name from, unsurprisingly, a bridge close to the racecourse, the Moore’s Bridge. Held as a Listed race for most of it’s time, the race was upgraded to Group 3 level in 2003 before being granted a further step up to Group 2 level in 2017. Seen as the perfect starting point for mile and a quarter and mile and a half horses, the race has an illustrious role of honour which looks set to be enhanced this year. Two riders have both won this race five times - Mick Kinane and the much missed Pat Smullen. Smullen was onboard Fascinating Rock for his victory in 2015, while the most successful trainer in this race is, again unsurprisingly, one Aidan O’Brien. The Ballydoyle machine has reigned supreme for a number of years now, winning consecutive renewals from 2010 - 2014 before Dermot Weld ended the dominance with Fascinating Rock in 2015. Normal service resumed though from 2016-2019 with a golden generation of Ballydoyle horses, with Found, Minding, Cliffs of Moher and Magical all using this race as a starting point before going on to Group 1 events on their next start. One name which stands out is the extraordinary Minding. An astonishing filly, she dazzled at the Curragh when winning the Moyglare as a two-year-old and the Pretty Polly as a three-year-old.

26

Last year’s renewal was held in June due to the COVID pandemic, with the Jessica Harrington-trained Leo De Fury coming out on top over the Aidan O’Brien-trained Fleeting. Given a confident hold up ride by Shane Foley, the then colt (now gelding) made smooth headway to challenge and then take the lead a furlong or so from home. Foley was keen to keep his mount up to his work and rode Leo De Fury clear in the final stages, staying on strongly at the line to win nicely by three lengths. Fleeting was also held up but, although finding some traffic problems, had every chance to put it up to the winner but couldn’t bridge that gap. Numerian rounded off the placings for Joseph O’Brien back in third under Declan McDonogh. Refresh your memory of the race by viewing the replay below, watch for the horse in the green and white silks held up at the back!

CURRAGH COMMENT Twilight Payment is the class act in the race and takes to the track for the first time since landing the Melbourne Cup in November. Over this shorter trip, on his seasonal return, however, he might be worth taking on with BROOME, who confirmed his effectiveness under these conditions last month when landing a Group 3 over this track and trip, with Up Helly Aa (third) and Helvic Dream (fourth) both in arrears. Saltonstall ran well over 1m at Leopardstown last time but others have stronger distance form in the book.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RACE THREE

THE COOLMORE STUD CIRCUS MAXIMUS ATHASI STAKES This race returns to the Curragh following a year where it was staged at Naas, as part of the racing calendar shift owing to the COVID pandemic. The race is named after one of the great broodmares from the early part of the last century whose progeny included Trigo - winner of the English Derby and St Leger in 1929. Looking back through the years and Dermot Weld’s record has kept strong despite the conditions changes to this race. After holding Group 3 status from 1973-1986, it was then run as a Listed race before regaining Group 3 status in 2003, during which time Weld trained six of his seven winners. For a period the Athasi was restricted to three-year-olds but it was opened to four-year-olds in 1993 and since 2001 older mares have also been eligible to run in the race. In the last 50 years just three fillies have been able to complete the Athasi-Irish 1,000 Guineas double, the most recent being Ridgewood Pearl in 1995. Miralla in 1975 and Wenduyne in 1969 were the other fillies to win both races in the last 50 years. The race has been won by a different trainer every year since 2008. One of the most impressive winners in recent years was the Mick Halfordtrained Rehana who, in the colours of the Aga Khan, wo comfortably under Pat Smullen in 2017. The win was Halford’s first success in the race since saddling back to back winners in 2006 and 2007 with Jazz Princess and Eastern Appeal respectively.

30

The race last year was held at Naas in November of 2020, a marked shift in both course and time from it’s usual slot at the Curragh in early May. The lightly-raced With Thanks came out on top, providing English trainers with the first win in the race for some time, thanks to Newmarket handler William Haggas. Owned by Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum, the lightly-raced daughter of Camacho came over to Naas as an unexposed type, having only had four runs in her career at that point. A winner on debut at Newmarket under then three pound claime Cieren Fallon, With Thanks had then been narrowly touched off in a novice event at Thirsk before bouncing back under a penalty at Catterick. Upped to Listed company at Goodwood she found Royal Ascot winner Onassis one too good and could only manage second, but found a different gear under Chris Hayes up to Group 3 company and she ran out an authoritative winner. Despite being wide and close up, Hayes looked confident throughout and committed a furlong from home, with his mount striding away to win by five lengths over Paddy Twomey’s Silk Forest back in second and Ger Lyons’ Soul Search back in third. Take a look back on the 2019 renewal, when the race was last at the Curragh.

CURRAGH COMMENT Queen’s Speech couldn’t have been more impressive when landing her maiden success over course and distance in November and she warrants plenty of consideration on her second career start. That said, she is thrown in at the deep end and will need to be very smart to beat CHAMPERS ELYSEES. One of the most improved horses in training last season, Johnny Murtagh’s filly went from landing a handicap here in June off 86 to winning at the highest level in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and there is every chance she could take another step forward. Valeria Messalina and No Speak Alexander appeal most of the remainder.

RACE FIVE

CURRAGH COMMENT A wide-open heat in which the sporting suggestion is Aidan O’Brien’s MONTEGO BAY. The 250,000-euro recruit finished her race off well over 1m on her reappearance at Leopardstown last month and an opening mark of 80 appears workable now she drops back slightly in trip. Pale Iris and Ginsburg have been quietly improving in maiden company and are respected with match fitness on their side, while grade droppers New Emerald Bay, Let’s, Luminesce and Messidor cannot be discounted either.

WIN: MONTEGO BAY

THE TETRARCH A TRIBUTE TO THE “SPOTTED WONDER” It is over 100 years (1913) since The Tetrarch blazed across the equine sky like a meteorite, remaining unbeaten in seven runs and subsequently from 130 lifetime foals founding a dynasty on both sides of the Atlantic. An undefeated grey, The Tetrarch founded a legacy which stretched far and wide in the thoroughbred world. Born and raised in County Kildare, The Tetrarch was by French sire Roi Herode out of the British-bred Vahren. In demand as a yearling, he was sold to Dermot McCalmont and sent into training with Atty Persse. Nicknamed the “Spotted Wonder”, The Tetrarch sparkled on the track, winning all of his seven starts in 1913, including the Woodcote at Epsom, the Coventry at TRAINER: Atty Persse Royal Ascot and the National Stakes at OWNER: Dermot McCalmont Sandown. SIRE: Roi Herode (FR) However, his rags to riches career came DAM: Vahren (GB) to an abrupt end in October 1913 when BREEDER: Edward Kennedy he sustained an injury at the end of his two-year-old campaign. Although hopeful that he would eventually recover, he was retired unbeaten and his legacy has since led to him being named Britain’s two-year-old of the 20th century. When sufficiently recovered, The Tetrarch was sent to Thomastown Stud in County Kilkenny before being relocated later to Ballylinch Stud, owned by his racing owner Dermot McCalmont. His now-known legacy was less so back in 1915 and he unpopular to potential breeders Infertility problems meant he only sired 130 foals in his stud career, but they were deep in quality and in 1919 he was the leading sire in the UK and Ireland. One particular progeny of his was Tetratema, a homebred son of The Tetrarch, who won all of his sprint races and took the English 2000 Guineas as a three-year-old. Returned to sprinting he excelled as a was a star horse for connections. He also produced Mumtaz Mahal, a mare who can list Bold Ruler, Secretariat, Abernant and Shergar among her descendants.

THE DICK MCCORMICK TETRARCH STAKES The event is named after The Tetrarch, a legendary Irish racehorse and sire foaled in 1911. For a period the Tetrarch Stakes held Group 3 status. It was downgraded to Listed level in 2011. The Tetrarch Stakes can serve as a trial for the Irish 2,000 Guineas. The last horse to win both races was Awtaad in 2016. Mick Kinane guided five horses to victory in this, making him the winning-most rider in the history of the race, while Vincent O’Brien saddled 13 winners, starting in 1968 with Harry and ending with College Chapel in 1993. Always a competitive race, the likes of Desert King, subsequent winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish Derby, and Creachadoir, subsequent winner of the Joel Stakes at Newmarket at the Lockinge at Newbury as a four-year-old, have won this race. However, the most high-profile winner of this in recent years is Awtaad. A winning two-year-old, Awtaad made his seasonal debut as a three-year-old in the Madrid Handicap at the Curragh over seven furlongs. He won easily, progressing to win this race and then the Irish 2,000 Guineas, all at the Curragh. A talented individual, Chris Hayes was in the saddle for all his races and guided the son of Cape Cross throughout a fine season.

42

Last year, the Tetrarch was one of the many races rescheduled to other racecourses throughout the country. This particular race was moved to Cork in early September, and Aztec Parade saw off Free Solo and Agitare in a competitive contest. The Johnny Murtagh-trained son of Anjaal was always in the leading pack under champion jockey Colin Keane and travelled well to deliver his challenge a furlong from home. Using his extra stamina over the trip he ran on smoothly under Keane and drew away to win by a length and a quarter from the Jessica Harrington-trained Free Solo back in second and the Jim Bolger-trained Agitare back in third. Following that win, Aztec Parade was sold to Hong Kong and now races under the name of Yo Beauty. Trained by former champion rider in Hong Kong Tony Cruz, Aztec Parade (now Yo Beauty) has struggled to trouble the judge in recent runs at Sha Tin and Happy Valley, but imports take time to adjust to the very different racing style in Asia. View below the 2019 renewal of the Tetrarch Stakes, when it was last ran at the Curragh and was won by Shelir on only his second start for Dermot Weld, ridden by Chris Hayes in the colours of the Aga Khan.

CURRAGH COMMENT The key piece for form looks to be a similar Listed event at Leopardstown last month, where ACE AUSSIE had four of these in arrears as he filled the runner-up spot behind Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare. That performance wants marking up as he fluffed the start and had to do it the hard way, so he is taken to frank the form on his way to going one better. Notre Belle Bete outran odds of 150/1 when less than a length behind the selection in fourth on his belated debut that day and, with scope for improvement, must be feared. Likewise Federal, who was a real eye-catcher when making a winning debut last July.

CURRAGH COMMENT Ottawa Fire and Wee Pablo impressed when opening their respective accounts last time and despite both feeling the wrath of the handicapper, are likely to make their presence felt once again here. Oneiroi went close over a mile at Leopardstown recently and is only 2lb higher dropping back to 7f, while El Padre made an eye-catching switch to the handicap ranks when third at Cork and has shaped like a first victory shouldn’t be too far away. However, there is plenty pointing in the direction of PRETTY REBEL, who was a courseand-distance winner in October and rattled the crossbar when returned to this trip at Gowran last month.

CURRAGH COMMENT ZEN SILENCE opened her account in a 5f maiden at Dundalk in February when keeping on strongly in the closing stages, suggesting a return to this longer trip should not inconvenience. Kieran Cotter’s three-year-old has the assistance of Colin Keane in the saddle once again and is fitted with first-time cheekpieces. Dandy Man filly Sure Cert is worth a market check now sprinting for the first time, while Trueba and Zephron are unlikely to be far away either if building on solid efforts last time.
